the merry-go-round never stops
Date: September 8, 2012
Time: 5:13 p.m.
Location: Crescent Cove; the docks
Characters: Elliot Ashford, Ezra Winters, Evelyn Summers
Description: Elliot returns to town, yet immediately escapes the grounds of his family home by returning to the docks he loved as a teenager. There, two individuals stumble upon him, finding they have more in common that what the common eye can see.
Status: Private, Complete

Crescent Cove seemingly had a different air to it than what he had left behind those years ago. He had feared that stepping back into the town would flood him with the emotions that he’d felt at leaving, that the familiar terrors that had haunted him night after night following his departure would be waiting for him at the city limits sign. Instead, the young scholar felt an empty hollow in the pit of his stomach, a subtle yearning for something more than the indifference that was settling within at each intake of his breath. “Home” had never lived up to that name, but now it seemed as if he had less of a connection there; as if the ache in the pit of his stomach was giving both satisfaction of having made it out alive, yet also steadily resonating a warning. The town wasn’t the same as he’d left it; he wasn’t sure he was prepared for what he’d find.

The decision to come back hadn’t been an easy one for him to make. In fact, it had been less of his decision than he’d like to admit – it had taken a phone call announcing both his grandfather’s death and his mother’s disappearance that had spurred him into action. He’d taken only a day to himself, consulting with his lead professor and getting his thesis work in order before he took off. The concern of returning that built up inside him on the way back had only worked at his nerves, making the brunet more jittery than normal. He hadn’t honestly ever wanted to come back, but something told him that leaving again wasn’t going to be an easy task.

He’d returned to his family’s estate to find it as empty as the hollow in his belly. With his father out and his mother missing, he’d half-expected to find his grandfather’s body resting in the spot he’d passed. Thankfully the clean-up crew hadn’t left any evidence of the supposedly bloody demise his grandfather had befall him; there was a lot Elliot was prepared for, but stumbling upon that was far from what he’d be willing to take.

It hadn’t taken him long to grow restless of the ghostly chill that accompanied his time within those halls; he’d quickly deposited his belongings in his old quarters, leaving the wing he’d often been left to as a child just as fast as he could. Besides, the day was just the right degree of chilly, with the wind barely a breeze; he had always felt more at home in the vast outdoors than locked up in mostly abandoned nooks and crannies that his family’s estate had tucked away inside. The docks had been a frequent visited spot during his youth, and for right now, the gentle motion of the breeze along the water-top brought a calm to him that he’d been lacking since even before that phone call.

“I should have known that being here wasn’t going to be easy.”

Ezra, in the last few months, had really found his bearings, things had been improving at home, and he had become considerably less of a basket case. He was incredibly grateful for the friends he had made, and for foster parents who were great. Part of his happiness stemmed from getting a car, and being allowed to screw off whenever he wanted. His latest frequent was the docks at crescent cove while the boaters were all at sea. The docks provided a quiet solace for his busy mind, and provided a secluded enough area that he could do a little magic without having to worry about being caught.

His legs dangled off the docks, inches above the cold water as he looked at the sea. He felt warm enough in his ribbed turtleneck sweater, even though the cold wind seemed to blow right through his body. He liked the cold, though, he just didn't like catching a cold. He practiced changing his eye color as he sat there, and enjoyed the calm ocean sounds, and sea birds squawking. He felt a connection to the water, a soothing connection.

It was two days after Eve found her father’s body; she was still having issues dealing with his death and couldn’t see herself moving on from it. Someone or something had tracked him down and killed him violently. Eve was sitting on the docks looking down at the water trying to sort things out. What could have possibly came after him and why him? He was such a kind man and had no enemies.

The messes in the house made her think that it was something magical that came after her father, but why? He always used magic with caution so he surely didn’t do it himself. Also the agony on his face didn’t make sense. The only option was something had killed him, something with magic. Recently Eve started meeting more and more witches, so maybe it was a witch gone sour, the very thing her entire family feared. But who could it have been? Eve didn’t know.

Eve decided to come down to the docks to get away from her mom. At the moment her mother was falling apart at the loss of her husband and Eve couldn’t stand to see her in so much pain when she was trying to deal with it too. So Eve wondered down to the dock, she usually could find a peaceful place. This was also the place her father would take her to give her life lessons on magic. The thought choked Eve up a bit and tears flow down her cheeks. The waterworks never seemed to end for the past two days.

