Making Plans
WHO: Darlene Wolff & Classified
WHERE: Outdoor Café on Caprica
WHEN: A few days before New Dawn.
The sun beat down on the colony in a quaint little café in the middle of the market place - a haven for the lost or a waiting place for those not lost but looking to be found. Darlene sat under the shade, eyes hidden behind dark lens as she waited with vested interest for her contact to arrive. It was always standard protocol for such meetings to be held in the public eye, hiding the truth from the innocent by flaunting it right under their noses. Time ticked like grain of sand slowly slipping down the hourglass. Darlene’s eyes ran around the points of interest, the points of vulnerability which stretched around the market place from left to right, right to left – it was hard to switch off the tactical appraisals. Her attention was retracted back to the immediate area, the few yards around her very being; the bright umbrella standing tall over the table, the barely dressed table based in front of her and now a strong figure dressed like a waiter standing over and too the right. His voice matched his physical stature, strong and willing.
“How are you today? Can I get you anything today?” The questions were fired out like bullets from a gun but his words barely scratched the surface of keeping her mildly entertained. He was physically imposing, well dressed and evidently not native to this colony. It was a handy skill, being able to read people like books. Her lips parted company, “I’ll have a water.” Darlene address the bulky waiter with a brief slide of the eyes before both then returned to oversee the area, watching for her contact to appear. The waiter walked off to get the order together while at the same time, gentleman in a neatly tailored suit approached with a small briefcase in tow. The gentleman pulled up a seat at the other edge of the table and sat opposite her. “Captain Wolff, I hope I didn’t keep you waiting for long, my shuttle was delayed.”
Darlene looked across the other side of the table in a moment of silence and then raised a small smile, taking her order of water from the waiter and allowing him to leave before replying, “How many times do I need to remind you that I am no longer a Captain?” She stared over the table while sipping her chilled water, expecting a reply.
His approached remained collected, calm and easy as he nodded with a faint smile revealed, his hands working at the security features of his brief case, “Of course.” After a few more moments of built up silence, his hands opened the case and removed a sleeve full of papers and a file, marked confidential and classified. He handed the file across with careful attention to the other patrons around.
A hand gripped the edge of the sleeve, judging the weight while pulling it across to her side. She placed it down in front of her, “What’s this?” Her eyes moved from the papers handed over to her contact, his attitude still cool and collected as he cocked a smile and straightened his tie. He was always a cool character, anonymous.
“That is your next assignment.” He clasped his hands together and placed them down on the table like he was at some formal business meeting while his eyes peered across to her, waiting for more questions, more reactions to what he had handed over.
Darlene maintained eye contact with him; an eyebrow rose as she opened the sleeve protecting the documents and slowly began to scan over them in a fruitless attempt to be on the same page as her anonymous contact. It failed. She closed the sleeve again and looked up, clearing her throat and taking a second to look at the surroundings before back to him, “My assignment?” It was easier just to ask for a summary than consult the pages upon pages of documents handed to her just now.
He leaned forward and lowered his voice, “How many times do we have to go through this Wolff? You know the procedure when it comes to our little meetings out here in the open.” Each word uttered that of what she had heard before and what he had said before, it was a quote of policy. His illusion that he was a business man was a perfect façade, made this whole meet seem like a job interview.
Tension was whizzing around the table as Darlene smirked at the little comment from him. He was a smug act, smart and resourceful and very mysterious but above all those qualities he had complete confidence in knowing all the plays beforehand. Darlene leaned back in her seat and crossed her left leg over right. “You should know the answer to that question.” He closed his now lighter suit case and took yet another look around before settling back on his company. His cool nature was always well practiced.
Darla sat for a moment staring across at him and then she sighed, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a metal case inscribed ‘Wolff’. She released the latch and her trained fingers reached for one of her special brand of cigars, long and thin. Darlene placed the cigar between her lips and brought the flame up, puffing a few before exhaling to the side. Darlene placed her lighter and cigar case back into her pocket and stood up, looking at him with a grin of acceptance. The two shared a stare and then Darla grabbed the files from the table and started walking away from the table but paused for a moment as if hesitant. He remained posed in his seat. She turned back around and motioned back towards him sitting there, checking out his calmness and then she smirked, placing the cigar back in her lips, inhaling and then exhaling right into his pretty face, “Until next time” Darla nearly let out a chuckle before walking off again, her new assignment being carried with her. It was a childish thing to do but her own personal assignment was to make him break somehow.
“Good luck,” His voice carried through the crowd and forced Darlene to pause again. She looked over her shoulder to where her table was but it was vacant, the crowd allowing her contact to leave unwatched or followed. A bright smile rose on her lips before she started walking again, heading home to review her new assignment in those files.
