What in God's name?

What happened? Helen?

I haven't accidentally teleported in over a century.

Nikola. I might have guessed.

How is mortality treating you, old friend?

You have to rub it in.

You can if I can. Speaking of...

Exsanguinated any ladies of the night recently, old friend?

No. In fact, that problem has been resolved entirely. Even though I am hesitant to believe that.

Speaking of exsanguination, how are you coping with the end of those...how is it you always put it...halcyon days of bloodlust?

You know as well as I, old boy, that knowledge and desire are two different things.

Easy on the God thing. She might not like that.

You were kidnapped - by who, we don't know - and brought to Colligo.

Do you realise you you sound mental?

I see. Thank you for that rather lacking explanation, my dear girl.

I can read your sarcasm pretty well, thanks It's pretty much the extent of what we all know, as unbelievable as it sounds.

I had gathered as much from your explanation.

It's fine. I'm used to it. Though I do thank you for offering him a fair warning, to save me the trouble.

Welcome to Colligo. It can be a little much, at first, I know.

That may be something of an understatement.

Could you perhaps explain more about this place?

Yeah, I'm pretty good at downplaying this place. It's crazy, to say the least, but it's not always horrible. People you never expected to see again can turn up pretty much whenever, and people you'd never have met otherwise make it pretty interesting.

We don't know why we're here or who brought us, and there are some pretty powerful beings here who are just as stuck as the rest of us. We know we're not on Earth. There are two moons, though one can only be seen if you have really good vision or some sort of telescope. There doesn't seem to be anything beyond the city but I honestly think it's more that we just can't get there. Nothing works. It's been tested time and again. You always wind up back in the library.

Basically, five million words later, whatever you thought you knew and understood about reality, you can pretty much toss it right out the window because odds are it likely won't apply while you're here.

I've already had that happen. So they can bring people who were dead? It's really her?

I could tell we weren't on Earth. I would have been able to have a sense to teleport if it were How there's a city like this on another planet, I can hardly even imagine. I've tried leaving myself, but I only ended up back in the library. It was disconcerting to say the least.

Oddly, this is on par for how strange my life is usually, if ever so slightly more unbelievable.

Yeah. I've had several people that have died back home, show up here. People seem to come from different points in time, too.

Careful. If you try leaving too many times, you'll irritate the guards and they'll do their damndest to lock you up.

And you aren't alone in that. Most of us don't have what you'd really call 'normal' lives.

That's a relief to know. I had worried, but it really could be her.

It's rather impossible to lock me up, I assure you.

Is that so?

It's one of the better things about this place sometimes.

You sound like Par You sound awfully sure of yourself.

And yeah. It's one of the few things most of us have in common. Almost all of us come from some sort of life that isn't exactly the status quo of normality.

I would have to agree with you on that count.

It is very hard to keep a teleporter anywhere they don't wish to be.

I am starting to realise this.
