WHO: Kennet & Aria
WHEN: June 3rd, late night
WHERE: Frozen Symphony
WARNINGS: TBD
WHAT: Chatting with an old acquaintance
PROMPT: Ice

Sound rose and fell around the Cirque some sounds of laughter and some sounds of sorrow. Even after the brief interaction earlier in the night with Rozalina, closer to the dinner, Kennet did not attend, he continued to wander the fair grounds, checking on the repairs to their attractions. His mood did not reflect the sober nature the humans felt that night, but rather he expressed the 'back to business' emotionless he had come to be known for.

Standing amongst the frozen structures of the silent symphony, Kennet inspected the integrity. For a creature so heavily tied to the feel of the desert and made up entirely of smokeless flame, the imposing, lean, yet elegant figure of the Djinn's human form seemed at home amongst the cold attractions. His composure reflected in the glassy motionless construction that once moved with the wild rapids centuries ago.

Aria had not attended the funeral pyre. It had not felt right to impose on such a deeply personal and tragic affair- she had no ties to those lost, having joined at such an inopportune time, and so had retreated for most of the evening, riding the wind over the ocean, returning to the grounds in a flurry of insectoid wings and violet light. She alighted just outside of her favorite place, her attraction, and reassumed her human figure, smoothing the wind-thrown snarls of her hair with her palms as she ducked inside the tent, her breath immediately casting puffs of moisture into the air.

She was surprised but not alarmed so to find the lean silhouette of the ringmaster imposed against the soft, comforting sapphire glow of the tent; she knew she did not need to announce herself for him to know she was there. She appeared at his side soundlessly, following his dark gaze as it scanned the hollow constructs of her instruments before tilting her head back to offer him a soft grin. "I thought you'd be at the dinner tonight," she said, speaking softly; sound carried in the cavernous space. "I'd be flattered to think you came here to visit, Kennet."

Kennet did not move his head, continuing his inspection when she spoke. "I do not attend dinners, whether they have reason or not." The time period in which Aria had arrived might not have allowed the insight that her old acquaintance both did not fit amongst the employees and did. Knowing each other long before the Cirque had acquired his services, she would notice a great change between the Djinn he had been and who he was now.

Turning to face her, he looked her over for the second time since she arrived. Giving her a job assignment and going over the rules had been a quick affair as he had not wanted her to ask more personal questions than what was necessary for her job. Kennet kept his distance quite obviously. "I was merely checking on the attraction, Aria. I thought you might be out longer."

She had noted the change in him during their brief time together in the interview. Last she had seen him he had been a different creature altogether, and their friendship had come naturally and easily. Air and Fire were a natural combination, of course... it made sense that they had gotten on together. But to look up at him now, it was evident that things had changed, and it was not just the face he wore. Still, she kept her smile in place for him, feigning a pout at his dismissal.

"Well, sorry to dissapoint." Her tone implied the exact opposite. "Though now that you're here, I don't suppose you have a moment to stay and catch up? I could play something for you! You know, to help your inspection, if you'd like to keep that pretense." She placed a hand on his arm. "It's been a good few centuries since I've see you, Kennet. Humor me."

Kennet lowered his eyes to her hand and then raised back to her face. Stress had never suited the Djinn well. He cut off a lot of emotions for his place as the Ringmaster, but previous to it the world would burn at his feet had he not had his partner Djinn by his side- they having been the softer, more passionate one. It had always been easy for Kennet to be disenchanted with Humans as he could see through lies that spilt from their mouths to the truths of their past and heart.

"More than few, but I must keep to my inspections." Kennet did not move away from her touch as much as he wished to; he would have, had it been most anyone within the Cirque. Old friends, like Aria and Thorsten, were strange peeks into his history that he did not wish for others to know about. Too many employees held too many questions about him as it was.

"Oh alright. Just one song, then," she sighed, her tone playfully suggesting that he had insisted upon it himself and she was obligated to acquiesce.

