RP: Oops
Characters: Lily E, open
Time/Date: Afternoon, September 20, 2023
Location: Potions workroom, Hogwarts
Warnings/Rating: PG for Lily!swears
Summary: Lily has a potions accident
Status: Open (professors, students, staff, whoever)

"Oh, bloody buggering ..." Lily trailed off and bit her lip as she gazed at the ruined sleeve of her robe. Well, she had been experimenting, and she supposed even the very best of potion brewers had the occasional accident in the course of their lives.

She'd just wanted to see what happened when she made a few changes. Clearly, the cautions were in place for a reason. That reason was splattered all over the workbench and her robe.

Exhaling softly, Lily slipped her wand out and began to clean up the mess. She had another experiment she wanted to try, so she supposed she'd do that while she was already in ruined robes so she wouldn't ruin another set on another day.

Once she and the area were cleaned up, she raided the stores for another set of ingredients to give it another go.

(( *is a dirty rotten cheat and knows it. IS NOT SORRY* ))

She... really had no idea how she'd gotten here.

The dungeons at Hogwarts had never been her favourite place to spend time while she'd been a student here, let alone as a recently certified Auror. She had no idea what she was doing back at Hogwarts, let alone roaming around through the dungeons. Lost, she might add, not like that was anything new.

She'd been sleeping, at home, in her bed, and suddenly she'd opened her eyes and she'd found herself back at school. She knew it was Hogwarts, she recognized the walls and the floors and the sounds and the smells. And the ghosts, even if they skittered away from her, whispering to each other in hushed voiced. She really didn't understand what was going on, and would have argued it was some kind of prank for April or her birthday, but it was... neither of those things, as far as she was aware.

Hearing noises from a nearby room, she hesitated briefly - she really didn't want to speak to Professor Snape and ask him what she was doing here. He hadn't liked her much as a student, not that she blamed him since she was not very good at potions, and she doubted he would have anything constructive to offer her. But she really didn't know how else she was going to get out of the dungeons, so she rapped her knuckles against the door, slipping it open and peering inside.

"'Wotcher," she offered to the red head inside, relief in her voice that it wasn't Snape (though the girl did look a bit old to be a student...). "Ah, hope I'm not interrupting anything?"

Lily turned her head slightly, regarding the woman. Her smile faltered briefly, because she'd seen pictures of the woman. Enough to know (well, guess) who she was. "Ah," Lily said, realizing belatedly that acting awkward might hint that something was off.

"Hello," she said as she set down her stirring rod and lowered the fire beneath the cauldron; she had a feeling this could take a while. "I ... ah. Are you ..." Lily hesitated. She knew the woman's given name, and she also knew the witch didn't like being referred to that way. "Tonks?" she finally managed.

She looked ... younger than the later pictures Lily had seen, but no surprise there; wasn't that the trend for most of those who had returned? Though perhaps 'most' wasn't fair; there were some they didn't know about, after all.

She stared a bit when the red head knew her... well name, and looked closer. The girl wasn't familiar on first glance, but on closer inspection, Tonks thought she could maybe know he from somewhere. A younger year maybe? She'd seen her around school?

"Tonks," she agreed, almost warily. "Look is this... some sort of training exercise? 'Cause Moody said we were past... and I know, constant vigilance, but I bloody well thought that when they gave me the certification we were done with this, year? But now I show up here and it's like you've been expecting me.

Or, at least, that was how it felt, given that the girl knew her name and didn't seem that surprised to see her here, despite the fact that three graduated some three years prior.

"Well, not ... expecting you, no, but ..." Lily frowned and backtracked. "It isn't part of a training exercise. You're in Hogwarts, and the current year is 2023. I know ... how that sounds. Believe me, I know how that sounds," Lily assured her. "My name is Lily Evans, and I died in 1981 in an attempt to save my son from Lord Voldemort. I ... returned to the living ... not so very long ago. Just over a month, give or take."

Lily offered her a shy, awkward sort of smile. She'd heard stories. She knew this was Remus' future wife, though ... maybe she was a touch too young to remember marrying Remus? Which was likely a good thing.

