Grad Party

Saturday - June 19th

Celebrating the Class of 2021
Darcy, using Tony's credit card, planned a blow out grad party for the four graduates who were currently stuck in this weirdo alternate universe - Peter Parker, Michelle "MJ" Jones, Ned Leeds, and Tandy Bowen. They rented out the The Upstairs Game Room and invited everyone in the Tower to join them. All of the kids were offered 'paid internships' at Stark Industries that included free housing so they could live there with the rest of the group instead of with their alternate universe families now that they were officially graduates. © tessisamess

Ned was excited. Ned was also nervous. Graduating felt great because not all of high school was particularly awesome. However he also knew that when you left high school things were expected of you - way more things than he was sure he was ready for. The cool thing was that Mr. Stark had said he could move into Stark Towers. Of course, he hadn't talked to his parents yet about it. He wondered if they'd let him. Maybe if he talked about how good of an opportunity it was and throw around words like scholarship they'd be okay with him not going to Stanford or MTI or whatever.

Ned was currently standing in the corner with a drink trying to look like he wasn't having an existential crisis. It was semi-successful, but he really needed to work on the smile a bit more.

It was good to get out of the Tower for a little while. He spent the majority of his time in the penthouse workshop and lab, or suiting up for test flights over the Atlantic. Except for spending time with Morgan or Darcy, he was pretty holed up. Which could be dangerous, when he was left to his own devices.

Devices were currently at home, except for the internal body mods. This was a time to celebrate some high school graduations, after all. Tony was dressed in a clean casual suit and sneakers, walking through with a lightly spiked drink. Which he could do, because a bevvy of nanobots were keeping his liver from getting pickled. Best idea ever.

He walked up to Ned and gave him a pat on the shoulder.

"Heya, Mister Leeds. How's it going? Bet it feels good to leap into the deep end of the pool, huh?"

Probably not the best thing to say to someone having an existential crisis right now. But Tony Stark opened his mouth and out came the metaphorical equivalent of that giant rolling rock ball from the first Indiana Jones movie, rolling right on out there. Unavoidable.

It was still strange that he could actually just talk to people like Tony Stark or Steve Rogers or any other super cool superhero and it be kind of... normal. It still didn't feel completely normal, but at least he could figure out how to get his mouth to move and make words that actually made sense instead of stumbling over vowels and just genuinely failing at life.

"Well... I keep sort of waiting for someone to like, you know, tell me it's a joke or something and that I need to be back at school in September." It was a weird feeling. "But since this is my second go of senior year, I'm kind of glad not to suddenly disappear again for five years." Even though Ned didn't have any memories of missing five years - since he technically didn't exist - the idea still freaked him out.

Tony looked like he breezed in wherever and fit, which he knew was obnoxious to others. That didn't stop him from throwing an arm around Ned, and giving him a reassuring shoulder patting as he spoke.

"Not a joke. You're outta there. Not outta here, because you've got an internship to tackle, and man in the chair is an important job." He made a little toasting motion with his drink. "You've got your own apartment. You can go to college anywhere. The world's your oyster. I could really use some oysters...or some shrimp."

He looked around, but didn't see any random seafood towers nearby.

He glanced over to Tony with a big of a confused look at the mention of oysters and shrimp, but the expression wasn't lengthy. "Speaking of the internship thing... what are we going to do, exactly? I should probably say something to my mom so she's willing to let me move here." He was already anticipating a lot of crying from his mom and some sort of stoic expression of pride from his dad. "Is it going to be hard? Not that I mind hard."

Tony's brain was capable of parsing nine things on-screen at the same time while doing pull-ups and remote controlling a suit of armor. In other words, it was like trying to herd a hundred kittens into one designated location. Sometimes this resulted in the sudden realization that certain foods sounded suddenly yummy, like randomly asking for tuna sandwiches or some shrimp. Which this clearly wasn't the venue for, so Tony was pursing his lips a little and blinking a whole lot.

Like he was locking on target, he honed in on Ned rather than making a reservation at Balthazar for a Le Grand seafood tower.

"What do you want to do?" was his reply. "There's September Foundation scholarships if you don't want the internship to pad your resume. We've got a top-tier I.T. department, and it won't start off too hard. You could help remotely coordinate larger Avengers stuff on the fly. Maybe intern at SHIELD with zero level clearance, if you really want to go that route. Fair warning? Fury is scary in any universe."

