WHO: Helena and Sam
WHAT: Stuff! Meeting again, advice, maybe a cake. Who knows!
WHERE: Elevator and then somewhere
WHEN: Sometime before Full Moon
WARNINGS: None! I think.

Helena's days were passing by quietly and that was just how she liked them. After the last full moon came and went, and Vlad's birthday a particular success, the rest of her days fell into to a simple pattern. To some it might have been boring, her time spent resting, painting, and redecorating, but she wasn't about to complain. She had spent too long waiting for the next strange event to happen, and then the next, and then some. She welcomed a stretch of boring days with arms wide open.

She had become too accustomed to the quiet life, and when she came back from an afternoon out she didn't think twice about entering the elevator. The fifth floor button was pressed and she began to rummage through her purse, trying to find her keys. When her fingers curled around the cold metal she looked up just in time to watch the elevator pass her floor without a second thought.

"Oh come on," she sighed, closing her eyes for a moment and leaning against the back wall. She briefly wondered where it would take her. When it thought to give her problems, the elevator often lingered along the third floor. Why it continued upward was beyond her but she knew better than to try to understand why things happened around here. She barely noticed it when the elevator slowed to a stop and her eyes fluttered open just as the doors slid apart.

Coincidentally, Sam was just on his way down because he needed to find a store around here that sold cat toys - he was tired of Zeph sitting on his head at 3:30 AM because he thought it was Time to Play. The thing must be bored, or maybe really just was an asshole like most cats. And Joanie seemed to be taking multiple road trips as of late, leaving dutiful boyfriend Sam as the cat-sitter, so he was going to take it upon himself to wean that cat off of the theatrics.

He wasn't sure why he decided to take the elevator. The stairs were easier, naturally. But he only had to wait a few light years before the lift arrived and the doors opened. He didn't see anyone coming out so he just went right on in.

Sam noticed he wasn't alone. "Oh, sorry...were you getting out?" He waited to see which floor she was going to before he pushed any buttons. Not like the elevator would actually move anyway, he was almost sure of it. It seemed to like being annoying and forcing people to experience togetherness while stuck between floors.

Then he realized who he was in the elevator with - delayed reaction, apparently. "Helena?! Wow...fancy meeting you here."

She straightened up and blinked in sudden confusion as the man stepped into the elevator with her, and it also took her a moment to see who it was. She laughed softly to herself, the realization hitting her just a split second it dawned on him. “Good to see you too, Samuel.” There was a moment of uncertainty, whether to hug or to give a more familiar greeting, but she hadn’t seen him in so long that she settled for a simple but still friendly little wave. “Which floor are you going to? If you’re off to five, you’re out of luck. Unless it’s only me the elevator dislikes.”

Most people didn't call him Samuel, but he really didn't mind. It was what he used in his professional dealings anyway, and the last time he had seen Helena had been at a quasi-professional event.

"I was just going down to the lobby," he said with a smile, shrugging. "I'm on a mission for cat toys. It's a last ditch effort before the thing gets sold to a Chinese restaurant. But if you're getting off at five, I'll just walk the rest of the way down." Then he realized something - perhaps it hadn't been a quasi-professional event that he last saw her.

"You were in Russia, right? I saw you the last night, in the woods." It had been hard to believe that the woman who jumped into fire and carried another person like a sack of potatoes was the same Helena he met at the charity function, but he had recognized her. "You're...okay and everything?"

“Cat toys?” she mused softly, but held her tongue and the rest of her questions as he continued on. He was heading to the lobby so she pressed the button, the L lighting up effortlessly. On a whim she pressed the button for 5 but still, no amount of pushing would get it to light up. She pressed 4, and 6, and still nothing. Yes, it was clear, the elevator disliked her. “It looks like I’m heading down to the lobby with you.” Walking up five flights wouldn’t be so bad.

His question caught her offguard and she frowned slightly. “Yes, I was in Russia.” She wracked her brain to think of where Sam had been. He saw her in the forest but then again she hadn’t been hiding very well. Or rather, Mina hadn’t. She had taken it upon herself to be a guard for the girls and spent all night pacing in the snow. “I’m fine, yes. Doing much better these days than right after. Thank you.” She surveyed him once more and he looked much like how she remembered him being. How she couldn’t have recognized him didn’t seem right to her. So she had to ask, “ I don’t think I saw you back there, though. You were in the woods too?”

He actually laughed a little at the elevator's persnickety attitude. "This thing is such a bitch," he scoffed, seeing if he had better luck. Sam pushed the button for floor five and it lit up - who knew if it would actually stop there, however. The elevator may not have appreciated the insult. "Or, well, if it doesn't stop there you can always come help me pick out cat toys?" He was mostly kidding, as Helena probably had better things to do.

He nodded at her explanation that she was doing better - she appeared to be physically fine, and he was glad no permanent injury had occurred. "Good to hear. Uh..." Oh well, it's not like the tiger was much of a secret. "You might have seen Shere Khan. The tiger? That was me." Whoo hoo! Surprise?

