Characters: Severus Snape, Niles Lexington & Lily Evans
Time/Date: 6 October, mid-afternoon
Location: Diagon Alley, various shops – there’s a list of what he’s after in the post – pick a shop and have at it. Multiple threads welcome.
Warnings/Rating: S for snark at the very least
Summary: Severus has things to take care of in Diagon Alley.
Status: Complete

Severus had put this off for as long as he possibly could but he’d eventually come to the realisation that the time had come, as the walrus said. There were things he needed that he could not get from the Muggle world or in Knockturn, thus it was time to head into Diagon Alley.

He pulled on his robes with an air of disgruntlement and discomfort. He would have been quite happy to simply owl order what he needed but unfortunately some of the things he needed either couldn’t be owl ordered or they changed just enough that he needed to see them for himself to determine if they were what he wanted. So he’d waited and made a list and now he was going to get what he needed, whether he or the denizens of Diagon Alley were ready or not.

He snorted as he stalked down the stairs and out the front door, his robes billowing around him. He glanced down at the list in hand as he made a tentative plan of which order to attack things. Places like the apothecary and the book store were not urgent and thus he could place them well down the list.

The first stop was obviously going to be Gringotts to determine the state of his vault. He’d already been contacted by them to tell him it was still there, that Minerva had never touched a single knut in it nor had she closed it and that Gringotts was putting procedures in place to return any intact vaults to their no-longer-deceased owners and would he please sign these papers so that the whole process could be expedited. The letter had ended with an almost offhand comment that the twenty-five years between his death and reappearance had allowed the bank’s usual compound interest to do very nice things to his balance.

Once that was taken care of, robes were probably the first order of business. Twenty-five years had taken their toll and while he had no objection to wearing threadbare robes in his own home, he was probably due to buy some new ones. Especially if he intended to follow through on the vague thought he’d had of finding some sort of job so that he didn’t turn into a complete hermit. Though what kind of job was quite beyond him right now.

Quills, ink, parchment, glassware for his workroom, replacements for the linen, blankets and duvets beyond what Lily had snuck into the house and some doxycide because he couldn’t be bothered brewing something so tedious himself and he was fairly certain he had a doxy infestation in the attic. And once those things were sorted, then he could peruse the apothecary and see if it had anything interesting and from there he would finish his day in the bookshop.

He nodded to himself and tucked the parchment back in his robes as he swept out of the house and ducked down the nearby alley he used for apparition. A moment later he was in the rear yard of the Leaky Cauldron. He tapped on the wall and stepped into Diagon Alley.

"Ah," Severus said, now able to place the name with a face. Though if he recalled correctly, Dorcas Meadowes had been one of the many casualties of the first war. Not a time he cared to remember much. "I knew of her."

That division of labour actually intrigued him more than he was willing to let on. The one thing, more than anything else, that had put him off the idea of opening an apothecary was having to deal with the customers. The genuine ones probably wouldn't have been a problem but he'd suspected that his... notoriety would have attracted the curious as well.

"Indeed?" he said with a small smile. "You've gathered a list of pros and cons, have you? I'd like to hear them. Let's see if they match up with my mental list."

"Fair enough. I'll even put them in written form so you can review them at your leisure." She paused. "Even if we've already highlighted the primary pros while we were standing here."

Really, she did think it would be nice. "I get to design the shop layout, right? Once you've found a place?" Her brows elevated in amusement, and despite knowing they were simply speaking in hypotheticals, she was a little excited by the idea of it.

It was almost like being independently employed. At least she knew she'd like her boss, and her grin broadened at that thought.

"Suppose I should leave you to your perusal and shopping," she reflected. They could chat at home, after all. "And get on with my own."

Severus actually smiled then laughed at her response, a reaction that surely would have had any of his former students thinking that the apocalypse was upon them. After all, if Severus Snape was laughing, it couldn't be good, could it?

"I'll think about it," he said mock-imperiously.

He glanced around the shop again and nodded. "Probably for the best. I am liable to be here for some time. I want to see whether the owner is capable of getting in some of the more esoteric ingredients and how much he's likely to gouge out of me for doing so."

She did enjoy making him laugh, and she smiled gently in response to the sound. "Best think fast then, and come up with the proper answer," she teased playfully before she turned away.

There were a couple of things she had to pick up, after all, and things to do. People to chat with. Things like that.

While she was sorely tempted to touch him or kiss his cheek or something else overly affectionate, she refrained and instead busied herself with her shopping before slipping out of the shop with her purchases.
