NARRATIVE | Saying Goodbye

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Star City, California

Before this day, a small number of small memorials have been held -- opportunities for groups like Connor Hawke's students and Roy Harper's old drinking buddies to mourn without intruding on the secrecy of the true funeral service. The brothers lived as heroes when they were young, and they died as heroes when they were old. This is how they should be remembered at their funeral.

The family of Roy Harper and Connor Hawke has been joined by nearly the entire superhero community in the funeral home. Both caskets rest side by side, closed at the request of Oliver Queen. Because the ceremony is private, there are no colorful costumes. Stretching out before the caskets of the deceased is a sea of black with heads awkwardly bobbing on waves as people sit together in mourning. The word of how Roy and Connor die has already circulated, beginning when Siena Harper informed the Justice League and then members of her family in the days leading up to this. Because of this, even some who never really knew either Roy or Connor have come, feeling compelled to come honor the people who died saving their lives.

There is at least one notable absence. Cody Walker, one of Roy Harper's sons, has not come. Some in the family didn't honestly expect him to; while others are honestly surprised he wouldn't have come.

Prior to the service, there was some question about who would be speaking. Many were uncertain whether Ollie could possibly be up to it. )

Lilah Luthor hovers above the building rooftops in her green and purple powersuit. The building directly below her is hers -- after a fashion. The building is nothing. It is an address. It is a front she uses for some of her low key activities. Someone has broken into it this evening. That someone is leaving the building now. This woman wears a long white coat and has no face. The Question. Why would the Question be investigating here? What is the last thing she used this front for?

Ah.

Lilah remembers. She used it as part of a deception to get some research samples from S.T.A.R. Labs. Years ago, there was a pregnancy drug created specifically for Lady Krypton to aid her in carrying hybrid Kryptonian/human offspring safely to term. It's actual effects were inconclusive, but she still wanted the research for her own case. That's what this is all about, isn't it? The Question is following up on the drug -- not trying to find her. That is even more problematic. If the Question connects her to a pregnancy drug for Kryptonian/human hybrids... that leads to a very specific conclusion. She simply isn't ready for Leon to be exposed.

This bodes so poorly for the Question. )

the kent family thanksgiving.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Smallville, Kansas

Clark Kent always hosted the family Thanksgiving on his farm, and this year was no exception. The family gathered at the farm as usual - well, except for Kev who had arrived early - and things proceeded as usual. Chris and Kara didn't talk much, Ari spent the whole time being annoyed by Bria and Kev's tales of adventure, and everyone did their best not to notice the tension. Caitlin was quieter than she usually was, unable to help but compare this Thanksgiving to the one she'd dreamt about weeks ago.

Before they ate, they took a moment to remember Mike, Clark saying a few words while the rest of them bowed their heads. His absence was even more noticable at a time like this, when the family gathered. Part of Caitlin felt other absences even more keenly - her father should be here as well, along with Mike and... his son? She swallowed hard thinking about it, not wanting to let on to the rest of the family that she was upset.

By the end of the meal Caitlin was struggling to keep it together, and after helping with some of the clean-up she finally escaped, flying out to the furthest reaches of the property so she could have some time to herself to put herself back together. Thanksgiving should not be like this.

[ Metropolis, Delaware ]

The Hyperion Bar in Metropolis was bustling tonight, with guests from almost literally all over America. For a girl who had been raised in Metropolis, and hadn't left town to go to college, she knew all kinds of people. Part of it helped that she'd befriended a lot of people at college, and then she had briefly had a very high profile position as the League correspondent. And yes, that is why Green Lantern Danielle Ricker was at her party. She hadn't lost that position because the League had had a problem.

Caitlin, the guest of honour, had been talked into buying a dress she was half-convinced should be a little illegal. A shimmering blue silk dress, it was strapless and hugged every one of her curves, ending somewhere mid thigh. It's probably not too hard to guess who had talked her into that, and it's possible she'd be murdered later on in the evening. She had on a matching simple domino mask, and her hair fell down her back in a cascade of curls.

The drinks at the bar were free - alcohol only available to those with id - and waiters circled around with various kinds of finger food. Caitlin had actually found a decent DJ for the evening - not a usual party DJ, he was the younger brother of a friend of hers from college looking to break into the club scene. Caitlin might have promised him an introduction to one of the entertainment reporters from the Planet in exchange for his services. Jena was keeping a close eye on the underaged kids around - of course, Miss Arielle Kent was instructed to be on her best behavior and of course could be trusted to behave, but you could never be too sure about teenage girls, especially when Tay Lance was also in attendance.

A couple of hours into the night, it's time for the cake. One of those large rectangular cakes that were a requirement at a party this large, it's a vanilla cake with pink and white icing. Clark Kent, proud grandfather, leads the birthday singing, with Caitlin cuddled under one of his arms with a huge grin on his face.

It's a well known fact that once the cake has been served, people can start to leave. Caitlin's parents pack the presents into their car to take home later on, and before they leave Caitlin changes into a hot pink halterneck dress with a ruffled skirt. The night isn't over for the party girl, and she'd drag out a few of her closest friends to continue the party at various bars around town. This is one girl who would be partying all night long.

NARRATIVE | Thanks to the League

Smallville, Kansas -- the Kent family farm

It isn't often the entire Kent/El family gathers together. Despite what a simple matter it is for them to travel, these reunions stay limited to Christmas, Easter and today -- Thanksgiving. This is all thanks to the determination of the head of the family, who refuses to allow the differences between Chris Kent and Kara Zor-El divide the family.

For the most part, Thanksgiving goes on as the typical family get-together. Chris and Kara talk only so far as to trade notes on their responsibilities at their respective fortresses -- Chris as warden of the Phantom Zone and Kara's stewardship of the Bottled City of Kandor. The teen Kryptonians have their stories they want to share with the adults, and Arielle once again feels hers about an armored truck robbery she stopped be overshadowed by Bria and Kev's more fantastic story about saving Kandor from some kind of blob creature.

What makes this Thanksgiving dinner stand out is the announcement coming from Clark and Mike as they tell everyone they're reforming the Justice League. Not only that, but Clark would be handing it over to Mike to lead and not take part in it himself. It would truly be a new Justice League. Arielle particularly loves the news, because it totally kills Bria and Kev's stuff about Kandor. Really, the only person who isn't supportive of the news is Jena, but she chooses to stay quiet.