The breeze brought with it a melodic tone of a gull’s song as it ruffled the brunet locks spiked atop the boy’s head. Brown irises hid behind lids as he listed to the far-off calls of the birds above, the crashing of the tiny, rippling waves along the shore lulling him to a security he could only hope he’d carry away from the area. When he’d first arrived, he hadn’t paid much attention to his surroundings; instead, he favored ignoring the few guests that the docks had littered here and there.

There wasn’t much that could pull his attention away from the serenity of the water, but the quiet, choked sob perked his ears as it reached him. With a tilt of his brow, an eye slid open, head lulling to the side in the direction of the young girl not too far away. She wasn’t outright crying, but the initial catch of her throat had been gently carried, pulling him from his thoughts. He watched the girl quietly gazing out from the docks, and was about to turn away before it clicked. He knew this girl.

The name came faster to him than he’d imagined it would. Evelyn. He hadn’t ever been formally introduced to the girl, but he knew about her family. His grandfather had been the one to share with him the secrets of the families that had gathered within Crescent Cove long ago, told him stories of how some families kept to themselves and sheltered their young to keep them away from the temptation that came with the magic running through their veins. He was certain that he’d only ever seen the girl once or twice long ago, with a youthful Lux at his side – they’d been racing through the park as adolescents when they’d witnessed the young girl with her parents.

Turning his attention back to the sky above, he noticed he wasn’t as alone as he’d originally thought – not too far away sat another individual, a younger looking male who looked oddly concentrated on the water’s surface. There was something about the male that tugged at the Ashford’s mind, his brow furrowing in frustration before he realized the real reason the boy seemed so concentrated. His grandfather had taught him long ago how to recognize those with similar blood within their veins, and the charged air around the boy could easily be read with a trained eye.

Eve fiddled with the sleeve of her jacket as she watched the ripples in the water. Her tears slid down her cheeks and joined the water below showing no sign of their existence in the greater current of the water’s ripples. Eve finally decided it was time to go for a little walk. She needed something to do. Eve wiped the tears away from face, only her red puffy eyes showed that she was crying and climbed to her feet. She took one last glance at the water watching the waves and her eyes started to water up again. Eve pulled her jacket’s hood up over her and went to walk away from the dock, ignoring everything around her. Tears filled her eyes obscuring her view and before she knew it she had bumped into someone.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Eve said looking up to who she had run into. He had brunette hair and matching brown eyes but Eve didn’t stare for long. She wiped away the tears once again and mumbled “I was distracted… wasn’t watching…” Eve trailed off uncertain of how to explain what happened. “I’m sorry” she finished off and went to walk away again.

His bones cracked as his lithe body sat up, legs pulling to his chest in an attempt to stretch before he put pressure on the soles of his feet, his gangly body coming to a full stand afterward. For the moment, his eyes were still trained on the unknown boy with his back turned towards him; it was one thing to have a relatively-known witch crying on the dock next to his own, but having another that he didn’t know of only a few feet away from him made Elliot uncomfortable. He hadn’t ever met Eve face-to-face, but she wasn’t out there practicing magic in the open; the stranger that was could mean bad news.

He figured he’d have to face the estate sometime; it might as well start as soon as he could get it over with. He’d tried his father’s cell before he made it down to the docks, yet so far he’d received no call back. He was hoping he’d run into the older man before facing the empty estate alone again; those halls were not as warm and welcoming as he’d recalled them being in his youth.

Truth be told, he hadn’t been paying much attention as he made his way off of the docks. The collision with the crying lady almost knocked Elliot off of his feet, but he steadied both himself and the girl with his long digits gripping lightly on her shoulders. Once they were steady, a polite smile pulled itself up on his lips, eyes crinkling in generosity as he spoke.

“Don’t worry about it,” his voice was soft, though had a bit of a teasing tone to it. “I hear mowing people down is the best way to meet.” He attempted a laugh, but the tears still on the girl’s cheeks gave him more pause than he’d anticipated. To his knowledge, people didn’t go around crying for nothing – he’d just lost his grandfather, and he wasn’t out here sobbing. But then again, he hadn’t exactly been very close with his family over the course of recent years.

Ezra was in his own little world, or rather was until the moment the collision happened. He heard the heavy steps and the scuffle of shoes, and it pulled him out of the tranquility of the sea, that he was rather enjoying. The salty air had a bite to it as he inhaled sharply. His heart began pumping as he began to ponder fight or flight. Forget the red eyes he had glamoured his own ocean blue eyes into, it never even crossed his mind.

