RP: Oops
Characters: Lily E, open
Time/Date: Afternoon, September 20, 2023
Location: Potions workroom, Hogwarts
Warnings/Rating: PG for Lily!swears
Summary: Lily has a potions accident
Status: Open (professors, students, staff, whoever)

"Oh, bloody buggering ..." Lily trailed off and bit her lip as she gazed at the ruined sleeve of her robe. Well, she had been experimenting, and she supposed even the very best of potion brewers had the occasional accident in the course of their lives.

She'd just wanted to see what happened when she made a few changes. Clearly, the cautions were in place for a reason. That reason was splattered all over the workbench and her robe.

Exhaling softly, Lily slipped her wand out and began to clean up the mess. She had another experiment she wanted to try, so she supposed she'd do that while she was already in ruined robes so she wouldn't ruin another set on another day.

Once she and the area were cleaned up, she raided the stores for another set of ingredients to give it another go.

She had started out leading, before she realized that was probably a bad idea, and she fell into step next to Lily instead, half walking the direction she thought - hoped - was the right way and half letting the other witch lead since she was less likely to get lost. She was silent for the most part - at least at first. It was a lot to take in, particularly when she was still questioning the truth of it.

But she was discovering she was falling further and further into the 'believing it all to be true' way of thinking. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Because it wasn't true, and she needed to keep a clear head and constant vigilance and...

But what if it was true? What was... what was she supposed to do?

"Do you..." she started to ask Lily before she realized that wasn't really what she wanted to say. But she didn't know what she wanted to say. The words kept catching in her throat. "What do you..." she tried again, but that wasn't really what she wanted. Sighing a bit, she tacked on a "...do?" to the end of it. 'What do you do?' was close enough, even if it wasn't exactly what she wanted to ask right now. It was close enough, and maybe Lily would get where she was going with it.

She thought she had an idea. "Those of us fortunate enough to have living family are connected with them. Though I showed up in my granddaughter's bedroom, so I didn't have to go far to reconnect. The Ministry has a program in place to help those who don't have family. Or who were disowned by family. They help with job placement, and funds for a place to live while you get on your feet.

"I'm currently working at a bookstore, and Severus was kind enough to offer me the use of his spare room. I'm catching up on potions and charms, and considering my career options once I get myself established and caught up."

Lily walked for a moment in silence. "Really it's ... it's a second chance. It is what you make of it. If ..." Lily hesitated. "You know Remus, don't you? You aren't too young to ... know him?"

So she'd been right then, not to open her mouth and launch into a tirade about Snape. Not if Lily was living with him, and she decided she didn't really want to get into the touchy subject that that likely was. If they'd been friends in school...

"Suppose... I'd have a lot of catching up to do," she muttered. "To get back into the field. Hopefully not three years worth again," she groaned. She didn't think she could take being in training again, not so soon after finally being done with it. Maybe they would make special allowances. Things... couldn't have changed that much in 30 years, right?

She glanced over at Lily's hesitation to bring up Remus, and frowned slightly. "Judging... from your word choice... I'm going to say we end up being friends somewhere along the line? I'm not too young to know of him, but that's all it is right now. We aren't exactly..." she shrugged. "Well, we know each other, know of each other, and interact every once in a while but... not really friends." She frowned. "Well, yet, I assume, given what you're telling me. Do I want to know where that was going?"

"I'm sure Harry can make arrangements for you in that area," Lily assured her. "He knew you, right? So I'm sure he can at least vouch for you to speed things along." Lily offered her an encouraging smile as they strolled along.

She was a little hesitant to get into ... any of it. It hardly seemed fair to bring that to her attention when Remus didn't even know she was back, or if he wanted it handled in a certain way.

But then, he was seventeen. Was it even likely they'd be jumping back into a relationship while he was at school? "Friends," Lily said. "Then ... a bit more," she hedged. "Married, actually," she said since it was bound to come up and she'd already opened the can of worms, so it was best to simply plunge on with it.

She tilted her head curiously. "Why?" she asked. "I mean, why Harry? I know he's The Boy Who Lived and everything, and I'm sure he went on to do wonderful things - probably vanquish the Dark Lord again or something - but is there some reason that his vouching for me is going help me skip on through 3 years of Auror training?"

Had they really gotten to know each other well enough over the four years she didn't remember that he would do that? That... was a really humbling concept, and she found that she was flattered by it immensely.

Of course, all that went out the window when Lily said they'd been married. She tripped over her own feet, stumbling into the wall, before managing to stop moving entirely, her mouth gaping open as she stared at Lily incredulously.

"Married?" she spluttered out. "He... me... I... no, no, I... I mean he's... it's not like I... but he would never..." she gaped a bit, shaking her head a little bit before she managed to get herself under a bit more of a semblance of control. "I... really? Til-death-do-you-part married?"

Lily's brow furrowed. "He's ... didn't I mention he was the head of the Auror department?" Perhaps she hadn't. She'd mentioned it to just about everyone else though. But no, perhaps it hadn't come up in this conversation. "But ... yes, Harry is the head of the department, and he spoke highly of you when he was telling me stories about the Order and the war."

Lily tried not to laugh at Tonks' reaction, lifting a hand to hide the smile that bloomed on her lips. "Yes," Lily murmured. "Apparently you had a time and a half convincing him, what with his ... furry little problem. But ... you were married, just ... just before the war got really bad, apparently."

And they'd died shortly after, but she trusted Tonks could do the math on that one.

Her eyes widened, and she laughed outright. "I... don't think it came up, no," she said. "Though that's... that's hardly surprising, I... wow. Head of the Auror department," she grinned. "And spoke highly of me? Well that's just..." she felt really humbled now, and flushed a bit. She'd have to... look Harry up and... thank him or something, for the kind words.

"I would..." she muttered, shaking her head a bit, though almost fondly. "He's so... sensitive about..." she bit her lip briefly before shooting Lily a shy look. "I had... entertained the thought more than once. He's certainly not unattractive, and... he seems... his sense of humour's just..." she trailed off, realizing she was playing the part of the lovestruck fool, and grinned sort of sheepishly. "Suppose it's for the best that he's 17 now," she said, trying not to be too disappointed about losing something that neither of them remembered having. "We can just dodge that awkwardness altogether."

In theory, at least.

Lily tried to smile, but she knew it fell short when Tonks mentioned Remus only being seventeen. But at least in this case, she didn't have memories of being married to him, having his child. She wasn't hanging onto stories of their time together but being the only one who knew the stories.

"Hopefully," Lily agreed gently.

Once they arrived at the Headmaster's office, Lily gestured slightly. "Suppose I'll leave you in his capable hands now, but... it was good to meet you. Best of luck," she said sincerely. At least Tonks, like her, had family. Teddy would undoubtedly be pleased to have both of his parents back, even if neither remembered him.
