Letale Narrator--The Bellum Letale Mod Journal ([info]letalenarrator) wrote in [info]bellumlogs,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Everyone
What: The Final, The Last, The End
Where: Outside Bellum Letale
When: The morning after the masquerade.
Warnings: This is a party post.
Notes: I will not cry I will not cry I will not cry.

The limos pull along the quiet avenue leading to Bellum Letale, and the coming dawn is entirely obscured by midnight's black still. The entourage strongly resembles a funeral, but despite how hard they may look, if the hearse is ahead, the twists and turns of the looming buildings obscure death's coach.

Suddenly, light: but it is not the dawn. It's orange and yellow, a flickering, dangerous light, a candle flame with aspirations to the heavens. It's Bellum Letale. The roof is already consumed, licking heat kindling in the windows of the highest floors and spitting hungry tongues of fire out of the lower exits. The vehicles bearing every resident continue without pause, drawing all nearer, an oil slick puddling at the base of the burning building. The area is still vacant, and a harsh reminder of how the building itself drives off those who take no part in life within its walls.

Before the limousines allow their passengers to alight, there is a massive crash, and the balconies crunch inward within the building's skeleton. More collapsing supports throughout, as levels and walls give way to the heat, and the building goes lame a floor at a time. The locks click, and the doors open, allowing all passengers the freedom of the heat-choked air. Minutes pass as the flames grow more wild and the smoke thickens, until the sound of cracking timber is interrupted by a roar that makes the surviving trees sway and jolts the sewer covers from their beds.

Something pushes through the third floor windows, a limb the size of a redwood that glints of skin or scales. It rakes out, reaching beyond the boundaries of the building into the air--and finding nothing, curls back inward, drawing with it red hot steel beams and raining molten glass and burning splinters down among onlookers. Another earth-shattering below as the creature claws at the night air from successive floors, taking the building down chunk by flaming chunk, until the ruin sinks down into the basement in clouds of debris and choking smoke.

As dawn breaks in spectacular pink and orange rays, the fire is subdued by late-arriving servicemen, and the smell of doused charcoal overtakes all. There is no sign of whatever was within the building as it collapsed, and no witnesses except for those men and women so unfortunate as to be able to hear its death throes--these now homeless residents of Bellum Letale.

The new day breaks, and the smoldering ruins are all that remains. Heaps of brick, fluttering shrouds of burnt material, crushed furniture--and the sturdy stone outline of a stone wishing well, still untouched, buried in the crater of the cataclysm.

[From here]

Once they met back up with the others and made their way outside, Vlad couldn't say he was particularly surprised to find a row of stationary limos waiting for them. Their very presence was far from welcoming, due to their tinted windows and the fact that no amount of knocking or yelling could get a response from whoever was driving them... if they were being driven by humans, that is. It didn't take long for their doors to open, however, and it became clear that they had no other choice but to get inside.

The ride was fairly quiet, as there wasn't very much to say on any side - all their possessions were still back in that storage unit, save for what they'd brought along, and the list of possible options wasn't very long. He'd brought Cain and Abel along in the limo, which he knew probably didn't please everyone, but he wasn't leaving them back there with no food or water. Eventually the car began to slow, and when he caught sight of monstrous flames through the window he immediately knew something wasn't right. As soon as the car stopped he got out, the dogs staying close and growling at the building from behind his legs. All Vlad could do was stare at the scene before him - Bellum was an inferno of growing flames, practically falling apart before his eyes. Then he watched as the inhuman arm swung out, instinctively finding Helena's hand with his own and giving it a squeeze.

It didn't surprise him as much as it should have, that some creature would have been the one to destroy the building once and for all, but once it was over and his home was nothing more than a pile of smoking rubble, he was surprised that it was actually gone. He'd never know why, but all he knew now was that Bellum was gone... and they were free. Dracula had to be gone now, but a small part of him did hope that the vampire had finally returned to his rightful home. Wrenching himself from his thoughts, Vlad turned to regard the others. "Well," he said finally. "I suppose... it's over."

