A large box sat at her feet - a couple of holes in the back, facing her so that they couldn't be seen - and she was pulled up with her heels underneath her, curled up waiting for Charlus to arrive as they had discussed.

Sighing and putting the flyer on the side table along with a large pile of rejected mail, the princess leaned forward and picked up another letter from the pile.

They had done far worse, of course, but the staff didn't need to know that. Charlus would be far happier if they didn't, in fact. He sat down once the chair was cleared, resting his folder in the gap between his leg and the arm of the chair.

He was reaching down for the box when it moved slightly, causing him to jump back a little in alarm.

"Do I need protection to open this?" He asked, only half-teasing. He shuffled to the edge of his chair, reaching for the lid of the box curiously.

	Anaïs chuckled throatily, pushing the box forward with the toe of her shoe. "Not protection, no" she grinned. "But I would certainly make sure you're prepared for sudden movement." Inside the box, unbeknownst to Charlus, was a black Newfoundland puppy, his first official gift from his adopted country. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Charlus lifted the lid off the box a little warily, nearly dropping it as something moved, nudging against his hand wetly. His eyes widened as he spotted the puppy, who was nearly tipping the box over in its excitement at seeing people. Grinning, he lifted the puppy out of the box, laughing as it kicked its feet, wriggling in his arms and trying to reach his face to lick him enthusiastically.

	Unable to help giggling at his and the puppy's reaction, Anaïs shuffled over on the chaise to reach over and scratch it behind the ears. "Meet your engagement gift" she smiled, letting the not-so-small creature sniff her palm. "He arrived from Newfoundland this morning. "Oooft!" Charlus sat back, the puppy flopping heavily against his chest. Merlin, it was bigger than some fully grown dogs.

"He's fantastic," he said, grinning. "I can't wait until he's big enough to ride around the Palace." He was joking, of course, but he had no doubt that any children they had would almost be able to. And he was the perfect kind of dog for running about the hills in Scotland.

"Newfoundland isn't part of Quebec, though, is it?" He asked, quirking an eyebrow. "Or have things changed?" He knew there had been rumours, thought of Newfoundland joining the fold - the Quebecois ambassador had admitted that much - but he hadn't realised it was so close to becoming reality.

She laughed again, delighted at Charlus' reaction to the puppy. Her fiancé was, apparently, a dog person - but it was his nurturing side coming out that Anaïs found appealing.

"They're very outdoorsy dogs. They love the water" she told him, scritching the puppy behind the ears, receiving a lick in return.

"It will be as of next week. The negotiations finished yesterday" Anaïs replied, her voice slightly lowered than before.

Charlus buried both hands in the dog's fur, ruffling it as he scritched his way down his spine, laughing at the enthusiastic tail wag.

"Awww, well you can play at being a seal up at Eilean Donan, can't you?" He told the pup, his voice soft and lilting. He looked across at Anaïs, still beaming as he leant in and kissed her again softly.

"Thank you, love. He's wonderful."

Anaïs kissed him back, ignoring the awkward shuffle of one of the maids behind her. "You're most welcome, mon amour. I will pass on your thanks to the newest members of Papa's council" she smiled, watching as the puppy made the side-table rock with a thump of his tail.

"Incidentally, he doesn't have a name yet, so that's up to you" she added, picking up the fallen leaflets from her reject pile, as deposed by the puppy, and crossing to the fireplace to throw them on the low flame.

The maids could go hang; it was hardly an indecorous kiss, just a brush of lips against lips. He wondered how they'd cope looking after Addie for a few days - she likely did far worse.

"Hmmm..." Charlus narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, looking at the newest addition to his household. "I'll have to think about that. No point in giving you a terrifically unsuitable name, is there, boy?"

After they were married, Anais fully intended to kiss her husband however and wherever she liked - so in her view, sheltering the women was doing them a disservice. Oh well. She came back towards Charlus, reseated herself and picked up the next piece of post. It turned out to be someone advertising their services in monogramming soft furnishings. Rolling her eyes, she bunched up the paper and tossed it behind her, landing right in the fire without her even looking.

