Characters: Severus Snape, Niles Lexington & Lily Evans
Time/Date: 6 October, mid-afternoon
Location: Diagon Alley, various shops – there’s a list of what he’s after in the post – pick a shop and have at it. Multiple threads welcome.
Warnings/Rating: S for snark at the very least
Summary: Severus has things to take care of in Diagon Alley.
Status: Complete

Severus had put this off for as long as he possibly could but he’d eventually come to the realisation that the time had come, as the walrus said. There were things he needed that he could not get from the Muggle world or in Knockturn, thus it was time to head into Diagon Alley.

He pulled on his robes with an air of disgruntlement and discomfort. He would have been quite happy to simply owl order what he needed but unfortunately some of the things he needed either couldn’t be owl ordered or they changed just enough that he needed to see them for himself to determine if they were what he wanted. So he’d waited and made a list and now he was going to get what he needed, whether he or the denizens of Diagon Alley were ready or not.

He snorted as he stalked down the stairs and out the front door, his robes billowing around him. He glanced down at the list in hand as he made a tentative plan of which order to attack things. Places like the apothecary and the book store were not urgent and thus he could place them well down the list.

The first stop was obviously going to be Gringotts to determine the state of his vault. He’d already been contacted by them to tell him it was still there, that Minerva had never touched a single knut in it nor had she closed it and that Gringotts was putting procedures in place to return any intact vaults to their no-longer-deceased owners and would he please sign these papers so that the whole process could be expedited. The letter had ended with an almost offhand comment that the twenty-five years between his death and reappearance had allowed the bank’s usual compound interest to do very nice things to his balance.

Once that was taken care of, robes were probably the first order of business. Twenty-five years had taken their toll and while he had no objection to wearing threadbare robes in his own home, he was probably due to buy some new ones. Especially if he intended to follow through on the vague thought he’d had of finding some sort of job so that he didn’t turn into a complete hermit. Though what kind of job was quite beyond him right now.

Quills, ink, parchment, glassware for his workroom, replacements for the linen, blankets and duvets beyond what Lily had snuck into the house and some doxycide because he couldn’t be bothered brewing something so tedious himself and he was fairly certain he had a doxy infestation in the attic. And once those things were sorted, then he could peruse the apothecary and see if it had anything interesting and from there he would finish his day in the bookshop.

He nodded to himself and tucked the parchment back in his robes as he swept out of the house and ducked down the nearby alley he used for apparition. A moment later he was in the rear yard of the Leaky Cauldron. He tapped on the wall and stepped into Diagon Alley.

He really, really needed to stop wearing his robes to rags. At least he managed to keep his work robes in better shape, though he hadn't quite gotten around to getting a new set. Not with patrols and returning dead and threats and werewolves and murders and Bellatrix Lestrange still on the loose. Even if they probably knew where she was (and they now suspected that perhaps Rodolphus wasn't quite as missing as they'd believed initially).

But there wasn't much to be done about any of that.

So it was the Vulture found himself on his day off doing one of the things he most dreaded.

Studying himself in one of the mirrors, he glanced back toward the door as it opened - which promptly resulted in a double-take. Yes, of course he knew that certain people who had once been his professor were alive and well again, but he still didn't expect them to come waltzing (or skulking) into buildings he was currently occupying.

Grinning a little, deciding he at least had to say hello, Vulture took a few steps toward the younger-but-technically-older other wizard. "Professor Snape," he greeted him with as straight a face as he could manage. He did wonder what Snape's reaction was going to be to that - if he even recognized him. But surely he would. Vulture was a bit older, and ... well, all right, Snape would know him as Niles because the 'call me Vulture' had come about somewhat later in life, but hell. This was bound to be fun.

Severus' first glance encompassed everything within sight in the shop, a skill he'd picked up stepping into Death Eater meetings. It was always wise to be able to know where everything and everyone was, not mention be able to read the undercurrents. Thus he definitely noticed the man in the shop as well as the usual shop assistants he was expecting. He also saw the girl who'd been heading towards him with growing recognition and trepidation on her face hesitate when the man approached him instead.