She raised a careful eyebrow as the button lit up for him. Lucky, although she too was wondering if it would hold and stop on 5. She smirked softly and gave him a slight shrug. She hadn’t much planned for the rest of her day and the elevator thought it was exceptionally important that she meet up with Sam today. A little pet toy shopping wouldn’t hurt her. “I never took you for a cat person.” More exotic animals came to mind when she thought of him, but that was purely because of the last time they ran into each other.

The tiger was certainly no secret and in the days since their trip to Russia she had wondered who it had been. Knowing the answer now made her laugh, light and surprised and without a hint of malice, one hand coming up to shield her mouth so as not to offend. “That was you? Now I remember. I saw you leap over the fire and put out the flames in the snow.” She shook her head at the memory and again at the building, which never ceased to up the ante it seemed. “I suppose it was going to happen sooner or later, the Jungle Book. It was always a favorite of mine, but I never thought I’d come to know Shere Kahn.” Then again she never thought she’d be a vampiric Mina Harker roaming the halls every full moon. “Are you okay? If I had known you were there I would’ve checked up on your welfare much sooner.”

Well, it was good to know someone liked The Jungle Book. He sure as fuck didn't. "I never thought I'd be Shere Khan," Sam allowed, shrugging one shoulder in a 'I'm a killer tiger, what can you do?' sort of expression. "He's not exactly the most pleasant thing to share a headspace with," he admitted. "But yeah, I'm fine. He's pretty tough, so I didn't get banged up in the brawl very badly."

For fuck's sake, this stupid elevator! He didn't even know what floor they were on now, or if it was even moving. "I'm not a cat person, really, but I thought I'd leave a scratching post out for the tiger next full moon so he'd be entertained." That was clearly a joke, though it was tempting to do that - but then Sam would return to find his apartment destroyed, and everyone dead. No such luck. "Or actually, I'm cat-sitting. And we're involved in an unspoken war."

“Not many of us have particularly pleasant counterparts to be with,” she replied delicately. Mina wasn’t as bad as some but sometimes she weighed upon Helena. And of course the nature of what the woman was didn’t help either of them. It wasn’t necessarily worse than being a man eating tiger, but she understood how frustrating it could be. “I’m glad you made it out alright, though. Not a lot of us did.”

The thought Shere Khan with scratching post pulled another laugh from her. “I think you might be better off with a toy on a string and mounting it on the wall. Make sure it’s shaped like a person. ” She turned her face up to watch their descent and while they were going down, it seemed like they were slower than usual. They had just passed 6 but there was no sign of slowing down for 5. A quick glance down at the number pad showed the light had flickered off the fifth floor button one more. Lobby, it was then. “Cat-sitting? For who?” Shere Kahn at war with a tiny little cat? There was a joke somewhere there.

"Yeah, it...wasn't exactly the best time ever for anyone," Sam said hastily, rubbing the back of his neck. The entire trip probably shaved fifty years off of his life or something. "Which one are you?" he asked, referring to her fable. It was an odd question, but probably standard procedure around a place like this.

Wow, the elevator really had it out for Helena today it seemed. Sam could almost hear the thing laughing maniacally as it passed the fifth floor. "My girlfriend's on a road trip," he explained. "I think you know Joanie, right?" They were almost burned at the stake together, at least, so he was going to assume they were acquainted. "Anyway, her cat seems to think it's funny to smother me at ungodly hours because he wants attention. I figure if I get him something to do, he'll let me sleep."

The question wasn’t that much of an odd one, and she was more surprised that he didn’t know. Or perhaps he was being polite. Still, she nervously tucked her hair behind her ear as she admitted, “Mina Harker.” A beat. “The vampire.” She never would get used to saying it.

Her expression practically lit up at the mention of Joanie, letting out a soft “Oh!” in both recognition and surprise. He was dating Joanie? How cute! She refrained from saying it but it was clear from her expression she was thinking it. “Cats are funny like that but a few toys certainly wouldn’t hurt.” They might not work all the time but Helena remained optimistic, for his sake. “Is Joanie coming back soon? Or will this standoff with the cat continue for much longer?

"Ah, I see." That wasn't very surprising. Sam figured she was...something that went above and beyond the realm of normal human strength, given her actions. He had just wanted to confirm to be sure. "It's kind of weird introducing yourself like that, isn't it?" he chuckled. "I'm still not really used to it."

And then he blushed - he could feel it, damnit, and he hadn't meant to but it happened anyway. "She'll be back in a couple of days," he said, then realized something. "Except there's the full moon, oh fuck, and she's with that Les Miserables assclown - " Wow, language. There was a lady present, Sam! He clammed up. "...sorry."

“I don’t think it’s ever something one should get used to,” she laughed along with him. “It gets a little better though.” Once someone accepted the fact they were sometimes fictional, it was a lot easier to do things like joke and talk about their other personas. “One day you’ll be able to say ‘Samuel Madin, Tiger’ without cracking a smile.”

The blush only made her knowing grin grow wider but still she refused to say anything. It probably made it worse but that was half the point. She spied another floor passing them by out of the corner of her eye. Still slow but at least it wasn't stopping.

