Well, this week I discovered that a herd of thestrals were to be delivered to the reserve... when they showed up. That was a fun time.
Thank god Laura and I have been preoccupied this week, otherwise I definitely would have lost my shit.

Our bizarrely located Jobberknoll pairs have taken wing and headed back towards Botswana. While it's been incredibly unusual for them to be here in the first place, we're proud that they felt safe enough to return this year. And next summer, who knows? We'll have to wait and see if they make it three years in a row.

We've had a lot of very kind messages over the last few days about our future arrivals - we both want to thank you profusely for the lovely words. We are, of course, very excited by the news.

On a much less exciting note but a relief nontheless, the office radio (the one that forced us to listen to Parry Naysmith whether we wanted to or not) has now been fixed and we can listen to people who don't make anyone who stops by want to throw up in disgust. Success!

Today I discovered that the on/off and volume function on the radio in the Flying Creatures office isn't working. I discovered this because I had to listen to Parry Naysmith for nearly half an hour longer than any sane person would wish to, while she pontificated on many of the subjects she knows nothing about (and that's a LOT). Some of the 'highlights' included:

witches should stay home to look after their kids and not work after but OF COURSE THAT DOESN'T APPLY TO HER

registration shouldn't concern anybody with nothing to hide

in fact, it should be extended to part humans born outside of the Confederation being banned from residency on native soil

and, my personal favourite,

that it wouldn't surprise her if it was part humans who sparked off the witch hunt scare in Salem, not 'actual witches', but she didn't have time to, you know, actually do her research and be proved wrong.

I'm pretty sure that to turn this off, I'm going to have to destroy the radio, or at least schedule my office time for when the WWN Talk Radio Hour isn't on. However, they did have on Wanda Spell opposing her right after and she took her down in about three sentences, so that was some small comfort.

I'm thankful that our PSA about the Thunderbird population appears to be having an effect - last year we did have a couple of visitors break away from a tour to try and take their own pictures, which is ridiculous for a number of reasons. Ultimately, our number one concern is the safety of the breeding herd, and if that means laying into people who don't apply common sense, then we'll do what needs to be done.

In much lighter mood, though, we have three pairs who have laid eggs so far, which is already more than the last breeding season with another week or so to go. That's always a good sign, even if it's unusual for the Thunderbirds to breed in greater numbers than the Occamies.

All in all, it's a good year so far in the Flying Creature department.