His eyes narrowed at the greeting. One of his students then, since those who were too young to have been taught by him had tended to refer to him as 'Mister' or 'sir', those older mostly by his surname... or whatever insult was their favourite at the time.

It took a moment to place the face though then he arched an eyebrow, more at the hints of amusement he could detect than the identification. Niles Lexington had been a Gryffindor like many others, perhaps a bit brighter than most. "Niles Lexington," he said in a neutral tone.

"Vulture, actually," he corrected, running one hand down his mouth to do his best to erase the smile on his lips. He couldn't even begin to imagine how that would go over. It was bad enough explaining it around to the professors (though the conversation with the caretaker had been amusing). But then, it wouldn't be much of an explanation. It was a name that suited him far better than Niles did.

"Good to see you still alive an' well, an' out and about." It was slightly awkward, talking to his former professor in a public setting - but what about the returning dead wasn't awkward?

He glanced down at himself and recalled he was in the middle of trying on robes (the sleeves on these were too long), and he grinned a little before he shrugged. "Settlin' in all right an' all that? Don't get to talk much to the returned ones, but everyone I have talked to seems to be doin' all right. Granted, most of 'em have family an' the like."

Severus was firmly of the opinion that Lexington must have brain damage of some sort if he truly expected him to use such a ludicrous nickname. No doubt it had some meaning but it was nothing short of laughable. Obviously an attempt to seem intimidating or impressive or something along those lines. Severus wasn't intimidated or impressed.

"Is there some reason I shouldn't be... out and about, Mr Lexington?" he said mildly.

He snorted and looked around, beckoning the still-hesitating girl towards them. "I am fine," he said shortly. He couldn't imagine what had prompted the question other than sheer and utter nosiness, not something he cared to encourage. "My family was dead long before I died. I am perfectly capable of managing on my own." He smirked slightly. "I have eagerly required skills despite my twenty-five years of... absence."

The girl scurried over and looked almost terrified. Which amused Severus no end. He made no pretence at being a good man after all. "I require three sets of robes. Black. Two sets are to be serviceable and utilitarian. Nothing fancy. No embroidery or other such frippery. I also require a set of dress robes. Also black or a very dark green. They may have tasteful embroidery or patterning. Nothing gaudy."

The girl gulped when he finished and hurried off. He suspected she was going to hand him over to whoever deal with 'difficult' customers. More fool her. His needs were simple enough despite his personality. A little more courage on her part would have rewarded her with an excellent commission and if she was vaguely intelligent and efficient, a tip as well.

Vulture looked for a moment as though he was pondering an answer to that before he shrugged and shook his head. "No reason you shouldn't," he assured the other wizard. "We've just seen more of your housemate than of you, that's all." Yes, all right, he was fishing a little bit, but he was nosy. So sue him. He was curious about the man his boss' mother was living with because they seemed like a very odd couple, especially given what he'd seen of Lily.

He was trying not to grin too broadly, but it was always kind of fun to play with the cranky ones. Granted, he'd be significantly more careful around the one who'd gone through the war than he'd been around Quoft, but ... still.

"No doubts at all about your ability to manage. Just makin' conversation, s'all," he said as he listened to the very precise order. The way the girl was acting was almost enough to crack him up, but he did have it in him to maintain something vaguely resembling a proper face in public.

While it was on the tip of his tongue to ask where he was going with dress robes, he decided that ventured past fishing into prying, so he held that one back.

"How kind," Severus said with dry sarcasm. Then he snorted and moved a little further into the shop. He could see the girl talking franctically with an older woman with much hand-waving and forlorn expressions. The woman looked sensible so he rather hoped she would take over. "Lily is more gregarious than I am and also far more tolerant of people in general."

Also he'd been busy with a few little tentative requests that had come in. The requesters hadn't been sure he'd consider their offers but he'd been amused by it so he'd taken on the commissions. He did wonder what was going to be done with the poison though... not that it was any of his business really.

He made a non-committal noise and was about to answer when the older woman came over and eyed him narrowly. "I kept all of Madam Malkin's files when I bought her out so I have your measurements, Professor." She frowned at him. "You've lost weight so I'll want to do some final fittings so don't go away. Now. The dress robes. I have some in black. Green and silver embroidery, snake, ivy and leaf pattern. The Slytherins tend to like it, at least the ones with taste. Give me ten minutes to pull everything out and we can start doing the fittings."

