Who: Jessica and Trish
What Whizzer, and Jessica's Past
Where: Alias Investigations
When: During the Hulk thing.
Warnings: Spoilers for season 2 of Jessica Jones, especially episode 1

Jessica Jones was not paying much attention to the fact that there was a giant Hulk running around, being a destructive asshole. She wasn't that kind of hero. She wasn't any kind of hero. Mostly right now, Jess was worried about Kilgrave and being upset about the fact that the one guy she was starting to like.. yet again just disappeared from her life. Fuck this stupid place. She needed new cases, which meant opening up the Investigations to anyone who needed help off the street. At least Kilgrave hadn't poked his nose into it yet. Wanting to help or whatever the fuck.

Then the others had come. There were lots of the obvious, the ones that were full of shit. Cheating husbands and wives. That kind of thing. She went through them one by one. Then there was the crazy guy who thought he had the power of speed. Faster than anyone. And he was being hunted. Someone was out to kill him. Jessica thought he was full of shit. That was until he'd showed her his power. And he'd only shown her the power when he thought he was in danger. The bad thing? He really was in danger. She had chased him out the door and down the street..

Until he'd been crushed by falling scaffolding. And now Jessica didn't know what to do. She sat at her desk, drinking. There was a knock at the door.

"Go away!" she called, drunkenly.

Of course Trish would just come right in.

Blinking slowly as her lips formed a straight line, Trish nodded humorlessly at her friend's drunken display of bravado. Not only was she jealous of being able to say that and really believe it, she also thought that a lock was preferable to the subconscious warning state that the possibility of an easy break-in brought with it.

Looking down at herself, Trish shrugged. "I had a weird extra-curricular."

As she was about to follow that statement with the reason for said extra-curricular and the gains it brought, Jess mentioned Kilgrave and Trish scoffed. "Like I keep tabs on that lunatic. I thought that was your burden. Speaking of which, what's with the scaffolding crime scene outside? You know anything about it? Anyway,"

Trish pulled the folder with the hospital records from her bag and closed the space between herself and Jessica's desk. In one swift move she dropped it in front of Jess and leaned her hip into the desk. "Your hospital records from the accident."

It was okay if Trish didn't any of this funny, because Jess surely didn't. She didn't find anything funny. If it were up to her, she would absolutely give Trish all of her power. No questions. No thinking about it. She would give it up in a heartbeat. It was fucking awful.

She eyed her up and down a moment. "Looks like it."

Jess rubbed her eyes and took a deep breath. "It is. Trust me." That was at least on the back burner, as far as everything went. She could deal with it later. "You know. There was a guy looking for protection cause he said he had a super power and someone was out to kill him. But I thought he was full of shit and it turns out he was right and someone found him here and killed him in front of me."

Yep. That was great. Didn't Trish want to be just like that?

The sound of the files hit the desk and she stared at them. Just stared and didn't say anything for a moment before looking up at Trish and giving her a 'wtf' look. "What's that for?"

"Don't worry about it." Trish muttered about the extra-curricular, fighting the urge to get another makeup remover towel out of her bag to once again rub her face raw. It was red in spots enough as it was.

Crossing her arms, Trish resolved not to continue the conversation about Kilgrave because it would do neither of them any good. When Jess moved on to talking about her would-be client and jumped a thousand steps between bullet points, Trish was left with her mouth hanging open, brow furrowed in confusion. Now here was another mess Jessica was potentially, accidentally buried in. "Jesus, Jess I'm sorry. Was it one of those superpower haters or something?"

Trish sighed deeply and opened the folder on the record of her hospital stay. The one that detailed how many days Jess had been there. Or how many times, considering she'd been sort of discharged twice. Her eyes widened. "There's a twenty day gap in there. You're unaccounted for for twenty days."

Definitely too tired and drunk to worry about it, or continue to pester Trish about something she didn't want to talk about. She was famous for doing that herself. And their friendship worked best when they didn't push each other's buttons. She had a feeling that was going to change when bringing up her medical records.

She shook her head, "No. I have no idea. I'm looking into it. But someone was definitely on the scaffolding. Waiting. And it just .. crushed him. Like a fucking bug." It was fucking horrible, that's what it was. And now she was going to have the police after her ass for something she didn't do probably. Her only solace was that hopefully someone caught whatever was going on outside on camera.

