Avalynn and Mikino
Outside the Arcane Royal Academy
Mid-Afternoon
Her presence does not go unnoticed
As a student she had loved spending her time in the library with books piled beside her, the lingering rays of a late afternoon sun filtering in through the high windows to warm her skin. She'd enjoyed the smell of wood and books. She'd enjoyed the whispered conversations and the sent of ink. She'd enjoyed the excitement that came from the promise of discovering something new. While she still enjoyed all of those things, being at the ARA no longer held the same magical quality it had when she was younger. Perhaps it was now too familiar. Had she lost the sensitivity to this particular environment? It was plausible, she supposed. Then again, perhaps she had simply learned all that she needed to here. There was plenty still she did not know, but there was no guarantee that she would acquire the knowledge here.
It was a thought she could expand on given the opportunity, but it wasn't to be. A collection of overly loud whispers drew her from her inner musings as a group of younger girls took up a vacant table near her own. Tidbits of gossip drifted easily across the short distance between them, feeding her growing irritation. It was ironic, really, for her to be so irritated with whispered rumors and wagging tongues. How often had she meticulously drawn tidbits of the truth from such things? Despite the distance between her own holdings and the Court proper it was not difficult to stay informed. Loose tongues were the curse of the bored and entitled, after all.
She had little interest at this moment, however, in the trivial interests of the young and, frankly, uninspiring. Her concentration had been broken and she was loathe to return to the topic of interest that had originally driven her to the familiar shelves of the ARA's library. She would have to request to have another time slot arranged to explore the possibility of magi skill directly related to animals. With little else to keep her seated, Avalynn stood in a single graceful movement, pausing briefly to smooth the fabric of her clothing before gathering her belongings.
Dressed in the deep purple of her house, her hair tied neatly back into an intricate braid, her appearance spoke of her presence there not simply as a member of the alumni but as also as a member of the nobility. She stood apart from those still seated at the table and the cold look she presented them with as she passed silenced their insistent chatter. She was under no illusion, however, that the silence would remain. No, it would disappear as the heavy wooden door of the library closed firmly behind her departing form. Though she could no longer hear them, she could imagine the immediate continuation of their dull conversation as the lock clicked shut.
Leaving the library behind, she continued on until she passed through the main doors of the academy. It was silly to miss the familiar halls of her own home, having only been gone from them a short time, yet still she yearned for them. The complexities of the Queen's court was what drew her, but it was also capable of driving her away. With suitors sparring for the Queen's hand, she was less interested to remain at court. Bearing witness to the tension of such a thing was not a venture she wanted to make, at least in close quarters. When a suitable husband had been found, she would pay her proper respects. Until then, however, she was content to track the progress of the affair from afar.
Turning, her feet already urging her toward the stables, she caught sight of a familiar flash of feathered wings. It was surprising how quickly a smile could tug at the corner of her lips with just a glimpse. As Mikino approached, Avalynn's thoughts abandoned her return trip home. "Lord Alcaeyn," she greeted, inclining her head to show the respect demanded of her in public. Her words and formality were smoothed by the playful amusement in her voice.
