Who: Everyone!
What: Transformation Plot Post
Where: All over.
When: Moonrise on the 28th.
Warnings: All kinds, I expect.

The moon slipped up past the horizon full, round, and white. Its effects had been predicted, though perhaps not fully believed by the residents of the building.

Moonlight streamed through the windows of the building, washing the city in pale light. For the tenants of Bellum Letale, where ever they were, scattered in the night, it had a tangible effect.

Change rippled through the building, much as it had over a month before. But this was not simply a twitch in the fabric of things, gone in the blink of an eye. It was a rolling change, gradual as the moonrise, tangible, and, in some cases, likely terrifying in its inexorability. People became what they were, what they ought to have been, and what they weren't.

The moon was up, and trouble was about to run high in Bellum.

[Notes: Remember that the events of last month still apply-I.E, those who became vampires will be vampires when they take on their fable form, the Frog Prince will still be human after being turned back last plot, etc. Whether the fables are aware a month has passed since they were last around is up to the players. This log posted with the anon account so that the mods do not wake up tomorrow with 100 notifications in their gmail. Go forth and plot!]

Javert shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He wasn't nervous, but he wanted to be in a position to move, once he could. It was casual, not forward at all and his eyes narrowed at her. "You'll gain nothing-"

And then his eyes fell on the woman. Her clothing was odd, but he refused to be distracted by that. A civilian walking into this would only get hurt; something he couldn't allow to happen.

Still in French, not thinking to switch, Luther barked, "Stop."

Eponine glanced over the new arrival quickly. She didn't seem to be dangerous in the least, which was good, although not necessarily correct. The dress was pretty and she looked at it a little wistfully, remembering not-so-long-ago when she had had such pretty things, before they had lost the inn. Through her appraisal, she kept silent, but drifted a little closer to the woman. Let Luther try to explain to the woman the position he was in, but at least if he attacked now, it would seem like he was attacking her and not Eponine.

The man's accent was abominable, but Marian understood his command and she obeyed, as she was used to. But the man's clothing confused her: he didn't dress as a courtier or a squire, and he clearly wasn't a noble. So she drew herself up -- even though she was shaking inside -- and said in her practiced (albeit historical) French, as coldly as she could manage: "Who are you to order me about? I'm the Maid Marian, ward of the King."

It was a gamble to announce her value; the man in front of her could easy hold her for ransom. But the flash of panic she saw made her think the threat of the King's rage would be enough to dissuade him from hurting her.

He blinked at her accent for a moment. Even when passing the highest of stations, he hadn't heard someone speak like that. But Maid Marian rang a bell in Luther's mind. Javert had to remind himself of the whole confusion with being 'fables' - even if he felt that his life wasn't any part of a book.

"Inspector Javert," he said simply. "Beside you is a common criminal. I'd advise you to keep still before you get hurt, Mademoiselle."

There was a brief moment before he stepped forward, hand out-stretched. "She's no part of this-" he warned Eponine.

Mademoiselle Marian's French was strange and had an accent that Eponine could identify as slightly English from all her years of seeing travelers at the inn. Being a ward of the king wasn't about to help her, what with the rising rebellion, but Eponine had no intention of hurting the woman unless Javert started after her again. She kept quiet, hoping that Javert would appear insane, and sneaked a little closer, fairly confident that this one could not detect her.

Marian rolled the word around -- inspector -- before she absorbed the rest of his response. Criminal.

"Where?" Her voice immediately turned shrill and she squeaked in English, unthinking. Spinning, she gathered her shift and robes, considering fleeing when the man reached for her, but for good measure, she screamed.

It took him a moment to process the English - he had to depend on Luther for that, something he didn't like. But he stopped his movement, resisting the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. She was going to get herself killed at this rate.

"Your right, she's armed." Eponine's lack of a response didn't help matters. Was she waiting to sneak at them? He cursed under his breath, wishing he could pull out his gun without putting himself or Marian in danger.

Eponine scrambled back enough that Marian wouldn't hit her but no further. Silly woman. She was reminded a little of Cosette, all naive and fearful, which was enough to make her definitely not want to hurt the woman. If Marius ever found out that she had wounded some defenseless girl, he would hate her.

The swearing inside her head was a dirty mixture of French, Spanish and English as Eponine debated what to do next. Javert hadn't drawn his weapon so she supposed her plan was working well enough to stick to it. More silence followed. She smirked at the inspector, even though he couldn't see it.

In her confusion, Marian turned left and then right, trying to see the assailant allegedly menacing her; and she screamed once more for good measure.

"Back, you brigand," she shrieked, and she wished she thought to bring her belt. She had the small silver meat knife that she kept with her spoon, and while it wasn't a weapon, it was more than nothing.

In her most formal, precise French: "The King's men will be here soon," Marian tried to call up some of the regal bearing she witnessed among the court.

He remained still. The silent Eponine and the shrieking Marian together made an annoying pair. Javert raised his eyes to the non-existent Heavens, trying to find a solution to this. Nothing good coming to mind, he jumped up the steps moving to grab Marian's elbows and pull her away from Eponine. He'd rather be killed doing his job, then fail while doing it.

The cane remained in one hand as he moved to push her aside. Javert gave a look to where Eponine was and said ruefully. "There isn't words for how annoying you are."

Eponine let him move Marian without shooting, scrambling to reposition herself so that the woman was still between them. When he talked to her, her invisible features settled into something even more smug. Now, he would look even worse, hopefully. And as for being annoying, she was fairly certain that police officers everywhere had felt the exact same thing about street urchins for centuries.

"How dare you!" she shrieked in English, and she took a half-step backwards, trying to go back up stairs. "You're a mad man!" Afraid of turning her back to him, Daisy began to stagger awkwardly, hitching her shift and robes, her slippers slick against the worn steps. "Stay back!"