He blindly reached for his blue and white hoodie and quickly threw it on, making sure to mask his face and especially eyes. He jumped up rather abruptly and looked at the water and wondered if that would be the best way to escape what could possibly turn into a bad situation. "Oh...uhhh...Don't mind me. I'm just...looking for buried treasure." He said stupidly, in just as stupid of a pirate voice. Shit. Shit! SHIT! Ezra did not perform great under pressure, prime example right there. "Aarrrrgh." He added for effect as he looked down at the wooden dock, and started walking their way on the other side of the walkway. Just look down. Don't look up...You'll be fine.

Eve was on her way of trying to get as far away as possible but the man’s comment made her stop. He didn’t seem upset or angry that she had just walked into her. Instead he tried to turn it into a joke. Eve paused and looked over at the man finally taking in his features. It wasn’t a face she recognized but she could sense something. This is what made her stay, she ignored the couple of tears that ran down her face and gave him a weak smile at his joke.

“I’m really sorry.” Eve replied fidgeting with her coat’s sleeve again. She was a little nervous about the conversation. “I just wasn’t paying attention…” she trailed off and then caught a familiar voice. She looked around and saw a small figured walking away trying to hide his face. However Eve quickly noticed who it was. It was the boy she met not too long ago. The same one she just met at The Coffee Shope last week.

“Ezra?” Eve questions him wondering what he was doing and why he was trying to hide his face. Not only was one of her friends here to see her crying but there was also a stranger. Eve started to feel a little awkward. She hated to let people see her cry. Not because it make her appear weak or anything but because Eve didn’t want people to see her in pain.

Elliot easily picked up on the hesitance of the brunette to let him see her cry. He understood; no explanation was necessary. He refused to let tears overtake him in public, or anywhere that others could even accidentally take notice. Doing so could be seen as a weakness, a way in to manipulate others – if you can see them at their weakest, it wouldn’t take much to rip them back down to that point later on because it was possible to get there to begin with. When Eve spoke, Elliot nodded along, letting a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders roll through.

“Happens to the best of us. I feel a little obligated to ask if you’re alright, though I can see that you’re rather.. well, not.” He cringed at his own words, unable to hold back the obvious. Way to go, dickweed. You’ve just made an uncomfortable situation worse.

He opened his mouth to apologize, but lips quickly shut together as another individual broke the silence. The boy who hadn’t been too far off had made his way over, attempting to slip by unnoticed; it was Eve who had called out his name, and Elliot was thankful that he now knew just who was toying with magic in public. One of his grandfather’s old lectures started monotonously playing in his skull, and a quick roll of his eyes dismissed that joyride before it could finish.

“Ezra? I know I’ve been gone for a while, but that name is certainly not one that’s been here for long.” He wasn’t trying to be harsh, but coming from his own family, there wasn’t many people that Elliot didn’t at least know of. The Ashford’s typically made it their business to know as many people as they could in the town, especially if they were tied to the craft.

Ezra had never seen in any other state than happy, and he didn't even recognize her with the hoodie over her face like that, and he had no clue who the other guy was, but he knew Eve so he quietly talked himself out of being a nutjob, for that particular moment. He walked across the space of the docks that separated them awkwardly. He walked up to her, and basically bumrushed her with a bear hug, and held her tightly for a moment. He hoped that what little happiness that he had within him might make her feel better. That was how the magic of hugs worked.

Ezra continued to not make eye contact with the stranger though, as his eyes were still red, and he wasn't about to take a chance on that. He practiced magic at the docks because it was the best place he had found that was regularly deserted during the day, until the fishermen and boaters came in, anyway. Sometimes he helped them dock or carry their haul, and managed to score fish, shrimp, and sometimes even lobster. Today, would not be one of those days because he had something to do that was way more important. His job was to be there for his friend, and try to comfort her during whatever was making her sad. Maybe he could make her some muffins.

Ezra kept his head lowered so that his hoodie blocked his eyes from the stranger. "I'm new here." He responded quietly. Meeting new people was hard for him. It took him quite a while to get comfortable with Eve, and she was one of the most positive and friendly people he had ever met.