Jessica stared at the copies of her files and then finally looked back up at her. "What do you mean unaccounted for?" she asked, as she grabbed the file and opened it up. Against her better judgment. "It says I was checked in and.. oh. Like an actual gap. No notes about anything. Just an admission and a couple of notes about days and then nothing until I got released. Great." She put the file back down on the table with a sigh. "I mean, I guess I don't have to be a genius to figure out what the fuck happened in those days, right? I mean I didn't have powers and then when I left, I did so.. What are you doing this for, Trish?"

"What the hell..." Trish covered her forehead with her hand and sighed. She looked to Jess with compassion. "Have you talked to the police yet? I'm sure they'd come calling if you were right there."

And if she knew them, and she sort of did, they'd try to pin Jessica for it even if the killer made it look like an accident and there was nothing tying Jess to the murder scene except her standing vaguely there. The fact that the man had been seeking her out was probably enough to raise suspicions.

"Yeah, exactly. You 'poofed' out of existence for twenty days while supposedly recovering from serious injuries. So I doubt you took a walk and got lost."

Jessica's question seemed to have an obvious answer to Trish, who scoffed in disbelief. "Well, don't you want to find out? What they did to you? Who else they might've done it to? What if this has something to do with IGH, Jess? They paid your medical bills for no discernible reason. What if weird super soldier pills isn't the only thing they're up to?"

"No, I didn't talk to the cops. They're going to realize I was there. And then they'll realize I had nothing to fucking do with it." They'd better. Or she didn't know what the hell she was going to do. She knew they were coming, but hopefully someone had what happened on camera.

Yeah. She was probably going to jail. Again. For the second? Third time? She didn't know any more. It was a wonder she was allowed to have anything. Of course she never actually did anything. Except murder Kilgrave. But still.

"I don't think I did either. I'm sure they were doing god knows what to me." And that was a heavy door to open. "What will it accomplish, me finding out? What could it possibly change? My life fucking sucks. It always fucking sucks. It's not going to change anything, knowing what the hell happened to me. I'm sure they're all up to something, but it's not my fucking problem - "she paused because she didn't even believe that herself. "I mean I don't fucking know. Fuck. Why now?"

Trish didn't want to state the obvious but given past events it was unlikely that the police were going to leave Jessica alone. In any case, Jess knew she could count on Trish in the likely event of her being held in an interrogation room for hours again.

"It's not..." Trish lowered her head at first. "Not about you, Jess. It's about this guy they probably killed, and whomever else they're ruining along the way."

She raised her head again, standing away from the desk. "And hell, it's about knowing who ruined yours! Who's to blame for all the shit that's happened to you because of- look. You know I love your powers, what you can do, how amazing you can be. But the thing here is, no one's asking for this but they're doing it anyway!"

Crossing her arms, Trish gave Jessica a pointed look. "I'll even pay you. You're a private detective, so detect, privately, for me. And I'll pay you."

Great. Now it wasn't about her. It sure looked like it was about her, considering that she was putting her fucked up past on the table in front of her. "Don't you think I know that? I know they've probably fucked up a lot of people's lives. I don't think I'm the only person they did it too." One was never enough for those kinds of people.

"If you had them, you'd know they're not fucking amazing." No matter how many times she had tried to tell her that, there was no way to really show her how bad they were. Except the fucked up parts of her life. Things were fucked up, even before Kilgrave entered the picture.

She gave Trish a Look. "You're not fucking paying me. I don't want your money."

The thing was, that she was thinking about Whizzer or whatever the fuck he called himself. He shouldn't have died like that .She made a face. "Fine. Fine. I'll fucking look into it. Did you find anything else?"

It was, and it wasn't. Much like everything Trish ever meddled into that had to do with Jess. Trish rolled her eyes, and rolled them again. She didn't care how, she wanted this to be done. But right now she couldn't think of a way to convince Jessica that wasn't also abominable and a little much even for her.

Thankfully, it seemed as though she didn't need to think that hard. Trish tried to school her exhilarated expression, and when Jessica asked if she'd found anything else Trish shook her head at first. But then, Trish gave a surprised gasp when an idea crossed her mind, and immediately deflated. The idea wasn't stellar. It was pretty damn terrible, actually. For her, anyway. "I, uh... Not yet but I have an idea or two."

The thought of calling her mother for any favor was nauseating and yet, with her phone in hand, Trish was already texting her for a meeting soon.