She didn’t mind the language so much as she was suddenly caught up with concern. “What’s Joanie’s tale?” She had seen her do a number of things back in Russia and had a few ideas, but she didn’t know exactly who Joanie would turn into during the full moon. That would make all the difference on whether Helena could relax or if she’d turn her worry up to eleven. She liked Joanie, even with the very little they interacted, and the last thing she’d ever wish on her was to try and handle the moon outside of Bellum. “Who’s the one from Les Miserables?” It would take a lot more for her to repeat assclown aloud.

"Hey, maybe so," Sam grinned, cheerful about his lot as usual. Eh, so his fable counterpart was the villain! In The Jungle Book! That was perfectly normal, right? "I could have it printed on business cards, maybe. And you can just say you're Helena Kelly Mina Harker Vampire, all in one name."

He tried to get the blush down to a dull roar. Man, women always had a way of knowing these things! But he pressed on. "Oh, she's...the Wicked Witch. And not Elphaba. I made that mistake before." After getting screeched at by the nameless witch, he would just call her 'ma'am' from now on, despite how it got on her nerves. "She's best friends with Javert, even though he wants all witches and warlocks and ghouls and goblins and anyone who sneaked an outside beverage into a movie theatre to die in a fire. I mean, I just don't understand!"

Helena let out a quick laugh that verged on a little on unladylike. "That's a terrible mouthful. I'll stick to one name at a time, thank you. Some might even be able to get away with being called with what they are. You're lucky, I suppose. 'Tiger' at least is a more acceptable nickname than 'Vampire. "

She was surprised to hear that Joanie was the Wicked Witch. She hadn't looked green at the time but Russia hadn't been one of their usual transformation times, even if it was strange to think there was a Usual and an Unusual time to be fictional. Her brow furrowed even deeper as Sam said she was friends with Javert. How that had happened was a little beyond her grasp.

"Surely he's not that bad? When he's not Javert, I mean." She had a feeling she knew who he was talking about and she used to see him on the forums quite a bit. He did seem to be quite the stickler for rules but still, he couldn't be like that all the time. Could he? "We all have a fair amount of similarities with our characters but we have more than enough differences." Some more than others, of course, but differences still remained.

"Vampires get a bad rap. So do man-eating tigers, so I can sympathize," he said. Literature wasn't exactly Sam's strong suit - he was more scientific, obviously - but he had read Bram Stoker's Dracula for school and remembered that Mina was one of the protagonists. "You get to be the heroine though, so that's kind of cool. Wasn't Mina kind of like a double agent? Since she used the mind doohickey to track down Dracula. Maybe you should have a spy name."

However, Javert was not a protagonist, and he pulled a face. "Luther's alright," Sam conceded. He could admit to that, at least - even if he just didn't understand his motives for which criminal acts to pursue and which ones to just let fall by the wayside. "But she locks herself in with Javert every full moon because she's afraid he'll try to kill himself, since apparently he's a dipshit and doesn't realize that if Luther's body dies, so will he." The whole thing really bothered him, and it wasn't because he was trying to be an overprotective ass - he genuinely did not want Joanie to get hurt. "I can't stand it. But it's difficult because, well, the tiger wants to maul everyone so it's not like I'd be much help there. And now they're out in the real world so you can understand my frustration."

“Something like that,” she conceded with a slight shrug. Mina had been a hero in a way, but only to aid the men leading the charge. Stoker hadn’t let her do much more than read Dracula’s mind and memorize train schedules. More modern adaptations let her shed her the repressive Victorian notions but Helena didn’t have those living in her head. Still, it was amusing to pretend she could kick ass and take names. “And what would constitute as a spy name? Or should I just go by some a number? A double oh? Or I guess I could go by an initial as well.”

The frown never left her face the more she learned about Joanie and Luther. But she was a clever girl and Luther seemed like capable enough. Whatever decision they made shouldn’t be so bad. “Well, I’m sure she’ll be able to hold her own. I mean, Javert is difficult but he’s just a man. She at least has abilities at her disposal. I’m sure she can handle him and protect herself at the same time.” She hope she was reassuring. She knew what it was like. During the full moon she was constantly battling against the thirst and as much as she wanted to help or protect everyone she loved, she had her hands full with herself. “Does Joanie maintain her… I guess, self during the moon? Or is she easily distracted by girls with little dogs?” There was a slight teasing edge in her question but it was still a serious one. “If she can keep her wits about her then she’s better off than most of us.”

"It's a complex process. Like deciding your pirate name or your viking name. You'd probably be...let's see..." He rubbed his chin, as if in deep thought and contemplation. "Electra Fingercuffs."

At the question about dog distraction, Sam laughed a little. "No, I think she's mostly herself. But - " hurjshjfutyikaf!!!! Maybe he was being stupid. Yet? The idiot had tried to stab her - multiple times. How could that possibly be alright? "I know, I'm just a big caveman. It still makes me want to...I don't know. Go with her to Antarctica for a night."

Another laugh and she shook her head. “Who needs an online name generator when you’re around? But now I’m curious as to what your name would be. So what if Khan is a villain? That just makes you another double agent.” He didn’t seem to have much in common with his fictional counterpart. Clearly he was like many of them: a good guy in disguise.