"I have to go." The wistful girl announced; paled. The phrase aimed to no ear in particular died out much like the peppery ashes dirtily coating the ground. Dust settled, abandoned whimpers melodically weaved and bounced, people clung desperately to one another with their eyes brimming in watery questions in search of solid answers; through the now homeless sea of her former neighbors she felt a heavy sympathy, and she couldn't watch it anymore. She grabbed nobody's eyes with her own to punctuate her leave, as this sort of sentiment could break her resolve to flee before dealing with the situation. However, anyone who knew her would catch the sugary-escapism cradled safely within the words like a Botticelli cherub staring up adoringly to its surrogate.

The tone was hurried; she was disoriented, confused. Nothing of the brand shone through on her features as she strolled stiffly away a few paces and paused to her group, save for the dominion of scattered thoughts that had hiked up a wide, clouded glisten in her eyes. She wasn't too sure she was free of Lucy. She felt as if she could still feel, hear, sense her memories, the quiet emphasis of her thoughts, but, that could be due to her imagination, she'd countered, her imagination which was quite vivid, ample, and fragrant.

As she continued to back away, tightening the belt on her jacket, she told them softly. "I'm taking the subway to Manhattan. I'll be at the Imperial Court hotel, upper west side... I know the owners. Anyone wants to share with me just call in a few hours and ask for my room."

The chilling thought of the full moon occurring in less than two weeks startled what seemed a sound plan, but what if they were free? What if she was normal now? She could walk away unworried.

And if she wasn't, well... Manhattan was probably going to have a massacre.

Throughout the silent limo ride, Aiden seethed and thought, but as soon as the building came into his vision and it was on fire, things became far less important. He was out and watching the flames as soon as the tires stopped; he couldn't believe what he was seeing, torn between shock and vague horror and a vindictive glee that the damn thing had finally gotten what it deserved. Even when the inhuman arm lashed out and took down the rest of the building, floor by floor, he only watched with eyes wide and watching, unable to tear them away until there was nothing left but an ash cloud and a pile of rubble.

For once, vengeance was almost fully put out of his mind. Until Lily suddenly spoke, backing away almost frantically, he hadn't even been paying attention to his surroundings (where was he going to go, what was he going to do, who would even be around to know ... ?). With her near-disappearance, though, he cast one last look at the group before following her, hand diving into his bag for his phone.

"Wait." He followed her those few steps away. "I don't have your number ... " That much would be useful, at least; he could keep in touch with her, see where things were going. Where she was going. If the next full moon was inundated into their very bones at this point, rather than just associated with the building. (For now he would leave Lone and Oliver, Vlad and Helena be; Oliver he alerady had contact with, and the others ... well.

Things would go as they willed.)

Helena had been by Vlad’s side in the limo and once he exited she was right there with him to watch the flames. She was thankful for when he grabbed her hand, watching that thing, that arm, whatever it was, rip through the wreckage made her gasp. Bellum never stopped surprising her, even at the very end, but that had been unlike anything she could have ever imagined. As she stood there, watching it burn, she wondered if she were truly free. She couldn’t feel Mina lingering, at least not at the moment, but Lily was announcing she was going and it distracted Helena from really checking.

She followed suit, reaching for Lily to give her a hug but being careful to keep her arms free, so her cousin could reach for Aiden’s phone of course. “I’ll call you, okay?” Her words were soft, not whispering, but close to her ear to be heard over the sound of fire. “I’ll call once we figure out what we’re doing. But we’re all going to be okay.” She gave her another squeeze for good measure. “I promise. This is all over.” Perhaps she was trying to reassure herself as well but it didn’t sound like it. Helena’s words were full of conviction. She had faith.

As she pulled away she gave Aiden a small smile. She wasn’t sure what to say, for all their interactions had been forced on them in one way or another by the building. But he wasn’t a perfect stranger and after a moment she gave him a nod. “Take care, Aiden. If you need anything…” She wasn’t going to presume that he would ever need or want her information, but she cast a quick glance to her cousin, as if to say he could always ask her. Hopefully it wouldn’t come to that, but she still wished him the best and went back to the other two.

Through the crowd she saw a familiar face, possibly one of the last friendly ones she would count. “Samuel,” she breathed quietly as she stopped right by Vlad. Before she could take his hand again, she leaned up and gave him a quick kiss. “I’ll be right back. I just need to say goodbye.” She wondered if Daniel was here too, so Vlad could at least say goodbye to him as well. But they were back in civilization and their phones were working now. If he wasn’t here, they could always find him later. “After that we can go?” She could hardly keep the hope out of her voice. This was what they wanted, what they needed. Only a few minutes to cut the last of the Bellum ties and she would be ready to go.

