New Year's Eve Party
Who: Everyone
What: New Year's Eve Party
Where: American Museum of Natural History
When: New Year's Eve
Warnings: I hope not, but let me know
Status: Open to All! Please indicate in the subject line if your post is for a specific person or open to anyone.

The museum was closed to the public for the evening and only open to invited guests. Party goers could take advantage of the open bar, the passed hors d'oeuvres, and the table of pastries. Flutes of champagne were passed around in time for a toast at midnight.

Throwing a fancy party with virtually unlimited funds was a lot more fun that Darcy could have ever guessed. She was excited about the event and very hopeful that nothing insane would happen to ruin the night. Everyone deserved one night of fun and with any luck, the universe wouldn't send aliens or ninjas or something she couldn't begin to imagine to crash the party.

Darcy was pleased with the dress she'd bought on her shopping excursion and hoped that her date would appreciate it.

Oh, Darcy's date did appreciate that dress. Her curves were nice and lush and that dress caressed them fantastically - even if he also, simultaneously, thought that her out of the dress would be pleasant.

They'd just hang the garment up first, not simply leave it on the floor in a mad rush to get to where the banging part would happen - he was considerate like that.

Especially considerate as Mr. America, with the ass. He'd picked out a tux while borrowing Steve Rogers' brick shithouse physique, and he looked nice if he did say so himself. "Ma'am, I'm going to need to check your patriotism levels," he announced as he approached Darcy (it wasn't the aural velvet of an Aussie accent either, it was definitely Rogers' borrowed vocal chords too). "If you fail inspection, you will be punished accordingly."

There was something deliciously dirty hearing that kind of talk from Steve Rogers. Even when Darcy knew very well that it wasn't really Steve. She still would feel icky actually doing anything with Talos when he looked like someone that she knew and respected, but she had no objections to a little inappropriate commentary.

"What would you deem appropriately patriotic, Captain?" she asked.

Role-playing. It was the cherry on top of the chemical cocktail, a little something extra that made pheromones and lust so much fun. Everyone was into different things, sure, but Talos - being what he was - could slip into whatever face or persona he wanted. If Darcy wanted Rogers for the party, then she would get him.

He still found it kinda cute that she didn't want him to wear anyone else's face for more, uh, intimate activities. Not even Keller's face, which was his human default. Cute, but also nice. For some reason. A lot of people wouldn't have any qualms about banging a celebrity.

"Can you sing the Star-Spangled banner right now?" he asked in all seriousness, sliding an arm around her waist. "If not, I'll take a dance instead, so you can avoid punishment."

"I could, actually," Darcy said. High school chorus was good for something. Who knew. "But I think I'd prefer the dance." Depending on his definition of punishment, she might not want to avoid it, though this wasn't really the time or place to discuss that.

She rested a hand on his shoulder and leaned in close, though the height difference made it impossible for her to actually whisper in his ear. "We could discuss the terms of that punishment later though."

He helped her out, both arms going around Darcy and scooping her up a little - with these arms, he only needed one, but why not go all out? Then, smack, he planted a kiss on her cheek before setting her back down on dainty feet again.

"If you insist, ma'am," the Captain replied ever-so-gallantly. Let's not be fooled though, Talos was going to guess Rogers himself was really a freak in the sheets. But he wasn't about to spend too long thinking about it.

To the dance floor he went, and eased into something elegant enough to glide to with him leading. Unless Darcy decided she wanted to lead, then by all means. "It's a fun party, love," he said, slipping back into his own voice; it took effort to mimic someone else's voice and if he didn't have to, then he wouldn't - even if it probably sounded odd, Talos' accented timbre coming from Steve's body. "You did a nice job. A miracle you got everyone to loosen up."

Darcy was content to let him lead and she grinned up at him when he spoke in his own voice. "We all needed it," she said. "It's been a crazy couple of months." Between the new memories, the floods, and the crazy video game snafu, everyone could use a break. She was glad that they all seemed to be taking advantage of the party. Even Jane was there, which surprised her a little.

"Did you have a nice Christmas?" she asked. "Do anything special?" The holiday had never been a big deal for her, though she enjoyed Christine's low key gathering.

"It was nice, yeah - we don't have anything like that on Skrullos. Or I should say, since Skrullos no longer exists, my people don't even really know what Christmas is," Talos chuckled throatily, rocks in a tumbler. "It seems to be strictly an Earth thing. I liked it though, the Secret Santa thing was fun."

He'd gotten Natasha a stolen CIA gun (when you were him, it was easy to steal from the CIA) so he hoped that warmed the cockles of her heart. "Got a bunch of alien sex toys - I mean, how could you go wrong?" he asked rhetorically with a Mephistopheles sort of grin, twirling Darcy under his arm and bringing her back in. "How about you? You get to see your family, I hope?"

From what he gathered, it was meant to be a time for family - and food. Lots and lots of food, oy.

