MICHAELA DAWLISH: …We are joined by the Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, Pius Thicknesse, tonight. Madam Undersecretary, what do you have in store for us tonight? DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Well! You see, there have been many--hem hem--concerns about the changes at Hogwarts. As you know, there will no longer be any magic-stealers, and in addition to that we have had a faculty change at Hogwarts. While the Hogwarts Board of Governors has decided to make their decisions a surprise, we can rest assured that all students are in very capable hands. MICHAELA DAWLISH: A surprise, Madam Undersecretary? DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Why yes, isn't it exciting? The Minister himself has supported the changes in staff. I've been privy to them myself and so I can say without any doubt that they are excellent choices. But don't just listen to me, we have Hogwarts students prepared to share their feelings about the changes at Hogwarts. Tell me, students, what do you think of the new mandatory attendance policy? TILLY DAWLISH: I don't see much difference between now and before; it wasn't as though I was thinking about not attending school prior to this year. The thought didn't even occur to me! Hi mum, hi da--- MICHAELA DAWLISH: That would be my sister, Matilda Dawlish. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: That's right. What a dear thing. She might be wearing more pink than I am! Now, let's hear from other students. This is a Slytherin named Tracey Davis who well understands the policy. TRACEY DAVIS: I see this as an indication that the Ministry is taking our education seriously, and hopefully will take steps to make sure it is more consistent than what it has been in the past. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Well! Hem hem. What a mature viewpoint. We could do with more students at Hogwarts like Ms. Davis. I hope that all Hogwarts students can understand that this policy is only to protect and serve our youth. Now, there is another policy that has been enacted this year. It has caused some raised eyebrows, and there are some who do not yet--hem hem--Understand that changes have been made for the greater good. But this year Muggle-borns, or magic stealers, as they are now called, will not be at Hogwarts. Let's hear from our Ms. Davis again-- TRACEY DAVIS: This is what my house founder, Salazar Slytherin, envisioned from the school's implementation. I am certain that he would approve whole-heartedly. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Wouldn't he? My own House, you know. MICHAELA DAWLISH: I hadn't realized. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: But let's hear from someone else now. This is Samson Capper, a Ravenclaw. He didn't have much to say on the matter, but what he did say was striking. SAMSON CAPPER: Now that we know the truth about Muggle-borns, I think it's important that we keep them away from us. I think I'm a reasonable person, but I don't want anyone continuing to take my magic. Muggle-borns never should have been educated with the rest of us. They're different and they need their own training and society. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Now, enough with what we do now! What don't we know? Hem hem. I do mean -- What do the rest of you not know? That would be who our new Headmaster is. But I asked students what they think are the right qualities for a Headmaster of Headmistress. This is what they had to say: DAPHNE GREENGRASS: I would hope that the new leader of our school would be level-headed, pragmatic, and have the best interests of the student body at heart. TILLY DAWLISH: The ideal candidate should also be understanding of the students' needs, because we face so many pressures on a daily basis; from academic to social, and sometimes one thing takes precedence over others. But mostly, the ideal candidate would be someone that is easily respected. MICHAELA DAWLISH: You have just heard from Daphne Greengrass and Matilda Dawlish once again. DOLORES UMBRIDGE: And I think they're right about what qualities are wanted in someone taking over Hogwarts. It is with great happiness that I share that the qualities wanted in such a Headmaster or Headmistress have been found! And with that in mind, it is time for me to say goodbye, and I hope you will all look forward to the announcement on September 1st. MICHAELA DAWLISH: Thank you again for taking the time to speak with us, Madam Undersecretary. We look forward to more developments... |