With that the woman bustled off and Severus watched her go with satisfaction. Efficient and brisk. Just what he liked when buying clothes. He turned back to Lexington and arched an eyebrow, a trace of smug satisfaction on his face. "I do believe I may be out of here before you."

"Hell of a lot cuter, too," he pointed out, brows elevating slightly. Yes, he was having far too much fun with this. He snorted back a laugh at himself and watched the interactions, more than a little amused at how the younger witch was overreacting. "No offense or anything," he added as an afterthought.

Vulture waved off the comment of Severus being done before him, and he shrugged. "Probably, but I like bein' a pain in the arse," he said - as if he wasn't making that plainly obvious.

But he supposed Severus had a point. He really did have other things to do besides harassing customers. "Right, well, good to see you all alive an' well an' all that. Suppose I should go get my own self taken care of." Because that was why he was here. To buy robes. Not to amuse himself by seeing just how snarky he could get his former professor to be in public.

Severus snorted and rolled his eyes. "Obviously," he said, his sarcasm more trenchant and yet at the same time lacking any bitterness or heat. "Lily has always been beautiful. It is hardly a revelation to say so."

Though he couldn't help the tiny flare of jealousy that someone else had noticed. As illogical as it was, he just couldn't help it. He knew what he was like after all, both physically and otherwise. He couldn't even hope to compete with all those others who found Lily beautiful.

The woman came bustling back as Lexington was speaking, black robes slung over her arm and a look of determination in her eyes. "Mr Lexington," he said in farewell then he allowed the woman to bustle him over towards the rear of the store to try on his new robes.

Experimenting was proving to be interesting, even if it did mean restocking entirely too often. While she appreciated the use of the school's workrooms for her projects, she wasn't so rude as to dip into their supplies.

Her thoughts were wandering, chasing ceaseless circles around what Kevin had said when she'd been to watch the Gryffindor team practicing. He was ... confused, she'd decided. Misremembering. It had been a battle - a heated one at that - and surely he just ... heard wrong. Misinterpreted.

Stretching up to pluck a bottle off a higher shelf, with her back to the door, Lily studied the label before replacing the bottle. Truthfully, she wasn't sure what she was after, but the apothecary was a useful shop that wasn't the bookstore - as much as she loved it - and wasn't home.

With her basket over one arm and a slight furrow in her brow, she moved on toward the seeds. Maybe come spring she could plant some things in the backyard. Surely they wouldn't mind a garden out there that grew things to use in potions.

If she stayed. This was only supposed to be temporary, wasn't it? Plucking a packet of seeds from the rack of them, Lily read over the back to determine planting season and what they grew best with, without actually paying attention to what sort of seeds she'd picked up.

Severus escaped into the apothecary with relief. He didn't particularly like the looks he'd gotten from some people. Surprisingly few of them were threatening, hostile or wary maybe but not actually threatening, but many of them were curious or speculative or knowing, as if they knew more than he did. While he'd admit to himself that the latter was entirely possible given he'd been dead for twenty-five years, he still didn't much like the looks. They made his skin crawl.

He relaxed in the familiar shop though. Even though this was the first time he'd set foot in the Diagon Alley apothecary, it was familiar. Familiar ingredients, familiar smells, enough to let him relax a little.

He smiled a little when he looked around and saw something else familiar. He approached Lily silently, a technique he'd employed as successfully in sneaking up on erring students as he had in more serious situations. He glanced at what she was looking at then smirked. "I believe there would need to be considerable rehabilitation of the soil in the back yard before those would grow."

Lily jumped, made a little noise, and clapped one hand over her mouth before she turned to peer over her shoulder. "Don't do that," she said as she dropped her hand to push lightly at his chest, a faint laugh bubbling past her lips. It was bad enough when he snuck up on her in the house ... but she wasn't expecting that when she was out and about shopping.

Emerald eyes shifted to the seed packet she'd been reading over, and she shook her head as she replaced it. "I ... wasn't really ..." Her brow furrowed and she sighed. "Just plucked it up at random, I suppose," she continued as she turned her eyes to the others on display.