Without awaiting further objection, she slid the palm that still held his arm so that she could take him gently but insistently by the hand and lead him in to the adjoining room of the tent where the ice had been hollowed and molded into a nearly abstract tangle of flutes and pipes that draped from the ceiling and walls like shimmering lace. A sourceless light pulsed behind them, casting the room in shifting color reminsicent of the aurora borealis.

She lifted his hand and allowed herself a twirl underneath it, a soft breath of wind sighing around them to catch her dress and send the low hum of a pleasant chord through the room. As she settled she released him; if her tenacity irked him, she did not appear remotely concerned about it. The blues of her eyes scanned his face, and something softened in her smile. If there was one thing she knew, it was that people changed. But still, it saddened her to see him so removed.

"Any requests? Or should I choose something for you? You know, flames dance for the wind." This last was said teasingly, in the hopes of garnering a reaction. Anything would be preferable to the mechanical stoicism with which he operated now.

A sigh of annoyance but acceptance of the insisted moment slipped from the Ringmaster. He did not fight to stay in his place or leave. His steps remained as graceful as they always were, the fiery being's movements had never stuck or struggled for travel even in his human forms. Though he did not grip her hand back a natural heat emanated from inside his human coating threatening to sear if kept too long.

"You seem to be choosing for me as it is, Aria," he replied with the slightest tug of a smirk on his lips. What was with the insistent women in his life? "There are many ears amongst the Cirque who may perk at the sound of music from this attraction, and if you insist on the past then it may be cautious to leave the instruments be." The emotionless words came back but he had a hint of morose in his eyes.

"Though there is little to speak of."

"If only that were true."

She allowed the silence to settle around them for a moment and then, heedless of his advice, she allowed her fingers to slide through the air, conducting the first notes of a distantly familiar song. It was a sound from another world, another life, long forgotten by any save the few who had lived it, at once sweet and melancholy, as most memories were for those who had existed as long as they had.

The playing seemed effortless save for the soft undulations of her hands as they guided the sound. Still watching his features, she tilted her head in sympathy as she noted the rare emotion there in his eye. "You seem tired, Kennet."

Kennet closed his eyes and huffed out an annoyed sigh. He remembered how she could be and that this was part of her very nature, but he had not wished to reminisce, especially at such a time. The Djinn could be far icier than the blocks and instruments around them when he wanted to be. Opening his eyes once more, he looked down at the smaller form of the fae beside him.

"You might not wish to push the subject." His mind aware of all within the fairgrounds and their placement between each other, Kennet lifted his hands to the Fae and rolled up his sleeves. A dark tattoo peeked out from under the cotton fabric, easily seen when he was in his Ringmaster costume for the show. As he held them there a vibrant blue glow started to pulse beneath his skin in the ancient shapes of the tattoo covering it. Magic started to fill the space around them, a sandstorm scent of dry, earthy herbs mixed with an intense constraining chill.

She was not afraid of Kennet. She knew how powerful he was, of course. Though both borne of the very element they wielded, she could readily admit that his power far surpassed her own. The charge in the air caught her off guard, and she examined the glowing emblems on his arm with a furrowed brow.

"Is that...?"

She let the question linger between them, ticking her focus back up to meet his gaze. She had not stopped playing the song, though the tempo slowed to a mournful pace.

"What is that?" She indicated the mark.

"That is the truth." He watched her carefully, his gaze ever piercing into the very heart of those he looked at. "Before you start your questions, I wish to subvert them by showing you this." He put down his arms, both having bore the blue magic yet only one bearing the resembling tattoo. He let silence sit between them a moment.

"My contract here is not the same as the employees. I get no choices. I am bound to the Cirque- to Management and follow far stricter rules than those I tell to the newcomers." He licked his lips and looked down between them. "So when I say that you might not wish to push the subject of the time between our meetings, I am not being playful. I am no longer free."

The whispers of the Djinn and their powers and constraints never mentioned how one bound them into service. All that was known was that it took tremendous power and the few that had managed it tended to have taken power from other creatures to ensure the binding worked.