Jess knew when Trish wasn't going to leave something alone. And the last thing she wanted was to have things escalated because Trish thought that was the only way to get through to her. She should have just said no and put her foot down. But she had a hard time doing that to her friend.

"Yeah? Like what? Am I going to like these ideas?" God she needed another drink.

Trish at least had the decency to look sheepish when she looked back at Jess after texting her mother. She pushed her hair back behind one ear and bit her lip before shrugging noncommittally.

"Um, probably not. But I'm in this, it's only fair I pull my weight too, right?"

Her phone vibrated a few times with a string of texts from her mother, expressing shock, then something demeaning, then naming a time and a place. And some requests regarding outfit, makeup and hair. Asshole. Trish inhaled sharply and shoved her phone into her bag. "Okay, step one's down. So this Whizzer guy. He wanted your protection not your PI services?"

All Jessica wanted to do was mind her own damn business, drink too much and make money by looking after shitty people who cheated on each other. That wasn't too much to ask, right? Apparently it was, because she couldn't get away from it. She just shook her head at Trish, but didn't say anything. As if she didn't have enough on her plate with this Kilgrave thing.

How come he couldn't be the one to disappear?

"Who the hell are you texting?" Because she had a few guesses, and none of them are good. None. "Yeah. He wanted protection. From whoever the fuck was going to get him. And they got him. So I'm gonna go over to his place and check it out. You want to come?"

"I uh," Trish hesitated, readjusting her hair as if to buy time to come up with a convincing lie. "I know someone who has connections in the hospital, who can get us access to all of your records. Your uh, your family too, if you think it's relevant."

She really didn't want to tell Jess she was about to essentially allow her mother to whore her out to Maximillian again, even if tangentially, and that her plan involved blackmail among other things. "Um, that friend of Matthew Murdock's, Karen Walker. She's a reporter, she might know something too. I'll email her."

Trish stopped to consider what Jess told her for a moment. "I wonder if they got him because he was blabbing or if he blabbed because he was going to be gotten. Anyway, are we going right now?"

Her eyes narrowed and she gave Trish that 'i know you're full of shit' look that she was famous for giving. To everyone, not just her. Still. "Okay, yes on the reporter. She was fine." And yeah maybe she had some connections. "No idea what you're talking about in the hospital, but I'll.. trust your judgment." Which meant that she better not fuck this up.

She reached over, pulled open the bottle of whiskey and took a drink. If she was going out, then she needed to be well lubricated. "I think he was going to be gotten. He came to me at the last minute. I think they just.. caught up to him." Whoever the fuck it was.

"Yeah. Let's fucking go."

Trish knew that look very well, and knew not to contest it or provoke her more. If she could trust Jess not to brutally punch Maximillian's lights out before she could get what she needed out of him, Trish would be happy to tell her about her plan. And bring her along.

"Thank you." Trish replied, managing to keep from sounding as doubtful as she felt about Jessica's trust. She also said nothing about the drinking ritual that seemed to happen before Jessica went to work. It might just be liquid courage on anyone else, though. And apparently they were going right now. At least thee was no time wasted. "Damn. Okay."

Grabbing her bag and coat, Trish made for the door, holding it open for her friend. She let Jessica call the elevator as she put the coat on and grabbed the car keys from its pocket. "Let's figure this out."

That whole not bludgeoning the man with her bare fists thing might have been asking a little too much. But she would at least wait until they could get something out of him, before she pummeled him to death. She knew that Trish worried about her. That her drinking could be the same as her old problems with drugs.

Jessica was nothing if not a super huge hypocrite about everything. "Okay."

Getting up, she grabbed the things that she needed and waited for Trish before heading out. "I found out where he lives." And then she gave Trish the address, since she was the one driving.

Trish spent the ride down to the ground floor punching the Whizzer's address onto her phone's GPS. When they arrived outside, she was ready to go. She had luckily found a parking spot not too many blocks away from Jessica's building, although it had been hard given that most of the street was now a taped off crime scene.

Trish sat in the driver's seat for a moment before starting the car. She was about to ask Jessica if she was sure when she realized it was her who'd put Jessica up to this in the first place. Unless it wasn't connected, but Trish doubted it very much.

Inhaling, she threw her bag in the backseat and started the car. Hopefully there would be answers at the end of this trip.