"But I was thinking about it. If ..." If I stayed. She didn't want to think about leaving, but that was sort of the agreement, wasn't it? That was how she'd presented it, at any rate. "Well, starting ... a garden of useful plants. Things it'd be a pain to go stalking about on the full moon to pick. Or things better fresh."

She offered him a slight smile as she glanced back to him. "Though I suppose that's presumptuous of me." She searched his face, trying to find any evidence at all amidst his difficult-to-decipher features that there'd been anything at all behind what Kevin had said. Even if she had convinced herself Kevin had been ... wrong, somehow.

Severus' smirk widened slightly and amusement gleamed in his eyes. "Why not?" he asked innocently. "It's highly entertaining."

He raised an eyebrow and turned to consider the shelves of seed packets. "That is not a bad idea. I had been considering it myself." he snorted softly. "Semi-seriously at least. I never bothered before. Quite apart from the fact that I don't really have the true interest in cultivating such plants, I spent most of the year at Hogwarts and Pomona and her acolytes were far better as growing such things than I was. What they didn't or couldn't grow was often available in the Forest or I could use the Hogwarts budget."

He gave her a curious look, a small smile quirking one side of his mouth. "Why would it be presumptuous? You have every right to plant such things if you wish. I certainly don't mind."

"Entertaining for you. Not so much for the one jumping and squeaking," she pointed out. Emerald eyes returned to the shelves and she reached up to select a few of the more common plants, turning the packets over to read the backs as if she was going to go through with a garden.

"Not surprised. You've probably got a black thumb anyway," she teased him, bumping him lightly with one elbow.

She shifted her weight slightly before she shrugged a little. "Presumptuous because ... it isn't like I'll be staying there forever. Now that I've got a job and ... some money saved up, I should ... well, it was only meant to be temporary, wasn't it?"

She wanted him to say no. To say she should stay. The fanciful part of her wouldn't have minded some dramatic declarations about how he couldn't live without her, but that was just silly. He was a grown man, capable of taking care of himself. He didn't need her.

"So then you'd have this garden that you'd either have to tend to or ... watch go to ruins, and either way ..." Lily shrugged slightly again as she studied the packets, realizing her hand was trembling a little.

Severus let the first comment pass. It was true. He njoyed watching people jump. It was why he'd done it so aften as a teacher. Revenge for every miserable class he'd been forced to teach. He did raise an eyebrow at the second one though.

"Not black, just... disinterested. Plants interest me in terms of how they can be used in potions, not in how they grow. Pomona used to scold me for it but she still grew them for me." He smirked a little at the memory. Oddly enough, he missed many of the people who'd been his colleagues.

He hesitated for a moment, not really wishing to get into this in a public place but the shop was empty and the proprietor obviously in the back room.

"I don't see why it should be temporary," he said quietly. "There is no reason for you to move out, is there? I..." He licked his lips. "I would like you to stay."

"No ... reason," she agreed. Except for the fact she'd probably do something foolish and then he'd want her to move out. "I just ..."

Clearly she was just over thinking. Over complicating things.

"Well, I'll do a bit of research then and ... and see what we want in the yard," she said, turning away from the seeds to face him. She tipped her chin up, gazing at him, studying his face the way she had been for ... well, the past week or so, now.

Lifting a hand, she brushed her fingertips against his cheek before she shook her head at herself and dropped her hand. Public places, and all that. "So what were you after?" she said, a little abruptly as she attempted to change the topic. "If I'd known, I could've picked things up for you," she said with a little smile.

She was doing it again. Studying him as though she was trying to find something in his face and he had no idea what it might be. She'd been doing it all week, possibly longer but he'd only really noticed this week. Severus wasn't certain if it was something he should ask about or whether he should just leave her be and let her approach it in her own time.

He eyed her curiously when she brushed his cheek. He'd always know she was a far more tactile person than he was but her actions of late had been less those of a friend, those kinds of things he remembered from school, and more... well, something else. Again, he wasn't certain whether he should ask her or not.

So instead he... accepted the change of subject. "Nothing in particular. I simply wanted to see whether they had anything different from the apothecary in Knockturn or whether their prices were better. And perhaps see if anything here prompted some inspiration in terms of... perhaps acquiring a job."