"If I'm not mistaken, you were one of the casualties of war in 1998, here at the castle." It was a lot, Lily knew, but it just seemed best to get it all out there.

2023? Tonks stared, and kind of giggled, and waited for the joke to stop, or for there to be some outward indicator that this was just a joke set up by Moody to teach her some kind of lesson. But when the redhead didn't give any indication...

"I..." she blinked a few times, leaning on one of the tables. "Okay, let's... for the sake of argument, we'll go with this theory. Far as I know, it's '94. Let's say it's 2023 and I died in '98 and..." she shook her head. That was getting confusing. "My point is, shouldn't I remember that?"

She had a whole moment then when she paused, and she stared at the girl. Lily... Evans? "Wait. As in Lily Evans Potter?" she almost looked familiar enough for that to really be the case. Bloody hell Moody was good at this.

Ninety-four. Lily had no idea when Tonks and Remus had ... gotten together, so that wasn't terribly helpful to her, as far as what she would or wouldn't remember. "No," Lily said gently. "It ... doesn't seem to work like that for the ones that ... that come back younger than they died. My ... James is ... he's sixteen. He returned ... at sixteen." Lily swallowed hard and looked away, knowing the pain was written plainly in emerald eyes. "Sirius, too," she added. "And ... and Remus is seventeen. They're all back, all alive, and none of them recall dying. None of them recall anything past the point, the age they returned."

She hesitated, but it most definitely was not her place to drop the 'oh by the way, you have a son' card.

"Potter," she agreed. "Formerly. We ... ah. Well, it's a bit ... illegal to be married to a sixteen year old boy, so ... we're not. Not together." Nor would they be, and that still occasionally drove needles of pain deep into her heart. She was mending that slowly though, very slowly.

"It ... is there anyone we ... You'll have to go to the Ministry, of course. Reregistration and the like. But is there anyone we should contact for you? They ... I suppose. I wouldn't be doing any contacting."

Say what you would about his methods, but Moody was thorough. When Lily started to look like she was really hurting, Tonks felt waves of sympathy boil up inside her. She didn't think that this girl was a threat to her, anyway, she was just part of the test, and Tonks eased her way closer, thinking she might offer comfort in some way if she was closer.

"Hey, it's... it's okay," she said hesitantly. "We'll figure something out, yeah? It'll work itself out."

She leaned a bit against the table Lily was standing at, trying not to get in the way of whatever Lily had been working on - she really had been abysmal at Potions - and listened as she talked. "Well, it's... jus' a year, right? You can let him grow up a bit and then see how things are?" she thought she was helping. She wanted to help. Is this what she was supposed to be doing?

"Moody," she decided, thinking about who to contact. "'summing he's still alive this far in the future. Kingsley'll do if he's not. Or. Well. I'm sure there's someone working there I could have a chat with," she said with a lazy smile. "I'm officially an Auror now, you know," she told Lily proudly, before realizing there... were probably better things to be doing than bragging at the moment.

Lily did summon up a smile for Tonks' efforts to help her. They were things she'd thought of before, and while James would be a year older, so too would she. It simply wasn't in the cards anymore.

"Moody ... he died early in the second war. One of the many who fell to save my son," she continued softly. "But Kingsley is ... he's the Minister," she murmured.

Her head tilted slightly. If Tonks was an Auror, officially, then she supposed she'd want to have a chat with Harry, too. Lily could at least arrange that, but ... she supposed the rules dictated she get Tonks to the Ministry first for all their questions.

"Suppose I could take you to the headmaster." She paused. "Professor Flitwick is the headmaster currently," she explained. "Can probably use the Floo in his office to get to the Ministry and get the ball rolling."

She winced a bit when Lily mentioned that Moody had died early into the second war. The part of her that was starting to really question how much of this was real and how much was just a game felt the vaguest flutterings of something like panic. How could she do this, be an Auror, without Mad-Eye? But most of that panic was brushed away by the fact that she still wasn't taking any of this to be real. It... was accurate down to the letter, but... it was just too weird. She'd died some four years into her future, and then been magically brought back to life having regressed? That didn't make any sense, did it?