Hearing admit that he wanted to whisk Joanie away made Helena’s all knowing smirk reappear once more. “I think it’s very sweet that you want to protect her. If Joanie knows that you would want nothing more than to protect her – if only you didn’t turn into a tiger once a month – then that’s all that really matters. It’s the thought that counts the most around here. As long as she keeps focused, and knows what Javert is capable of, then she should be able to remain a step ahead of him.” Helena didn’t know Luther at all, and her knowledge of Javert was minimal at best, but she saw Joanie handle herself pretty well back in Russia. Sure, she got a little carried away at the end, but it showed nothing but how much power could wield. Compared to an angry peasant mob, one dogged detective should be a lot easier to handle.

Sam didn't really believe he had much in common with Shere Khan either - perhaps more than he would have liked to admit, if one were to dissect their personalities and get down to the very core, but overall, he just wanted to be able to co-exist (sort of) without them hating each other. "I guess you're right," he agreed with a lopsided grin. "I'd probably be..." A pause for more contemplation. "Tiger Deathbird. Although that's sort of a weird mix of animals, isn't it?"

No, not the smirk again! Gah. He suddenly became very interested in the elevator's wall. "Yeah, she knows...do you really think it's sweet? I didn't want to come across as some demanding asshole."

The elevator reached the lobby but before the doors opened, it went back up again - clearly taunting them both. Sam pushed the fifth floor button again and it lit up, so maybe Helena could get where she needed to be. "This thing is not just a bitch, it's demonic," he noted. "But yeah, enough about me! How have you been? What have you been up to?"

His answer was a sort of pained grimace and a nod. “The tiger would be the death of the bird, but that’s hardly a proper name.” She pursued her lips together for a moment as she contemplated what it could be and when nothing good came to mind, she shook her head. “Isn’t there a more formal process for this? First pet name with a childhood home street address?” Another shake of her head and a slight, dismissive gesture with her hand. “Really, just add ‘Danger’ as your middle name and you’d be right as rain.”

Sam should have really tried harder not to play into Helena’s hand. The more he pretended that he wasn’t made of feelings, the more knowing her smirk became. “No! You’re not…” There was a momentary fumble as she tried to avoid calling anyone an asshole. “It is sweet. We live in a very dangerous environment, moreso than most people. There’s little wrong with wanting to make sure she’s alright. I’m sure you’re not demanding at all.” While she stood behind all of her reassurances, she did throw in his words again, just to make sure they were on the same page. Trying to make sure his girlfriend was safe was one thing. Actually demanding things of her she wanted to something else was an entirely different matter of course. She liked to think they weren’t talking about something that extreme but she wasn’t about to pull it off the table until she had confirmation.

“Positively evil,” she agreed with an incredulous laugh. Would they ever be able to get to their destinations? The company was good, and the conversation was great, but eventually they would have to leave this elevator. His question made her straighten up slightly, putting her on the spot, and she tried to think of what she had been doing lately. “Oh, nothing really.” Nothing besides time traveling to Russia. “A bit of painting here and there. My cousin recently moved into the building so I’ve been spending some time with her.” Moving made her remember something from a while back and she clapped her hands together quietly before pressing them to her lips. “Goodness, I owe you a cake, don’t I?”

"That's porn star name, Electra," Sam laughed. "The method, I mean. So now you have to share your porn star name too."

He attempted to confirm Helena's theory that no, he wasn't a demanding, overprotective bag of cock - but for someone who had only dated on a somewhat superficial level prior to this, someone who might have fallen under the 'love 'em and leave 'em type,' it was difficult to express his 'feelings.'. "Um..." Well, that was a brilliant start. "No, no, I'm really into independence and equality and not...ruining the relationship by being a fucking idiot. You know?" He was such a man sometimes, but really was kind of gobsmacked over Joanie, which he hadn't predicted at all. "I didn't expect it to happen," he said, shaking his head in disbelief. "I guess it just sort of...does anyway."

At the mention of cake he smiled, surprised that she'd remember. "You do," he confirmed. "I don't think we can be friends anymore unless I get a cake." The elevator stopped at floor five, and the doors opened - finally, after successfully being a douche. "I'm kidding, of course. You probably have stuff to do. Though I am curious about what you've been painting."

Helena laughed although there was a tinge of pink to her cheeks when he pointed out her error. She thought of the naming convention and replied, “May Orange Grove,” before wrinkling her nose. “That sounds more like a weekend getaway.” Although really the argument could be made that the same could be said about a porn star. “Your turn, Tiger. Let’s hear it.”

His missteps made her face fall slightly but she patiently waited for him to properly explain himself. He didn’t quite recover to the level she had put him on, but Helena was nothing if not forgiving. “Just… if you can’t be delicate,” and so very few men could, “be honest and completely so. Not just how you’re feeling but why. When in doubt, apologize. And remember that in the end, you can’t make anyone do anything. Advice, suggestions, maybe a plea if you’re really at your wit’s end but people will do what they want in the end. We just have to accept these things about the people we lo—like and stick with them through it all. Hopefully their decision will prove fine in the end and if it doesn’t, just pick them right back up. She doesn’t seem like the type who wants to be coddled, so give her a helping hand but set her on her own two feet again. And it’s best to keep the I-told-you-so’s to an absolute minimum.” She hoped she recovered from her own slipup quickly enough. She felt like she was running through her abbreviated list of advice but she didn’t know Joanie, or Samuel for that matter, well enough to suggest anything more detailed.