She leaned around him to give Lone and Oliver a quick nod and a farewell, “Take care.” And then Helena made her way through the rest of the residents to say her last goodbyes.

Just what she was running away from... perhaps it wasn't as simple as she'd thought it would be, to run so she could get herself together, spend time alone immediately to right herself; rehearse the being just fine speech for later. But it'd be dishonest of her to amuse the thought that their interrupting her attempt to flee without the ideal goodbye was unwelcome. Deep down, buried underneath the (near) perfect poker face, she was a little thankful they had roused her from her revery.

"Okay. I love you." was all she'd given her cousin, and although it seemed a small portion of her, it was a heaping mound compared to what she thought she was capable of at the moment. Having taken Aiden's phone from him while the embrace happened and then departed, she moved to stand aside him once Helena had taken her leave. Thinking to herself for a moment how pretty her cousin looked, even with worry knotting her brow. She felt proud that she was her family.

Punching in her number was a little feat in itself, her fingertips were shaky, but it was accomplished, squinting at the screen to review she'd saved it in right. Extracting her own phone was next so that she could offer it to him quietly. She stood a little closer then, like a child trading pokemon cards on the schoolyard in case he needed to know how to use it. There was a lot she wanted to say to him, that much was obvious, but she was biting her lip. Making talk impossible.

Vlad completely ignored Aiden, not particularly caring what he planned on doing next so long as he ended up far away from him. He gave a short nod to both Oliver and Lone before turning to Helena, although he couldn't help but scan for the crowd for any familiar faces of his own. When she mentioned Samuel, he simply nodded - surely she had her own friends to say goodbye to, just as he had his. "Alright. I'm going to try to find Daniel... and after that we can leave. I can easily find us someplace to stay." It was true - it would take little effort at all to secure themselves a place to stay.

Once she left to find Samuel, Vlad turned his attention away from the others and began searching the crowd himself. He had Daniel's number just in case, but it would be nice to see him one last time - and perhaps Rosalie too. They were really the only friends he had left aside from Max, but he doubted that the latter would be here.

There were a lot of things he could say, that he wanted to say - to everyone involved, especially. But even as Helena smiled at him and said if you ever need anything, all he could do was manage a half-smile in return, grateful for her still being alive, still being unharmed, still being ... well, he bit back what he meant to say, what part of him wanted. He gave her the half-smile and watched her give her goodbyes ... watched her disappear. Of course, he did it out of the corner of his eye, fighting a grimace, but unable, as ever, to say a single word. He turned his attention back to Lily as soon as she handed him back his phone, to trade with hers.

"I'll call you later," Aiden said as he entered his number and handed it back. "Once I've figured out where I'm going." He glanced around her and caught sight of Joanie, of other people he knew very vaguely or a little better. All alive. Shocked, maybe slightly drunk, but ... very much alive. "Oh, and you can keep the book, if you want." Part of him was wondering: should he go back home, maybe? But ... no, he couldn't. He was here for a reason. He had to stay here, in this area.

Or wherever it became necessary to go.

(He didn't look at Vlad.)

Once he'd returned her phone, Aiden gave Lily a brief smile before letting her go where she wanted to and turning to move down the sidewalk, his eyes continually drawn to the ruined remains of the place he wasn't quite sure had ever been his home.

After Hannah walked away, Joanie found herself actively fighting tears. Scrubbing furiously at her eyes, she let out a low huff as she tried to contain herself. Not here, not now. This wasn't even the worst of it, yet. Hannah was great, but they'd only known each other for a short while. What was she going to do if she saw Russell? Or-

"Aiden!" Just as she began to search, she caught a glimpse of the very person her thoughts had wandered to. Eyes wide, she began to run forward. He was walking away, passing the rubble that they had both once lived in. "Aiden, wait!"

Heart racing as she started running in a spurt, she finally slowed to a halt as she reached his side. "Wait, wait," she repeated, pushing a clump of still-auburn hair from her face as she held a hand out in front of him, intending to stop his pace. "Don't leave just yet."

