If there was one thing Lux Warren hated more than being weak, it was being weak in front of John. She had spent years developing her gifts and yet they still drained her. Although frustrated by the fact that she still succumbed to her dizzy spells, Lux allowed him to help steady her. What else was she supposed to do? She had no choice but to accept him help as her weight had fallen against him. Feeling the concrete floor beneath her, a hand would brace itself against one of the crates. She barely registered the cold steel since her porcelain skin was flushed with heat.

Swallowing back a dry lump in her throat, she tried to grab his arm before he went charging off. Her outstretched fingers grabbed air as it fell back down. With her neck rolling back, head leaned against the crate; she had no choice but to wait. It would have been suicide for her to go rushing in after expending the energy she just had. If only she wasn’t stuck there she could maybe do something to help him.

Through the corner of her emerald hues, the petite brunette would catch glimpses of the two figures standing in the open space. She couldn’t make out the hooded figure very well as John was blocking her vision. Despite her lack of view, she couldn’t help but feel a familiar connection to something. Puzzled, her eyebrows would knit together as the sounds of the conversation drifted towards her.

She couldn’t just watch. Stubbornly she placed all her concentration on John, allowing their previous link to facilitate her needs. With what energy she had left, one hand firmly grasping both crystals, Lux would amply his own spells. The clatter of the sword met her ears as she tried to force herself to stand on shaken legs. The flames licked at her senses as the smoke was carried down wind.

He was powerful, that much she could tell. Confidence reeked from every pore as Lux futilely stood by watching. What good was her powers if she hadn’t fully adapted to them? Deep down she knew she was being hard on herself, but now was not the time to become weak. Without warning and a quick goodbye, the mystery man disappeared into the flames after stabbing himself with the crystal.

“John…”

She fought off the darkness as she refused to let her body collapse out from under her. Unconsciously her teeth would sink into her lower lip as she used the hand on the crate for balance.

“Who the hell was that?”

Whoever it was, they would have to tell the others. There was someone out there and that someone knew their names and their family’s—at least they knew John’s. The wheels in her head were turning as she tried to force the accusatory tone out of her voice and mask it with the confusion she was also feeling.

“Do you know him?”