She was incredibly surprised when the doors did open and she moved to step out before it could change it’s mind. “A promise is a promise although I have to say, I did just move out into an apartment of my own. Soon it’ll be your turn to give me a cake. And you’re always welcome to see what I’m working on. They’re not particularly fantastic but you know what they say about practice.” Helena let her hand stay pressed upon the door to keep it open as she turned back to him once more. “Are you sure you want to risk the elevator’s wrath once more? Walking down five flights isn’t so bad.” One last chance at an exit before she pulled her hand away.

"May Orange Grove? Interesting." Sam held back any quips about cultivating her orange grove and such. Hey hey! "Mine would be...oh man. I can't even remember the first street I lived on but I'll give it a shot. Jerry Cotton Bluff Corner." He winced. "That's terrible."

He was surprised when the doors opened too, but it meant a relief from Helena looking at him like he had six heads. Yes, he needed guidance and help with womenfolk on occasion! Most men did! Because he just did not get their logic (or lack thereof) sometimes. "That's good advice," he said with a grin. "I definitely don't want to tell anyone who their friends should be." He just didn't want any friends to try and stab his lady love, and really, Sam didn't think that was too much to ask. "I guess I was just trying to understand the thought process behind it all, but what you said makes a lot of sense. So thanks. It's good to get a woman's perspective on the intricate workings of the female mind."

He waited for her to exit - nope, no walking down here! "I'm good," Sam promised. "And be careful what you wish for about that cake of mine. You'll run out of nice things to say at that point. But I can try! Practice makes close to perfect."

It was terrible, and Helena pulled her lips together quickly and tightly before letting out another unbecoming laugh. “Rabbit?” she asked, for pet names with cotton always made her think of bunnies. “Unless you lived on a place called Cotton Bluff.”

Maybe not six heads, but certainly at least two heads. Helena’s advice to him would’ve changed if he had let it slip that Joanie was in serious danger of stabbing. Sure, she knew Javert was a capable detective and he could hurt people should he want to, but Helena assumed that he was more bark than bite, maybe a degree or two more severe than Luther and the things she had heard and assumed about him. As far as she could tell, Sam was just a concerned boyfriend, perhaps overly so, who could do with a bit of reassuring and a friendly reminder that chivalry wasn’t dead, it just needed a bit of tweaking. She sincerely doubted that she was of any real help to Sam but it was kind of him to thank her anyways. “Each woman’s different, so I might be completely off base. But if I haven’t helped your chances then hopefully I haven’t hurt them either.”

She grinned and pulled her hand back, giving him a farewell wave as the doors closed. “I suggest you start practicing, then. Before you give me a cake that kills.”

"I think the street was Cotton Bluff," Sam said, but he couldn't really remember - they had moved so many times it was hard to keep track of in his head. "Jerry was my pet fish, who died because I tried to take him for a walk."

And then...now it was all going to come out. Sorry, Helena! "I'm sure you haven't hurt my chances. But I think it's really ridiculous that he tried to kill her multiple tiiiiiiii - " That was all said in a rush, so he could get it in before the doors closed - like some epic parting words - but then he realized that the doors had just re-opened anyway. Now he was getting out.

"I hate this fucking elevator."

“Poor Jerry,” was her only reply. She tried to keep a straight face but the mental image made her lips curve into a grin.

Helena had just been ready to head down the hall, her back halfway turned, when she heard his last words, her jaw dropping at a key point and making her spin around to face him again. Forget the elevator. That was the least of their problems.

“What do you mean he’s already tried to kill her?” How could he have neglected this very important piece of information?

"I thought you knew!" Sam replied, sounding surprised. He resisted the urge to kick the elevator doors as they shut behind him, but he instead broke off into a casual stride down the hall. Everything was under control! "Seriously, Helena, I really thought you knew what a fucking psychopath Javert is. He was banned from the safe room because of it and he got into a scuffle with some other girl who stabbed him." He didn't know who that was, but he was going to give her a damn medal.

Actually, he found this conversation sort of...amusing because he thought Helena knew what the hell he was even ranting about. "Wow. Miscommunication there."

“Complete misfire,” she muttered under her breath, fingers pinching the bridge of her nose as she realized yes, this was actually her fault. “I wasn’t aware he was actually banned from the safe room. I was under the impression that he was taking the initiative and not going there himself. I’m technically not banned from the safe room - no one's ever told me I couldn't - but I don’t go there because I might attack people inside. It’s called taking proactive measures; I assumed he was doing them.” There went Helena again, assuming things. She wasn’t sure what sort of face she would make if Sam reminded her about what they said about assumptions but she was sure it was going to be an unhappy one.