"I expect that conveys enough information to sate your appetite, old friend." There was a strange look of embarrassment over the matter that he tried to hide behind an emotionless face. It had been over two millennia since Kennet lost his other half, yet that was a short period considering how long they had been alive and an even shorter period had gone by from that moment to his own capture and contract by Management.

Her hands stilled and fell to her sides. The wind moaned its final notes through the ice, and the music died.

Aria, of all people, knew what it was to be bound. To have one's will and self-ownership taken away. Her own life had been derailed by her enslavement... she had lost the only love she'd ever known to it. She could only imagine what kind of power could contain a being as powerful as he, and shuddered at the thought. Kennet was not a careless man.

How unfair.

She was not sorry she knew. In fact, she felt she had done very little in prodding the issue, but she supposed Kennet simply knew her well enough to see the end game. She was sorry for him, truly and irrevocably, and this empathy was mixed in equal measure with a quiet rage that settled there behind her eyes.

When she spoke again her voice was quiet, barely a whisper in the dull silence left behind by her song. "You didn't have to tell me." The wind in the room shifted; he would feel it, a soft, reassuring carress against his face. She was not naive enough to offer to help free him, as she knew if there was a way out he would have found it by now. Silence lingered between them, charged with the revelation of secrets shared.

Drawing a deep breath, she forced another grin, though sadness seeped at its corners. "I've selfishly kept you to myself for some time. Not at all in keeping with your inspections, I'm sure." She swept into a shallow curtsey, and when she rose she once again took his hand, pressing it between her palms as she added, in a far more serious tone, "I am with you, old friend." She was satisfied that he would know exactly what she meant. When or if the time came, no matter the reason, she would be of assistance to him. No questions asked.

Kennet huffed out a small sigh through his nostrils. His larger hand curling around one of hers. "I can continue my inspections later." Blue eyes rose to meet hers. His face had changed so many times over the time they had known each other. The human shell meaning little to the Djinn within, though his face had not changed since his arrival at the Cirque's open.

"I told you because I know you would understand. I have given in a handful of times to my old self- took a witch to bed to regain my energy through her magic. But I have rare moments when I am allowed to let this form go." He paused. "I wish for you to be happy here. Do not go about your time here with anger. I just- I do not get time to breathe."

Kennet ran his fingers over Aria's cheek. She could show whatever emotion she wished on her surface but he saw secrets, he knew the dark pasts of the employees he interacted with, and though he could not read thoughts he understood their minds by understanding their darkness.

There was a pause. She looked at where his hand was wrapped around hers. "I favor my glamour but... even still it became its own prison after a time." She swept the pad of her thumb over his knuckles. She knew what he was. She knew what that flesh contained, and the tragedy of keeping it caged. "I do understand, Kennet. I'm angry for you. And surprisingly enough, you telling me not to be angry doesn't make me less angry."

She actually rolled her eyes at him and chuckled incredulously. "Do you not see how ridiculous it is for you to be worrying about me right now?"

She gave his hand another squeeze and tilted her face into the caress of his fingertips, lifting her eyes to look at him, one of her oldest friends. She was momentarily taken aback by he knowing she saw there in his gaze, but it did not frighten her. She had done horrible things in her very long life, but she had few secrets to keep. He had trusted her with so much in the years of their friendship, and now with this; she could live with him seeing whatever it was he saw in her now.

Another smile dimpled her cheeks. "Breathing is easy, Kennet. It's just air."

Kennet smirked. Elia would have had a field day seeing someone else roll their eyes at the Djinn rather than him at them. These little interactions with people of his own past had been the reason he needed to stay away from them. They gave away a lot more of him than he wished, knew a lot more. "It is my job to worry about the employees. As most do not worry about themselves."