He visibly shuddered from a sudden case of heebie-jeebies before getting back on track again.

"No pressure. You've got time to think it over. And if you want to stay in the Tower and just go to college, that's ok too. You've stuck by Peter, been a good buddy. So the internship is open-ended, and I can write you a recommendation for wherever you want to apply to. That sound ok?"

Those were a lot of good options. The idea of working with superheroes that just wasn't Peter was both intimidating and wonderful at the same time. He knew he wanted to stick close to wherever Peter and MJ were.

"I want to do the internship." He said it with a sudden rush of energy. He pulled that back a little. "I mean, college is cool and stuff and I could probably do some courses online, but I'd learn a lot more here." He was already hacking far beyond his computer courses in high school. "And learning from someone like you would be really cool too... plus, yeah, Fury is kind of scary." He didn't remember being hit my the tranq gun, but he remembered the grogginess of waking up.

Tony blinked at Ned a few times before giving him a gigawatt smile.

"Great!" He clapped Ned on the back, but not as hard as Thor would. No need to rattle the ribcage or anything. "There's all sorts of options, and online classes. Those are a thing."

As for Fury?

"If he comes at you with anything gun shaped, back out of there as fast as you can." He paused to take a sip off his drink. "Your parents know that you've got a room in the Tower? Give them my number if they have any questions."

The idea of Fury coming at him with a gun or anything else was definitely intimidating while still being cool. He didn't want to be tranq'ed again, but he supposed it was sort of a compliment that Fury felt the need to do that anyway?

"I, uh... haven't really told my parents anything yet?" His eyes widened just a little. "I mean, I plan to, definitely, I just, uh... My mom'll probably cry? Not in a bad way or anything, but she'll do the whole like proud mom teary eye thing and I've sort of been putting it off..."

No one liked it when their mom cried. Fine. Maybe a cold hearted person did. No one wanted to hang out with people like that anyway.

"Can't blame you," replied Tony, wincing slightly. "Internship is a god. But you tell her when your ready, and your room will be there for you. And I'll have H.R. set up your internship badge. You can pick it up at their office and they'll have you sign a few forms. When you're ready."

He held out a hand to shake on it.

Maybe he had talked to Mr. Stark a few times now and he hung out with Peter and MJ a lot in the tower, but Ned was pretty sure he'd always be a little star-struck when dealing with the man. He was, after all, both Tony Stark and Iron Man.

He really hoped his hand wasn't clammy or sweaty when he shook Mr. Stark's hand. He also tried to make sure it was a firm handshake so as to not disappoint. "Thanks, Mr. Stark. I really appreciate everything." It was exciting, too, considering everything. He wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Peter. He'd have to thank his best friend when he saw him again.

No clamminess detected. It was a good firm handshake for both of them, and Tony nodded like he was impressed. Which was saying quite a lot since Tony often looked like he was sizing people up for recruitment or an argument.

Luckily, this time it was pure, unfiltered recruitment.

"Don't mention it. I'll see you soon." He pointed over toward some pizza while walking over to it. "I'm gonna go grab a slice. Have fun."

Peter found his friend after messing with the giant Jenga set - which was really cool - and he was feeling similar mixed feelings of nerves and excitement when it came to graduating. He recognized the look on Ned's face, and it had him feeling a little emotional to think of how they'd made it all this way together. Ned had been there for him since they were half the height they were now, and he could only hope he'd done the same.

"Hey," Peter said once he reached him, lifting his drink up in a cheers motion. "So you know what's awesome about all this? We don't have to see Flash from now on if we don't want to." ...Unless he got sucked into this universe too, which was always a worrying possibility.

Seeing Peter definitely had Ned's shoulders automatically relaxing. It always felt a little easier navigating life around him or around MJ who was definitely cooler than both of them.

"That is one of the best things about all this. Though I'm sure Flash will tag us in all the things he's doing on his Tiktok or Instagram account." Things like driving his dad's expensive car or boat or whatever. Things he and Peter could only experience by proxy with Mr. Stark in the mix. There were sometimes Ned really wanted to be able to admit he was friends with Spider-Man and knew the Avengers, but he also knew he couldn't. It was a burden he'd bear.