Her hands pressed up against her cheeks as she tried to make sense of this new information. She liked to think that her earlier advice still stood. If Joanie felt she could handle Javert then she should be allowed to do so. But murderous tendencies were not something to be trifled with and she certainly wouldn’t want her loved ones anywhere near someone who had them. She had been fortunate enough that her friends were always with someone who could protect them, or that they properly armed themselves. But that never did completely wash away her worries for them every full moon. “So he’s tried before to attack her and she still stays in the room with him?”

No, Sam would not tell her about assuming and assholes - after all, he had assumed that she knew about what he had just mentioned, and she had been right before about people not liking to hear 'I told you so' or anything similar. "Luther told me that Javert has been 'deemed too dangerous and cannot be locked up.' I don't know who deemed that, but I'm guessing it wasn't entirely him," he said. And that went back to how he thought most people knew who the 'dangerous' tales were. He was surprised he hadn't been put on that list yet. But there were people who guarded the safe room. Perhaps it was them who made that list.

And he believed what Helena had said still had merit too; she was correct about that too, of course. "Yeah, yes, that, all of that, locks herself in after hiding anything that could be used as a weapon," Sam replied, rubbing his forehead. "She goes on road trips with him to South Carolina. I'm sorry, I definitely think what you said earlier makes sense, overall, in the general scheme of relationships. But I guess you just know better how I feel about it now."

Helena wasn't sure who had thought Javert was too dangerous but she had a few ideas in mind. She had been on the fence about them for quite some time, what with their penchant of taking matters into their own hands and asking for forgiveness later. If she was right about her assumptions, she'd have to thank them for having the foresight this time. "But why not just lock him up? I mean, by himself?" If he was so dangerous was it really necessary for Joanie to even be in the room?

She did understand how he was feeling although she wasn't sure if she felt better because of it. She doubted he did either. "But he's fine when he's not Javert, right? He's not... you know..." There was a slight shrug and incline of her head, politely trying not to say 'psycho' and hoping he'd catch her drift. "She should be fine on these road trips of theirs?" Javert and the Wicked Witch. That was certainly one of the stranger friendships she had seen around the building.

"That's what I suggested." Sam was glad he wasn't the only one who thought that was a good idea. Was it really that hard to come to that conclusion? Why was this such a problem for both Luther and Joanie? That was what he didn't get. "I told her to just lock him in and take any would-be weapons out. But I don't get why that wasn't thought of before either."

Oh, Sam caught the drift alright. "He's fine except for when he tells me his counterpart's too psycho to be in a room with people and then two seconds later tells me not to worry, he's locking himself in with my girlfriend on suicide watch. Who does that??!" Sam pressed his thumb and forefinger into the corner of his eyes, attempting to quell a headache. He had a bad temper and he didn't want to lose it. "So in theory, she'll be fine but he's one big walking dictionary definition of drama so who knows."

He was not going to go apeshit and destroy everything like the tiger would have done. No. He was better than that. "Right, so...you didn't happen to paint any calming beach landscapes or anything did you?"

She was sure there was an angle they were missing. There must be a reason why Joanie was taking such a hands on approach to Javert’s confinement but for the life of her, Helena couldn’t think of any. It all sounded irrational and the only explanation that could come was that she didn’t want her friend to be alone. That wasn’t the most logical reasoning but Helena could understand it. She still didn’t like it though, and as Sam’s features became progressively more heated and animated hers was settling into a expression of firm disapproval. "Did she give you a reason for why she's taking this all on herself?"

She motioned for him to follow her back to her apartment, since clearly he needed to calm down and the elevator wasn’t about to let him out of the building. “Come on. I’ve got fruit in a bowl too.” Really, Helena’s paintings were varied which he would see once he stepped inside. Landscapes, both real and those she had spied in her dreams here at Bellum, fruit in bowls just as she said, a couple of more abstract pieces and a few attempts at portraits. She had been busy during her recuperation after Russia. By the door, not yet hung on the wall was a long frame with three mini portraits inside: one of her, one of Vlad, and one of them together, done in a different style as it was a gift and not her own creation.

“Do you want something to drink?” she said once she stepped through the door. The weather was warming so she had some iced tea from earlier. There was always, of course, the option for hot tea which she always found calming. Or something stronger if he really wanted but really, it wasn’t even five o’clock yet.

Besides that Joanie was stubborn, and fiercely determined when it came to those she held close to her, Sam really couldn't think of a reason either - and the aforementioned reasons certainly weren't logical to him. He was a pragmatic person and would do what needed to be done, and if locking his BFF in a room by himself was in fact the best solution for all parties, he would do it. But Joanie still seemed hesitant.

"Just that they're really good friends and she can't leave him alone," Sam shrugged. "But she's scared of Javert, even though that's not enough to give up the stubborn reasoning."

He walked with Helena back to her apartment, grateful that she was letting him vent. It was good of her to listen. "Wow, these are great," he said as he checked out the various paintings. "I love artistic people, because I'm just...not. At all." Noticing the one of her and Vlad, he tilted his head, studying the piece. "How long have you been together?"

At the drink question, he smiled good-naturedly. "Sure. Whatever you recommend, Doctor. If the spy thing doesn't work out, you could be a shrink."

