Who: Sam and Archer
What: Drinking
Where: The Juke Joint
When: June 23rd at 8 o'clock
Warnings: So very much whining. Archer is emo and proves to us all why scientists aren't allowed to talk to women.

After Isobel's impromptu visit, Archer was more than ready to meet Sam at the bar. He looked it up online, got directions, printed the directions, drew little notes on the directions, and obsessed over memorizing the directions. Essentially, he was distracting himself. He was trying to come up with every conceivable method possible to avoid having to think about the tears on Isobel's face or the panic that he had felt when she fainted. Every little stupid thing he could think of was a great barrier against the feelings he had to confront.

When it came time to meet Sam, he dressed simply in a plain T-shirt and jeans. Out of his lab coat and button-down shirts, he looked almost normal. He still had a gaunt look about him, and there were several conspicuous red marks on the inside of his left elbow where the nurses in the hospital had tried many times over to insert an IV. The shirt he wore left his elbow bare, showing the marks to the world, but he couldn't be bothered to care.

It was warm enough to not require a jacket, and so he simply locked his apartment and left, wearing just his shirt and pants for the walk to the dive bar. He repeated the directions in his head, fastidiously counting steps and land marks as if that would amount to something. Finally, he reached the horrid little place and went inside.

As it was a weekday, it wasn't crowded. He took a seat at a table, waving the waitress away and mentioning that he was waiting for someone first. Folding his hands, he looked down at the table, waiting for Sam to arrive.

As Archer was well on his way to being quite drunk, Sam's laughter made him laugh. He wound down as Sam did, unsure of why they were laughing until an explanation was given. "Ah," he said. "That is unfortunate. Being in conflict with your tale can be frustrating," he said with a nod. "When Griffin and I disagree it...is almost painful, really." He rubbed his forehead.

Sam really had no idea why he was laughing either but that could have been the alcohol talking. Or he had stepped away from the situation and realized that once a month he was doomed to transform into a tiger. Hilarious! "It's pretty painful," he agreed. And he was sure it would get worse. "I honestly don't know how this could have happened." Of all the possible fables, he got stuck with Shere Khan. "Just do me a favor and don't try to come after him for samples." Jay would become an appetizer, even though the tiger probably wouldn't find his bony self very satisfying.

He shrugged. "Nobody knows how or why our fables are chosen," he said, pouring himself another shot. The bottle was nearly empty now, which was probably a good thing. "Simply that they are." That sounded much deeper than it really was. At the caution to not attempt to take samples, he frowned. "Why not?" he asked. "During the full moon events, I am rendered permanently invisible. He wouldn't be able to see me."

"Yeah...I guess that's true. Maybe it's random?" Sam hoped so, anyway. Because he didn't see how he and Shere Khan were alike at all, or perhaps it would become clearer over time but now? No way. At the invisibility comment, he frowned, rubbing his forehead with his fingertips. For some reason he thought of that day when Jasper demonstrated and how, all of a sudden, limbs started reappearing. If that happened again? He couldn't be sure, he didn't know why it happened, but what if it did? "I just...wouldn't try," Sam warned. "He's dangerous. And I'd be kind of pissed off if the next day I realized my fable had mauled you."

He shrugged. "Perhaps, though I believe there to be some logic, of course." After all, his assignment of Griffin couldn't have been chance. There was a great deal they shared in common, too much to brush off as "random noise." As Sam continued to caution him, the scientist sighed in resignation. "Alright, alright," he said, holding both hands up. "I promise not to follow your fable for samples. Though if he is dangerous...should we do something come the next full moon?"

Oh shit, the next full moon. Sam hadn't even thought about that. The humans could all hunker down and take shelter and have cute little parties, but what was he supposed to do with a tiger? Get out of the building? A tiger running around Manhattan was completely inconspicuous, oh sure. "Shit, the full moon," he groaned, covering his face with his hands. "I don't know. What can we do? He'll try to eat everyone. It's Shere Khan, by the way," he added. "Don't know if you're familiar with The Jungle Book or not."

Literature was lost on Archer. "I'm not," he said. "However. Last month, there was a great deal of noise on my floor. I recalled reading on the forums that a safe room was being built to contain fables that were dangerous or people who wanted to be protected from them. It should still be in the backlogs, if you wanted to see who to talk to." He had vaguely considered having Griffin locked away, but then realized that he didn't want the entire building to know. If somebody was hurt, that would be unfortunate, but it would be a sacrifice in the name of anonymity. "I believe that the next full moon will be occurring shortly..." he mused, sipping at his last shot.

Sam massaged his temples, a headache suddenly appearing. The phrase 'locked away' sort of sealed the deal for him right there. No fucking way would that tiger allow himself to be kept in a cage, not even if the bars were made of plutonium. And he didn't really want everyone to know that he was a danger to humankind just yet anyway. "Yeah...yeah, maybe..." he said tiredly, knocking back the rest of the alcohol. "I sort of don't want everyone to know." It was stupid, he knew, but why should he announce that he was dangerous? "I'll figure something out," Sam promised, pushing away the completely nauseous feeling that overcame him - not due to the alcohol either.

