Who: The Hollis Family (aw)
Where: 1202 to wherever they go
When: Friday evening
What: They have to have a Talk too.
Warnings: Evie's angry, Jack's a jerk, and Nick is awkward. Usual Hollis!

Nick wasn't settled with this idea of going out to dinner with Jack and Evie. They were family, but Evie and Jack butted heads more often than not. She wasn't going to take this well, nor did Nick think Evie would even leave the apartment without a fight. It was tiring, but he'd work as the mediator if he had to. Coaxing Evie out wouldn't be too hard, but convincing Jack that they all weren't crazy wasn't his idea of a good time.

Nick tugged a t-shirt over his head and stepped out of his room, going to knock on Evie's door. "Evie? Can I come in?" Polite as ever, even with his little sister.

Evie was lying backwards on her bed listening to music and tossing a tennis ball up in the air, but she heard the knock and knew it could only be Nick. Marissa wouldn't bother knocking. Dropping the ball onto the covers, she hopped up and bounded across her room to pull open the door.

"Hey, Nick. What's up?" Evie hadn't thought about the dinner since the last time she told Jack 'no', and she didn't know about it now.

Nick smiled at Evie and shoved his hands in his pockets, "Hi Evie. It's okay I come in, right?"

He stepped in to her room when she took a step back, looking around for a moment as he tried to collect his thoughts. Evie could be stubborn, but Nick had a resolve. "You're going to come to dinner tonight with Jack and me."

"Yeah, of course." Evie grinned and moved away from her door. Then Nick's next words got to her and she stopped. In a series of shifts that were smooth and instantaneous, she tensed, crossing her arms and making her face as stubborn as she could. "What? Why?"

Nick looked up at the ceiling for a moment as if he was praying to god that some divine intervention would help him. Though, Nick was sure she'd just punch out the angel anyway. "Because," Nick started. Stopped and shrugged his shoulders a little.

"We need to talk as a family. I want us to."

Evie scowled-- not at Nick, but at a point somewhere over his left shoulder. "Jack made it really clear ten years ago that he didn't want us to be his family." It didn't matter what change of heart bullshit her oldest brother spewed out, there would always be that. Not that she wasn't going to do this if Nick really wanted it. But she was going to dig her heels as much as she could.

"But he's the only family we've got," Nick reminded her quietly. "Marissa's home less and less..."

He hesitated to bring it up, shrugging again and looking down at scuffed sneakers. "We don't have a lot left, Evie. He could be...you know, taking care of us soon."

Marissa had never been home a lot, but Nick wouldn't know that. Evie was doing her best to keep her brothers from figuring out how much she had been left to her own devices over the past several years. That would make them more overbearing and she didn't need to be taken care of, no matter what they may think.

Nicky though-- Nicky wasn't ready to be thrown out into the city to fend for himself and that was enough to make Evie drag her feet to her dresser to find something to wear so that she could change out of her running clothes. "He better not act like a jerk," she warned, scowl still fixed on her face as she dug through her shirts. "Do I have to dress nice?"

"I'm not dressing nice," Nick told her. Not that he really had all that many clothes to begin with. He went over to tug Evie into a hug and kissed the top of her head. "And I can't promise he won't act like a jerk. He's Jack. It's what he does."

He pulled back and grinned at her. "I'll let you get ready." And stepped out of her bedroom, shutting the door behind him. He went to the living room and settled on the couch, wondering when Jack was actually going to show up for this.

Evie changed into jeans and zipped an athletic jacket over her tank-top before going out to wait with him. "This is a bad idea," she told him flatly. Marissa had left that morning and wasn't home yet, so she didn't mind being in the main part of her apartment. "You're too nice to him, Nicky," Evie said without any real heat as she settled on the arm of the couch beside him.

Nick looked up at her and shrugged again. "Maybe." He laughed when she told him he was too nice to Jack. "I've tried to attack him a lot already. Your idea of that being nice to Jack is really weird, Eves."

Evie rolled her eyes. "Yeah, 'cause he deserved it. That doesn't count." She patted his head affectionately. "You talk to him without getting mad, mostly, is what I'm saying."

Nick quirked an eyebrow up at Evie. "You just get mad easy at him." He chuckled a little and settled, dropping his head ton rest it on her leg. "Besides, we need to convince him to stay away or go to a motel or something with this full moon business. I don't really want to fight anyone."

Groaning, Evie leaned back on her elbows. "He's so easy to get mad at though! He's completely full of himself." She scowled at the door, as if Jack was there already. "Do you think he'd do that?"

Jack knocked on the door to 1202 and waited. He was nervous, but he tried to keep it from showing on his face and he practiced smiling at the door. The tension of the last few days was catching up, especially after the disastrous night with Ileana and Cole, and he considered cancelling -- but the thought of Evie hectoring him about it was enough to stop him.

After a moment, he tried the door knob and called out: "It's Jack!"

"I guess we'll have to find out," Nick said with a sigh. He startled up when Jack tried the door. He stood up and unlatched the door, opening it up. He observed his brother for a moment, "Hi Jack."

He stepped back and opened the door wider for Jack to come inside. "Come in, we were waiting.."

Evie wanted to get this over with and Jack coming in wasn't going to help. Plus, the last time Jack had come in hadn't gone so well. "Nuh-uh." She shook her head at Nick and pulled him out. "We're getting dinner, so let's have dinner."

There was something so chillingly mature about the way Nick greeted him, and Jack was taken aback. He stood in the doorway for a moment before he recovered, then he strode into the apartment. "Hey, kiddo," he greeted Evie, aware he sounded too cheery, and he shoved his hands into his trouser pockets nervously.

Evie crossed her arms and stood outside the door, waiting for him to come out. He probably had about ten seconds before she shut him inside the apartment. "Not a kid," she informed him, tapping her foot impatiently and looking disgusted. "So come on already."