"Have you told your aunt yet? I totally didn't tell my parents about moving in the Tower yet... I'm trying to figure out the best time to tell them."

Peter winced at the thought - Flash would likely be broadcasting all the fancy stuff he was doing with his summer where anyone could see. "I guess we could block him if it got too much. But then he'd probably get his Flash mob on us." Although, weirdly, Peter couldn't see him cutting Flash out of his life completely. It was always good to keep tabs on someone who liked Spider-man so much, and Peter still had a hunch Flash ran one of the many 'Spider-man update' accounts that had sprung up over the years.

"I did, and she's...good with it? I think she's just glad we won't have to worry about room and board costs." May didn't like Peter straying too far from her, but the relief in her eyes when he told her about Tony's offer had been his own. She'd worried for years about how to put Peter through college, and with his scholarship and the Tower, now that was a weight off of their shoulders. As long as he could keep his grades up, anyway. "I think she knows something's up, but she's pretty used to things being weird."

Peter figured it was a lot easier for May to get used to the idea than Ned's parents. She might not know about the parallel universes, but she knew about Spider-man and his guy in the chair. "Do you think they're going to be okay with it?"

Ned kind of liked the idea that they all wouldn't just disperse now that they had graduated - they being the whole Academic Decathlon Team. Maybe it was childish or stupid or even cliché, but he didn't just want to just forget everyone and 'move on'.

"Yeah, I guess that makes sense." He meant about Peter's aunt. "I don't really have that whole excuse of like, being a superhero thing. I don't actually know if my parents realize I know Mr. Stark. - well, not know, know, but like, we talk and stuff and he doesn't get security to throw me out which I think is a pretty good step." Where Ned was going with that, even he wasn't sure by the end of it.

He blinked and then refocused. "I don't know. Maybe? I think mom'll like me being close to home. My dad will probably want to know like, what kind of degree I am getting and how much it'll pay or something, but I could probably fake a good document for that." Or Mr. Stark could, most definitely. "Maybe it's just me."

"I mean, you're a superhero to me." Peter grinned and nudged Ned in the side lightly, but he grew more focused as their conversation went on. "I wonder if they'd freak out if you told them Spider-man consults you for his tech issues?" He guessed that would depend on what they thought of Spider-man in the first place - a lot of people in the city were supportive, but others saw him as the menace JJ Jameson always claimed he was.

"That could help explain the Tony connection. Or - you're smart, dude. Even if we hadn't gotten involved in this whole side of things, you'd be on the radar of someone like him." But no matter how Ned's parents took it, it was still all a lot to take in. They were starting to grow up, and the changes felt like they were all happening fast. "Adulting is kind of scary, isn't it? I'm really glad I'll be doing it with you."

Ned smiled at the compliment. Peter was smart too so hearing the compliment meant more than if some random person said it. "I think maybe if I mentioned that I like, never see the bad guy that they'd be less worried." Except sometimes he did, like at the school dance. Sometimes you also had to be closer to something to hack it... maybe he'd keep the whole Spider-Man thing under wraps for now.

"Ugh. Adulting is scary and hard. I mean, like, we're going to have to feed ourselves now, do our own laundry, force ourselves to go to bed instead of binge watching Star Wars." Ned listed it like these were the worst things in the world. It didn't occur to Ned as he talked that his upbringing was a little different that his best friend who only had his Aunt to depend on in the last couple of years.

"Speaking of Star Wars though, we should definitely binge watch the whole series at some point." Did MJ like Star Wars? Ned had no idea.

"Hey, no curfew at least." As overwhelming as it would be to adjust to the grown up life, there were perks. "And if we want to eat donuts at 2am, we can." Not like that would be a good idea on a day before class, but no one would be able to tell them otherwise. Well, sort of. There were plenty of adults in the Tower, so they wouldn't be able to go too wild. As wild as self-professed nerds like Peter and Ned could get, anyway.

"We should add that to a list. Our summer bucket list." Peter's eyes lit up at the mention of Star Wars. "We could fill it with all the stuff we want to do before September. We could bring MJ in on it. And Tandy if she's interested, too." If this was their last summer before college and other responsibilities fell into the mix, Peter was determined to take advantage. "What else could we put on it? Coney Island. All the touristy stuff, all the non-touristy stuff..."

The no adults thing was definitely a plus for the most part, though part of Ned wondered if that meant they'd have to fend for themselves more often. Maybe. Or maybe not since the Tower was filled with superheroes.