At Joanie's yell, Aiden immediately turned, coming to a halt as she stumbled toward him at her own halt. He'd wondered if he could talk to her before they left, but she'd seemed occupied - other people, other friends ... he couldn't say he wasn't glad she stopped him, though. Hand still wrapped around his phone, he leaned back slightly as she held him bafck with her own hand.

"All right," he said, slightly nonplussed. "I'm here. Are you all right? Nothing happened at the ball or afterward to you, did it?" She looked all right, if a little unhappy, but he could see why. She'd had a lot more friends here than he had. A lot more put into it. Aiden wasn't all that put out about the damn thing collapsing into a mess, but he could see why people would be.

Well. Probably.

After he stopped, she pulled her hand back, looking up at him with bloodshot eyes. The last hour in the mysterious limo had sobered her significantly, though she was wearing her night of binging clearly on her face. Her skin was chalky, eyes streaked with red, and her cheeks had a patchy quality that betrayed the fact that she was still trying not to cry.

"Define 'nothing,'" she said half-heartedly. "Did I get stabbed? No. So I guess I made it out okay. How about you?" She hesitated, fresh from her goodbye to Hannah. Though she wanted to make smalltalk, she knew that it would be impossible. The thing that had brought them together, their fucked-up little apartment home, was gone. So where did that leave them? Still friends? Nearly strangers? She chewed on her lower lip. "You got somewhere to go?"

"I'm fine." A little seething, deep inside, but otherwise he was still sane and unharmed. He glanced across the crowd and the building again, feeling a faint pang of ... something. "Chances are I'll find a hotel, for a day or two. I might head back to Boston, actually. It's been a while." Home, for at least a month or so.

Though he wondered if he shouldn't just sell half his stuff and stay here in New York, moving from hotel to hotel as he needed to. There had to be some places willing to keep him for a week or two. Otherwise, he supposed, he could find a nice cardboard box in a damp alleyway somewhere.

"What about you?" Concern for someone who'd been one of the relatively few people he considered a friend won out over general apathy and slight shock. Besides, she really didn't look all that good; it was probably better to be halfway decent than act like normal. Now, was that Van Helsing or himself making that suggestion, he wondered?

Whenever somebody said they were "fine," they weren't. Fine wasn't a word that fine people used - it was a word used by people attempting to seem fine. It defined itself in the positive and negative, being very problematic in the process. Luckily, Joanie wasn't in the state of mind to dog him for a real response. She was just glad to see that he wasn't bleeding.

"Oh," she replied at his plan, nodding slightly. "That...sounds pretty good." And expensive. Then again, she had little respect for hotels in general - they just struck her as so seedy, even when they were being used for non-seedy things.

The fact that Aiden was actually asking about her plans without a detectable hint of sarcasm should have knocked her on her ass. Instead, she took it in stride - shock still claimed her. "I've got a cousin in the city," she said, tucking strands of hair behind her ears. "Luther, Sam and I are going to go...and count on my ability to convince him to let us crash for a day or two." She paused. "If you don't want to spend the money on a hotel, you can come with us." Despite the situation, she offered a thin smile. "Filling Harry's apartment with strange men will be my payback for that time he hung all my bras out the window when we were teenagers."

Maybe it was shock, finally setting in. Maybe it was just how ridiculous this entire thing was. Regardless, when Joanie made her offer for him to come with her and the rest of them, and the particular reason why, he actually laughed. Too much stress, he'd tell himself later, even if it was an actually funny reason to go with her. It wasn't a long laugh, but it was one nonetheless. A surprise to anyone who'd known him for more than about an hour.

"I'm sure he'll appreciate it," Aiden said with a half-grin, trying (but failing) to imagine how her cousin would react. "I suppose if you've got room ... I could stay for a little while." Just until he could figure out where to go next, and if his parents would even be willing to let their wayward, antisocial son back into the house (part of him knew they would, though probably only into the basement). "I ... thanks. For the offer." Not awkward at all, he was sure. "A group can probably figure out where the hell we're all going afterward better than someone alone."

The fact that he was laughing almost knocked her over. At first, she began to worry about hysteria. After all, that happened when you were in shock. Her eyes widened, but she cracked a greater smile when she realized that he wasn't losing his mind - not yet. He was just responding to something funny, like a normal human being.

