[Left in the dumbwaiter, upon the return of her copy of Jane Eyre with notes in the margin, after days of sobriety.]

Mr. Webster Daniel,

I can only assume, from the regular return of my books through this little door in my bedroom, that you are alive. That, or Kat has developed romantic literary tastes in my absence.

If you did not go to the symphony, I am going to be unbelievably displeased.

Ella

P.S. Catherine and Heathcliff had the most unhealthy love affair ever penned. Stubborn fools, the both of them.

Claire,

I went, but I didn't like being there by myself. The music echoed too much. So I came home before the crowd. But it was nice, for a little while. I haven't been to a live performance in a long time. Thank you for the ticket.

Not even you can make me read Wuthering Heights again. Once was quite bad enough. If you've got it in this stack I'll probably find it in time, and then you'll get two books instead of one, because I'm only reading one at a time, and definitely not that one.

[Something crossed out here, but the word 'roses' is visible.] The herbs are doing well. Kat misses chasing the squirrel. Maybe I will send her down for a visit.

Wish you had not gone.

Daniel

P.S. Do not send squirrel up here, it will escape out of the windows.

Daniel,

I could pretend I'm not surprised to see a return letter, but I am. [Struck out but still visible] It was a lovely surprise to come home to.

Your opinion on Wuthering Heights, while not surprising isn't as blunt as I expected from you. Do you not believe in a love so fiery an passionate it eclipses all else? I always felt badly for Linton.

The marsupial is not foolish enough to fly out of your windows. Has Kat been an appropriate terror? I expect her to be, you know. Someone has to drive you mad now I'm gone.

You've changed my name for me?
Ella

P.S. Invite me up for breakfast, and I'll show you how to tend the herbs.

[Hurriedly, more in the style of a note.]

You want to come here? When? Now?

[Equally hurried. She's sitting on the floor beside the dumbwaiter now, and she peeks up the thing before returning another note.]

An invitation usually requires one party ask, and the other party accept.

[There's some clatter up the shaft, coming from the study, and some faint cursing as he trips over some books. The return note is about an inch wide and it says:]

Ten minutes.

[She laughs at the sounds coming from up above, and she sends a note back five full minutes later.]

Was that an invitation?

[There's no response until a full fifteen minutes after the first one. It comes in the form of his voice down the shaft, not a message. He sounds indignant.]

I HAD TO CLEAN!

[She laughs, and the sound carries up easily with the empty walls to aid in the echoing. Unlike him, she does send a note back up.]

Was that an invitation?

[Shouting!]

YES!

[Sounding entirely entertained as she calls up to him.]

Then ask me.

[Long twenty minute pause. The nicely lettered note is on computer paper, and it's mostly white.]

Will you please come have breakfast.

[She doesn't send the note back; she keeps it, folding it carefully and pressing it between the pages of the Jane Eyre he returned to her.]

[The return note smells slightly of roses (alive, not dead), and there is one word written in script in the center]

Yes.

[The sound of the dumbwaiter door closing is loud enough for him to hear when she closes it.]