"We definitely should do the Sterling Faire. Are we too old for Legoland?." He hoped not. He still collected and built Lego and liked it when Peter helped out too. Maybe the theme park would be for kids though.

"Dude, we're never too old for Legoland." Or so Peter believed. He wasn't sure if others would agree, but he and Ned had tackled some pretty complex projects - which had helped build their interest and skill on the innovating side of things.

"Definitely adding those both to the list." Peter pulled out his phone and made a new note for a summer bucket list, grinning over at his friend. Despite all the changes upcoming in their lives, having the next few months ahead to hang out without schoolwork would make the transition easier. "Let's see what else we can come up with."

Illyana had never graduated from high school before.

It was a foreign concept, throwing a party for such things - she was almost certain she should have graduated from high school, but she spent time in Limbo and it passed oddly in that place and felt strange, sand soaring through an hourglass. Likely she missed quite a bit about what could be considered a 'normal' schooling experience.

But she wanted to see what it was like and she wanted to go to a party - it was a loud party, neon lights and ones that flashed and the plink plink of games that all echoed and seemed so far off and yet close and overwhelming all at once. She kept Lockheed in her back pocket and wore dungarees (she would probably regret this after she drank so much soda and had to go to the bathroom) with a white ribcage printed on one half, and black boots. Her hair was pulled up into two separate buns on each side of her head - quirky, perhaps, but that was who she was. A quirky flaunter of darkness - one holding a soda and going around seeing what board games there were because the arcade ones were so noisy.

Remy had never graduated from high school. He considered himself a graduate of the school of life, specializing in general studies and romance languages.

Still, he liked a party. This place was strictly a casual affair, so he was wearing a dark sleeveless tee and worn-out jeans, with boots that had seen better days. He was comfortable no matter what he was wearing, and used to doing a pass-through to say hi before retreating off into the corner to watch for a little while. Before, it was a means to steal something off a mark or to follow them later so they were unaware. But doing that kind of stuff didn't seem too hospitable after his stay in the Tower. He actually liked the people there and wanted them to like him too. Despite the fact that he was there to make sure Rogue stayed on task at Sinister's behest. A job he both loved and hated since his current co-worker was as fiery as her hair color was.

What Remy really liked about living in the Tower was new people showing up all of the time. It was a fixed location, but new visitors to this universe seemed to come and go constantly. Case in point? He sidled up to the newest resident with a wide smile.

"Whooo~eee, mon amie! You look like you're dressed up fo' no good," he said in a smooth drawl, resting a shoulder up against a nearby wall. He didn't do anything lascivious and kept it casually friendly, instead eyeing the board games curiously. If the girl was alone in the corner, she might not want company, and he could easily mosey off elsewhere. "I'm Remy. I think we talked on de network. Sidewalk side-step, right?"

That was quite an accent, wasn't it? Straight from the bayou and soaked in absinthe - accents were fascinating to Illyana in general, but the Cajun kinds, they seemed eclectic. Much of a hodgepodge, like the city of New Orleans itself - she hoped to be able to go one of these days. Perhaps when she got a better grasp on her portals and teleportation.

"I'm always dressed for no good because I am up to no good," she responded with a smirk, pushing off from where she'd been leaning against the wall. Her own accent was thick (thick as the borscht her mother used to make, yes?), but she could speak English fine. Most of the time (occasionally she did not know what words meant or got confused about how odd this language truly was). She sipped on her soda, the fifth one or so - and she was surprised she wasn't ready to float away, what with all the caffeine and the sugar. "Yes, Remy - side stepping the dog waste." She imagined he probably found worse on Bourbon Street. "I am Illyana. Do you know the ones who graduated?"

Now that accent was downright exotic, and it fit the person speaking it to a T. She was like a Russian doll, and if she was the nesting variety, at least one of those layers was made up of danger and confidence.

"Gal after my own heart," he said with a wide smile, even if his heart was already given away. Oh, unrequited love! Stories like that never ended well, but they were fun for as long as they lasted. "Dat's me. Side steppin's included."

He stayed put, still leaning like he was holding up the wall or vice versa. Wherever he stopped, that's where he was meant to be. That included his infrequent stops in Genosha. Still, he never got a sneak peek at any of Sinister's so called "projects." Projects manipulating lives, that only some were lucky enough to escape from. Others weren't so lucky...

