Characters: Tom Riddle, poking LilyLu but open
Time/Date: 9 November 2023
Location: The battlements of Hogwarts
Warnings/Rating: TBD
Summary: Tom ponders many things.
Status: Incomplete

Tom had been keeping a low profile since the attack on Hogsmeade. He'd felt it was prudent to do so given the looks he'd been receiving in the immediate aftermath. So he'd kept a low profile, gone to his classes, attended meals, kept quiet and if he'd been asked, he had sternly distanced himself from what had happened and condemned the actions of the Death Eaters.

Not that he'd actually agreed with what he was saying but it was easy enough to mouth the words while still being amused by what had happened. He had to admit that these followers of his had a certain amount of flair. They had caused such chaos. It had been highly entertaining watching the staff and students run around like headless chickens on the day and for some times afterwards.

He felt these days that if he'd stood up in the Great Hall and yelled, "Boo!" half of them would collapse and die of shock immediately. Of course it was quite likely that the other half would turn around and hex him severely which is why he hadn't tried it despite the amusement value it promised.

But right now he just wanted a little peace and quiet without wary and watchful or angry eyes on him so he'd retreated up to the battlements after classes. He was sure it would prompt whispers and talk but just a few minutes of peace would be appreciated right now.

Lily was of the mind there was a conspiracy to keep her out of the dungeon. The words of caution had stopped, but she still saw her mum around a lot more than she usually did.

Sirius had made something of a game of asking her if she knew about this secret passage or that one, amd most of them she did know about. It was the ones she hadn't discovered that she had to investigate.

Granted, the first two had been duds - either completely fabricated or changed or moved or covered up in the rebuilding.

So why she thought to believe him when he gave her directions to one up here, she didn't know. Third time was a charm, maybe? Still, it was nice to get out of the commons now and again, and so it was that she wound her way along the battlements.

She did pause when she realized she wasn't alone, and she smiled when she saw who it was. "They let you up here without a babysitter?" She quipped before moving closer.

"Long time no see," she said as she leaned against the wall to face him.

Not so surprising, she'd rather forgotten why she'd come up here to begin with.

Tom felt a surge of irritation when he heard someone moving towards him but when they spoke, he was rather surprised to feel the irritation disappear. Of all the people in the school, he felt he could tolerate Lily the easiest, especially since she didn't seem upset with him like so many others. The fact that she was so easily manipulated also helped.

He smiled as she sat down opposite him. "I hit my babysitter over the head and made my escape while I could," he joked. It was only half a joke. While he didn't think he had an official babysitter per se, he was being watched even closer than he had before. As such he did reserve a touch of irritation amongst the amusement for his outside followers.

"It has indeed." He didn't bother to mention why that was so as he was sure she could easily guess. "I am glad to see you though and to see for myself that you are alright." He shook his head and affected a frustrated expression. "I don't know what those people thought they were trying to achieve but if it was to impress me, they have failed miserably."

Lily chuckled softly at his 'joke', though she wondered if he wouldn't have done such a thing, if he'd had a babysitter. Well, no. He probably wouldn't have. Not if there were witnesses, anyway.

"I'm ... well. Not fine, I guess. I can't play Quidditch. You know, it's kind of weird, but it doesn't bother me much when I'm sitting or wandering around or being bored in class, but once I got up on a broom, it hurt like the devil. So, that didn't last long. If I can't even fly a straight line, how'm I supposed to seek a snitch, right?"

She shrugged against the wall. "It was pretty bad though. I mean, when it happened. I guess if my grandmother hadn't gotten me to Mr Snape's like she did, I might not've lived through it."

Lily paused, plucking at the sleeve of her robe. "No one really knows what they were up to. Especially now that there hasn't been anything else since Halloween. Probably ... saving it up for the next full moon. Like they're going to make a regular thing of wreaking havoc or something.

"We think that because they haven't got a leader ... sort, they're just ... you know. Randomly throwing around the violence with no rhyme or reason. Which is probably worse, right? Because then you never know where or when it's going to hit, or who's going to be a target."

