Hunted
Date: 16th January 2012
Time: 12:02pm
Location: Main Street
Characters: John Irvine, Lux Warren
Description: We're being followed.
Status: Private, complete.

John frowned.

"It was thirty bucks last week, Pete," he said, one hand upturned in protest. "Now it's forty."

"Tough times, John," the man behind the counter replied, nonplussed. Peter Adams was a decent kind of guy, most of the time. Pushing sixty, with thinned grey hair that he refused to simply shave off, his glasses gave him a hint of intellectualism that John found quite affecting. He'd run the auto shop in town for as long as John could remember, and he'd always been kind. From giving the neighbourhood kids candy on Halloween, through to sneaking him a beer from the 24/7 when he was 18, John had a lot of time for Peter Adams. "We're not doing the same kind of business we used to, not with that big pit shop open now in Summer."

It was true. As the other towns around Crescent Cove began to grow, it seemed as if the town itself was shrinking every day. Shops were closing, chain stores opening at an alarming rate. The change didn't seem as noticeable to the newer or younger residents, but for those who'd lived their entire lives there, it was more than a little saddening.

"But I'll tell you what," he continued suddenly. "Since it's your birthday, how about we say 20 and call it square."

"You remembered," John smirked. "Here I was thinking you didn't care."

"Yeah, well, don't let anyone know," he grumbled, filling out a reminder slip. "Otherwise I'll have that Larson girl in here for a full revamp of her engine faster than you can say clapped out. Come back tomorrow, I'll have the brakes tuned up and the oil changed."

"Thanks, Pete." John smiled, pocketing the slip of paper. "Appreciate it." The older man waved him off with a grunt, which John took as a good bye. Stepping out of the mechanic's shop, the broad sunshine and the crisp cold air hit him suddenly, forcing him to button his long coat against the chill. Around him, the assorted residents of Crescent Cove milled through the high street, dropping in to shops and out of them with the kind of languid stroll that seems to happen when a few hundred people are busy shopping, but not really buying anything. Pausing for a moment off to the side, he pulled his notepad from his pocket, crossing off one of the tasks written down on it, before he felt his cell begin to thrum urgently in his hand. Staring at the screen for a second, he thumbed the 'answer' button.

"Hey," he said into the mouthpiece, lifting the handset to his ear.

The last thing Lux Warren had ever expected was for John to cast his vote in favor of her leadership. Why had he done such a thing? It still made no sense. Everything leading up to that very moment had suggested otherwise to the petite brunette. He didn’t want her to be leader, what had changed? To say she was baffled was an understatement. A week had past since that faithful night—what seemed important carried less importance to her. She couldn’t forget his face, nor could she miss the slight hesitation in his voice.

Something was different, something had changed. She didn’t know what it was but she was going to figure it out. While she had been gone for quite some time, Lux hadn’t forgotten what day it was. No matter how she had tried to push him from her mind, she knew it was his birthday. Emerald hues glanced out the window, perched up on her window seat overlooking the ocean. With her head leaned against the cold glass and a book in her lap, she stared at the keypad of her phone.

The pad of her thumb hesitated over the call button. For the first time in a long time, she was home on John’s birthday. Hesitantly she unconsciously chewed on her lower lip. The house itself was quite, her father William was out in the stables while her mother was visiting friends in town. She was left virtually alone in the empty house, left to her own thoughts. Stubbornly she snapped her phone down into her lap. This was absolutely pointless!

Without thought, she blindly grabbed her heeled booted and slipped them on over her jeans. Pushing off the plush cushions, her feet would carry her to her bedroom door before she stopped. Taking in a deep breath, she glanced back down at her phone. Before she could stop herself for a second time, she dialed. The echo of a ring would sound in her ear as her arms crossed over her chest. At the sound of his voice, she wavered before responding.

“John…”

Voice trailing she raised her fingers to her temples, gently massaging them. This was unorthodox, even for her.

“Where are you?”

Subconsciously her mind was telling her that this was a bad idea. Before she had the chance to decipher her own motives, she fumbled around her room for her jacket. In five minutes she was out the door with her phone still to her ear. It took another two minutes to find herself in her car and pulling away from the long driveway.