By the time Kennet and Aria had run into each other, he had already changed from the vision Elia had witnessed of his past. Without his other half- Betrest, being the last name they used- and with the burning anger of a thousand suns, many of the ancestors of Solomon that tried to capture his other half's power had been destroyed in his wrath. The djinn had been at his worst, little more than the evil djinns he had scoffed at in their want to destroy. But Aria's softness reminded him partially of Betrest- the other Djinn had been more than some airy child like Aria, but the calm of their presence equalled one another.

"It is hard to control a flame if it has room to breathe." He countered. The magic bindings hidden away even highly sensitive witches and creatures could hardly notice them.

"What brings you to us?" He decided to change the subject away from him, the softness a crack through his hardened exterior.

She had been little more than a child, or as much of a child as an elemental being could be when first they met. She had marveled at him then, his strength and his callousness, his passion and his wildness, and had reveled in any and all reactions she could inspire from him. Her sisters had warned her about his kind, the raw power of their nature and the destructive chaos they left in their wake. But over many lifetimes Kennet had proven himself to be more than just that.

His retort truly pained her, and she made a disgruntled sound in her throat. The change of subject was necessary, she supposed, lest they linger too long on it and she become upset all over again, but even still she gave him a look that implied that it was not the last he would hear of it.

Releasing his hand, the contrast between the warmth of his skin and the frigid cold of the tent made her shudder a bit. "I heard this was a haven for creatures," she said simply, shrugging a bit and brushing some golden hair from her face. "I wanted a haven. I also thought it might be good for me to be around others like us." She laughed a bit. "I didn't know I would find so many familiar faces, though. You were a delightful surprise. Others... not so much." She seemed agitated for a moment, but moved on quickly to add, "I like it here, though. Moreso now." A meaningful look. "I just have to make sure you're breathing every once and a while."

Another gust of wind blew through the room, scattering ice particules along the floor and intentionally mussing his hair. She did not bother to try and conceal her amusement.

Her use of the word us made him laugh; a muffled sound behind his lips. While elemental in nature, the Djinn were not and could never be considered Fae like the Slyphs. In terms of nature, Djinn truly stood somewhere in-between a Demon, Spirit, and Fae. But Kennet knew she meant in the elemental sense.

"Yes, Thorsten is here. I cannot say that I am not surprised by you knowing him, but I had known him long ago in the days of the Viking's life." Kennet placed his hands behind his back; his form lean, straight with an unnatural grace as if carved from Ice once more. No matter what name he had went by or human shape he had taken, Kennet always had that imposing authoritative look to him- even while playful and vicious.

"I am sure with you here my breathing will be just fine." He quipped to appease her. The little Fae had grown up. Her truth, her dark moments danced before him telling him who she was now.

Kennet smiled, moving his hair back into place. "Ah, I remember now what it is to be friends with an air elemental."

She had meant 'us' more in the supernatural sense, but she still appreciated seeing him laugh, even if it was at her expense.

She visibly stilled at the mention of her husband... rather, ex-husband's name. "I know," she said quietly. It was news to her that he and Thorsten had known one another, but as he said, it was also not entirely surprising. The world really was such a small place, especially for gods and elements, it seemed. But still, the odds that all three of them would know each other and then end up in the same place so many years later were probabaly slim.

Yet here they were.

She regained herself rather quickly, and it was her turn to laugh as he went to fix his hair. "You say that like you forgot." She feigned insult at the notion. "I like it like that. You look more like yourself. Though incase I haven't mentioned it, this face does suits you quite well." He did seem at home here amongst her instruments, tall and unyielding.

Kennet raised his brows in acceptance of the compliment, pressing his lips together. "I try not to be a mess."

Looking around, his head nodded to the invisible thoughts within his head and he stepped away from Aria further. "I must go. I really do have other things to look after and as we are down our lead roustabout I must see to his team." Kennet paused. "If anything needs to be fixed, Conor is very skilled with his ice forms and is currently fixing his garden. I am sure he will help."

With that, Kennet took a step toward the door and disappeared. The Djinn easily travelled around the grounds without the need to walk or fly, yet most nights he preferred the slow saunter to teleportation.
