Crime Pays Characters: Rachel Doyle, Simone Weaver, Dylan Stone. Setting: Axis City Court House. Content: Worksafe Summary: Simone loses a case despite a mountain of evidence and has to face a rather smug Rachel Doyle.
Simone growled under her breath, stalking up and down the steps of the court house, waiting for the press to arrive so she could make her statement and go home.
She couldn’t understand how the jury had come back with a not guilty verdict. All the evidence had been there – the gasoline residue on the boy’s clothes had been the same as the accelerant at the fire, there had been CCTV footage of them leaving the scene of the crime and two eye witnesses had identified them – by all rights it should have been an open and shut case.
She’d been surprised to see Rachel Doyle show up for the defence. Moretti’s private shark didn’t seem like the type to swim the waters of pro bono work and the boy’s she’d been defending didn’t have the deep pockets or rich daddies of her normal clients. But Simone had reasoned that even Rachel couldn’t win a case as obvious as this one.
Patently she’d been wrong. What had happened in that court room made no sense, and Simone couldn’t shake the feeling that something underhanded had gone on.