That thought almost dimmed his smile. Almost. That smile somehow stayed in place, all carefree and breezy. Let the good times roll.

"Don't know who it was dat graduated. Good for them, though." He leaned in and said with a coy wink and a conspiratorial whisper, "I think de whole graduating thing's kinda overrated. But any excuse for a party, non?"

"Yes, I am happy for them - happy there is a party too," Illyana agreed. She thought it was nice, something to be proud about if you had worked hard in school - it seemed so normal, so pure. Not anything she knew much about, but that was fine - she knew a sky devoid of stars, black as onyx, demons and a time as a kaleidoscope and also something that existed separately. Her existence here, on Earth, would be filled with a lot of learning. Maybe she could catch up.

She returned the smile, though hers was sharper - had a razor's edge, though it wasn't anything against anyone. Definitely not Remy. It was simply the way she was - dangerous, an outsider, a square peg in a round hole. Especially in a place like this.

She felt strangely at home in the Sanctum though. What was off-putting to others was welcomed by the likes of her.

"I am just not sure what to do with myself now that I am here," she admitted, shrugging one shoulder. "How do you be normal?"

Remy was used to hard luck cases, because he was a hard luck case too. He didn't divulge too much of his own past, but growing up in an underground thieves guild in New Orleans meant he didn't play by the rules. The dangerous cut of her smile didn't deter him, either. He was like a moth to a flame when it came to danger, so he wasn't shying away. Whatever secrets she did have, he was curious about.

"Barkin' up de wrong tree, cher. Dunno nothin' about normal? But I do know a lil' about cutting loose," he said while reaching into his back pocket and producing a flask. He shook it around so she could hear the slish-slosh of liquid inside. "I had dem fill it with bourbon, downstairs."

It helped that he had time to flirt with a cute bartender and that they didn't see him sneaking up to the game room after.

Ooh, interesting. Illyana had been wondering if there was alcohol at this party (she'd only spotted soda and water, nothing giving off the pungent aroma of liqueur) - she was guessing not, however, because America had some strange laws about ages and drinking and apparently you were considered an 'adult' at age eighteen (could buy a lottery ticket, live on your own, be shipped off to fight in wars) and yet could not wander into a pub and ask for the bartender to pour you a drink. It was odd, especially considering the drinking age in most other countries was much lower.

Well, there were ways to work around it if one wanted to, she supposed. It didn't matter to her any. Either way, bourbon added to her Coca-Cola would probably perk things up a little.

"Share?" she asked with a twist of lips upward, a smirk, as she held out her cup of soda. "Just a splash or two. Cutting loose sounds fun to me."

This was no big deal to Remy. He'd been sneaking drinks since he was a teenager too. He never went off the deep end or anything. A splash or two was so tiny, that it probably wouldn't make a difference anyway.

He wasn't sure what the legal drinking age was in Russia, but he was guessing it was closer to eighteen. He shrugged and with a sploot sploot, poured a bit of honey colored delight from the flask into her cup. Two splashes. Generously given.

"If anyone asks, ya didn't get it from me," Remy said, winking at her and grinning wildly. "Wanna play Monopoly? Fair warnin', but it'd be dishonorable if I didn't tell you. I cheat like a sonuvabitch."

He usually got some combination of Boardwalk and Park Place, the four railroads, and the utility squares. Mostly through bartering and trades when someone one else ran low on cash.

The identification she had made up for herself said she was twenty-two - so if she wanted a drink she would get one (the drinking age in Russia was eighteen, like it was basically everywhere else in the world). But there was something exciting about sneaking alcohol anyway. One had to get their thrills where they could, and Illyana didn't think the video games would thrill her as much as bringing alcohol into a party where it would have probably been cause for concern. Oh, well. That rebellious streak would never be tamed or squelched.

"Secret is safe," she promised, with a solemn cross-my-heart gesture, though the copper of her eyes twinkled with delight after she knocked back a hearty sip from her cup. Much better. "Yes, let us play Monopoly - though you will have to show me how. I do not think I have done this before but if you cheat I will have to kill you."

That was a joke. But even if Remy did cheat, she probably wouldn't realize anyway since she was so unfamiliar with the game - all she knew about it was that it tended to last for hours and was a good way to cure sleeplessness.