Friends or not, Helena still didn’t like it. She could understand Joanie’s view and fully supported going the distance for your friends. But why this man even remotely conceded that this was a good idea was beyond her. He was deemed a danger; he should take all steps to make sure he wasn’t anywhere near anyone else. Helena could only shake her head. “If she’s scared of him then there needs to be another way of doing this. That’s unacceptable.”

“Thank you,” said modestly. She didn’t bother to hide that she was flattered by his praise but she wasn’t reveling in it either. She knew she wasn’t a master, but that didn’t make her any less proud of the work she had done. She hadn’t noticed what he was looking at until his question and smiled fondly when she saw him looking at her new painting. “Oh well…” That was a tricky question. “Officially, a few months. A little before Easter was when…” Was when she left her husband. “Was when we made it more official. But I would say we’ve been... We started getting close late last year.” She suddenly couldn’t remember if he had ever met Peter, but she had been married at the fundraiser she met Samuel at, and that was much earlier than October. “How long have you and Joanie been together?” It was high time she wasn’t the only one answering uncomfortable relationship questions.

She gave a soft laugh as she made her way to her kitchen. Iced tea it was then. “Your faith in my spy skills is reassuring, let me tell you. I’ll leave the head exams to the professionals. Last I checked they didn’t get fun names or cool gadgets.”

Sam was definitely going to have to learn how to not bake like shit, just for Helena - because she was being so nice and understanding. And logical. It was most appreciated. "Oh, um..." He tried to think of how long he and Joanie had been together - it seemed like forever; the trek to Russia helped with that. "Almost two months," he said. "It didn't take me very long to..." To turn into a lovestruck idiot. "...be ensnared by her feminine charms? You know how it goes. I'm sure you've got that one," he nodded toward the painting. "Pretty ensnared."

He had to agree - shrinks really didn't get cool names. Sometimes cool gadgets? "Definitely not as cool as an exploding pen or something like that," he laughed. "Do you ever sell your art? I bet you'd be successful with it."

"Something like that," she laughed, both at the thought of her ensnaring Vlad and how clearly and quickly Samuel was falling for Joanie. It was the return of the smirk but at least this time she at least had the decency to bring him a beverage. "People tend to come together stronger than they probably would have when under strange and stressful circumstances. And those kind of situations we have in spades around here. Two month is plenty time to be ensnared," she reassured him as she handed him a glass of iced tea.

She looked over at her pieces as she mulled over his question, the surprise evident all across her features. "Think so? Honestly, I haven't given it much thought. I can't really imagine someone liking them enough to buy any of them." She painted because she enjoyed it and while everyone entertained ideas of doing what they loved for a living, it still hadn't quite registered that she might give it a whirl. "How's work for you? Not too affected by the strange goings-on here, I hope?"

"Thanks," he said as he took the glass of tea, but not just for that - for ensuring him that two months was plenty of time to be gobsmacked and ensnared. "But that's true. When you're pushed to the limit, over and over again, all the true colors seem to come out."

Sam nodded, clearly confident in Helena's abilities to sell her artwork if she chose to. "Definitely. You have a lot of talent and you seem to like to paint. Why not make some money? It's a win-win situation." And to him, enjoying what you did for a living was one of the most important things. "Work's okay." He pulled a face. "Much more difficult with Shere Khan around. He hates zoos, cages, and people. And me. So it's a pretty odd conflict of interest. Once a month is not enough for him to come out and play."

“No trouble at all,” she replied easily, in regards to both the drink and her reassurances. She certainly didn't mind.

He had a point and she surveyed her work for a long moment as she took another sip of her drink. “I’ll look into it,” she conceded, but her tone suggested it wasn’t just idle placating. She had been having trouble finding employment. Why not give it a try. If it worked she could paint forever, and what could be more wonderful than that?

“Ah, I can see why he’d hate it.” Conflict of interest was putting it very mildly. “Once a month is all get. If we had our way they wouldn’t even have that.” Although Mina would give anything to not come out during the full moon. “How bad was he? During Russia?” A beat before she asked, “Are you ready for the moon?” They had been talking about Javert and safety and safe rooms but she wondered how he was planning to prepare for the tiger.

"Good," he smiled. "Let me know when you're in business. I probably need something on my wall besides the shitty paint."

Ah, Russia. Shere Khan had such a fantastic time massacring people. The tiger was all about the hunt, and the kill - he liked the game. He liked revenge. "Well, for the first part he was spouting pompous tirades in my head but then when I let him out so he could hunt and kill a deer for Joanie - " And that had certainly been an experience to watch. "...then he was better. After that, well..." Sam shook his head. "I don't believe anyone who says animals don't hold grudges. He does. So let's just say that killing all of those peasants isn't something he feels guilty for."

Not that Sam really felt much guilt either. They all would have croaked if it hadn't been for some of the more...bloodthirsty tales. "I have no idea," he confessed, about the full moon. "I think I'm going to just attempt to lock him in. He'll destroy my apartment but it's better than him being let out. I might head toward a more woodsy area and let him hunt. I don't know. Honestly, one of the worst parts is that when I change back..." He gestured to himself. "Not a stitch of clothing! At least most everyone else is human." And it hurt. He had a high pain threshold but damn. Here's to hoping that got easier for him.