His grip loosened slightly - if she went back up the stairs, she'd be out of the way and safe. Javert sniffed again, not thinking to turn his head away from Marian. He cursed as he realized Eponine was still in the way.

Time for desperate measures.

He reached for Marian again, swinging her down the steps and out of the way. They were close enough to the landing that his push wouldn't send her down a flight; at the very least it wouldn't kill her. A moment later he had turned back to Eponine, his cane thrown in her direction.

This time, Eponine had to physically cover her mouth with her hand to keep from snickering as Marian called Javert a mad man. She found it less humorous, however, when his cane forced her to duck quickly and slide down the stairs after Marian to get behind her again. If Javert kept this up, someone was going to hear him and Eponine dearly wanted to be here when he had to explain his actions.

"Unhand me--" Her outraged cry was cut off as the vile madman flung her aside, like a sack of meal, and Marian staggered to keep from slipping on the polished floor.

"How dare you?" She couldn't keep her languages straight so she slipped back to English. "You will be hung for this--" But the madman's attention stayed on the stairs as he menaced a shadow or sprite seen only by him. Unsure of what else to do, she tipped her head back and screamed. Marian shrieked, motivated by stories from the court of the ways women could be defiled; somewhere inside of her, Daisy joined in, caught up in the excitement.

He ignored Marian, suddenly realizing Eponine's game. His lips curved into a snarl as he ran through Luther's memories, trying to remember where the light switch was. By now, he knew it was the shadows between the last time and now.

Javert grabbed the cane, moving against the wall and downwards. His eyes remained on the area next to Marian, where he knew that damned street urchin was. His left hand remained on the wall, feeling for a light switch.

Luther looked mad and Eponine sobered further when he started to move. His hand was sliding along the wall and Nina was screaming and screaming underneath Marian's racket. Eponine didn't realize what she was talking about until she followed the line directly in front of his hand to the little panel on the wall that she didn't recognize, but Nina certainly did. She immediately flung herself out of Marian's line of vision and took aim, but the shot didn't blow out the light until a moment after he had flicked it on.

The bastard! Eponine was furious, but at least invisible again as she began to reload. She didn't know if Marian had heard the shot over the noise of her screams, but if they both went after her, Javert was going down first. He had been warned, after all.

There was a flash and a deafening noise, and Marian's howl took on an additionally panicked edge. Were there invaders using petards on the castle gates? If so, where were the soldiers, the reinforcements for the castle?

She still saw white from the momentary brightness and she dropped to her knees, reaching for the wall, desperate to find some place to hide. For the moment, the madman was forgotten: the raiders were a greater threat now.

Though he was prepared for the light, it being shot out a moment later startled him more than he would have liked to admit. A glimpse of Eponine was enough though to show that he was furious as his right hand grabbed his gun, reloading seconds ahead of her. There was a click as he stepped around Marian, more sure of where Eponine was now.

"Go," he hissed towards the girl.

Eponine shot back behind Marian as soon as she saw the twitch that said he was going for his gun. It was exactly two more seconds before she had loaded, but the click of the gun was drowned out by Marian's yelling. She hoped Marian would go. The woman had acted as a fantastic shield so far; if she could protect Eponine up the stairs, that would be even better.

"Go where?" She darted for the only escape she could think of -- the stairs -- and scrambled, losing her footing for a moment when she stepped on her hem. That was all Daisy: at this moment, Marian was in a swoon, unable to handle the intense fear of this madman and the siege. Daisy didn't understand what was happening, either, but she knew from enough Law & Order marathons what a gun sounded like.

Impatient, she gathered up as much material as she could and draped it over her left arm, ignoring Marian's shrieks about modesty. Seriously, in what century was this chick living?

His gun was still pointed in Eponine's direction, as he followed Marian. The scent was slightly harder to follow, as they got higher. More criminals had been here and acted on things as well. His nose wrinkled as he tried to place where the urchin was, grabbing the cane as he passed it.

"Up - away - wherever you live." Eponine knew where Luther lived, but Javert protested over inviting a woman - a maid - to come there. Entirely improper and in the long run, could cause more damage.

They were leaving. Eponine was fine with that. She backed away nimbly, darting behind the desk in the lobby as soon as she reached it, now that Marian was no longer between her and the man with the gun. Leaning her head out because Luther couldn't see to aim at it anyway, she watched them go, idly wondering if there was any more time to find Marius. He really needed to be warned about this man.

She continued to obey, scrambling awkwardly up the stairs, but her panic returned when the madman began to follow her. By now, Marian had wrested control again, her mind turning through the possibilities: sentries at the tower, the King's personal guards at his quarters, the Sheriff somewhere...

"You'll be paid no ransom," she started, her voice shaking a little from the effort of being forward. "I'm a ward of the King, but he won't pay for my return." She was gambling, of course, with the assumption that this brigand wanted money more than a virgin. Were his savage lusts his only concern, then her maidenhead would be more than enough and that made Marian begin to cry.

Javert cast once glance over his shoulder in Eponine's direction. Assuming she could see him in the dark, his face had the sure promise that this wasn't over. He was after Marian in a moment, keeping the speed until they neared the fourth floor. Luther's level, but Marian had made no move to stop before. There was no chance of Marian going there and he slowed a bit, realizing Eponine wasn't following.

Besides, he had a crying woman on his hands. Luther was of little use, less so in anything so far and a bit of a disgusted look crossed Javert's face as a result. Twisting the truth to reassure her would be necessary. "I work for the king." Not hers, he supposed. "Merely trying to protect you from the woman below." His tone turned a bit more gentle as he fished a handkerchief out of his pocket, handing it to her.