Remy laughed at that and made the same cross-his-heart gesture while bowing a little, saying conspiratorially, "Sure, you can kill me. But you're gonna have to catch me first."

He took a quick sip from the flask and tucked it into his back pocket, sitting down at a gaming table to set up the board.

"All right. Pick a critter or a thing," he started to explain, showing the game pieces while setting each one down. "What you pick says a lot about de person you're playing against. Dis game's got a duck, a mangy lil' mutt, a penguin, a dinosaur. A top hat for people who want to look fancy. Battleship and a race car. I call dibs on de cat."

A small metal cat was held up as he admitted, "I got two strays in my apartment. Buffy an' Willow. Take dat secret to your grave, madam."

Stark didn't strike him as a pet guy, but the sexy-sounding AI didn't give him any grief about pets roaming around either. Nevertheless, he put a finger to his lips and shushed softly, setting the cat piece down on the starting square before counting out money and setting the card piles up.

Illyana laughed a little, letting Remy have the cat - if he was partial to felines, then by all means. "I will have to take the dinosaur, then," she decided, because it reminded her of Lockheed a little and was a fearsome creature (and, according to Jurassic Park, the tyrannosaurus rex was the powerful female hero we all needed in our lives). She selected the small silvery piece, rolling it in between her hands. "But your other secret is safe too."

She liked cats. Liked animals in general, really - some of her fondest childhood memories (before everything went wrong) involved flashes of a farm. Dairy cows, rustic wind, fields of potatoes, frost penetrating deep into the soil for many months - but that was the climate in Siberia. "Taking in strays - a decent thing to do. And of you ever need cat-sitter, I will do this." Maybe she could consider a pet too, but maybe not - her apartment was very small and she wanted to be able to let Lockheed spread his wings as much as possible, in the Tower. Another pet to look after would likely be too much.

"Alright, now show me what to do with this fake money."

A big roar and a bigger bite. Respectful. He got that much from her choice, and he nodded like it was a good one.

"Thank you, ma'am. Always good when you find a fellow secret keeper," he said with a wink, "not to mention a cat sitter! I take off a lot to see de family down in N'awlins. It'd be much appreciated."

He went on to explain the game in detail, and since he was a gentleman, he didn't leave anything out. Including what to do with all that fake money. And maybe he gave her a couple more splashes of bourbon, because what's a drink between friends? Shhhhh.

Graduating high school felt...weird. Graduating high school with his identity in tact and miraculously not stuck in any other kind of disaster - that felt even weirder.

Peter was celebrating this weirdness by the snack table, filling up with a little bit of everything from Darcy’s excellent catering choices. It was nice to have a party like this to mark the occasion, because Peter wasn't sure if he'd really believe it otherwise. He sometimes felt like he'd only just narrowly made it, but high school was over. He'd be a lot more relieved if the idea of juggling both Spider-man and college classes wasn't looming so largely ahead.

But for now? He had fancy pizza. And a whole lot of appetizers. Veering away from the food once he'd polished off almost half his plate, Peter wandered off in the direction of the game tables, searching out anyone he knew.

Loki wasn't sure what graduations were all about, other than it might be some right of passage when a Midgardian reached their age of majority. He was used to feasts with food and music, and he enjoyed those very much. His wife was still finding her footing as far as socializing went. He was fairly certain that she would be dubbed a 'workaholic'...which was a word that he heard Stark say a few times, while breezing past underlings pestering him with incessant questions.

At least this event coincided with his stay in the Tower, so he was able to attend.

He held a drink in his hand, a soda with some oddly peppy name. It was a sickly sweet dark brown concoction, with bubbles that tickled his nose. While the sweet was cloying, he loved champagne. Alfheim had entire rivers of the stuff. There were plenty of games to look at, including video games that he was fascinated by. At least that was the case until he spied Peter, and he closed the distance with a impish grin.

"Hi," he said as he approached. "I wish to extend my congratulations on your graduation. Did you slay something in particular as a means to prove your worth? Or did you face off against an opponent in armed combat before your peers?"

Peter glanced up when he heard Loki’s voice, giving him a grin back. It was funny - and ironic - how Loki used to be the face of some of a much younger Peter’s fears. The attack on New York had shaped some of his childhood, but now he knew that tLoki’s journey had gone far differently than most people had assumed. And, aside from that, bonding over art thieves and Justin Hammer’s cronies had been a steady foundation for a friendship. A chaotic one, at that.