He leaned in towards Eve, and whispered in her ear. "I can't get my eyes to change back. I glamoured them red, and I can't get them to change back." He said, clearly indicating that was why he was hiding his face.

Before Eve knew how to react, Ezra came to the rescue with an embracing hug. For the first time in days, Eve had a huge smile on her tear stained face. She hugged Ezra back and started to feel a little better but she knew it would only be temporary. The loss of her father was too great, but for now Eve was going to appreciate the moment.

“He’s a foster kid.” Eve said to the stranger adding onto what Ezra said when he mentioned he hadn’t heard of his name before. When Ezra whispered to her that he could change his eyes back, Eve gave him a weak laugh and looked at his face. Indeed his eyes were not their natural color but instead he had red eyes making him seem almost demonic. She gave him credit for going with such a bold color. When she was trying the spell Eve always went with the simpler eye colors like different shades of blue, green and hazel. “Ezra, just do what you did to change them red. But this time, try to make them your original eye color.” Eve whispered back not caring if the stranger overheard. After meeting so many new witches recently, Eve was able to sense when one was nearby and this guy was a witch as well.

Once Eve was certain Ezra got his eye color back to normal, she returned her focus to the person she had bumped into not too long ago. “Sorry,” Eve said again certain the man was probably tired of hearing it but she truly was sorry. “I’ve just had a rough few days.”

A thin brow lifted as the interactions between the two friends played out before him; Ezra latched onto Eve with the coordination of a twelve-year-old, which spurred the curiosity within Elliot concerning just how old the younger male actually was. If he was practicing magic so openly in public, he’d certainly have to be brave, not to mention confident enough in his abilities; but for now, the youth’s head continued being turned towards the ground, eye contact seemingly unimportant. The young scientist had to hold back an internal groan; that was one of his biggest pet peeves.

Elliot hadn’t heard the reasoned whisper into Eve’s ear, but her response told him just enough; the boy had been glamouring his eyes, and now were perhaps more stuck than the youth wanted. Great, a plucky beginner.. If he wasn’t that experienced, he shouldn’t have been toying around out in public. But then, what concern was it to Elliot? Deciding it wasn’t, he couldn’t hold back the joyous chuckle that came from hearing Eve instruct Ezra.

“I hear Clear Eyes works just as well; I’d stay away from the generic stuff, though.” Turning his attention to the long fingers extending from his hands, the brunet flicked off imaginary lint from the edge of one of his nails. These two were more interesting than going back home; at least for now.

“No need to apologize. We haven’t properly met, but uh, I’m Elliot Ashford.” He just hoped the first response wasn’t about his grandfather’s recent death, or the rumors about how it was his mom that went psycho-killer before throwing up metaphorical deuces and disappearing. “My family knows of yours, so I guess the foster system did a better job of hiding a witch than our own families did.”

Ezra lifted his head slowly to reveal a pair of blue eyes that resembled an icy glacier made of cerulean and teal ice. They were his only striking feature, and according to his foster parents, he was the only one in the family to possess eyes that color, much less anyone else they had ever seen. Even through the beauty of them, they had a certain coldness that permeated through even his warmest of smiles. Ezra blinked his eyes, and his long black lashes batted against his skin. He did that until he was satisfied that his eyes were working normally again. "Thanks Eve." He responded quietly, but with a smile. Truth be told, he was a little uncomfortable being known as 'the foster kid', but it was certainly loads better than being identified as 'that kid who threw up on everyone once'.

"I'll...uh...keep that in mind." He said, wondering what the hell that meant. "The foster system does a great job of screwing up a lot of things as well." The bitterness dripped from his voice like venom dripping from the fang of a viper, waiting for the proper moment to strike at anything that crossed its path. He had issues with the foster system, and while he didn't mean to be rude, it probably came off that way to someone who didn't understand the system.

"I'm Ezra." He said as he didn't hold a hand out to shake. He wasn't sure if he liked this Elliot. If he knew anything about the town, he would have heard of the Ashfords, but he didn't really care about the town. You've seen one town, you've seen them all. Why bother to learn anything when you're likely to have to move later anyway. Why even bother to make friends? It was like creating a difficult situation for yourself. Get attached to someone so that when you have to leave, it just makes it that much more miserable, because you know deep down that you'll never see them again. His mind reeled as he spaced out and subdued to the dark thoughts inside his mind momentarily.