She smiled at the dog, now lying on his back on Charlus' knee. "He's taken to you" she said with a soft look at Charlus.

The puppy wasn't the only one who was smitten; Charlus was beaming down at the ball of black fluff, tickling his belly with both hands. He laughed as the puppy tried to chew on his fingers, proferring a knuckle and only wincing a little at the sharp prick of puppy teeth.

"Well, I am extremely likeable," he teased, glancing up at Anaïs with a knowing glint in his eye. He freed one of his hands from puppy paws and teeth, picking up the folder that he'd brought and handing it to her. "More for you to read, I'm afraid," he told her. "But I can promise they're all very sweet."

	Anaïs had picked up another missive to read, but instead accepted the folder as Charlus passed it over to her. "If you're like this with a small dog, I can't imagine what you'll be like when we have children" she mused, opening the file and reading the first letter. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Anais couldn't help but raise an eyebrow, a half smirk on her face at her fiancé's words. "Careful. Act like that too much and I will have to insist upon several French names for each one" she joked, knowing full well that Charlus would understand she wasn't really insisting on her culture's dominance. Even if she did suspect she would end up being the stricter parent.

"You're keen to have them straight away?" She asked, reading a message from the King of Spain with a smile on her face.

	Charlus merely shrugged, wrestling the puppy to the floor, watching as he starting lolloping around the table, all ungainly legs and oversized paws. The Princess quickly skimmed the box the puppy had sat in away from its path as it lolloped around, not having any care for where it was going. Almost childlike in his enthusiasm, she thought.

"That head of yours is mine" she quipped, not giving two hoots for whether they would have children first or not. Really, it was a blessing that no-one could guarantee the timing of, and resentment otherwise was petty. Finishing the letter, she smiled and set it back in the folder, smiling as she recognised the handwriting of her mother's cousin, the King of France.

	Anais hadn't noticed the expression on Charlus' face, absorbed as she was in her uncle-figure's letter. She bowed her head and closed her eyes at the reference it made to her mother, and took a couple of calming breaths. She wanted to be regal, and she wanted to be elegant - bursting into tears would not be fitting. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Charlus' soft smile melted away as Anais almost visibly curled in on herself. She was close to tears, and it was something in the letter she was reading that had upset her. "Darling?" 	Anais gently pushed the letter towards him across her lap, the King's missive containing a paragraph halfway down saying how proud her mother, his cousin, would have been to know she was marrying someone who could make her happy. Charlus took the letter, one hand resting on her knee as he scanned it quickly, his lips moving silently as he translated it in a rather half-arsed fashion. It was enough to get the gist though, enough to make him smile sadly as he set the letter down.

Leaning up, he kissed her forehead gently, his fingers tangling in red hair as he cupped her neck gently and held her close.

	"I wish she was still here" Anais murmured sadly, her head resting on Charlus' shoulder as he held her. His physical comfort was an undeniable help, but the letter only served as a reminder that her mother, her greatest friend on the whole world, would not be with her again. Anais closed her eyes and put her arms around Charlus' neck, noticing the soft touch of the puppy's fur without reaching down to pet him. When she rested her head on her fiancé's shoulder, the maids present stopped and ducked in a quick curtsey, before leaving them to their privacy. They knew that there would be no impropriety here, with the princess in her grief.

	Charlus kissed her forehead, gently rocking her in his arms. "She'll be watching," he whispered. "She'll be there." Shifting slightly he rested a palm against her chest, over her heart. 	Her hands shaking, Anais reached into her sleeve to pull out her handkerchief, dabbing her eyes again as the tears came. These were feelings that had been a long time coming, feelings she had kept buried so as to appear cheerful and pleasant rather than someone who whined and complained. (Reply to this) (Parent)
