The presence of a shinigami had not surprised him; after all, he was here; Yagami was here; River, Lawliet, quite a few people who had come into contact with the gods of death. The appearance, though, that had been slightly confusing. The shinigami who called itself Grell Sutcliff did not look at all like Ryuuku had, which left two possibilities open: there were shinigami extant in multiple worlds, or shinigami were able to... alter themselves, somehow, physically. Though he supposed that it might be both.
Carefully, each stroke of his pen delicate, practiced, precise, he wrote the name into his schedule, despite the fact that Grell had not provided a decent time frame for the length of the meeting or even the time of arrival. Time was uncomfortably fluid here, a problem which made him uneasy at the very least. He tried to compensate by writing it all down and by sticking as religiously, as fervently to his schedule as he had in life. (Despite the arguments that others had put forwards against this being the afterlife, he had trouble considering himself alive, precisely, in a place like this and after he had already died...) It helped stem off the chaos, the incredible heaviness of time, but there was only so much he could do. Left without his work, he turned to studying, reading his way through the libraries one book at a time, filling the shelves of the not-quite-precise replica of his office with pages and pages of detailed notes. Then, of course, there was the gym, at the same time as always; that, at least, had not been changed. And as always, once a day, he wrote a pageful of names; though since he'd arrived, it had been the same name over and over, in tiny, neat handwriting, completely filling the pages of a plain black notebook to no effect: Nate River. He was writing now, waiting for the shinigami to arrive.