“I’ll meet you there.”

Tossing her phone onto the nearby seat, she drove away to the main town.

He hung up the phone and stared at it for a moment, before sliding the handset back into his pocket.

Okay.

That, he hadn't expected. He'd had text messages and calls from people all morning, as was customary for someone without a Facebook account, it seemed, including one relatively indecipherable message from Alvaro that seemed to have a through-run of getting drunk somewhere. And one from his mother, naturally, reminding him about dinner tonight for his birthday. He hadn't expected a call from Lux.

Nor was he certain that he was looking forward to it particularly, or at least, he had no idea what it was about. If she was at her house now, he figured it would take her at least five minutes to get here, if not longer. He crossed the road and ducked into the Starbucks, buying a coffee, before sitting on an outside table.

His mind drifted back to the other night, and the vote. He didn't regret what he'd done, or the reasons for it. The outcome, perhaps, he wasn't sure about, but he'd had the interests of the Circle at heart.

He shifted in his seat, unable to get comfortable. Something was pricking at the corner of his senses. Something familiar, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. He settled instead for a sip of scalding coffee, ignoring the background interference for the time being.

For the hundredth time on her way there, Lux questioned her reasoning. It was too late to do anything about it as she parked her Ford Escape near the docks. She had completely ignored the fact that it was his birthday, despite the fact that she had knew it as well as her own. Fiddling with her keys, she locked the door as her feet carried her to the Starbucks two blocks down.

Her ponytail would swing gently from side to side, as it would brush against her back. The dull click of her heels was overshadowed by the thoughts flowing through her head. She barely noticed the ends of the hairs on the back of her neck tingle as she passed a darkened alley.

What was her reason again? She had none. Wonderful. Sarcasm filled her mind as her mumbles remained incoherent. Lifting her gaze, her feet stopped as she caught sight of him in the distance. He was sitting at one of the outdoor tables simply waiting for her.

Part of her wanted to turn around and walk the opposite directions. Sunlight streamed as it glinted against the medium sized hooped earrings she had worn at day. The cold wind had caused a natural blush to spread across her skin as she steeled herself to approach him. Holding onto the strap of her bag as if it were a life and death situation, Lux weaved in and out of the few pedestrians on the street.

When she finally made it towards him, she found herself waving a gloved hand in his direction as a hesitant smile made it’s way onto her lips.

“Starting early today?”

She pointed towards the cup in his hand as she took the seat across from him.

"Yeah, well," he picked up the cup, titling it in her direction. "You're only 26 once, may as well live the dream."

He glanced in the direction that she'd come from, across the street. Pedestrians milled this way and that, cars crawled by at the kind of speed that was a little too fast to be considered a crawl, but too slow to be full pelt. Something was still nagging at him.

Blinking a few times, he looked back at Lux opposite him. The chill had flushed her cheeks, while the slight breeze played at her hair, refracting off the cold sunlight. He pulled his gloves further down his fingers as he took another sip of boiling hot liquid.

"What's up? You wanted to see me?"

A question plagued her mind the moment she sat down, as clear as a bell. Emeralds met jade hues before she looked down at her hands. Every time she was around him, a knot tightened in the pit of her stomach.

“And you’re living it large I see.”

A smirk curled as she deposited her keys into her bag. She could sense the shift in tone though; he was as confused by her call as she was. Mentally shaking her head, gloved fingers laced together.

“Yes, I did.”

She paused for just a moment.

“Mind if we take a walk?

For some reason she couldn’t bring herself to start the conversation sitting directly across from him.

"Yeah," he replied, pushing himself out of the chair. For some reason, his eyes kept being drawn back to the alley across the road. For a moment, it looked like there was someone standing there, perfectly still. He frowned, as a van passed his field of vision, obscuring the entrance for a brief moment. When it passed, the mouth of the street was as empty as it had been a moment before.

He picked up his coffee before sliding the chair back under the table.