She laughed. “Had I known the market was this easy I would’ve started long ago. I’ll paint you whatever you’d like.”

“I’m sure he’s not your average animal,” she said easily, although her smile was small as they talked about peasant killing and guilt, if there was any. She was fine with reassuring everyone that what their tales did wasn’t their fault; it was a truth after all, but she still had a hard time making that distinction with herself. She still had lingering remorse over the people Mina and them had killed the second moon, and that was months ago. The peasants back in Russia remained a sore spot.

But he was distracting her with talk of changing back without clothes and she had to let out another laugh. It made sense but it was still an amusing mental image. “Most is the key word there.” She didn’t turn into anything human, after all. “We’ve had a few animals though in the building. The Big Bad Wolf.” She hadn’t seen him of course, she had heard. “And there’s the Beast on the roof.” She idly wondered how Daniel would be doing now that Ella had moved away. The Beast kept to himself but that was because Beauty was there too. “I’ve heard there’s a frog on one of the upper floors.” Surely there were more animals than this, and she pursued her lips together as she tried to remember. “We had a lion a while back. I think they moved out, though. I haven’t heard of anyone running into a lion for quite some time now.” The way she listed them off, it sounded like there was a regular menagerie in the building every full moon.

“But locking up is a good idea. If there was a better method then you’d do it, but the fact that you know what can happen and are taking precautions against it is very good.” It spoke well for his character, which was more than she could say for that Luther fellow who let Joanie stay well within danger's reach. “If you need anything beforehand.... I’m not sure what I could help with,” it wasn’t like she had animal traps lying around or anything of that sort, “I’d be glad to help. I’d say I could try to check up on him during, but we’re trying to see if we can keep Mina indoors too.” Trying was the key word there.

"I've met the Beast. He's a friendly fellow," Sam chuckled. "There's a frog, really? That's...interesting. I knew of the wolf too. But a frog must be difficult to manage during the full moon. Where could you even go?" Perhaps whomever that was let the amphibian loose on a lily pad or some such.

He didn't really want to lock the tiger up as it was kind of a lose-lose situation but it was worth a shot. "I just can't go down to the safe room and put him in a cage. He'd be a complete nightmare to deal with." Not to mention that he'd very likely break the cage or - if they were constructed by some kind of magic - turn it off completely and thus everyone would break out.

"But hey, if you ever need any help too?" Sam added. "I'm not sure what you could use the tiger for but he's got a few tricks up his sleeve. Coat? Fur? Whatever." Like making faces fall off, or perhaps even eating them.

She have a half snort at the Beast being called friendly and she loudly jingled the ice in glass to cover up the noise. “As far as I know of there is a frog. The Frog Prince?” That was what he was listed as on the last fables list. Really though, that meant he could also be a man though. She wondered if he went around asking for kisses. “The pool?” Would frogs even want the pool?

She shook her head at the thought of putting Shere Khan in the saferoom. “I’m not sure about the cages, but it doesn’t seem like the best answer. It just makes everyone around the cage a sitting target.” Then again, wasn’t everyone a sitting target just by being in the room and the deadly tales still roaming the halls?

“Thanks for the offer but I’m not sure what a tiger could do. The Beast could even keep us in line.” Then again, it had been purely because the Beast was distracted. Vlad bore marks the first night they all turned. Maybe there was something to say about brute strength. “But he’s more than welcome to try and keep Mina in line. The Beast said we smelled like dead things.” She wrinkled her nose at the description but she supposed it wasn’t wrong. “So he should be able to find her with relative ease.” Then again, he shouldn’t be able to find her. She should be constantly locked up. “But we’ll see how the moon goes.”

"The Frog Prince? Wow. So many people are royal. And I get stuck with a villain. Pretty awesome," he stated, but with playful sarcasm. There was a reason for most everything,he supposed. What this was, he had yet to figure out - but he was trying. Sam didn't like unsolved mysteries.

The safe room didn't really make much sense to him either. Shouldn't there be two rooms or something? "Why have cages for people who are just hanging out? It's not like the 'dangerous' tales would willingly go down there," he said, taking a sip of tea. "Otherwise you'd be putting dangerous tales in with people who are just sitting there. Is this backwards to you or am I missing something? But ah, well.." He shrugged. "Let me know how it goes for you? Maybe we can work something out."

Helena was of the mind that things did happen for a reason, but she could understand his curiosity about it. She had long since accepted her lot and didn't give too much mind to why anymore. "Compared to frogs? Tigers are pretty awesome, with or without a crown."

She shook her head. "No, it's a bit..." She hesitated to call it ill planned, for she certainly couldn't come up with a better solution. "It could have been better, but at least it's something. I suppose all we can do is operate on a trial and error basis, until we find something that works. If anything, at least seeing the cages can put people's minds at ease. At least, the ones who would be hiding in the safe room." Projecting the aura that they had taken safety precautions would at least keep them calm through the night.

"We'll see how this one pans out. If it's bad, we can try something next month. But here's to hoping we won't need to keep each other in line." She raised her glass in a little toast and then took another sip of her iced tea, hoping for all the best.