"Harry," she said with a nod, when Lily brought him up. "He's a good kid," she couldn't help but saying, "already made some waved in the wizarding world in my time, just from the 3 years he's been at school." She wasn't sure why she felt the need to say that. Maybe to make Lily's face show pride, rather than that... vague lost feeling that Tonks was seeing right now.

She did kind of gape when it sunk in that Lily had just said that Kingsley was the Minister, her face brightening significantly. "Brilliant!" she said, totally enthused. "Now that's a bright future. Heh! Kingsley. Never would have pegged him for one to want all the paperwork that comes with the job," she grinned, feeling amused and a vague sense of pride in a friend for an accomplishment that either had yet to happen or had possibly never happened. She was still pleased then.

"Flitwick, huh?" she said. "So old Dumbledore finally retired then. You'd... best lead the way, I have a bad habit of getting lost after getting out of bed in the morning." She started to move towards the door, pausing about two steps in. "Not to... rush you," she said hesitantly. "If you were working on somethin', I can wait. Apparently I've been dead for 30 years - what's another 20 minutes, yeah?"

"He's brilliant," Lily agreed. "I heard about most of the waves he made," she assured Tonks with a soft smile. It really was sort of amazing that Harry had survived everything he had to come out victorious in the end.

"I think he was sort of ... voted into the position directly after the war," Lily said as she extinguished the fire beneath her cauldron and cleaned up the contents of it. She could come back to it later. "It was meant to be temporary, according to what Harry told me, but it wound up being ... less than temporary when he was doing such a brilliant job getting everything cleaned up."

She shook her head to Tonks' observation, her brow furrowing. That was something else they'd have to hit on. "Professor Dumbledore actually ... he was killed, in 1997, but he returned - like us - just a few weeks ago, significantly younger than when he died. He's here, in the castle. His little sister is with him as well, and she's a darling. A little timid at first, but she'll open up once she gets to know you."

She felt a little better when Lily's expression cleared. She'd never been very good at this sort of thing, but she was warmhearted and liked to try to cheer people up, even if she wasn't any good at it.

She chuckled a bit when Lily mentioned how Kingsley had gotten the job. "That sounds about right," she said. Knowing Kingsley, he probably still talked about the position like he was still only in there temporarily and just waiting for his replacement, even after 20 some years on the job. "Though really, after the last minister, Kingsley could wave a hand and smile and he'd be doing a brilliant job."

The hand that had been resting against one of the tables, supporting part of her weight slipped when Lily mentioned that Dumbledore had died. Feeling herself losing her balance, her feet moved quickly to try and regain some balance, and her elbow slipped down to try and steady herself on the table. Her feet slid out from under her, but she managed to remain standing with just a bruised elbow. She continued to stare at Lily and speak as though nothing had happened - because really, her losing her balance was hardly big news - and simply blinked in confusion. "Wait, start over and go slow. We're talking about the same Dumbledore, right? The Albus Dumbledore? Discoverer of the 12 uses of dragons blood and winner of the Order of Merlin however many times he's one it in whatever categories Headmaster of the school Dumbledore? Killed? There's some kind of mistake here."

She wasn't sure why this was hitting her harder than the mention of Moody's passing, except that... well, she'd sort of always thought that Dumbledore was going to live forever. And while she thought the idea of... him dying of natural causes was something she could have been surprised about and accepted, she didn't think she could grasp the concept that he'd been outright killed.

"Well, Harry ... explained it to me. Why he ..." Lily sighed and leaned against the work table. "It's a bit of a long, complicated story and I'm not completely sure I understand all of it. But the long and short of it is that Dumbledore had been cursed through ... something he'd done to himself. Putting on a cursed ring. And he was going to die soon, anyway? So he arranged his own death."