"I've got a few things I need to do before I go over my mom and dad's, anyway. You can ride shotgun if you like." They set off from the Starbucks, coming back onto the main thoroughfare as they walked. He had an idea of what she wanted to talk about, but if he was being completely honest, it wasn't something that he really wanted to confront on today of all days. There was, however, a sense of the inevitable about it.

Even now it was strange, walking down Main Street with Lux. It wasn't just because of the inherent disapproval from both of their families, should they be seen - which, knowing them, they already had - but it just felt alien, and familiar at the same time.

He felt goosebumps crawl up his back, suddenly, as if someone had walked over his grave. What was wrong with him, today?

"I guess you want to talk about the other night?" He asked, leadingly, as they passed a few shopfronts. The foot traffic wasn't horrendously busy at the moment, they could more or less amble down the wide pavement without too much weaving, and at a leisurely pace. He glanced over at her.

Standing from her chair, Lux would walk beside him down the main street. She could remember a time when she would sneak into his room just before the sunrise to be the very first one to wish him a happy birthday. It had been a ritual she had started from an early age, propriety had never entered her mind for a moment. Things had been so simple then, before the world had become complicated by their newfound reality and her unspoken feelings. Feelings which were buried for good, or so she thought.

The flashback was gone as quickly as it had come. Her silence would have been apparent. Clearing her throat to break up the silence, she nodded.

“Sure, what’s first on the list?”

She held off her question for as long as she could. The petite brunette felt as though she was right back up on that cliff almost three and a half years ago. Her world was upside down; she didn’t feel like the same Lux standing before the others during the vote. The same vote which had caused all the controversy and a surprising twist of events. Every muscle in her body tightened as she could feel the heat radiating off his body—he was so close she could breathe in the pine and sandalwood scent with a mixture of the salty sea air. It was comforting to her.

“Why did you do it?”

To admit her surprise with little to no prompt had not been her intention, but she couldn’t understand it. They passed the Abrams family bakery on the left as they continued on.

"I put my ride in the shop, I just need a few basics," he said distractedly, as the scent from Alvaro's parents' bakery drifted outwards, enticingly. He forced one foot in front of the other to get past - it may never be too early in the morning for a beer on your birthday, but it was definitely too early for a heart attack.

"Why?" He asked rhetorically, before taking another gulp of his coffee, draining the cup before tossing it in the nearest waste bin. "That was going to end one way, with division. I didn't vote for you, Lux. I voted to keep the Circle together, they were pissed enough that we forced the vote on them anyway. A split would have caused more problems than it solved." He smiled sadly, looking askance at her and dropping his voice as someone passed close to them. "For better or worse, you're the leader, now. Don't screw up."

His pace slowed as the gooseflesh made its way up his arms again. Stopping abruptly, he looked over his back.

"Can you feel-" he began, then shut up, as the world around him suddenly stopped.

Well, not stopped, but the volume dial seemed to suddenly spin back to zero. It took him a moment to realise that he couldn't feel anything - the undercurrent that had been accompanying everything in life since Lux had come back to Crescent Cove, and the Circle had been complete again. It was as if something had gagged his extra sense.

Then he saw the figure, notable by its stillness in the throng of people moving around him, a hood pulled over his head. It all started to make a horrible sense - the feeling of being watched, and the particular taste of that sensation he couldn't place earlier. Suddenly, he knew exactly where he'd felt it before, and when. The figure remained still, its head bowed, but John knew that it was looking directly at him, at them. He tried to reach out with his Gift, to probe whoever he was, but try as he might, nothing would work.

The figure took a step forward.

John turned, taking Lux by the arm and moving forward.

"Move," he hissed under his breath. "Don't draw attention, follow my lead."

She listened, a change for her. Lux Warren was used to directing any and every conversation. Not everything was as black and white as it seemed though. She could feel eyes dart in their direction; she wasn’t sure where the others would be at this time.

“Sounds absolutely thrilling.”

