Subject: Hello from Peru!
Hello, Lotte!
I hope that you're doing well! I apologize for not e-mailing you sooner. I have been without access to any kind of wireless for quite some time. The jungle doesn't have a modem! But now I am able to access the internet, and I thought that I would show you something. I got one of those digital cameras that can take videos and the like. I can attach it to this e-mail so you can see it! You should watch it, it's very funny.
I should be going back home to Colombia in a few days. And then I am not sure where I go! Ah, but that is not so interesting. How have you been? I'm sure you are working very hard, like always! Make sure that you relax, okay? Your friend I met, the woman with the brown hair. James, I think? Tell her that I say she needs to take you out for fun sometimes! It is an order. I may not be a doctor, but I had a lovely conversation with a shaman just the other day and I'm sure he would agree with me that a little bit of happiness is the best medicine there is!
I hope to hear from you soon! Take care of yourself, and watch the video!
- Diego
The video opens with darkness and overwhelming noise of things being shuffled, the sound of grown men giggling underscoring the noise. After a few moments, a green scene appears out of focus and sweeps from the ground up. It takes a few seconds to steady as it flies around, finally focusing on Diego's face. He's dirty, with sticks in his hair, and it's obvious that he hasn't shaved in a few days. The camera shakes on him as he snickers, wandering slightly to include half of another man beside him.
"Okay, so this is what happened." His voice is a hushed whisper, and a bit of hushed Spanish can be heard in the background. "I woke up this morning and got out my breakfast, eh? It's one of those protein bars, they never go bad."
Another face swoops in from the side, jaw just as stubbly as Diego's. "And they taste like shit."
Diego snickers. "They are not so bad!" He shakes his head, looking back at the camera. "Luis doesn't know what he's talking about. Anyway. I got out my breakfast, and I set it down as I went to get something else. I come back, look around, it's gone! And as I look, there is this trail of shiny paper like what the bar comes in! I follow it and-" He breaks off, laughing. "See, see!"
He turns the camera away from himself and Luis, focusing on a tiny monkey perched on a low branch. It's gripping what appears to be a protein bar, nibbling on it daintily. In the background, hushed laughter is audible. The camera lingers on the monkey for a little while longer, zooming in as far as it will go until the monkey takes up nearly the entire frame.
Finally, it zooms back out and flips back around to show Diego. His face is red from laughing, and he holds up a hand to wave. "I hope you liked it! Bye!"