He snapped back into focus, and rubbed Eve on the shoulder. "So, maybe you want to talk about why you are upset?" Ezra's eyes crinkled with concern, and he hoped it wasn't anything too serious. She really was a gem of a person, and he hated to see her upset like this.

Ashford was a name Eve have heard of but with her family keeping her isolated from other witch families it wasn’t a name she associated with magic, that was until now. Eve assumed that he was part of another witch family. She was a bit amazed at first that he knew who she was but thinking back to her conversation with her father last week, Eve wasn’t surprised. Her father, Jason Summers, even said he knew of the other witch families but chose to keep her isolated from them. However thinking back to that day only made fresh tears roll down her face.

Eve didn’t join in introducing herself when Ezra and Elliot did, Eve knew Ezra knew her and by how the conversation was going Eve assumed that Elliot knew who she was too. Eve fiddled with her jacket’s sleeve once again as Ezra asked her what was wrong. She knew saying it out loud would cause her to break down again. However she could see the concern on Ezra’s face and really appreciated it. However she kind of felt bad for Elliot who seemed like he walked into a cry baby.

“I went to visit my dad a few days ago…” Eve trailed off wanting to bury her face into something but withheld. She took a deep breath trying to force the tears not to fall anymore but failing to do so. “It was a mess Ezra… Blood was everywhere… He was murdered… stabbed… and bleed to death.” At the last few words Eve fell apart and burst into tears again. She buried her face into the sleeves of her jacket to soak up the tears rushing out.

It didn’t take too long for the fresh witch to hone his craft, fixing the unseen red eyes to the steel, cold blue of what Elliot was guessing normal for the witch. Glamouring hadn’t ever been something he’d tampered with, other than the few lessons he’d received when training; he’d never wanted to change any aspect of his appearance, though he could understand why others might leap at the chance to. Glamouring was a step in the right direction for training though, so Elliot had to give a silent, non-physical pat-on-the-back to the youth. Kudos?

The fact that Ezra introduced himself without following polite procedure didn’t strike Elliot as unusual or odd; the attitude resonating within the boy already spoke enough about him to do away with any preconceived notions of introductory mannerisms. He brought his own hands down from examination, golden brown hues rolling in his sockets minutely before he even bothered listening in on the rest of the conversation in front of him. It was evident that the two others knew each other well enough to open up to one another, and Elliot wasn’t sure he wanted to stick around for the flood-banks to burst open more than they had already.

As it turned out, he wasn’t going to get the choice to tuck tail and run before the inevitable happened; Eve spoke about her dad’s murder and with it came the tears. Elliot swallowed hard, his throat feeling dry and constricted. Was Crescent Cove turning itself into a primetime soap opera, with all of its inhabitants being picked off one-by-one? Or was there something bigger than that going on?

“Uh, not to interrupt on this obviously emotional moment, but… murdered? That seems to be a little extreme. And possibly recurrent.” Nervously taking his bottom lip in-between a set of pearly whites, he hesitated a moment before sharing, “that’s why I’m back. Apparently someone offed my Gramps a few days ago.”

Ezra tried to contain the gasp that escaped his lips, but it made its way out anyway. He was only in shock for a moment before he moved to be closer to her. He placed a supportive hand on her back, and rubbed gently. Truth be told, he had no idea what to say. How awful it must have been to have parents and then lose them. He just never had them, or rather didn't know them. His ongoing emotional pain was nothing compared to the intensity of her current pain, and none of his pain could likely compare.

Ezra didn't mean to be rude, he just got nervous around new people, and Elliot was a new person. He listened to Elliot's situation too, and immediately felt bad for him, and perhaps Ezra's problems weren't so bad. "So both of you have family members who have been..." Ezra coughed, unsure what to say to them. His thoughts immediately went to his foster parents. What if they were next? Hie eyes widened with fear, as he started frantically grabbing his cell phone. The three of them were witches, and Ezra hadn't had a death in his family yet. Was it a serial killer?

It took a few minutes for Eve to compose herself. She managed to hold back the tears and wiped off the remaining ones on her face with her sleeve. Eve looked up at Elliot sorry not only for making him uncomfortable with her losing it in the middle of public but also for his loss as well. However it didn’t make sense. Two witch families, each with a recent murder. Something was happening and Eve was starting to fear that they might be next.