Her usual sarcasm was absent; instead her light banter would replace it. She knew his answer should have been obvious to her, but the last thing Lux wanted to do was assume anything. The brunette knew his past, but that didn’t automatically give her the right to assume his present state of mind. She knew the balance of the circle was delicate. Although she hadn’t realized the full complexity of it a week ago. What the others failed to realize was that the circle was not a game to her. It wasn’t just another prize and award to be won. She had her reasons for pushing the vote. There was much she had learned in Boston, not all of it was sunshine and roses.

“I don’t intend to….”

In mid-step she halted, turning to meet his gaze momentarily.

“I have my reasons John, you may not understand them but they aren’t all selfish.”

Lux wasn’t sure why she had admitted that to him, but after that faithful night, she felt she owed him that much. It may not have logically made sense to her, but it just felt right, for lack of a better term. Clinging to bag, she continued on as they trailed on. At his abrupt stop though, a brow raised in confusion. She hadn’t noticed in previously and yet something had tickled the tiny hairs at the back of her neck. If she hadn’t been so preoccupied she might have caught the scent early. A look of concern crossed her porcelain features as she took off after him.

She was caught off guard by his firm grip, which had sent a tiny thrill through her system. Forcing the unexpected jolt away, Lux nodded and followed wordlessly. Before they took off, she couldn’t help but to follow where his gaze had been.

“Where are we going?”

She hissed back as she attempted to keep up with his long strides down the sidewalk.

"I can't use anything," he murmured. "Twenty feet back, hood up, I felt his magic before." He spared a glance over his shoulder, the person was following them steadily, moving between people and gaining on them. "It was all over the body that Eva and I saw."

He became aware that he was still holding Lux's arm. He relax his grip. "Left," he said, as they turned onto the Broadway.

"Fifty feet ahead, turn into the alley. There's a stock yard behind it, it's been out of use for months. Can you use any magic?"

She couldn’t explain why but the moment she felt his grip loosen, a wistful feeling had overcome her. There would be enough time to decipher whatever latent feelings existed; she trusted John’s instincts enough to realize the situation. Taking the next left, she picked up the pace as she spied the alley further ahead. The sun remained high in the sky, offering enough light to guide them.

“Whatever it is, it’s not affecting me.”

His panic was evident, whatever hold was placed on John had not effected her. She could still feel the energy coursing through her body from her family’s crystal. She needed to buy them some time, somehow. Turning into the alley, she spied the stockyard just up ahead as she turned to look behind them. While she couldn’t make out their pursuer, she could definitely feel something lurking in the shadows.

“Once we get inside, I’m going to create a diversion, alright?”

Whatever it was, somehow their pursuer was connected to the murder on the docks. How she wasn’t sure. The time for questions would have to wait for later.

“Stay close!”

Ducking inside the stockyard, she guided him behind a series of crates taking the lead. Her heart beat furiously against her chest as she pulled out her necklace. Ripping off one of her gloves she violently grasped the family stone. Long lashes fluttered closed as she pictured an exact replica of the two of them, a decoy running in the opposite direction of where they were. If he was tracking them by their magical scent, the decoys would be identical.

His back pressed against the crate, he craned his head out to the side. Whatever Lux was doing, it wasn't working. The figure made his way through the gate and stopped, taking in his surroundings.

John watched as he fumbled inside his pocket, pulling out something that glinted in the sunlight. As he watched, it glowed ever so slightly, and the figure's head snapped up to look exactly where they were concealed.

"It's the crystal," he whispered. "He's using it to track... me, I think. If you can shatter it, we'll have a chance."

”What do you mean he’s tracking you with it?”

Her voice raised above a furious whisper as her thoughts were drawn to the warm arm pressed against her own. He was so close and yet…mentally shaking her head she forced those thoughts away. Emeralds hues met with the crystal he was holding. Whoever was chasing them had the ability to tap into the crystal’s energy. She wouldn’t be able to break it on her own, which left her with only one option. Damn.

“I have no choice, you can yell at me later.”

Lux didn’t exactly explain what it was she would be doing though nor would she give him the time to question her as she gave him the familiar look he would be so accustomed to. Reaching back inside her jacket, she pulled out the crystal drop he had given to her that faithful night. He would of course notice, how could he not? In order for the spell to work, she needed to connect with him. What better way to do so than by using the exact same crystal he had created out of thin air with his own magic?

