It was rare that Alexander liked anyone before he really knew them but Hagrid was one of the people he did. He wasn't a girl for one thing and he certainly wasn't a Pureblood for another, that and the man was good with animals and that trait tended to cross over to Alex's high strung manner of dealing with people. It was why he'd written to Hagrid to check he was okay in the first place but even so, he'd never expected the Professor to open his own home to some scraggly bad-tempered little bit of a Gryffindor that he barely knew just to spare him another night in the Hog's Head. While he'd been telling the truth about staying in his room most of the time, and while he'd certainly had worse places to sleep, he couldn't admit that he'd spent most of his nights awake under the sheets with his wand in hand, blinking sleepily at the door in case some of the raucous noise he heard from downstairs decided to come up and see what was behind door number one. He spent as little time as he could in there and only really used it to sleep. It was all he could afford though this close to school starting, even if it did afford him sleepless nights.
Learning that Hagrid had lost his parents too only further endeared the man to Alex and at this point the only other person he thought higher of was Jimmy (who would always be number one on Alex's list, regardless of their little spats). True to his word, Hagrid had met Alex at the Three Broomsticks and had then transported them and Alex's trunked-up possessions to Hogwarts, leading him from there to the man's hut. Alex said little, mostly still in shock that someone was looking out for him to this extent, but he broke out of his thoughts to look up and up at the door of the hut.
Hagrid ushered him in and he entered, looking around at the large furniture in awe but most of all, hit with the feeling that this was a place of safety, somewhere he could sleep properly and not have to worry about drunks or thugs or girls.
He looked over at Hagrid and started thanking him yet again. "Thank you for doing this for me Professor, and for picking me up and everything, you really didn't have to, I really appreciate it."
