This Is Not My Beautiful House Party Thread
Who: Sam and Ellen, to start but OPEN TO ALL*
What: Sam's throwing a party for all the PCs
When: One Evening, Don't Get So Caught Up In Technicalities
Rating/Warnings: YELLOW to start, we'll see. If it turns into an orgy, we'll revisit this.

A/N: *I cannot emphasize this enough. OPEN TO ALL. I want a big, sprawling mess of a thread, like all the conversations at a big party. Indulge me!

Sam opened the door to find a woman standing in the hallway holding several cases of beer with no apparent difficulty. He recognized her from her icon on the Avengers Network. "You must be Ellen." He stepped aside, "Please come in."

She stepped inside and he closed the door. She glanced around the apartment. "Where should I put these?"

Sam led her to the kitchen. "You know that you're on set-up duty now, right?"

Ellen nodded. "I know. I came early because I wanted to discuss a possible project with you."

"The super fight club you texted me about?"

"Yeah. I've figured out where it's happening. Gamora and I are planning to get inside. But as it's held on a rooftop I thought another pair of eyes overhead wouldn't hurt. So I thought of you."

Sam put her to work loading beers into several large coolers while he chopped vegetables and filled bowls with various munchies. Ellen described what she'd learned, and what she hoped to accomplish by infiltrating the fight club.

"You really think the bad guys will show up?" Sam was dubious. "If it's as hard to find as you say, what makes you think they'll be there?"

Ellen shrugged. "It's worth a shot. Even if the bad guys don't make an appearance, it's an opportunity to meet some other metahumans, do some networking, find out of they know anything about these bad guys. Maybe even recruit some of them to help find and stop the bad guys."

Sam thought about it. "Okay, I'm in."

The conversation moved on to other topics at that point. Ellen told him her history with Stark, and Sam shared his as well ("I never actually tried to kill Tony," he said, "though the thought did cross my mind a time or two while in the Raft."). They moved on to speculation on other members of the Network that neither had actually met. Sam found Ellen to have a dry sense of humor, and a surprisingly good grasp of his pop culture references--at least those that predated her "death" in 2012.

By the time the doorbell chimed, everything was in place and Sam and Ellen were sitting in his living room drinking beers. Sam got up and headed for the door. "It's showtime!"

Jane Foster

Jane arrived alone, still unsure whether her time might not be better spent in the lab. She wasn't always great at big parties and so many of these people didn't feel connected to her life yet. It was like being the new kid at school, before you had anyone to eat lunch with.

Except Darcy. Darcy would have nagged her if she stayed home with her nose shoved in her research. So she went, with jeans and a purple flannel passing as party clothes.

Ellen opened the apartment door to find an another attractive woman--and what was it with this Network, that everyone she'd met so far was so attractive?--a brunette, standing there looking like she'd rather be anywhere else. This had to be Doctor Foster. Thor's girlfriend. Or was she his ex? Ellen wasn't clear on that.

She'd arrived alone, though, so she'd assume ex until proven wrong. And avoid any mention of the subject at all, even better.

"Hi," she said, "I'm Ellen Brandt. I'm sort of co-hosting for Sam. Please, come in. I'm glad you came."

"Hi, I'm Jane." Jane gave a little half wave and then cringed a little at her own awkwardness. She tucked her hair behind her ears and tried to power through. "Thanks for all this."

"I'd say 'You're welcome,' but really it's all Sam's doing," Ellen said. "He thought a party to let folks mingle when there wasn't an immediate crisis brewing was a good idea. I think he was right."

She held the door open for Jane to enter, then closed it. The buzz of conversation had grown louder, as was typical of parties. Everyone raised his or her voice to be heard over the crowd, who all did the same, and the noise level just kept rising til something shocked them all into a brief silence. Then it started again.

Jane was visibly uncomfortable. Not a party-goer, then. No surprise, really, Ellen thought. Still, she'd made the effort to show up.

"I can lead you to the bar, if you'd like a drink," she told Jane. "Or I can introduce you around. I know you know Darcy, and she's here somewhere. Whatever you'd like.

"A drink would be good." At least it would give her something to do with her hands. "Whiskey sour?" It had been her go-to drink in social situations since college. Other than rotating in an occasional glass of wine, Jane hadn't seen much need to change it. She'd never had time or space for elaborate bars, anyways.

"If you there's sour? Or a beer if there's not."

"Whiskey Sour is no trouble at all," Ellen said. She led Jane to the bar, where she put the drink together with no difficulty. Her repertoire of mixed drinks had its limits, but a whiskey sour was among the ones she knew.

"Here you are," she said, handing it to Jane. "Now, I can introduce you around, or leave you to your own devices. Whatever you'd be most comfortable with."