Nick grabbed his hooded sweatshirt, throwing it on as he gave Jack a smile. "Gimmie a minute, Eves. I need my..." he always hesitated when talking about his pills with Evie, "medicine. Don't be so impatient."

He stepped into the kitchen for a moment, carefully reading the labels of the bottles to find his Xanax. He was absolutely terrified of this trip outside. He could've yelled at Jack, begged maybe, to get them to stay at home. It probably wouldn't have mattered. He quickly popped two and shoved the bottle in one of the big hoodie pockets with nervous, shaky hands. Inhale. Exhale.

He walked out of the kitchen, trying to smile at them. "Ready. Where're we going?"

Jack clapped his hands eagerly, and he grinned at Nick and Evie. "What are you in the mood for?" Neither were dressed for some of the nicer restaurants he had in mind, but he wasn't in the mood to fight with them. "Japanese, French, Italian, Indian...?"

Jack was way too excited about this and most of Evie wanted to say something to bring him back to reality. She knew that she needed to play nice though if there was going to be a chance of convincing him to stay away on the full moon. And that was what Nicky wanted, so she would do her best to help.

Shrugging, she smiled at Jack like she usually did at teachers and nosy parents. "Whatever Nicky wants is fine."

Nick looked between them and shrugged a little. "Italian is fine. Pasta sounds good," it was a little bit of a lie. Nick rarely had an appetite for anything, but it all was the same in the end.

He looked over at Jack, "Know a good Italian place?"

"Of course I know a good Italian place." He liked knowing what was good and hot in a city, and he had found Bella Sotto quickly upon arriving. Going to the front door, he waited for Evie and Nick. "Walk or cab? The place I'm thinking of is about fifteen minutes away." His voice was cheery but he couldn't help himself: he was excited to see his siblings and he wanted Nick and Evie to think things were okay.

Evie deliberated. Walk or cab? The last cab ride had been oh so fun, but walking meant more time talking to Jack. Who probably was total crap with directions and would argue about them like a stupid guy. Even though Evie had totally lived here longer. "Cab." Since she was already in the hall, she took a couple more steps back towards the stairs and tapped her foot as she waited for them. She did grin at Nick as he walked out, teasing. "My leftover macaroni not cutting it for you anymore?"

Nick stepped out of the apartment, locking it behind him with a little smile. He followed Evie and let Jack catch up with them. "Your macaroni is fine. It's my own cooking that isn't." He flashed her a smile with a little awkward laugh.

Evie was ahead of them, clearly impatient, but he kept slow so he wouldn't lose sight of Nick. Even though his brother was legally an adult, Jack couldn't shake the feeling that something could still happen to him. Evie was tough enough to fend for herself but Nick seemed so vulnerable.

"How's school going?" he called down to Evie. "You're graduating this year, right?"

Evie stopped at the door to the stairwell and answered Nick first. "I've had more practice," she told him with a laugh. Jack asked one of those school questions that grown-ups tended to favor and she sort of felt bad for him, awkwardly trying to connect without knowing how to do it. She shoved that feeling all of the way to the back of her head and caught her thumbs on the pockets of her jackets, watching them catch up. "Yeah. In June."

Nick fell into step with Jack, fondly watching Evie walk ahead of them. He almost felt like he was beaming when he remembered she was graduating high school. He bounced the idea around in his head of how Evie would go on and do pretty much everything as if she was the next person to cure cancer and save the world.

In his head, she probably was the one to do it.

"Already, Evie? Geez," he teased with a smile. "Who said you can grow up?"

It was disconcerting hearing Nick tease Evie like that, sounding so grown-up himself, and Jack very nearly said that aloud. But he caught himself in time, clearing his throat instead, uncomfortably moved. He hated the strange stabs of affection he felt for Evie and Nick, even when they were maddening and aggravating, and he frowned. So he found himself asking, a little stuffy and pompous: "What are you doing after graduation, Evie? What schools are you applying to?"

"You guys are so slow," Evie complained. She grinned at Jack, looking strangely triumphant. "Already got into UNC." It was a point of pride, not that she wanted four more years of school exactly, but that she was doing something for herself and her future and she had accomplished it on her own. When they finally caught up to her, she transferred the smile to Nick and hopped down a couple stairs. "I get to grow up. That's just your hang-up."

There was a chill that settled in the pit of his stomach. UNC? North Carolina? His mind started to race with questions of how that was going to work. Would he have to live with Jack? No one could expect him to stay by himself. Or with Marissa, who barely referred to him by name.

The frown was fleeting on Nick's face, dropping his head to look at the ground and shrug a little. "Fine. I can go to Neverland without you then."

"Wow, nice," he said with real enthusiasm, returning Evie's grin -- which faded at Nick's comment. Neverland. He tried not to frown but thankfully Nick wasn't looking at him, and so he joked, gently clapping Nick on the shoulder: "How about you just stay with me here? Shorter trip for Evie, right?" He appealed to his sister, begging with his eyes for her to stay latched to reality, just for tonight. No more fairy tale talk.

When Evie had been accepted, Nick hadn't even been out of the institution and she had wanted to pick somewhere far away from Marissa without being close to Jack. She had barely thought about what next year would mean since then, but she would stay in an instant if he wanted her to and she hoped that he knew it, although she wasn't going to voice it here because she had no doubt that Jack would act like a grown-up about it and tell her to focus on her own future. Or something. She hugged Nick around the shoulders quickly. "But you have to take me," she complained. "There are like, zero crocodiles in New York City." She very nearly had said pirates, but a quick look at Jack told her that this was a bad time and Nicky probably wanted to at least make it out of the building before they brought up the full moon.
