Episode 1x09: The Puppet Show
original air date: May 5, 1997
Synopsis from www.buffyguide.com:
Giles has been put in charge of Sunnydale High's annual talent show by the new student-hating principal, Snyder. Buffy, Xander and Willow find it all very amusing until they too are forced into participating by Snyder, who sees them, especially Buffy, as trouble makers. Things get worse, however, when a member of the cast is found with her heart removed, leading Giles to suspect there is a demon at work harvesting organs. Buffy first suspects Morgan, a fellow student who has been experiencing extreme headaches, but when he turns up minus his brain the suspicion moves to his creepy dummy. Sid turns out to be hunting the demon himself and helps Buffy track it down, saving Giles just before he becomes the demons next victim.

Arc Significance:
This is the episode that introduces us to Principal Snyder who will continue to be a thorn in Buffy's side until the end of the third Season.
Sid the Dummy returns in the video game: Chaos Bleeds which takes place during Season Five.
Cordelia will sing "The Greatest Love of All" again on the Angel episode "Slouching Towards Bethlehem."
Restless moments: Willow's stagefright and Giles' role as the director.
Episode Goofs:
Sid kills the demon by stabbing it through the heart with a jumbo-sized kitchen knife, however in the next shot when Buffy is carrying the lifeless dummy away there is no knife in the demon's chest.
Notes & Trivia:
Principal Snyder is played by Armin Shimerman, who also played Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The scene that Buffy, Willow & Xander preform for the talent show is from Oedipus Rex. In repeated airings of this episode, this scene had been left out until after the series left The WB when it was restored to the DVD and all reruns.
Charisma Carpenter has said in an interview that the writers purposely made Cordelia sing in the talent show because they knew that she couldn't sing.
If you look closely when Buffy is looking for Morgan and she walks under the stage, on the wall behind her is a picture of Moloch.
This episode was the lowest-rated episode of the entire season, pulling in an audience of 1.7 million households.
Memorable Dialogue:
Xander: I have my pride. Okay, I don't have a lot of my pride, but I have enough so that I can't do this.
Principal Snyder: I know Principal Flutie would have said, "Kids need understanding. Kids are human beings." That's the kind of wooly-headed liberal thinking that leads to being eaten.
Principal Snyder: There are things I will not tolerate: students loitering on campus after school, horrible murders with hearts being removed ... and smoking.
Willow: Once again I've been banished to the demon section of the card catalogue.