She dropped her eyes slightly. "Severus was the one who actually ..." Lily made a slight gesture with one hand. "But it was ... it was part of the plan they'd had in place." She paused and wondered if Tonks already knew about Sev being a spy. Surely she must; Harry mentioned she'd been in the Order.

But was she too young yet to know that part? Lily supposed Tonks' reaction would tell.

It... made more sense, and made her feel a whole lot better that it had been arranged, rather than... whatever it was she'd been picturing. That fit better. She didn't see Dumbledore as someone who could ever be taken down without consent, no matter how old and frail he got.

Her eyes did darken when Lily mentioned that it had been Severus who had dealt the final blow, and it was on the tip of her tongue to say something to the effect of how she wasn't surprised, and launch into some sort of tirade about how he'd never been trustworthy and she didn't understand why they continued to put such... blind faith in him, but there was something about her expression that made Tonks think that may not be the best subject to launch into with Lily. She did vaguely recall stories of them being friends at one point in school, maybe she still harboured those feelings of friendship years later. So she bit her tongue, and nodded her head.

"The old man was never very clear about what his intentions were, but he always did have a plan. Suppose it would be foolish not to trust he knew what he was doing, if he decided he was done here," her lips quirked into a smile that didn't reach her eyes before she pulled herself back into a more stable standing position, and turned slightly back towards the door. "Headmaster's office is still this general direction, yeah?"

Lily was glad Tonks hadn't said anything about Severus, because she would have leapt to his defense. Lily thought that, at this point, the resurfaced emotions were quicker to come to the surface, and sooner or later someone was going to read what they really were. Perhaps not Tonks, but ... someone.

"This way, yes," Lily agreed, glad enough to leave the topic. To shift it into someone else's hands. She never knew exactly how information was too much and what wasn't enough. Like ... the son-thing. Definitely best to leave that for someone else. She wasn't sure who, exactly, had broken the news to Remus, but let them have the honor of breaking it to Tonks as well.

Stepping out of the workroom, she started along the hall with Tonks. She was running a mental list of people to alert before reminding herself it wasn't her responsibility. She'd simply found Tonks (well, Tonks had found her). That didn't mean she was responsible for her.

She had started out leading, before she realized that was probably a bad idea, and she fell into step next to Lily instead, half walking the direction she thought - hoped - was the right way and half letting the other witch lead since she was less likely to get lost. She was silent for the most part - at least at first. It was a lot to take in, particularly when she was still questioning the truth of it.

But she was discovering she was falling further and further into the 'believing it all to be true' way of thinking. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Because it wasn't true, and she needed to keep a clear head and constant vigilance and...

But what if it was true? What was... what was she supposed to do?

"Do you..." she started to ask Lily before she realized that wasn't really what she wanted to say. But she didn't know what she wanted to say. The words kept catching in her throat. "What do you..." she tried again, but that wasn't really what she wanted. Sighing a bit, she tacked on a "...do?" to the end of it. 'What do you do?' was close enough, even if it wasn't exactly what she wanted to ask right now. It was close enough, and maybe Lily would get where she was going with it.

She thought she had an idea. "Those of us fortunate enough to have living family are connected with them. Though I showed up in my granddaughter's bedroom, so I didn't have to go far to reconnect. The Ministry has a program in place to help those who don't have family. Or who were disowned by family. They help with job placement, and funds for a place to live while you get on your feet.

"I'm currently working at a bookstore, and Severus was kind enough to offer me the use of his spare room. I'm catching up on potions and charms, and considering my career options once I get myself established and caught up."

Lily walked for a moment in silence. "Really it's ... it's a second chance. It is what you make of it. If ..." Lily hesitated. "You know Remus, don't you? You aren't too young to ... know him?"

So she'd been right then, not to open her mouth and launch into a tirade about Snape. Not if Lily was living with him, and she decided she didn't really want to get into the touchy subject that that likely was. If they'd been friends in school...

"Suppose... I'd have a lot of catching up to do," she muttered. "To get back into the field. Hopefully not three years worth again," she groaned. She didn't think she could take being in training again, not so soon after finally being done with it. Maybe they would make special allowances. Things... couldn't have changed that much in 30 years, right?

