The Fall City Daily May 22, 2018 By: Hugo Hayes
For over a month now Fall City has gotten to know the actors and other crew members that are working on the film adaptation of One Hundred Thousand Lightning Bugs: The Unsolved Murder of Alice March. Among their number is Rhett Wyatt, the actor who will be portraying Ed March in the film. He reported to us that he didn’t audition for the role of March, rather Mr. Wyatt was offered the part and became immediately interested after reading the book three times. Wyatt explained, “I feel it was the most important source to get a real feel for the author's vision. You should see my copy. It's well underlined.” While it’s unsurprising to hear about Wyatt’s interest in the book - many readers across the nation also were interested in the same way, the subject of both the book and the film continues to be a point of contention for many people in our town. Many residents would like to move past the tragedy, but a number of others are still a little uncomfortable with the mystery that has persisted. Wyatt explains his interest in depicting a story based on a true story as being a large part due to how it is a character study. “It hits closer to home than a story based entirely in fiction. There’s a different kind of resonance to it. Getting a chance to feel for these characters and learn about them allows opportunities for introspection, and if necessary, change.” However, Wyatt is careful to explain that the film is primarily an adaptation of the book. When asked what kind of personal research he completed for the film he explained that he was only using the book as his research material, “Since this is an adaptation of L.B. Behr's book and not an adaptation of real events as far as anyone truly knows (And I would not encourage any viewer to consider this film as an accurate depiction of real events unless an investigation by those with authority deems the film's depiction entirely accurate) I do not find the actual events as important to the research as getting a feel for the setting and character motivations.” The answer seems considerate and trusting of the determinations that our then Fire Department Chief Charles Turner made about the cause of the fire that it was, in the Ex-Chief’s words, purely accidental. Considering the disagreeing views Wyatt still felt confident enough to claim, “If the resident likes the book, I think they'll love the film. If a resident doesn't like the book, I think they'll like the film better.” An interesting statement to make since we don’t yet know what the differences between the book and the film will be. When asked Wyatt explained, “[...] the book, was the work of one mind who's motivation is unknown. Lightning Bugs, the film, is the work of an entire team of talented people who are dedicated and passionate about creating a great film.” He was unwilling to speculate on what the motivation of that one mind might be, however, was happy to let us know he has appreciated his time in Fall City claiming it to be “A wonderful town with many incredible, fascinating, and accommodating people. I continue to be impressed by the people of Fall City every day.” |