“Your grandpa was murdered?” Eve asked him. “But... what if the same person killed them both?” Eve finally voiced one of her questions out loud. She looked at both Ezra and Elliot. She definitely didn’t want anything to happen to Ezra. He just found out he was a witch and was still learning his powers. There would be no way he would be able to protect himself against whatever was killing witches. Also Ezra was proving to be a great friend, someone Eve didn’t want to lose. Then Elliot, yes she had just met him but he did seem like a nice guy and Eve would hate to hear of anything happening to him. Then she finally thought of herself. Yes, Eve had have practice of magic all of her life, but her teaching was always the simple stuff. There was no way she could protect herself against an attack.

Who was the culprit in these murders? It couldn’t have been any normal person. Eve was certain her father would have been able to protect himself from a burglar or any normal killer. No, it had to be someone magical, another witch maybe? Or maybe it was what her family had feared their entire lives, demons.

“You don’t think it was demons?” Eve asked Elliot. Eve started to shake at the thought. She didn’t know much about demons but her family’s book of shadows had many writings in it about them. They seemed like foul creatures that became from witches turning bad. “I went to my dad’s house…. He was stabbed and blood was everywhere… It wasn’t a normal stabbing… It had to have been done by magic.”

Eve’s question brought a morbid laugh to slip past Elliot’s lips; however, it was a valid question. He wanted to respond with, I’m not sure; did my mother kill your dad too?, though he didn’t want to put any more stock into the belief that his mom had gone bananas. He didn’t actually believe the rumors himself, but some people who hadn’t known the Ashford’s very well – or on the contrary, a little too well – could continue fueling that belief.

“The same person could have, but I don’t see the connection between them. Usually there’s a connecting motive between victims, and other than the fact of them being older and witches, I don’t know why they’d be targeted.” Except for, as Eve spoke of, demons.

If a demon was in Crescent Cove, Elliot certainly had picked the worst possible time to return. Sure, he’d kept practicing while away – probably more often than not, it was his go-to when he wasn’t cooped up in the library studying – but he wasn’t going to be able to handle a demon that his grandfather hadn’t been able to. Maybe it’s better if Ma was the one. Wait, really, Elliot? He turned away from Eve and Ezra for a moment, long fingers running wildly through his hair twice before he turned back.

“This isn’t a good sign. If it was a demon, there’s just more death making its way to town.”

Ezra stopped trying to fidget with his phone for the moment. "Demons?!" He exclaimed, his voice nearly a shriek, echoed off of the cliffs that surrounded the docks on both side. In normal circumstances, he wouldn't have even believed it could be possible, but now? Oh, absolutely. This was something he couldn't really handle yet. How can this be true?! So now I have to worry about serial killing demons? Aren't human serial killers bad enough?! "Ok. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Ok." He said to nobody in particular, as he tried to calm himself.

"Ok. Ezra, you are a witch. You have magic, and you could easily kill a demon. No problem." He would be delusional if he actually thought he could take care of a demon, and knew about them. He didn't know about what they could do, and therefore that made him ignorant, not delusional.

Ezra looked at them and smiled. "Nothing to worry about, right? We can just magic it to death." He hugged Eve again, and clearly thought that was the end of it. Then, it occurred to him. If Eve is worried, then maybe it isn't that simple. Maybe there is more to this... He thought to himself before looking to Eve and Elliot for some sort of idea.

Eve bit her lip as she watched both Ezra’s and Elliot’s reaction to her suspicions. When it came to killing a witch there wasn’t many who could easily kill one. How her father was murdered only gave evidence that it had to be someone magical. Elliot was right though, if it was in fact demons then more deaths were bound to be following. Eve hugged Ezra back uncertain of what he should do. Ezra didn’t have the skills to defend him against a demon and there wasn’t much Eve could do for him. Eve didn’t really want to answer Ezra’s question.

“It’ll be okay Ezra. We’ll be fine if it’s demons…” Eve trailed off and then looked over to Elliot. She had no idea what to do to prepare for a demon fight. She gave Elliot a questioning look but didn’t say anything. She didn’t want Ezra to worry more than he was. However Eve couldn’t keep every evil magical thing away from Ezra. For now she would try. “We should probably let everyone else know…” Eve added thinking right away of Isabelle. Isabelle has been more than helpful to both Eve and Ezra, surely she would know what to make of these deaths. Maybe Eve was over reacting. After all her entire life she was taught to fear demons and other badies with magic, she could just be overreacting.

