RP: The Dark Lord and the Rat
Who: Lord Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew
Where: Diagon Alley, a remote location in the English countryside
When: 15 November, 2024
Rating/Warnings:
Summary: Lord Voldemort decides it's time to take Potter's bait.

The past two weeks since Dumbledore's return had been trying on Voldemort. Dumbledore was the only one who could stop Him, and that knowledge frustrated the Dark Lord to no end. Finally, He had decided it was time to determine just how faithful a particular traitor might be.

Voldemort knew about Peter Pettigrew's past from the October Prophet and the history books (or at least what was in them about Pettigrew). He also believed this was designed to trap to Him. He guessed the Ministry hoped to lure Him and Peter into a meeting and then spring a trap. Whether He was right or was being paranoid was of no consequence to Voldemort, He would meet with Peter without risk to His own life and if He took several aurors out in the process, then that was fine.

The wizard was middle-aged and fragile. So weak. So easy to manipulate.

Imperio, Voldemort thought and then ordered the stranger to do His bidding. The stranger walked to Peter Pettigrew's flat and delivered a package.

In the package was a wizarding chess piece and a note. The note, written in ancient runes, read, "Break the piece. The satisfaction of your desires await.." Voldemort had guessed of Pettigrew's passion for runes from the public records.

After placing the stranger under the imperius curse, Voldemort portkeyed to the meeting location and awaited Peter's arrival. The house was protected by the fidelius in addition to being unplottable and unobservable to Muggles. Voldemort knew the tracking charms that He guessed were in place on Pettigrew would lead any aurors to the general vicinity of the meeting place. But He also knew that there was no way they could gain access to the building without His consent.

Either the man would show and thus begin to prove his loyalty to the Dark Empire or the man would not show and prove his allegiance was to the status quo.

"Your skills of deduction are quite impressive, Pettigrew," Voldemort hissed derisively. This was the wizard who had been entrusted with the Potters' safety?

"What's in it for you? Power and might that you could never dream of. The opportunity to practice the runic and arithmanic magics you are so fond of. And not just in the limited Ministry-approved ways. There is much more to magic than you would've learned at Hogwarts. There is more to magic than most of wizardingkind suggests. And it is in those areas - areas that only I have tread - that the true secrets of power are found."

Voldemort paused before continuing. "You have been given a pitiful way of life. Forced to live on the Ministry's stipend. Shunned by society. Because you once dared to pursue that power. Tell Me, Peter, that is how you want to live."

Peter didn't bother to hide his eyeroll this time. This was the man he'd decided to throw his lot in with? He could rival Sirius with his air of dramatic. He had to admit though, that the idea of being able to pursue the studies he wanted was alluring.

"I don't want power," Peter said, completely truthfully. "I want to be left alone. And to be honest, I'm getting that now. Sure, the flat is small but it's nothing I'm not used to. There's no cockroaches this time around."

He eyed Voldemort, not at all impressed yet, with what the other wizard was saying. "As long as I'm left alone, I don't really care. And you didn't answer. What's in this for you? I don't for a minute believe you've contacted me out of the goodness of your heart."

Neither anger nor frustration crossed the Dark Lord's face. He waited for Peter to finish talking to ensure he did not expect what Voldemort was about to do.

In a lightning-fast gesture, Voldemort withdrew His wand and jabbed toward Peter. "Crucio," He said, calmly and coolly as if He was casting wingardium levioso.

Voldemort strolled around Peter as he flailed on the floor, letting Peter's screams of pain fill His mind. "You want to be left alone, Peter. Here's the first step toward that: Don't roll your eyes at Me. And do not compare Me to that blood traitor Sirius Black."

He lifted the curse, put Peter back in the chair, and summoned food. "Now eat. You are famished."

Voldemort returned to His own chair. "What's in this for Me? There are undoubtedly people who will seek you out because of your past service to Me. People who once followed Me. You will report to Me on their identities and behavior."

Afterwards he felt like he was going to be sick. It was nothing like what Jacob used to do to him in bed; that had been consensual, and out of love. On Peter's side at least, though immediately after having the thought he wished he hadn't. Voldemort would know now. And it hurt too much to think of Jacob, more than the Cruciatius curse had done.

He felt weak, his limbs shaking, and the thought of food made his stomach rebel. But he didn't want another curse like that, and he could see, finally, that he'd been foolish. He wouldn't be again. If there was one thing Peter Pettigrew was, it was self serving.

He picked up the fork and forced the first bite down. "It's likely I'm being watched," he said when he was sure he could speak without throwing up what he was eating. "But you knew that, when you summoned me here."

As Peter recovered from the cruciatus curse, Voldemort caught the same thought over and over again: Jacob. Who was Jacob? Voldemort would find out. He would give Peter the chance to tell Him the easy way.

He watched carefully as Peter ate. He was sure that it was the finest food Peter had eaten since he returned.

"Yes, you are, but you will have to get used to that, for if their spells are removed then they will make your life even more miserable." Voldemort explained. "Who is Jacob?"

Peter thought carefully before answering, though he knew now it would do no good to lie. And he didn't want a repeat of the curse. Especially not now that his stomach was full. He wouldn't unman himself in front of Voldemort by being sick, and he didn't care if Voldemort caught that thought.

"He was my lover," he said finally. "A Death Eater. And I'm pretty sure his mission was to get close to me to find out any secrets he could." He'd pieced it together over the months. He wasn't stupid, after all, and there wasn't any other reason a man like Jacob would have been interested in him. He'd loved the man though, despite it all. And he'd kept his secrets after he'd died. Until now. "He's dead now. Killed by the Order."

"See how much easier life is when you just do as I ask, Peter?" Voldemort said in response to Peter's explanation of Jacob Selwynn. He didn't care that Peter was gay. Voldemort never saw much use to keeping or maintaining that social taboo.

"And how would you react if Jacob returned from the dead?" Voldemort needed to know if Peter would pose a threat. Granted, He had no idea if Jacob would return or if Jacob would remain loyal to the Dark Empire.

Peter snorted, but he couldn't argue with that. He also dind't know how to answer Lord Voldemort's question. He thought for a moment, finishing off the plate of food and thinking he hadn't been so full since before he'd left Hogwarts.

"I don't know," he finally said. "I try not to hope for things that will likely never happen." He sighed and looked at Voldemort, careful not to make eye contact. "Why does that matter?"

Peter avoided His eyes, which meant the wizard was learning, albeit slower than any useful servant would. "It matters, Peter, because if you stood in the way of one of my servants returning to Me, then you and I would have a problem. You don't want us to have a problem, do you?"

Voldemort rose. "You may come and go from this house, apparating in and out as you please. I have not removed the tracking charms from you, for to do so would raise even more suspicion than you being somewhere they cannot find. As slow as the Ministry is, they will eventually work out that you are in a fidelius charmed building and will suspect you of acquaintance with a wizard powerful enough to cast such a spell. Serve Lord Voldemort well, and you may keep coming to this house. Cross Him and you will know more pain than you could ever imagine."

The Dark Lord disapparated, without so much as a pop, before Peter could respond.
