I'm too tired so could somebody do me a favor? Pick me up some hamantaschen for Purim?

Hamantaschen is a cookie.

Your wish is my command.

I do not know what a hamantaschen is. Is it better than those black cookies with the white on them?

I don't know about better. Black and white are delicious but hamantaschen are more special since they're only for Purim.

But could you not eat them whenever you wanted?

Technically but it'd be weird having a holiday treat at the wrong time of year. Like having a Thanksgiving feast in July or whatever Easter eggs are in the winter.

Turkey is eaten at all times of the year. We had turkey just a few days ago. I wasn't aware it was reserved for only a certain time of year. I shall have to let the kitchens know.

What? No! Youc an have turkey! Just not Thanksgiving.

Isn't there something you only celebrate once a year? Or what's the equivalent for you? Once a century?

I don't understand. How does food dictate your events?

We have many feasts, or blots, in my language. It is not so much the food we have, but the purpose behind it. We eat what is in season for that time, true, but I believe things like roast pork, fruits, vegetables...they would always be there.

That being said, we would never sacrifice a horse for Haust . That's something only done for Volsi .

It doesn't but through tradition and nostalgia, certain foods become more significant when they're associated with a holiday tradition. They remind us of that feeling of comfort, love, and home.

You'd never sacrifice a what now?

That makes sense. This is the first time I have truly experienced many of your holidays so I come with an unknown eye.

And a horse. We sacrifice a great warrior mount to celebrate its worthy life. Which holiday do you have sacrifices for?

Sacrifices have fallen out of favor due to cruelty. Most people would think killing a horse horrific. The biggest thing I sacrifice are bagels when I have to give up leavened bread for Passover.

Lady Jane. Brother. I apologize for intruding, but I hope to clarify. We do realize that times have changed on Earth, especially where animal sacrifice is concerned.

I admit being perplexed by this. I've read such ritual continues in some religions, where animals are killed in accordance with religious beliefs. Throats are slit to bleed an animal first, for instance. This made sense in times when blood was saved for later use. In parts of the central and southern Americas, chickens seem a popular choice. It seems some are killed and cooked as food, to be left upon an altar.

As far as our Völsi blót at Vetrnætr, Thor speaks of a warrior mount that lived a worthy life serving its master. It was not young nor untested, but of much older stock. This traditionally took place during our autumnal feast. Unless it was a Valkyrie's steed, our horses were not long lived. They were bred and offered in tribute to Asgard from other realms.

We know in Midgard's past, a horse would be slaughtered and the phallus preserved as a fertility symbol at Völsi. It seemed that mortals only had enough fodder to keep healthy breeding stock alive through winter. Any excess would be slaughtered at year's end for meat. A small part was offered, along with some of the year's harvest. Such offerings were in the hopes of a bountiful year to come.

In modern times, it seems there are a few countries where horse meat is consumed outside of this one. It also seems there are many who shun eating meat from all animals for ethical reasons, which seems more common in areas with greater food abundance.

Giving up bagels seems quite the modern sacrifice, though? I've grown incredibly fond of the cheese or berry varieties.

Bagels are also a worthy adversary. And delicious. I can understand their sacrifice.
