Genna hummed to herself as she flipped through the book in front of her. She wasn’t supposed to be in the library, strictly speaking, by herself, but she liked the pictures on the walls and in the books. There were interesting gowns in the old illustrations, drawn by artists and scribes ages ago and the Maester was always fussing at her to stop asking about clothes and jewelry in the portraits he showed them and he wouldn’t listen when she told him she already knew about the people in them. He was always going on and on about who was who and who did what but he never said what they were like or why they did something or if they wore silks or satins or wool or velvet. It was like he wanted to be dull as toast. Dry, ugly toast.
He’d promised and promised to show them the dragons but he wouldn’t ever do it. That’s why she was in the library. She’d gotten mad and told him she hoped the dragons ate him. In pieces. He’d probably taste like toast too.
She missed the real maester, back in Winterfell, and their nurse. Pia was old though and she wouldn’t make the trip, so now Genna had Septa Mariyan, because Lady Kaelyn said the old gods weren’t taming her so it was time the New Gods tried.
Genna flipped another page and stopped. This was a story of the Vale of Arryn, about the Winged Knight… and there was a picture of Alyssa Arryn whose tears made a waterfall. The picture looked a little like her lady mother and Genna traced the outline of the dress. Kaelyn didn’t like it here and Lord William was busy and he couldn’t help anyway. Maybe mother would like to go home? The Eyrie looked so pretty…
