Nothing More Important
WHO: Callie Morgan, Kylie Morgan (NPC), NPC Neighbors
WHERE: Glenrock, Aerilon
WHEN: Morning 07 Dec Y02
Two parents dead, no family to take care of the little one; it was an easy choice for Callie Morgan. She couldn’t let her niece work through the pain of losing both parents’ to terrorism alone. Her request for reassignment was approved, her position of distinction in the fleet was coming to an end as she shipped out for soiled ground in Glenrock, Aerilon. Her niece was close to her, at least the last time they saw each other which was a good year or so ago, the young lady was idolizing her. She wondered if that would be the same now.
The streets were busy, cars driving past, horns beeping, lights flashing, a real hot spot as Callie strolled along the pavement with a rucksack draped over her shoulder. Her niece had been in the care of generous neighbors and now it was her job to relieve with thanks those individuals and start to raise her niece. It wasn’t long before she was at the door and she had to admit a certain reservation about how this would go down. She knocked on the door and fought through the hesitation because inside was her niece, alone, frightened and confused.
After a moment or two, the door opened and Callie raised a smile as she was greeted by the friendliest of neighbors, her niece’s carers after the incident which left Kylie parent-less. “Hi...I’m...” Callie didn’t get to finish her introduction when little Kylie came racing through the hallway from behind the two individuals and latched onto her, shouting “Auntie Callie!”
Callie wrapped her arms around her niece with a warm embrace as she didn’t want to let go of her niece. Kylie was nearing sixteen but was still a young lady; she didn’t know terrorism or the reasons for people killing her parents. She heard muffled cries from her niece and Callie knelt down, “Hey, Hey, Hey! I’m here. Shh” He lightly rocked her back and forth as her own eyes started to tear up. She didn’t know what to do, what to say to make it all better and that was hurting her more than anything right now.
“Captain Morgan?” The female inquired.
It took a moment but Callie lifted her niece up into her arms, Kylie gripped around her neck for support as she continued to sob into her shoulder. Callie sniffed back and offered her hand, “Yes, Callie Morgan and thank you for taking care of her for me.” She shook both their hands with a nod of appreciation as thanks.
Callie brought Kylie back down so she could stand on her own two feet; she was too big to be carried now. “Why don’t you go grab your things sweetie and we’ll go get some ice cream.” Kylie nodded her head and started inside to get her things, knowing that she had family again.
“How is she?” Soon as Kylie disappeared into her makeshift room in the neighbors den, Callie had to ask the question because tears were one thing but she needed to know the full picture of her niece’s mental and emotional state.
“She needs you.” The man offered with strong backing in his voice.
The truth was there before he spoke it. She could tell Kylie needed somebody that was related to explain the reasons behind the twelve worlds and its craziness. “I know she does and I’m going to be here for her.”
“Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you military types are hardly family support. Can you truly be there for her when your job could take you up above the stars or too any of the other colonies?” The woman objectively questioned what Callie was already thinking about herself but that was why she requested this transfer specifically.
“I’ll be here for her, day and night ma’am because I’m all she has got and she is all i’ve got.” Callie replied.
“You have your career.” The man gestured, obviously ex-military.
Callie shook her head, “It isn’t as important as that little girl in there.” She smiled emotionally as Kylie came back with her things, what little she could carry. Her niece returned to stand next to her as Callie placed a hand on her little shoulder, “Say thank you to the nice people.” Callie nodded again her thanks.
“Thank you.” Kylie embraced them both with a hug for their generosity.
“Bye” Callie started to lead Kylie away from their door and towards her car, rucksack over one shoulder while her hand held onto her niece’s. Kylie was older, taller, heading towards womanhood but she was, in her eyes still a young girl needing to be saved from the corruption of colonial life. That was her job now, being a surrogate mother.