“Hah, no. I’ve never really ‘slain’ anything. No stabbiness, remember?” Although, when he thought about Beck in the other universe, he wondered how much responsibility he carried for the man’s death. At least his hand hadn’t been on the other side of the drone weapon. If Peter had his way, it never would be. But Loki’s assumption had Peter interested in the god’s own experience. He tilted his head to the side in curiosity. "Is that what you did when you graduated?"

It was difficult - no, impossible - to overcome being associated with that event. A war that he hadn't truly wanted but had started by being at the right hand of Thanos. Of which, there was no side of Thanos that was good, and he was going to be wary of scepters from now on.

"Oh, I do remember." Loki's smile said he had pulled knives on quite a few occasions regardless. He was curious as well, because he wasn't sure what mortal graduations involved, fully. "We marked our age of majority in combat, as all warriors of Asgard must do to prove their worth. It meant that we were ready to go forth on campaigns, all to ensure the peace."

He passed, of course, but only because he used his skills with magic. It wasn't deemed honorable, but it was effective.

He tilted his head to one side. "What did you do to graduate?"

"Wow. You fought each other? What happened if you lost?" He could imagine Thor swinging his way through that with ease, and after seeing how ruthless and clever Loki could be firsthand, he didn't doubt he'd passed with flying colors as well. "And were you just thrown into the next battle that came up?"

The thought of life on Asgard going back hundreds and hundreds of years before he was born - and Loki being there for it all - lit up Peter's curiosity. He only wished the original realm was still there to see.

"Well, I definitely didn't fight my classmates," Peter said, even if he's sure Flash would probably jump at the chance for at least a verbal squabble to prove his worth.

"I mostly just wrote essays. Did a lot of final projects and tests. Cried a lot." That last bit was a joke, but there had been a couple times Peter was close to a panicked hysteria in the morning when trying to push out the last hundred words of a lab write-up. "I guess you could say it was a lot of mental combat?"

"Oh, much like ensuring the peace," Loki replied, "it wasn't very peaceful for the losers. A consilatory pat on the back and years of being reminded of one's shortcomings. Including using magic in mid-combat."

Which wasn't very honorable, apparently. Loki looked as though he had sucked on a lemon for a couple seconds, before schooling his expression back into something much more pleasant.

"All things considered, I'd prefer the mental combat," he said, profoundly amused. "Including the tears. I'm glad you surpassed this, and assume you will not have to go through this again."

"Hey, nothing wrong with using magic. You use what strengths you've got," Peter said with a shrug, easily seeing it that way. Dr. Strange and Wanda were some of the most powerful people here, and their abilities were far from shortcomings. To him, Asgard's society seemed a little too hardcore for his liking if they hadn't appreciated all kinds of skills. "And if you ask me, magic's a lot cooler than punching someone in the face."

Peter paused to sip on his drink, half-nodding with a head tilt. "...Well, there's this thing called college. It's like high school, but harder. There's graduation for that too if you get through the four years." And judging by the face Peter made, it was something he wasn't too sure about. "That's what's next for me after this summer."

"Indeed," said Loki, with an appreciative smile. "It involves much more finesse. And imagination."

Loki listened as he spoke about college, blinking profusely at the face that his mortal friend made.

"Ah, like the seidr academies on Alfheim. We're building one on Asgard as well. That takes fifty years to even master healing, and a hundred to master sorcery. Your four years will pass by swiftly, and as dedicated as you are to saving lives, you will surely surpass expectations."

His phone made a pinging noise, an incoming text, which he took out of his pocket and looked at.

"Ah, I must return to Asgard," he said, tucking his phone away. "It's been a pleasure as always, Peter. I have faith you will succeed."

"That's really, really cool," Peter said, having thought for most of his life that things like magic academies were only found in books. It made him feel small in the scope of more eternal things, but he always figured everyone and everything had their place.

It was almost surprising that Loki's faith in him meant so much to him. Loki had weathered his fair share of chaos for centuries - and he was still there and standing. It made Peter feel like maybe he'd make it out all right too. "Thanks for coming," Peter said, giving him a wave and a grin. "I’ll text you if any art thieves pop back up."
