Who: Everyone!
What: Transformation Plot Post
Where: All over.
When: Moonrise on the 28th.
Warnings: All kinds, I expect.

The moon slipped up past the horizon full, round, and white. Its effects had been predicted, though perhaps not fully believed by the residents of the building.

Moonlight streamed through the windows of the building, washing the city in pale light. For the tenants of Bellum Letale, where ever they were, scattered in the night, it had a tangible effect.

Change rippled through the building, much as it had over a month before. But this was not simply a twitch in the fabric of things, gone in the blink of an eye. It was a rolling change, gradual as the moonrise, tangible, and, in some cases, likely terrifying in its inexorability. People became what they were, what they ought to have been, and what they weren't.

The moon was up, and trouble was about to run high in Bellum.

[Notes: Remember that the events of last month still apply-I.E, those who became vampires will be vampires when they take on their fable form, the Frog Prince will still be human after being turned back last plot, etc. Whether the fables are aware a month has passed since they were last around is up to the players. This log posted with the anon account so that the mods do not wake up tomorrow with 100 notifications in their gmail. Go forth and plot!]

Nina had made sure that she wasn't working on the day of the full moon, just in case. It was much better to be prepared and employed than blow her cover by stabbing another person. She was asleep when the change happened and she didn't notice quite notice it when she woke up because Eponine did not find unusual the patched and ragged dress she was now wearing or the way it made the cool spring evening seem more chilly. She scrabbled through Nina's kitchen for a while, finding and devouring some bread. There were no barricades to build tonight; that had been completed. Since she had no knowledge of an impending attack, Eponine felt safe as she headed out of the apartment with the intention of finding Marius to warn him about that inspector who had been lurking around.

The building was slightly more familiar now, even if it was still unlike anything she had ever seen in Paris. She crept catlike down the stairs, on alert for soldiers. Nina's memories had told her that the inspector was traveling, but she made Eponine do a weapons check just in case. A knife had been folded into the waistband in her skirt, near a single-shot pistol. An old blade that had been fashioned into a shiv was in a pocket. Nina scoffed at all three and wanted to go back to her apartment and arm up for real, but Eponine paid her no attention. What she had was fine for defensive purposes, so it worked for her. She had no real desire to rob or kill anyone and she didn't understand or care for Nina's compulsion to be armed at all times.

Luther was the first thing she saw once she had reached the lobby and it made her tense and crouch into the shadows again. He was walking, although she felt a savage sort of smugness at the cane, and his other hand was positioned in a way that let Nina's experienced eyes know that there was a gun. Not good. She crept along the edge of the room, hidden by the long layered shadows cast by the mix of night and dim lobby and full moon, eying him warily.

With the general smell in the building, it was difficult to place them. Just inside the doorway, Javert remained still trying to place them. Some he recognized and could even place, with a name and face. Others were more confusing, for Luther as well as Javert. His mouth turned downwards at the realization, then stepped forward with his pistol at the ready.

One of the smells stood out more than others - stronger, more prominent and edging closer. The hand on his cane tightened and refusing to look in the direction of the criminal, Javert edged towards the elevator. He didn't plan on heading up it but it would work as a good starting point. He'd know if someone were to approach from behind, while keeping a focus on Eponine. Turning his back to her wasn't the best of moves either - but there was a suspicion that she wouldn't attack if she could get away. There was a hint of respect for that, twinged with the wound in his leg. Not his of course - Luther's which didn't make sense. Didn't the man know his priorities?

But he slowly turned with his back to the elevator, sniffing a bit louder than intended. He looked in the opposite direction of where she was, face composed as if in thought. There was a brief moment before he spun, firing a shot to the left of where she was. There was no intent to kill or hurt her; simply to chase her back where she belonged.

Luther started to walk away, which was just fine, especially since Nina had noticed the tensing and knew that he sensed something. Her hand went to her own gun, although she would prefer not to shoot since it would take time to reload and time was invaluable during a firefight, even when one was unable to be seen. He stopped and turned and sniffed and she tensed, lean lines of muscle rising up under her skin, poised to move. Eponine didn't buy that expression for a second.

Then he spun and she ducked even before the shot was fired, Nina having realized immediately that he was drawing his weapon. Eponine hissed at him from her crouched position, even when the bullet went far to her right. Taking careful aim, she shot at the very tip of his cane near the floor, ignoring Nina's desire to just blow his brains out and get it over with. Eponine was not the seasoned killer that her hostess was and she had no desire to become one. The rebellion, at least, was for a cause, even if she was mostly involved for Marius. As soon as the shot left the gun, she moved, silently creeping amongst the shadows to settle several yards away and reload.

The hiss was enough warning for him. He moved out of the way, ducking his head to hide his face. He wasn't sure on how well she could see in the dark, even if she could hide in it. The less of his face that showed, the better. A large step towards the right managed to let the cane escape the shot.

He paused for the briefest of moments, realizing she'd have to reload. His own pistol was tucked away as he ran forward, cane swinging upwards. Javert's usual stick hadn't arrived, but the cane would work just as well. Intending to hit her hands and knock the gun out of the way, he tried to estimate her height from before.

