Who: Narcissa Malfoy & Remus Lupin
When: 1/28 (night) & 1/29 (morning/afternoon)
Where: Fleeing Voldemort's compound and Remus Lupin's parents former house.
What: Running away!
After learning about what had happened to the other person who had tried to run away, Narcissa was panicked. Completely and utterly panicked. She was doing her best to avoid the other women she was currently living with. It was practically impossible though when the others had about as little to do as Narcissa herself. Narcissa was worried they would pick up on what it was she was thinking about and her mood. Perhaps it was an exaggeration, but Narcissa would not have been surprised if they were reporting to Rodolphus about her whereabouts and what she had been doing. Several times through out the week so far, Narcissa had found herself wondering if she was making the right choice. Maybe she should just go through with it, bear Rodolphus' children and whatever else she would need to do to repopulate the world according to the Dark Lord's specifications. But thinking about doing something like that with Rodolphus, unmarried and out of the blue, was disgusting... and Narcissa did not doubt for a minute that other men wouldn't come calling to ask the same thing of her. This was what You-Know-Who meant by the Pureblood women serving a purpose.
Narcissa wanted none of it. She did not want to be some sort of breeding machine for all sorts of different men. That would make her nothing more than just... a prostitute. Just the words made her shudder. She was a lady and would never submit herself to anything so vulgar. She couldn't. It was just wrong. Her mother would faint if she knew the things that her youngest daughter might be succumbing too. She was certain Lucius would not approve, even if it was the Dark Lord's wishes. Lucius may have been a Death Eater, but he wasn't heartless and he had truly loved Narcissa.
The lie had come easily, telling the ladies that she was going out to see the progress the men were making. It wasn't unbelievable. A lot of the women came and went, watching what was going on. There wasn't much else to do other than sit around amongst each other and gossip, or tend to the few things that was asked of them. She left the few things she had reacquired in the house. All of the things she had ever owned of value had been lost in the Manor and these new things meant little to her. She bundled up in the warmest set of robes she could find, tucked her wand inside of them and left the house.
The roof of where she and some of the other ladies were staying was poorly patched up and Narcissa could see that someone was up there trying to repair it better as she walked away. They seemed clueless and confused and were probably just making more of a mess than anything else. Narcissa hurried away so that there could be no question from them. She didn't really know where to go from here, knowing that people were watching the surroundings at all times. She just had to be lucky enough to find a way to make a break for it. Rodolphus was around out here, somewhere. Narcissa was praying with all of her might that she did not have the misfortune of running into him. Their meeting would not be pretty and she could only imagine what he would do to her if he found out what she was planning.
Lady Luck seemed to be on Narcissa Malfoy's side as she headed to the outskirts of the encampment. There was a lone Death Eater, sound asleep and leaning against a half-way chopped down tree. Narcissa cleared her throat, wondering if they were really asleep or not. After several tests, Narcissa deemed it safe to cross.
And the second she stepped by the man, she broke into a run.
Narcissa Malfoy was not terribly athletic. She never routinely exercised and she had never played Quidditch whilst in school. She wasn't out of shape, but it was not long before she was out of breath and clutching the limb of a tree, frantically trying to steady herself. The camp was still in view, several meters away. Narcissa had to get further away than this. She squinted, trying to see if there was any movement. Nothing. She turned and continued running. Every few meters, she would stop and sit, catching her breath and checking her surroundings. She traveled well into the night, stumbling aimlessly through the dark. Her robes tore and something sharp sliced at her skin, but Narcissa kept going. There was no point in turning back now. The only thing waiting for her back there was punishment.
Sometime well after midnight, Narcissa stopped and sat down in the middle of a snowy field that had bits and pieces of debris spread throughout it. There was a Muggle town nearby, still mostly in tact. She stared at it, wondering what was running through their minds, wondering if they were struggling in the same way witches and wizards were. Her thoughts strayed to the life she was living now and all that had been lost. She couldn't stop herself from thinking about the life she should have been having. With Lucius and Bella and everything whole and in one piece. Here she was now, stuck in worthless rags with a bum wet from snow and she was all alone. Narcissa hadn't felt truly clean in weeks and her hair was unbearably knotted and wavy and not a single spell she tried would fix it. Even brushing it furiously had barely helped. It was hopeless and even now, sitting in a field alone she worried about her appearance. She sniffled into the sleeve of her robes, something that she had always been taught was inappropriate and disgusting when she was young. Narcissa wound her fingers into her own hair and tugged, letting out a pitiful scream of frustration. Her fingers stuck in the knots of her hair as she tried to pull her fingers out, making her more irritated and frustrated.
Narcissa wanted to sleep, but not out in the middle of nowhere and especially not on a pile of dirt. She forced herself up and continued to blearily drudge through in an unknown direction. She saw no people, only hearing the sounds of the wilderness on occasion. A couple of times, she found herself frightened by an undecipherable noise and would stand completely still, even going so far as to hold her breath.
And would continue walking when she felt it was safe.
Daylight came slowly and when it finally arrived, Narcissa was exhausted. She was thirsty, hungry, and freezing. Her robes had slowly become more dirty and torn as she had walked. Narcissa had stumbled into sharp branches and bushes at an embarrassing rate. By mid-morning she was ready to fall over, tired and licking her dry and cracked lips to the point where the had bled. Finding a house that appeared abandoned in the middle of nowhere had been a godsend.
"Hello?" she called hoarsely. But no one replied. She found that there was running water and quenched her thirst before collapsing onto a couch in the living room. The couch was one of the dirtiest things she had ever seen, but at this point, Narcissa did not care. Besides, it wasn't like she was in the best shape either. It did not take long for her to fall asleep.