Lily tried very, very, very hard not to giggle at the idea of Severus working a job. She knew he'd taught at the school (though it hadn't been his preferred job), but the idea of him ... doing anything aside from brewing potions simply didn't fit in her mind.

She couldn't see him selling books or potion ingredients or working any sort of retail, or with people.

"Have you found any sort of inspiration yet? Cas and I think you should go with the whole, starting your own apothecary thing, and then I could work for you." Lily smiled up at him, tucking her hands against her sides so she wouldn't give in to the increasingly overwhelming urges to touch him.

Really, she was going to end up doing something monumentally ridiculous at some point, and ... boy, would that be awkward.

Severus raised an eyebrow thoughtfully at the suggestion. It was something that had occurred to him, he just hadn't been sure whether he wanted to go through the whole rigmarole of finding a shop and doing all the establishment. His visit to Gringotts had shown him he could afford to do it, it was just whether he had the tolerance levels.

He frowned. "Cas?" he asked quizzically. The nickname didn't exactly ring a bell. His memory was good but even he wasn't infallible. "And the thought of opening an apothecary has occurred to me."

He looked around the shop he was in now and this time he sized it up as competition rather than simply a place to shop. It was well-stocked with ingredients but lacked anything beyond the basic potions. That wouldn't be an issue for him and certainly his reputation - part of it anyway - and Mastery would be an advantage.

"It's a possibility," he concluded.

"Dorcas. Meadowes," Lily clarified. "She was a friend of mine in school; I ... am not sure you knew her. And I know it occurred to you. You were the one who mentioned it ... weeks ago," Lily reminded him with a cheeky grin. "It was how we even got to talking about it. I think it'd be brilliant, you hiding away in your lair, brewing potions ... me, handling all the people you don't want to have anything to do with."

Not that she had anything against her job at the bookstore. She definite liked it there, and she enjoyed the company. Now that she'd more or less concluded that dating was a pointless effort on her part, she was good friends with the blokes there.

"If you need some further convincing, I'll be happy to sit down with you after dinner and go over the pros and cons of this venture," Lily added with a grin. While it did sound like fun, she certainly wasn't about to push anything.

"Ah," Severus said, now able to place the name with a face. Though if he recalled correctly, Dorcas Meadowes had been one of the many casualties of the first war. Not a time he cared to remember much. "I knew of her."

That division of labour actually intrigued him more than he was willing to let on. The one thing, more than anything else, that had put him off the idea of opening an apothecary was having to deal with the customers. The genuine ones probably wouldn't have been a problem but he'd suspected that his... notoriety would have attracted the curious as well.

"Indeed?" he said with a small smile. "You've gathered a list of pros and cons, have you? I'd like to hear them. Let's see if they match up with my mental list."

"Fair enough. I'll even put them in written form so you can review them at your leisure." She paused. "Even if we've already highlighted the primary pros while we were standing here."

Really, she did think it would be nice. "I get to design the shop layout, right? Once you've found a place?" Her brows elevated in amusement, and despite knowing they were simply speaking in hypotheticals, she was a little excited by the idea of it.

It was almost like being independently employed. At least she knew she'd like her boss, and her grin broadened at that thought.

"Suppose I should leave you to your perusal and shopping," she reflected. They could chat at home, after all. "And get on with my own."

Severus actually smiled then laughed at her response, a reaction that surely would have had any of his former students thinking that the apocalypse was upon them. After all, if Severus Snape was laughing, it couldn't be good, could it?

"I'll think about it," he said mock-imperiously.

He glanced around the shop again and nodded. "Probably for the best. I am liable to be here for some time. I want to see whether the owner is capable of getting in some of the more esoteric ingredients and how much he's likely to gouge out of me for doing so."

She did enjoy making him laugh, and she smiled gently in response to the sound. "Best think fast then, and come up with the proper answer," she teased playfully before she turned away.

There were a couple of things she had to pick up, after all, and things to do. People to chat with. Things like that.

While she was sorely tempted to touch him or kiss his cheek or something else overly affectionate, she refrained and instead busied herself with her shopping before slipping out of the shop with her purchases.