Eponine slid away easily, laughing silently as he lunged at a spot a good foot above where her head had been. Although she had reloaded up the pistol, it went back into her skirt as she pulled the shiv from her pocket, liking her chances with it better now that they were close. If it came to hand to hand, Nina was confident enough in her advantage, even though she was much smaller than he. Padding backwards, well out of arms reach, she waited to see if he would actually hit the wall or if he would stop when his hands didn't find their quarry.

The cane connected with air and Javert let Luther's reflexes come into play. A flick of the wrist and his momentum let him move to the side, but not hit the wall. He remained in a ready stance, shoulder-width apart and hands out. The cane was still in his left hand as he tried to figure out where she was. Cat and Mouse was beginning to annoy him - he didn't need to liken Eponine to Jean Valjean, did he?

"And how's Marius?" Javert asked in French. Luther's knowledge of the book was useful. Once he was back in Paris, if he remembered this, he'd use it for his job. "He's still obsessed with Cosette, isn't he?" He wanted her to slip and emotions were always the easiest way to it.

Her teeth clenched. Bâtard. Nina scolded her; emotions had no place in a fight. It didn't matter right now. "He's well," she hissed, timing it so that the words came out right before she moved again. "They're in love, oui." She had gotten used to that part at least. And soon it wouldn't matter at all, she knew. After the battle, they were going to be together forever. She moved again, sliding further away, keeping to the walls and the shadows always.

"Don't you get tired, chasing such a good man as Valjean?" Another few steps away from where she had spoken. Eponine liked Valjean. He didn't want Eponine and Marius to be together any more than she did.

Her smell and voice moved farther away. Javert advanced, cane at the ready. It took him a moment to piece together who the other half of they was - as far as Luther had read, Cosette's feelings were a mystery. It wasn't surprising, as much as unknown. "Delightful." His tone showed that it was anything but.

Though it was his own tactic, Javert paused in his advancement. "He is not a good man. Perhaps in your addled, thieving brain you've mixed up the meaning of what makes a good man." He stepped forward, moving to his left in a casual move. There was a space between him and the wall to his right and it was hope that she'd head that way. The cane swung out on his left, not intentionally intending to hit her at the shoulders but he was guessing on the distance after all.

Eponine stopped responding. Nina didn't like that she was rising to his bait and she was relying very heavily on Nina at the moment. Even living on the streets and surviving however she could did not compare to the senses and instincts of the assassin whose body she was currently sharing. For each step he took forward, she moved two back on her smaller legs, weaving back and forth a little, but always staying within arms length of the wall.

She was still slightly hunched, so the cane swung up closer to her head and she was forced to block it with the wrist of the hand not clutching the shiv, catching at it and pushing when she did so, in an attempt to knock him off balance. Then, just as he had wanted, she darted through the space between him and the wall, hoping to get back to the stairs. Best not to visit Marius tonight. Just in case Javert tried something, Nina made Eponine hold the shiv out to the side he was on in a way that if he tried to move any closer to her, he was going to step right into it. The cane, she wasn't very worried about since it had swung from the other side and would probably involve more twisting to get around to hit her than would allow him to stay balanced, but she kept her head down anyway. Nina wasn't taking chances and she was good at this. She would never have lasted this long otherwise. She made sure Eponine didn't turn her back either, keeping it protected and to the wall as she side-scrambled past him.

With his legs wide apart and the knees bent, he was able to absorb the weight from when she pushed him. Javert gripped the cane with his free hand, using both to ram it sideways to his right. In the light and in another situation the movement might have looked like a dance move in the more risque corners of the city (Paris, of course). The cane connected with the wall, in the hope of trapping her, if she hadn't moved by already. Something knicked his hand, but once again he ignored the pain. He wasn't going to let her get away this time.

"Why do you always run?"

His push caught the edge of her back and Eponine tumbled. Nina's basic instincts took over then, falling as well as any trained fighter would and then rolling out of harm's way, springing back up on her feet once she was several feet away and then backing up even further, towards the stairs. Neither girl chose to respond to the question as she felt the stairs at her back and waited to see if he would follow, which would be unfortunate. The stairs were easier to defend though, and Nina could easily use that to her advantage.

A hint of a smile crossed his face as he felt the impact. Though it cost him a moment, he moved the cane back to one hand before taking off up the stairs. They were more lit, after all.

Instead of retreating, Eponine stayed near the bottom and drew her knife, ready to use it. It caught the light for a split second, giving him a slight warning before the source disappeared again and Eponine was forced to move just a little, to distance herself from the spot that the knife had been revealed. If Javert kept coming, there was going to be trouble.

As she moved, he shadowed her. The cane was tossed to his right hand where he held it up as a guard against the knife. The stinging in his hand made sense now, but as it didn't hurt too much, he refused to look down. It would give Eponine an advantage he couldn't afford to give her. His left hand moved to a pocket, searching for a knife to combat hers.