The beginning of the journey Ezra was on had him closer to the starting point than Elliot had originally realized; if the younger male didn’t know about demons, it could put him at a greater risk than simply practicing magic outdoors would. The impeding freak-out was a well understood reaction – Elliot had the benefit of finding out about demons when he was younger, through ghost stories and haunting tales around campfires as he grew up. He’d had quite a while to get used to the idea of demons, and thankfully he’d only had to keep his encounters with them countable on one hand; as in, he’d never actually been in the company of one.

He stood silently as Eve comforted her friend, listening to her attempt at soothing and biting his bottom lip. No, if it’s a demon, I feel like we’ll be the farthest from fine we could possibly be. Rocking back on the heels of his feet, he brought up a hand to rub incessantly at his eyes, sighing as he gripped hold of the bridge of his nose. “Uh, I don’t want to scare you, but if it’s demons, I don’t think ‘fine’ is the right choice word. You’re right; we do need to tell others.”

Just who ‘others’ were in terms for Eve, Elliot didn’t know. He at least knew of a couple he could tell, but the Ashford hadn’t been in Crescent Cove for so long, he didn’t know who was present anymore. He’d need to get in touch with Lux and John, or his father – they were probably going to be his best bet.

“I have friends that I should tell. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Eve,” he started, dropping his hand from his face to let it rest by his side. “You probably shouldn’t be staying at your home if it could be a demon. I doubt any of us are strong enough on our own to make running away a possible solution.”

Ezra was still very much out of this loop. He didn't have a magical upbringing, and didn't have a regular upbringing. The truth was that he did come from a long prominent line of witches. The Winters family of witches at one time had been very powerful, and very respected, before they were lost in the annuls of time. Now their family name was merely a sliver of nothing. He looked at Elliot questioningly. "We have magic." He reminded them as he gauged their reactions.

Ezra wondered who he should tell. "Should I tell my foster parents? Not like they could to much, but if they are targeting the parents of witches, then I should at least warn them?" He asked curiously. "I could probably get transferred to another home if I needed to.." He mused, trying to keep Cassi and Dean from harm.

Eve frowned when Elliot brought up they were far from being fine. Yes, she knew this was true but she didn’t want to admit it, especially with Ezra there. However Elliot was right they shouldn’t be acting like everything was sunshine and butterflies when demons were coming. When Elliot said he had friends he could tell Eve added onto it.

“I can let Isabelle know. I do have John’s number.” Eve said thinking back to when they met at the coffee shop. Since then her and John hadn’t talked much but Eve had gotten much closer to Isabelle. Eve was also certain that Isabelle could inform the rest. “Isabelle probably knows a lot of witches in Crescent Cove. If I let her know she could pass the message onto everyone else…” Eve trailed off not sure who all Elliot knew. For all she knew those could be the friends he was referring to. After all Eve had just met these witches not too long ago.

Elliot was right about not staying alone. Eve lived by herself in a big house; it wasn’t an idea situation when creatures were thirsty for her blood. After all whatever killed her father waited until he was alone. However Ezra leaving probably wasn’t a good idea. He needed to stay but she didn’t think it was right to tell his foster parents about the situation if they knew nothing about witches and demons. It would more than likely make them think Ezra was going crazy.

“I don’t think it’s wise to tell them about this Ezra… after all they might not believe you if they don’t know anything about magic.” Eve said assuming that they didn’t. However she could be wrong but even so if Ezra went away that still didn’t guarantee his safety; no he would have to stay.

“What should we do?” Eve asked Elliot. She had no idea how to handle the situation. She was highly inexperienced and only knew horror stories of what demons were capable of. She thought of offering Ezra to come stay with her but even so the two of them were no match for whatever might be coming.

Elliot kicked at the dirt underneath his shoes, feeling a slight aggravation welling up within his veins. If demons really were in Crescent Cove, then he could use his grandfather’s sage advice – unfortunately, that option was no longer in the cards. He didn’t know what to think; the thoughts in his head were rapidly racing, names popping in and out just as if the breeze were carrying the names away.

“I can call John; he or Lux might know something. I .. don’t know Isabelle that well, so I’ll let that ball in your court.”

He turned around to face Ezra, a small frown accompanying his features. The young witch was new and maybe he didn’t know much, but if he was going to go on a whim and tell his foster family, that wasn’t the best move to make in his eyes.

“Not that there’s explicitly a rule book or anything, but… telling them could make things worse. A lot worse, especially since they don’t have magic for themselves.”

