Summary: Theodore goes to ask Dumbledore about the symbol

He had prepared himself carefully before the meeting, and was confident that he knew enough on the subject to ask the right sort of questions. He was not as sure that Dumbledore would agree to answer said questions, but he would cross that particular bridge if and when he came to it.

His material in hand, he Apparated to the village with only a few minutes to spare. It was a village not too far off from Nott Manor and he knew it well enough to know he'd only need those few minutes to locate the right house. He walked briskly and at exactly 5 o'clock, he rapped on the door and waited to be let in.

The house elf opened the door, watching at Nott with suspicion. He knew the Notts, knew the reputation, nothing like the Master or Professor Dumbledore, but the Professor had said that he would be visiting.

"Be follow me," he said, none too politely as he slammed the door and walked toward the sitting room, turning often to make sure that the man didn't do anything untowardly. When they arrived in front of the Professor, he disappeared.

"Mr. Nott," he said with a slight nod of the head. "I must say that I'm surprised to hear from you." He gestured toward the armchair, before reaching for one of the cups of tea that were on the coffee table. "To what do I owe this visit."

Theo raised an eyebrow at the elves behaviour, slightly amused at the poor mannered creature. He found that it said something about the owner when an elf behaved badly, though of course he'd never say so out loud. Still, none of his own elves would ever dream of being anything but polite to guests in his house. They respected him far too much to shame him in such a way.

"Thank you," he said to the elf as they entered the room, just before it Disapparated. "Professor Dumbledore," he then said, turning his full attention towards the other wizard, following his example and nodding in greeting before taking the offered seat.

"I was hoping you'd help me with a bit of research I'm performing at the moment," he said, getting right to the point of the visit. "A few days ago, the Dark Lord contacted me and expressed interests in a certain symbol, used by Grindewald at one point. He asked, well demanded rather, that I'd find out its meaning and history. Naturally, I've discussed the matter with the Minister, and we decided it would be in our best interest to find out just what about this symbol that interests him so." That was a lot more honest than he usually was in these matters, but Professor Dumbledore was a man who it was best not to lie to, or even tell half truths to. That much he remembered from his school days, and he was not about to be so foolish as to try either when the truth worked just as well.

"The reason I am asking you is because wherever I turn in my research, your name seems to come up, especially in connection to Grindewald. I was hoping you'd be able to shed some light on the matter for me."

He pulled out a piece of parchment with the symbol and put it on the coffee table in front of Dumbledore. "I'm sure you know it already, and I'm hoping you'll know its history as well."

Albus was surprised to have a Slytherin like Nott come to ask for help. It was even more surprising that he was asking for help with Tom. He had made that offer to Draco, it seemed and he had refused, not believing that he could help. Now, Nott and Narcissa were both looking at him for help. He liked it.

He picked up the parchment, although he really didn't have to. He knew that his encounter with Tom would have clued him in, but he was surprised that he was going to Nott for information.

His fingers traced the symbol, almost with affection, not for the mysteries it held, but for a time when things were much too simple. "Yes, Gellert and I found it when we were very young. He then adopted it as his own." He looked up at Nott. "What will you do with the information I give you?" Not that he had any intention of telling him the truth. He had written down enough lies about the Deathly Hallows that even if Nott found those books he hadn't recovered, he'd find more lies to confirm his words.

Theo smiled, not surprised at the question. In fact he approved, as it was a question he would have asked himself. "That depends on the nature of the information," he answered calmly. "If it is harmless, unimportant, then indeed I intend to pass it on, make sure the Dark Lord trust in my assistance."

He leaned back in the chair, folding his hands in his lap. "If, however, the information is of a more sensitive nature, then careful consideration will have to go into what parts to pass on, if any, and which parts to bury so deep that they are accessible to no one."

The Department of Mysteries was a fabulous place to hide those things which should never rise to the surface, indeed there were even rooms for it, though to find said room was impossible, unless you were the head of the department, or course. There were some perks to the title.

"The best way to bury information is never to share them with anyone," Albus pointed out, which was exactly what he planned to do. Lies were a necessary evil in a war.

"Not that it matters in this case. Nothing I tell you can help you or Tom," he said. "It was something that we found. It has more of a sentimental value for me and Gellert." He looked up at Theodore, smiling. "Unless Tom would like to start a romantic association with me, I doubt it will be of much help."

He sat back, looking completely relaxed. "We found the symbol when I was eighteen. We were young and we were going to take over the world. We saw this and researched. We only found vague references to myths of immortality, but there were a lot of myths and no facts, but the symbol had a meaning for us."

Theo smiled. "True," he answered. "Though if these myths were found by you and Grindewald when you were only 18, then surely the Dark Lord can find the same myths if he were to look," he pointed out, not mentioning that so could he. Especially now when he knew in what area of research to start.

He did not comment on the notion of Dumbledore in a romantic relationship with anyone, because frankly the idea was more than disturbing and one he'd rather not ponder.

"We all know that the Dark Lord is obsessed with immortality, perhaps it is better to give him some information, to satisfy his need to look further?"

Albus smiled brilliantly. "Oh, feel free to look. If there was anything to find, we would have found it long ago. Remember that I was born in 1881. If books didn't exist back then, the chances of existing a hundred and forty years later are even more remote."

He looked at the other man placidly. "Mr. Nott, Tom was not the first man who wanted power. When I said we wanted to take over the world, I meant that very literally. I stopped, Gellert didn't. Either way, we would have found what needed to be found, and if we had, it would have disappeared long before now." He couldn't be sure that everything had been destroyed, but he'd done a very good job at burning books. The very little that remain was a maze of confusion and untruths.

"You can truthfully tell him that the Ministry has nothing on the subject," he said. "The rumours are just that, rumours about objects that when put together can grant you immortality. What those objects are and where they might be, if they were real in the first place, have been lost."

Theo nodded, filing that information in his mind as well. Objects, put together, immortality. "And this symbol, where does that fit into the myth?" he asked. "For my own curiosity," he added with a small smile, not that he truly expected an answer.

"Again, we aren't sure. We thought that it represent some sort of spell that made these objects special, but again, it's conjecture." He smiled. "However, if you want to know why Gellert used it, that's much simpler. We spent a lovely summer together researching that symbol. It became a symbol of hope and expectations. I like to think that it was also a sign of love and friendship, although things didn't turn out as well as we wanted."

Theo nodded, though of course he would make sure to check for himself. Now that he knew that this symbol was connected to a myth of immortality, the request seemed much more understandable.

A spell? Perhaps. Perhaps something different. Either way, there were objects connected to this myth, objects, which if they existed, the Dark Lord would go to great lengths to find. That could be used. He wasn't sure yet, but he would be. In time. He was always a patient man.

"Well," he said. "If you have nothing more to tell me, I will not take up more of your time, Professor. I thank you for the time you've already spent on me and hope you will be in touch if you remember anything else."

He stood up, nodding towards the man. "It was good seeing you again, Professor."
