Community Status [08 Aug 2010|09:59am]

aaronlisa
So the community has been dead in the water since 2008. I am thinking of reviving it.

Would people be interested in doing a rewatch of the series from the very start starting in September?

As well would be people be interested in signing up for an episode and contributing either fanfiction, fanart, meta and so on?

Let me know what your thoughts are. A community such as this one really depends on participation and one of the reasons why it died back in 2008 was a lack of participation.

Episode: 1x08: I Robot... You Jane [22 Apr 2008|06:13pm]

aaronlisa
[ mood | sick ]

We missed our regular viewing last week due to IJ being down and I apologize.

Synopsis from www.buffyguide.com:
Willow has a new boy friend she met on the Internet and Buffy and Xander are worried about who he is. Also it seems that when doing some scanning Willow accidentally released a demon trapped in a book into the Internet and now he is causing havoc with files and recruiting helpers. After two of his goons attempt to kill Buffy she becomes suspicious that he may be Willow's new friend. Giles does a binding spell with the computer teacher, Miss Calendar, while Buffy and Xander track down Willow who has now gone missing. The spell works and the demon is trapped in a robot body that has been built for him but he doesn't last long as Buffy electrocutes him.

For a longer synopsis of this episode, you can read one here.

Goodies:

Episode Trailer

Episode Goofs:

Buffy's birthdate: On the screen as Moloch looks up Buffy's dossier (while the screen is still green and lists two others below her), her birthdate is shown as 10/24/80, her status as senior, and her GPA as 3.4. When the full dossier comes up, her status is shown as sophomore, and her GPA is shown as 2.8. Mere seconds later, when Moloch sends the dossier to Fritz, birthday is shown as 05/06/79, and her status is back to senior again. While Buffy is a sophomore at this point in the series, both birthdates are proven to be incorrect when Buffy celebrates her 17th birthday in January 1998 ("Surprise"), which means that she was born in January 1981. Mod's sidenote: It's rather interesting that this is the biggest goof in this particular episode. Although I don't know if we can really consider it as a goof or just Joss & Co. changing something to fit their story arc in a later episode.

Notes & Trivia:

In the scene after the credits, as Buffy and Willow talk in front of Willow's locker, a photo of Willow and Giles can be seen stuck to the inside of her locker door.

This is the first time we see the inside of Willow's house, and her bedroom.

Buffy's assertion that Xander is jealous of Willow's new "boyfriend" ("Yeah, but you got used to being the belle of the ball") implies that Xander is aware of Willow's unrequited crush on him, and that his awareness is common knowledge among his friends.

In the scene just after Willow is chloroformed, as Giles listens to the radio, the announcer is voiced by none other than BtVS creator Joss Whedon.

This episode is our first introduction to Jenny Calendar who will come to play a huge role later on in the series.

Mod's comments: I don't think that this episode is a popular one, in fact in one of the guides that I use as a reference, the writer actually states that despite the potential it has, it doesn't live up to it. Personally, I think that this episode is one that sets up the mythic arc of the story in a lot of ways and it's not just an episode preaching the perils of internet dating. For me, we meet Jenny Calendar and she'll become crucial in the second season. We also see that Willow is very unlucky in love, something else that will be revisited. As well, I think it's important for the audience to see that Xander really does see things and he's not that oblivious after all. This is one of those episodes where at the time, it's an okay episode but looking back at after having seen the whole series, things make more sense.

Up Next: 1x09 "The Puppet Show."

If anyone wants to help contribute anything such as icons, fanfiction, quotes, essays, please feel free to do so.

Needless to say, this community has fallen dormant. It didn't seem to garner enough activity to keep it alive, although I was impressed with how many people actually joined. I'm planning on closing the community unless somebody would be interested in taking it over. If that's the case then I'll most certainly pass the ownership over to you. Feel free to comment here or shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Thanks for the effort, guys.

I hurt so badly for Willow in this episode. I like the fact that I feel so invested in the characters, I think it's a compliment to the show, the actors, and all of the crew and their ability to totally ensnare their audience! Still, I go back and forth about whether I like the episode as a whole. What do you guys thinks? Does the plot seem a little weak or is this one of the better episodes of season 1?

Also, do you guys have any suggestions as far as the community and how it's going so far? Is there something in particular you'd like me to include in our weekly updates? Anything I could do without?

This is one of my favorite episodes of the first season. It brings a little bit of levity and shows off Joss and the writer's humor. I think it really sets the stage for what the viewers can expect out of this show - it's not all vampires and supernatural stuff. It has comedy and life lessons and painful irony and lots of lovely stuff.

Hey y'all,

This post is to let y'all know I'm going on a very short hiatus. My grandmother passed away last night, and I'm flying to California (from VA) for the funeral. I'm leaving hopefully on Friday, and I should be back Tues, but I don't know what kind of internet access I'll have out there, if any. I should still be reachable via my cell for those who have the number (if you want it, let me know-I love talking to folks) or AIM through my cell at blackpaiadin.

Apologies to the group that I won't be able to discuss anything about Buffy :-). But I should be back in time for the next episodes.

MOD UPDATE 2 [10 Jan 2008|04:44pm]

ex_thefirst459
We've reached 26 members! You guys know what that means ...

WE WILL OFFICIALLY OPEN THE COMMUNITY BY WATCHING WELCOME TO THE HELLMOUTH AND THE HARVEST ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2008.

I hope everyone is as excited about this as I am!

On a second note, I've made my decision in response to this post. I've decided that there will be no such thing as spoilers for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and Angel the Series. They've both aired and been in syndication for over 3 years and I think implementing a "spoiler" rule would limit the chance for good discussion and analysis while we're rewatching the shows.

However, once we've reached the end of the t.v. series and move on to the Buffy Season 8 comics I will implement a spoilers rule. But we don't have to worry about that for now.

GET READY TO RELIVE THE BUFFY AND ANGEL EXPERIENCE ALL OVER AGAIN, FOLKS.

MOD UPDATE 1 [09 Jan 2008|09:50am]

ex_thefirst459
I'd like everyone to read and respond to this post regarding 'spoilers' and how they will be handled in the community. Thanks!

We're 3 members away from opening! With the way the community is growing I'd venture to say that we may be able to start the community by watching Welcome to the Hellmouth next Tuesday, January 15! I'd like to remind you all that there is a link to this asylum in it's userinfo that is easy to cut-and-paste into your own userinfo or another post. I'd like to grow this asylum well beyond 25 members, so I'd appreciate any help you'd be willing to give in advertising it.

Thank you all for joining. I hope you're as excited to get started as I am! If you have any other questions, comments, or suggestions for me, please feel free to post them here.

Question about "Spoilers"... [09 Jan 2008|02:51am]

gabe_speaks
The idea of 're-reads' or 're-watchings' is always a welcomed one.

I participated in two Harry Potter re-readings leading up to the last book.

It was interesting mostly to see how the two groups handled 'spoilers'.

One group treated each chapter reading as if it were the first time they read it. That meant that people would try and remember the questions they had after reading the chapter initially. It was cute, but difficult, because that meant that if someone had a question, you couldn't answer it by mentioning a later book or chapter.

So, for instance: Questions about Harry's scar from Book One, couldn't be answered by quotes and other dead-giveaways from Book 2, Book 4, and Book 5...

Is that how this comm will function? I mean, it's kinda cute -- and fun -- and it would add to the 'reliving the moment' aspect of the community. But it is hard to maintain... but it may be worth it, yeah?

At any rate -- I can't wait!

BRING ON TUESDAYS, BABY!