"Ah. I understand." He nodded, finishing the last shot and pushing the empty glass over to sit beside the empty bottle. It was amazing how they had finished it. "We will devise a way," he said, pointing a finger into the air. "And nobody will be hurt." He paused. "Nobody that matters, at least." He laughed, finding this funny for some unknown reason. "Isobel's fable stays out of the way, so she will be safe. And I trust both myself and Griffin to avoid your Shere Khan."

"Who is Isobel's fable?" Sam asked, looking up. He had been previously staring at the table, as if the answers would magically appear there. Stupid table. "Or does she not want anyone to know? And thanks, staying away from Shere Khan is probably in everyone's best interests. Do you know what the safe room is like? Like how can it keep people contained?"

"Rapunzel," he said. "I don't think she has expressed concern either way. And during the last full moon event, we were all trapped in our apartments and communicated via forums. Rapunzel spoke over it several times, so I believe it to be common knowledge now." He nodded. "And I'm not sure. I know it's on the first floor, as I heard a great deal of noise when it was being constructed." He wrinkled his nose. "Also, there were individuals carrying large amounts of garbage to the first floor during it all." He shook his head. "I'm not sure about it; as I said, I had no interest in it."

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair. That was all Sam knew of the story. "So she's kind of like a princess? That makes sense," he grinned. Isobel definitely gave off beautiful storybook princess vibes. "The first floor. Garbage? Wha - " Oh great. Joanie probably turned garbage into steel bars, so it must be some kind of magical safe room. Now Sam definitely had his doubts about keeping the tiger locked up. "Well, we'll see," he shrugged. "What's the worst that could happen? ...don't answer that."

"Doesn't it?" he asked, wry with amusement. At the question of garbage, he shrugged. "I don't claim to understand it. I simply report what I noticed. It was terribly loud for three days, and then there was silence. I'm not sure what all they did." And really, he didn't want to know. The residents of this building were all ridiculous, over-emotional wretches. Though Sam told him not to answer the question, he smiled. "Shere Khan could tear through the building and kill us all, leaving you alone in a pool of my blood." Against his better judgment, he burst out laughing.

"Oh...I'm drunk..."

Sam laughed too, at the answer but mostly at Jasper's current state of inebriation. "Good one!" He executed the fake gun-point gesture, a symbol of manliness and camaraderie. Oh, har har har! Death and destruction! A tiger mauling everyone and ripping apart their flesh! That was some funny shit right there. "Yeah, I'd say you're pretty smashed, my friend," he observed.

Leaning forward against the table, he smoothed both hands over his hair. "Yes. I agree. Because I just said that." He paused, wrinkling his brow and pointing hazily at Sam. "Perhaps we should head back to the building. Because I cannot have any more. I would." He snorted, covering his face with one hand. "I would be dead in the morning." Again, he laughed.

"Yeah, we may as well," Sam agreed. They should head back before the full moon and then the tiger attacked, and it was a sad scene where pathetic humans failed and more rocks fell and everyone died. "Wow, this was fun! Let's get drunk again sometime!"

Leaning against the table, he slowly stood, gesturing for the waitress to come over. "Yes, it was," he said in response to Sam. They split the bill evenly and then left, Archer wobbling and swaying as he burst out the doors and onto the street. "I-I have to say, I have never done this before." He laughed, looking over at Sam. "Got drunk like this, never. Not with somebody outside of my family." The birth of his brother's son had been an occasion involving a lot of booze, but they didn't need to get into that.

The pain in Sam's ribs, and on his back, had faded thanks to the numbing effects of the alcohol - and he was fairly aware of his surroundings, even after consuming half a bottle of vodka in one sitting. "Hey, hey? You know. It's cool," he said seriously, holding Archer steady as they walked, his arm around the man's shoulders like they were going to break out into song. "Because this is what we do. We as men. We get drunk, talk about women, and then get drunk some more."

The arm around his shoulders was strange, but appreciated. He balanced himself delicately against Sam, his tiny frame making him very little weight at all against the other man. At his comment on what men did, he laughed. "Yes, I suppose you're right!" he replied, glancing up at him. "I-I must apologize, I think I did most of the talking tonight. But next time. You can talk. About women. And I will listen."

It was either hold the man steady or let him fall into the street, and friends did not let friends fall into the street while drunk! ...unless there was a video camera handy. But Sam did not have one on him at this current time. Damn it all. He dragged Archer by the arm, like a sack of potatoes, into the building when they reached the lobby. Making sure he didn't fall was one thing, but he wasn't going to carry this dude bridal style up the stairs. No thanks.

"Oh, trust me I will talk," he slurred, then snorted a laugh. "Hopefully you would have worked out all the issues with Ra...puh?" He couldn't say the word for some reason. "That girl! With the! With the hair."

When they reached the building, Archer leaned against the banister of the stairs. "Okay!" he replied, laughing. "You can talk, and then we can talk, and...there will be talking...and...women." He rubbed his temples, unsure of where he was going with this. "Thank you," he said. "I will talk to her. Tomorrow. Not today, because I'm drunk." Snorting, he took one step up the stairs. "I'm on the first floor, so I'm going this way. I will see you later!" Waving, he began to weave his way up the stairs to his floor.