Ezra was absolutely clueless about these kinds of things. "I've got to do something. I can't let them get...whatever demons did. He tapped a foot nervously as he leaned against some of the docking. "What should I do? I want to help." He said nervously as he fiddled with his hands.

Ezra decided it was best that he stay quiet for the moment and let the two of them do whatever it was that they felt would be prudent given the situation. He sidled up to Eve and waited for the two of them to give him something to do to help.

Eve looked at Ezra as he tried to find something he could do. However he was just as powerless as Eve felt against the possible demons. The more Eve thought about their situation the more she was certain there was nothing her and Ezra could do at the time being. Maybe Elliot could do something, but Eve didn’t know him very well nor what was he capable of doing. No, all Eve could do was inform the others of the possible doom that had come.

“Ezra, for the time being I don’t think there’s anything we can.” Eve said to him knowing this wouldn’t make him feel any better about his foster parents. Eve could see that he really cared about them. “We’ll tell Isabelle and I’m certain she could think of what to do about your foster parents…” Eve trailed off thinking. His foster parents didn’t know about magic, maybe they would be safe from the demon so long as they didn’t infer. “Ezra, we’ll keep this away from them and maybe the demons won’t bother them since they don’t know what’s going on.” Eve knew this wasn’t this truth. She highly doubted demons would care, but there was still a possibility. If they stayed out of it they might be fine.

Eve returned her attention to Elliot. “Okay, you let John and Lux know… I’ll try to get ahold of Isabelle… Maybe we could meet up later with everyone else and see what we should do.” Eve said not sure what she should do in the meantime. Should she just go home and wait until everyone got together? Or should she try to find someone to stay with. Eve wasn’t sure.

"I think it's best to lay back for right now and not make our suspicions too known." Elliot sighed, biting his tongue after. If demons were afoot, it wouldn't be best to go looking for them. From what he had heard as a kid, demons made themselves known whenever it was convenient for them; it wouldn't do to go looking for trouble.

"I'll let them know. But, uh, first," he started, taking out his cell phone. He wiggled it in front of the two enthusiastically before continuing. "We should probably exchange numbers and then catch up later."

Sliding the bar to unlock his phone, he pulled up an app and began texting a generic message, waiting for the others to give their numbers. For the ones volunteered, he sent the message - consisting of his first and last name, and a dandy smiley - before pocketing the technology.

"I've got to run, but let's make sure to actually meet up. It's better to have at least a strategy prepared, just in case we do run into bigger and badder things."

With a small face, he turned his heel and was off as fast as the thoughts running through his head. What did Crescent Cove get itself into..?

Ezra calmed down quite a bit when Eve suggested that there might be something to be done. He wouldn't tell them, or anyone. He refused to put anyone in danger. She was pretty smart afterall. Ezra didn't know enough about Demons to know that they pretty much messed with whomever they pleased, whenever they pleased. He fidgeted as he listened to the two of them talk.

"Oh." He said as he pulled his phone out of his pocket and replied to the text he received with his cell number, email address, and facebook information. "It's good to meet you." He said quietly, and turned to Eve and hugged her. "It was great to see you again. Give me a call if you need anything."

Wait. Badder things?! Ezra remained quiet for the time being, and feigned a smile. He needed to get a journal so he could put this kind of stuff in it.

Eve had to agree with Elliot even though she hated just sitting back and wait to see what happens. Acting like everything was fine was something Eve didn’t want to do but it seemed to be her only option. She nodded at Elliot and then gave her phone number to him. They would have to keep in touch and a meeting with the others as soon as possible was a great idea. Eve was almost certain Isabelle would know what to do, or so Eve hoped so. Eve bid Elliot goodbye as he left the two of them

Eve returned the hug to Ezra and gave him a little nod. At the moment Eve just wanted to be alone, there wasn’t anything Ezra could do to help her but the offer was still generous of him.

“I will Ezra…” Eve trailed off knowing this was a good time to depart. “And Ezra you keep me up to date encase anything happens to you or your foster parents… I think we’ll be fine for now until we meet with the others.” Eve added knowing her statement wasn’t entirely true. If the demons wanted to attack them anytime soon there was nothing they could do and they definitely weren’t prepared for any attacks. “Take care Ezra” Eve said before she headed back to her car as she tried to figure out what the next few days were going to be like.
