WHO: Harrison Exley & Anja Weiss.
WHEN: Backdated to a week or so ago.
WHERE: The Bellowes Inn / Common Grounds.
SUMMARY: They get coffee!
WARNINGS: Apart from awkwardness I can't think of any!
Anja had begun to settle into a routine of sorts, which was fine, although she hoped to mix it up by getting an apartment so that it was a routine in an apartment. In which case she would be making her own morning coffee rather than walking out the door of Bellowes Inn to head to a coffee shop to get her morning coffee. Or perhaps not - because there was something nice when she didn't have very much in the way of interactions with colleagues and students to getting out of the house and around people. This morning as she stepped down the stairs she caught sight of the young man in front of her and recognized the back of his head. If she were going to tie herself to someone through Eliza and through a granddaughter, Harrison would not have been her first pick. This was just fact, but that didn't mean that Anja would bury her head in the sand and pretend that it wasn't truth. It was. She needed to simply move on with it. She put a smile on her face and decided to use the opportunity to at least move slightly forward towards a stronger relationship - hopefully. "Harrison, good morning," she offered as greeting as she stepped just a bit more quickly to catch up behind him. Some people would have found having so little to do extremely difficult. Type A people who needed to be busy every waking second. But Harrison wasn’t one of them, he had always been adept at finding his own entertainment and making things up as he went along. He only had one item on his to do list for today. Start looking into apartments. Easy peasy. A cakewalk. “Hi,” he turned at the sound of the now familiar voice. Eliza’s mom. Right. “Going for breakfast?” "Coffee," she responded easily. That part was simple enough. "And probably a pastry or something similar. I'm not a big breakfast person typically." Typically she didn't have much time for it. She could change that here, she supposed but she'd just have to change it back and that didn't seem practical. "Is that where you're headed? Breakfast I mean?" Was this what his life had become? Polite small talk with no hope of escape. Apparently. Because escape would mean risking upsetting Eliza, and that wasn’t something that Harrison was eager to do. “Coffee. I usually just get a coffee and go for a walk.” "Well, I wouldn't want to disrupt your walk," Anja responded. "But I will walk with you to get the coffee if you don't mind a bit of company on the way." It was polite, but it would be more awkward if they didn't walk together considering they were going to the same location. Particularly under the circumstances, which were that Harrison was going to be in her life for a while now. She needed to get used to him. That didn't mean she had an easy next question. Anja had never particularly excelled at small talk. She was comfortable in front of a classroom where the social boundaries were readily defined and she knew her subject matter. But this was not that. And Harrison in particular she struggled sometimes to connect with. After a few steps she took a stab at a topic. "I suppose you've seen more of Eliza with them not filming currently." Saying that he minded wasn’t an option, Harrison was well aware of this at least. So he nodded and impassively accepted his fate. Coffee and a walk with Eliza’s mother with no escape in sight. There were worse people, he told himself, but none that he would feel obligated to interact with in the same manner. “We do share a room,” Harrison took a stab at humor, “And she has been spending more time in it lately so…” Anja gifted him with a smile at his attempt, at least. Those things were both true, although she suspected that her daughter wasn't thrilled about having spent more time in the room. Albeit, perhaps this was more to do with work and less to do with Harrison. "And what do you do during the day?" She asked, glancing over at him. “Whatever I feel like,” he shrugged, fully aware that this was exactly the kind of vague response that parents didn’t like to hear. Harrison groped for something else to offer. “Mostly looking at apartments.” She supposed she could hardly expect responsibility from him and so when she asked and got an irresponsible answer, she couldn't jump on it. She kept a smile on her face as she jumped on what she hoped was the more responsible piece of that. "Apartments for you and Eliza? I didn't think she wanted to move out of the Inn." “Other people on the crew are moving after the whole ---” Harrison mimed a stabbing motion before dragging a finger across his throat, “so she thinks it would be okay now.” Anja gave him a slightly odd look. He could have just said murder, or Moira's death, instead miming and well… "I suppose if she's not the only one moving out that does make it different. I'm rather glad. She needs to have her own refrigerator and space while the baby is growing. It'll be easier to separate herself a bit from her work too." Harrison nodded along. “More privacy will be nice, living in an Inn was entertaining at first but,” he shrugged, “it got old fast.” "It's always nice to have someone else make-up your bed," Anja responded to this. Or sometimes it was. Sometimes it made her feel a bit as if she were not capable of taking care of herself, and that was less a feeling of nice and more a feeling of annoyance. "Have you any idea where you're going to end up yet? I was looking at a house, thinking perhaps it would be large enough for all of us," and get Alexi from his car, "but possibly you and Eliza would like your own space." “I would -- we would,” the knee jerk response came instantaneously along with a moment of blind panic. If Harrison had wanted to live with family he would have suggested staying in the Flores house, but he didn’t want to stay with family. He didn’t want to live with anyone but Eliza. A second later he offered a last ditch attempt to smooth things out a little, “I think we’re used to having our own space.” Anja hummed slightly. She wasn't overly offended by Harrison's response. Likely no one ever would really want to live with their in-laws, particularly when they weren't their in-laws, and were in fact, really no relation other than the mother of the woman that you'd gotten pregnant. "I'm sure you are. Well, I wish you luck, and if you need any assistance, please ask." She stopped outside of Common Grounds and reached for the door. "If you wish I'll buy you a coffee?" It could have been worse. Things could always be worse. Harrison shook his head. “It’s okay, I can get my own.” Anja looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "I don't doubt that, but I would like to buy you a coffee." Right. There was only one correct response here apparently. “Okay, you can buy me a coffee.” "Very well then," Anja smiled slightly. "After you then." |