With both crystals in hand, she grabbed the wrist of his outstretched hand. Channeling her abilities she allowed her subconscious to leave her body. While in Boston, she had learned the true gift of her family’s abilities—a lost art. If something was blocking his own abilities, perhaps she could bypass the wall and access them herself. Eyes shut closed, she strained to push further—stress lines forming on her forehead as she concentrated with everything that she had. They had little time, as he would feel her energy pouring from her hand, drawing his power from him from the recesses of his mind.

“Shatter!”

A firm whisper escaped her lips above the cold winter wind. In a blink of an eye the crystal burst into a small explosion leaving the shattered shards on the ground twinkling in the light. Her legs immediately grew weak as she stumbled from the withdrawal. Teeth gritted, she still wasn’t accustomed to it. She panted for air as she tried to steady herself.

“We need to get out of here now.”

The shadowed creature was quickly approaching them as she forced herself to compose.

He grunted as she pulled something from him, his energy flowing through his arm and into her, culminating the crescendo.

Shatter, he heard her say, followed by a burst that left him feeling as if he were winded. The sound of the crystal fragments falling to the earth with a musical cadence followed soon after.

Then, just as suddenly, it was all back. Everything, from the sound behind the sound of the breeze in the stockyard, the earth beneath the earth below them, the noise between the chirps of the birds nesting in a tree nearby, everything. The shattering of the crystal had severed whatever hold he'd had on John's magic.

"We're not going anywhere," John growled, feeling his skin flush with anger as he helped Lux to sit. "Stay here."

He stepped out into the yard as the figure approached, now with something else that glittered in the sunlight grasped in his fist. The wicked-looking blade measured about eight inches in length, and it wasn't clean. John had a sickening feeling that he knew whose blood was on it.

"Hey," he shouted across the yard, his feet planted firmly apart. "Lose something?"

The figure halted for a second, head cocked to one side, as if deciding whether or not to pursue.

Hot, John thought, feeling his ring thrum with power as his frustration and fury pulsed through him. Instantly, his magic responded, enhanced by Lux's mere presence. The blade in the man's hand grew dully pink, then almost white-red in an instant. He heard a yell as he dropped it, and then began to back off, clutching his burned fist.

"Stop," John intoned, feeling the wind pick up around him. A side effect of extensive fire use was often a drawing-in of other elements as well, and it seemed as if air, the natural complement, wouldn't be denied. Flames roared into life and spread in a broad crescent, like gasoline catching fire, behind the figure, cutting off his retreat. John half-growled, half-cursed and they roared in height, easily matching the figure's own stature.

"John Irvine," the figure called out. "My my, aren't we the powerful witch?"

"Come here and I'll show you how powerful I am," John replied, still advancing. He reach out to the air and pulled it to him, fanning the flame wall he'd created. The figure reached down, picking up one of the larger shards of the crystal.

"Another time," he promised. "Tell your mother and father I said hello," John was close enough to make out some details of his face beneath the shroud of his hood. A long scar ran up either side of his mouth in a terrifying rictus, but his eyes remained in darkness. Without warning, he plunged the shard of glass into his own arm, glancing backwards as a small hole appeared in the fire wall.

Without a moment's hesitation, and before John could close it again, he jumped through.

If there was one thing Lux Warren hated more than being weak, it was being weak in front of John. She had spent years developing her gifts and yet they still drained her. Although frustrated by the fact that she still succumbed to her dizzy spells, Lux allowed him to help steady her. What else was she supposed to do? She had no choice but to accept him help as her weight had fallen against him. Feeling the concrete floor beneath her, a hand would brace itself against one of the crates. She barely registered the cold steel since her porcelain skin was flushed with heat.

Swallowing back a dry lump in her throat, she tried to grab his arm before he went charging off. Her outstretched fingers grabbed air as it fell back down. With her neck rolling back, head leaned against the crate; she had no choice but to wait. It would have been suicide for her to go rushing in after expending the energy she just had. If only she wasn’t stuck there she could maybe do something to help him.