Fancy that.

"Yeah, he's going to be thrilled." But really, how could he turn them away? She was his cousin. Bra shenanigans aside, they had always got along alright when she spent her summers at his house. At least, well enough to be able to pull the "family" card now. "But good," she said with a nod. "Someone might end up in the bathtub, but...we'll figure it out."

After a moment's pause, she smiled up at him. "It's not a problem. I'm your friend. Giving you a nice bathtub to sleep in is my job."

Well, he couldn't say it would be the first time. Bathtubs weren't all that uncomfortable, if you had a couple of pillows for the edges. If you didn't was when things got awkwardly painful. Aiden shut his eyes briefly at the memory, wondering why now of all times was when he was recalling this sort of thing.

"How exciting," he said dryly, though it didn't hold his usual attitude. "Does he really have that little floor space? Either way, I'll be out as soon as I can. It's only a few hours from here to Boston." But he didn't want to try landing a bus ticket or driving right now. Not on top of all this business. If they didn't already trust him to survive most of Europe on his own, Aiden wondered if his parents wouldn't insist he start living closer to home.

She snorted. "I don't know, I've never seen his apartment. It'll be fine." That she could say convincingly. Harry would put them up for at least one night. And her aunt and uncle were only a few hours away if the apartment really was too small to offer floor space for four.

As he said he'd be moving on soon, she nodded. "That's fine. Just don't feel like you have to go quickly." She offered him a light smile. "I'll always reserve a piece of floor or a bathtub in your honor."

"I'm so glad to hear that." It was nice to know that someone would save him a cold, hard, linoleum tile or two to sleep on if he ever needed to crash and burn at their house. "It depends on where I end up heading. If I stay in New York, I might be dragging along after you for a few extra days." And he was sure the thought was entirely comforting to her, knowing that the king of sarcasm would be following her heels.

Aiden's eyes were drawn again to the wreckage of the building. At this point, there were no more flames, just smoke and ash and embers. His smile faded as he stared at it. How did you feel about your home coming to a crashing halt like that? It would make for an interesting story later, he was sure, but still. It had moved all their stuff out - it had known. Was it murder or suicide?

Why was he still thinking about this?

"Are you heading out soon, then?" he asked to distract himself, shifting the shoulderbag to a more comfortable spot.

"Okay," she said with a simple nod. She knew he was being sarcastic, but didn't have the brainpower to do anything about it. She liked to think that a part of him did appreciate it, because they were friends despite the fact that they were constantly ripping at one another. Or maybe not. Right now, she didn't even care. She was still too mixed around.

"Yeah," she said, glancing over to the spot where she, Luther, and Sam had exited their limo. Pointing to the spot, she looked up at Aiden. "Meet us there in..." She glanced down at her watch. "Fifteen minutes. Luther and Sam have cars, and I've got a motorcycle. I'll lead us to Harry's and hopefully we'll be able to find some parking. If you've got a car, you can follow along. If not, you can ride with one of us. Okay?"

"I'll have to ride with one of them. Never been able to get my hands on a car." Nor had he wanted to. There was just too much trouble when you traveled as often as Aiden did, and besides, that was what walking and the bus system was for. Getting mugged was apparently not on his list of worries. As for the ride itself ... he wasn't going to say a motorcycle wasn't interesting to him, but the idea of riding with someone else on it did put him off it a little. He had the distinct impression that he'd have to ride behind her.

One more glance at the building, mouth twisted in a slight grimace at what it had become.

"I'll be there." Fifteen minutes was enough time to call the company and tell them why the next couple of chapters was delayed, enough time to at least tell his parents he needed to talk to them later. It was going to be an interesting few weeks ahead - not just for him, but for everyone here, on the street, outside the demolished building.

"Okay then," she said with a nod. "They won't mind." And they wouldn't, if they knew what was good for them.

At his confirmation, she nodded again. "Alright. See you in a few." She still had to find Russell. After pausing a moment, she reached out and gave his upper arm, just above the elbow, a light squeeze. It was akin to a half-hug, a small gesture that didn't need embellishing.

Releasing his arm, she gave him a small smile before turning to stalk the crowd again.