Nina was very quickly losing any respect she had had for this man. Whatever skills he had, he was countering with his stupidity. Although Eponine just wanted to get out and get to somewhere safe, Nina was gearing up for a fight and she couldn't understand why he was continuing to come after her. She was higher and armed and he couldn't see her, although he obviously could tell where she was, which Nina suspected had to do with the sniffing.

She made sure that she was out of range of that cane before there was the soft click of her gun. "Do not move," she warned him levelly. "Do not go for your gun. The girl can tell and I will shoot." The gun was aimed straight at his nose, although he wouldn't be able to tell that. She had a new cartridge in between her teeth, ready to immediately reload, and although the knife had been tucked back away, the shiv was still gripped in her free hand. Eponine didn't want to shoot. She wanted to be left alone. She'd do it in an instant though, and she kept a careful watch on Luther, finger pressed against the trigger, poised for any sudden moves he might try to make.

He had taken one step forward before the sound of the gun. Luther's instincts were better than Javert's, but he remained still regardless. Debating the odds and what he could do led to the simple decision of watching and waiting.

She could see in the dark and be invisible. Luther was more concerned with this than Javert, muttering in the back of his mind about echolocation, a blanket, or the light switch. Javert chose to ignore him. There was only so much of the man that he could take. Even if they shared this body and had similar goals, there was an irritation about being too similar. He wanted to be himself so that he could do his job properly.

His hand moved from his pocket, remaining in the air. "You wouldn't want to do that."

Eponine didn't bother asking why. Who knew why law enforcement acted like they did sometimes? She kept the gun level, repeating coolly and firmly, "try me." She could stay here all night if she had to, and she would shoot if he moved. Eponine valued her safety above keeping her hands clean and if he continued to try to catch her, she would do exactly what she had to. Her death would be on her own terms and she refused to be caught.

Following the trail of stairs led her lower and lower into the building that was a castle and yet, wasn't. It was getting harder, too, with every step, to remember what the name was she wanted to remember -- some kind of flower -- and she kept thinking of herself as Marian. The Maid. It only got less and less insulting, too, thinking of herself as a maid.

She was stuck in her thoughts as she made her way down the stairs when the sight of the man stilled her. There was something in his posture that gave her fear and she gasped without meaning to.

Javert shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He wasn't nervous, but he wanted to be in a position to move, once he could. It was casual, not forward at all and his eyes narrowed at her. "You'll gain nothing-"

And then his eyes fell on the woman. Her clothing was odd, but he refused to be distracted by that. A civilian walking into this would only get hurt; something he couldn't allow to happen.

Still in French, not thinking to switch, Luther barked, "Stop."

Eponine glanced over the new arrival quickly. She didn't seem to be dangerous in the least, which was good, although not necessarily correct. The dress was pretty and she looked at it a little wistfully, remembering not-so-long-ago when she had had such pretty things, before they had lost the inn. Through her appraisal, she kept silent, but drifted a little closer to the woman. Let Luther try to explain to the woman the position he was in, but at least if he attacked now, it would seem like he was attacking her and not Eponine.

The man's accent was abominable, but Marian understood his command and she obeyed, as she was used to. But the man's clothing confused her: he didn't dress as a courtier or a squire, and he clearly wasn't a noble. So she drew herself up -- even though she was shaking inside -- and said in her practiced (albeit historical) French, as coldly as she could manage: "Who are you to order me about? I'm the Maid Marian, ward of the King."

It was a gamble to announce her value; the man in front of her could easy hold her for ransom. But the flash of panic she saw made her think the threat of the King's rage would be enough to dissuade him from hurting her.

He blinked at her accent for a moment. Even when passing the highest of stations, he hadn't heard someone speak like that. But Maid Marian rang a bell in Luther's mind. Javert had to remind himself of the whole confusion with being 'fables' - even if he felt that his life wasn't any part of a book.

"Inspector Javert," he said simply. "Beside you is a common criminal. I'd advise you to keep still before you get hurt, Mademoiselle."

There was a brief moment before he stepped forward, hand out-stretched. "She's no part of this-" he warned Eponine.

Mademoiselle Marian's French was strange and had an accent that Eponine could identify as slightly English from all her years of seeing travelers at the inn. Being a ward of the king wasn't about to help her, what with the rising rebellion, but Eponine had no intention of hurting the woman unless Javert started after her again. She kept quiet, hoping that Javert would appear insane, and sneaked a little closer, fairly confident that this one could not detect her.

Marian rolled the word around -- inspector -- before she absorbed the rest of his response. Criminal.

"Where?" Her voice immediately turned shrill and she squeaked in English, unthinking. Spinning, she gathered her shift and robes, considering fleeing when the man reached for her, but for good measure, she screamed.

It took him a moment to process the English - he had to depend on Luther for that, something he didn't like. But he stopped his movement, resisting the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. She was going to get herself killed at this rate.

"Your right, she's armed." Eponine's lack of a response didn't help matters. Was she waiting to sneak at them? He cursed under his breath, wishing he could pull out his gun without putting himself or Marian in danger.