Through the corner of her emerald hues, the petite brunette would catch glimpses of the two figures standing in the open space. She couldn’t make out the hooded figure very well as John was blocking her vision. Despite her lack of view, she couldn’t help but feel a familiar connection to something. Puzzled, her eyebrows would knit together as the sounds of the conversation drifted towards her.

She couldn’t just watch. Stubbornly she placed all her concentration on John, allowing their previous link to facilitate her needs. With what energy she had left, one hand firmly grasping both crystals, Lux would amply his own spells. The clatter of the sword met her ears as she tried to force herself to stand on shaken legs. The flames licked at her senses as the smoke was carried down wind.

He was powerful, that much she could tell. Confidence reeked from every pore as Lux futilely stood by watching. What good was her powers if she hadn’t fully adapted to them? Deep down she knew she was being hard on herself, but now was not the time to become weak. Without warning and a quick goodbye, the mystery man disappeared into the flames after stabbing himself with the crystal.

“John…”

She fought off the darkness as she refused to let her body collapse out from under her. Unconsciously her teeth would sink into her lower lip as she used the hand on the crate for balance.

“Who the hell was that?”

Whoever it was, they would have to tell the others. There was someone out there and that someone knew their names and their family’s—at least they knew John’s. The wheels in her head were turning as she tried to force the accusatory tone out of her voice and mask it with the confusion she was also feeling.

“Do you know him?”

He glared as the form of the would-be-assassin retreated, throwing his hand out in frustration to extinguish the fire in front of him. As if it had never been there in the first place, it sucked into nothingness, the only trace being a darkened ring on the tarmac where the heat had fused it together.

He glanced over at Lux, who was clearly having trouble staying on her feet, but his blood was up. The magic, his family's legacy, was fire in his veins as much as it was in reality, his choler risen at the whole affair. Not only had he dared to attack him, he'd taken away his magic.

HIS MAGIC.

His glare transferred to her as the ring began to glow hot on his hand, as the mention of his name pulled his focus.

"Don't ever do that again," he snarled, the chill in his voice evident despite the heat of his fury. With a deep breath, he began to ground himself the way that he'd learned in those first days, the way he'd been taught before anything else.

"I don't know him," he said finally. "But he sure as hell seemed to know me. And my folks."

Happy birthday, he thought mirthlessly.

"There was something weird about him," he muttered, more to himself than Lux, as his anger began to abate, the magic relinquishing its hold on him. Vaguely, he thought about the severity of his reaction, the naked belligerence and aggression. Perhaps it was Lux.

Memories came unbidden of a sky filled with stars...

He clamped down on them.

"It wasn't that he didn't have power without the crystal. It was like... I don't know. There was a hole." He glanced at her. "We should get out of here."

A rather unladylike growl escaped her lips as emerald hues narrowed in his direction. He had the audacity to raise his voice at her when she might very well have saved both their lives? Some gratitude! Despite her tired limbs, Lux Warren had managed to find what strength she could to lash it back at him.

“Excuse me? If it weren’t for me, you could be dead right now! I think I deserve some appreciation here!”

Venom seeped from her lips as she ignored his growing tension. The air around them was sizzling with untapped energy. Mentally shaking her head she tried to wade off the dizziness bound to set in. While she hadn’t intended on revealing that particular ability to John, she had no choice. She might have run off to Boston, but she hadn’t run away from her path.

“Well it looks like we’re going nowhere fast then.”

She couldn’t shake the feeling of annoyance off, her ridged demeanor wasn’t the only clue to the fuming giant beside her. On unsteady feet, she forced herself to stand without any help using the crate to balance herself. Steady breaths would follow as her line of sight fell to the gravel beneath her feet. The petite brunette listened with a half ear, she couldn’t think straight for the moment. Long lashes fluttered closed momentarily as she composed herself, forcing herself to relax every muscle in her body.

“You’re right, we should go before someone decides to check out what all the noise was about.”

The last thing she ever wanted was to admit any weakness or to even reveal one in front of him.