"I am sorry to hear that," Tom replied. He cocked his head slightly with curiosity. "But you will get better, won't you? You'll be able to fly again?" He put on a good show of concern, knowing she'd appreciate that.

"I'm glad she did then," he said with a smile. Then he looked thoughtful for a moment as he tried to place the name Snape. "I have heard that name. Snape. Everyone tends to look rather smugly vindictive when they mention his name in my vicinity so I'm gathering he had something to do with my other self's downfall?"

He snorted and shook his head. "Well, if they're looking for leadership from me, they are most definitely barking up the wrong tree. What they're doing is stupidity itself." And yes, that was true. It was amusing as all hell but it was stupid. There didn't seem to be much in the way of thought and planning behind it. It made him wonder just what caliber of follower he had out there.

"Eventually, yeah," Lily agreed. "Not this season, but it's not a big deal since this season ends just after holidays, because of the tournament. I guess they're planting some sort of hedgemaze in the pitch. Like they did for the one my dad was in."

She wondered if that was a standard task, or if they were just being lazy and uncreative. Whoever 'they' were.

Lily hesitated slightly. But what would it matter, now, if he knew that Snape had betrayed him? It wasn't like he couldn't find that out from reading some of the more detailed accounts of history. "He did. He ... he was a spy, for nearly the whole time he was a ... one of your followers. But after you - the other you, the before you - killed my grandparents ... my grandmother, really, he ..." she shrugged. "Well, it turned him on you. Because he loved her. Still does, I guess, since they're ... you know."

She hadn't liked to think of her grandmother with an older man, and she liked the idea even less after having seen him. Her grandmother was so pretty and Snape was so ... ... not pretty. She was grateful for the relationship since it had saved her life, but she really couldn't think about them together without feeling a little queasy.

Shaking off the thoughts, she nodded. "Oh, no doubt. It is stupid, attacking people like that. And it did get some of them caught and put on trial and the like, so ... I guess there was that, at least."

Tom nodded, looking interested. "I'm quite looking forward to this Tournament. I'd read about it, of course, but I'm surprised to see that its been resurrected. It's quite dangerous from what's in the books."

"Sounds like an excellent Slytherin," Tom said with an almost bland calm as though the news didn't affect him at all. And it didn't really. It was irritating that he'd apparently somehow missed that but he didn't buy into the fact that the man turned on him for something as idiotic as love. This Snape wasn't a Gryffindor after all. He knew that much. It made him wonder what it was that had truly motivated the man and whether he'd ever be able to find out.

"Good riddance," he said with an idle flip of one hand. And that was yet another quite real reaction. If they were stupid enough to get caught then they deserved everything they got and they certainly didn't deserve any concern from him. He didn't want idiots amongst his followers. "I have enough on my plate with all my studies without having to put up with the repercussions of such stupidity. If they were thinking that making my life difficult would impress me, they were very, very wrong."

He'd have been far more impressed if they'd found some foolproof way of communicating with him instead of indulging in grandiose yet futile gestures.

"It is. A ..." Lily trailed off. A boy died in the last one. Right, because Voldemort's ratty companion had killed him. "There were dragons at the last one," she said instead. "No one knows what they're tossing out for this one, but Tris said he heard roaring in the woods. But then, Tris is full of ... malarkey more often than not."

Lily shrugged slightly to his observation of Snape. "I suppose so. I mean, I can't say anything bad about him since I probably wouldn't be here if not for him, so ... you know." She grinned slightly, and prodded lightly at her stomach. That, and he'd helped her dad defeat Lord Voldemort and made enough of an impression that he named her brother after him.

Studying him at his dismissal of the ... Death Eaters and whoever else had made the fuss in Hogsmeade, she tilted her head slightly. "Why would ... I mean, it's not like you told them, hey go attack Hogsmeade or anything like that. Why would it reflect on you? Really, if anyone thinks you had anything at all to do with that, they're a bit mental, right? How could you have?"