She glanced over at Lily's hesitation to bring up Remus, and frowned slightly. "Judging... from your word choice... I'm going to say we end up being friends somewhere along the line? I'm not too young to know of him, but that's all it is right now. We aren't exactly..." she shrugged. "Well, we know each other, know of each other, and interact every once in a while but... not really friends." She frowned. "Well, yet, I assume, given what you're telling me. Do I want to know where that was going?"

"I'm sure Harry can make arrangements for you in that area," Lily assured her. "He knew you, right? So I'm sure he can at least vouch for you to speed things along." Lily offered her an encouraging smile as they strolled along.

She was a little hesitant to get into ... any of it. It hardly seemed fair to bring that to her attention when Remus didn't even know she was back, or if he wanted it handled in a certain way.

But then, he was seventeen. Was it even likely they'd be jumping back into a relationship while he was at school? "Friends," Lily said. "Then ... a bit more," she hedged. "Married, actually," she said since it was bound to come up and she'd already opened the can of worms, so it was best to simply plunge on with it.

She tilted her head curiously. "Why?" she asked. "I mean, why Harry? I know he's The Boy Who Lived and everything, and I'm sure he went on to do wonderful things - probably vanquish the Dark Lord again or something - but is there some reason that his vouching for me is going help me skip on through 3 years of Auror training?"

Had they really gotten to know each other well enough over the four years she didn't remember that he would do that? That... was a really humbling concept, and she found that she was flattered by it immensely.

Of course, all that went out the window when Lily said they'd been married. She tripped over her own feet, stumbling into the wall, before managing to stop moving entirely, her mouth gaping open as she stared at Lily incredulously.

"Married?" she spluttered out. "He... me... I... no, no, I... I mean he's... it's not like I... but he would never..." she gaped a bit, shaking her head a little bit before she managed to get herself under a bit more of a semblance of control. "I... really? Til-death-do-you-part married?"

Lily's brow furrowed. "He's ... didn't I mention he was the head of the Auror department?" Perhaps she hadn't. She'd mentioned it to just about everyone else though. But no, perhaps it hadn't come up in this conversation. "But ... yes, Harry is the head of the department, and he spoke highly of you when he was telling me stories about the Order and the war."

Lily tried not to laugh at Tonks' reaction, lifting a hand to hide the smile that bloomed on her lips. "Yes," Lily murmured. "Apparently you had a time and a half convincing him, what with his ... furry little problem. But ... you were married, just ... just before the war got really bad, apparently."

And they'd died shortly after, but she trusted Tonks could do the math on that one.

Her eyes widened, and she laughed outright. "I... don't think it came up, no," she said. "Though that's... that's hardly surprising, I... wow. Head of the Auror department," she grinned. "And spoke highly of me? Well that's just..." she felt really humbled now, and flushed a bit. She'd have to... look Harry up and... thank him or something, for the kind words.

"I would..." she muttered, shaking her head a bit, though almost fondly. "He's so... sensitive about..." she bit her lip briefly before shooting Lily a shy look. "I had... entertained the thought more than once. He's certainly not unattractive, and... he seems... his sense of humour's just..." she trailed off, realizing she was playing the part of the lovestruck fool, and grinned sort of sheepishly. "Suppose it's for the best that he's 17 now," she said, trying not to be too disappointed about losing something that neither of them remembered having. "We can just dodge that awkwardness altogether."

In theory, at least.

Lily tried to smile, but she knew it fell short when Tonks mentioned Remus only being seventeen. But at least in this case, she didn't have memories of being married to him, having his child. She wasn't hanging onto stories of their time together but being the only one who knew the stories.

"Hopefully," Lily agreed gently.

Once they arrived at the Headmaster's office, Lily gestured slightly. "Suppose I'll leave you in his capable hands now, but... it was good to meet you. Best of luck," she said sincerely. At least Tonks, like her, had family. Teddy would undoubtedly be pleased to have both of his parents back, even if neither remembered him.