Alien sex toys sounded like they could be a lot of fun. Way more fun than talking about her family. "Nah, I haven't gone home for holidays in a long time," Darcy said. "My parents weren't all that great. I mean... they were fine, but we never did that whole close family thing." She shrugged it off. It didn't bother her at this point in her life, now that she was old enough to understand that all families were different.

"I went to visit Thor and Jane for Hanukkah," she said. "I think I ate my weight in latkes." Also not as much fun to talk about. "So alien sex toys, huh? Color me intrigued."

All families were indeed different. "So you spent some time with the family you built for yourself," he observed - and that wasn't a bad thing at all. He'd built a similar unit, with Blondie and Cyclops. They warmed the cockles of his heart. Even if a good portion of the time they wanted to kill each other. "And you get to ring in the new year with 'em too, so I'd say that's a win."

Fuck Darcy's parents for not being all that great - but she'd obviously turned out fine, no thanks to their help. She had a good job, a way to keep the lights on, and wasn't out snorting coke off of toilet seats. Plus she had good taste because she'd asked Talos to be her date, and that just said it all.

"I had a feeling you'd be curious about those," he laughed. "When you find me later, I'll show them off. But if you need to schmooze some more first, I get it." He'd just wander around looking like he loved America and shit - no problem there.

When there was a moment that Darcy wasn't busy, Loki approached. It would be bad form not to compliment the host of the festivities. This was the Midgardian equivalent of a royal function at the palace, only more lively and with much more interesting things to look at than squabbling noblemen. Hosting the party here was a stroke of genius.

"Hello, Miss Lewis," she said, as she approached. "I wanted to convey my congratulations to you. It's a lovely party."

There was a long moment of confusion before Darcy recognized the speech patterns of the woman and realized who she was. "I'm glad you think so, Loki," she said, rolling her eyes a little at his appearance. She supposed it was good that he hadn't also borrowed Cap's look. That might be difficult to explain.

"Why are you a hot chick this evening?" she asked. Because, yes, the woman in front of her was hot and even if Darcy knew who it was, she was going to pay a compliment.

Loki looked delighted that Darcy guessed so quickly, but she should have known better. The magicked journals her former self left behind were detailed, which made things easier in the event of suffering memory loss. Among other things, Darcy was noted as: Incredibly observant but also refreshingly, and amusingly, blunt.

When Loki figured out that being a hot chick didn't mean being overheated, she blushed a little.

"Thank you," she replied, visibly preening that someone else thought so. "I'm a shapeshifter. While a woman quite often, it's always been behind closed doors and kept secret. Tis the dawn of a new year, and so I meant to remedy that." She looked at what Darcy was wearing with an appreciative eye. "That is a beautiful dress. It compliments you perfectly."

Translated from Asgardian, that might mean 'You look hot too.'

Flirting with Loki was a terrible idea and not only because he was married to a woman who could break every bone in her body with one finger. Unfortunately, Darcy wasn't always known for her stellar life choices.

"So you enjoy the female form, huh? So do I. To appreciate, I mean." She assumed that Loki would catch her meaning there.

This might be a bad idea. She was married to a Valkyrie that she loved deeply, even if Brunnhilde had been incredibly busy for the later part of the year. Brun took being a regent seriously, remaining behind so everyone else could have an evening out. And while Loki did enjoy making her wife jealous, it was probably best not to get this particular mortal killed. First, because she actually enjoyed talking to Darcy, and second, meeting the business end of a Valkyrie's sword would generally be frowned down upon...by everyone currently under this roof.

To make matters even worse, she was staring down at that lacy bodice while Darcy spoke. What? I'm not dead. Eyes inherently look around at things. It's what they do. She's only admiring the dress. That's all. Liar. Oh, and here's your daily reminder that you miss your wife.

Loki coughed away that annoying lump in her throat before taking a fortifying drink of champagne. She quickly directed her full attention back up at Darcy's face.

"Trust me, I do appreciate that as well," she replied, with a voice as soft as the silk she was wearing. Perhaps it would be best to try talking about a different topic. Like who she noticed, earlier. "So. It seems the formerly missing Captain is your companion for this evening. That is quite the feat. Did the universe take but one look at you and simply melt into submission?"

Well then. If that was overheard, she might be sleeping on that nice green velvet settee she recently conjured. After it was thrown outside. Through a closed window. While lit on fire.

No matter how hot Loki might be as a woman, Darcy had no intentions of hooking up with him, scary wife or not. She could put the past behind her enough for them to be friends, but that was it. Still, it was pretty much in her nature to flirt.

She laughed at his question. "Something like that," she said. Since she was unsure how many people knew about Talos's ability, she wasn't going to admit who her actual companion was. "And we have plans later." Hopefully no one would tell Peggy Carter that Darcy was absconding with her man. Since it wasn't really her man and Darcy had no desire to die.

"Are you flying solo this evening?"

Oh noooo, there would be none of those hooks. Being married, she could visually appreciate others and some flirting was potentially deadly fun, but nothing more. The journals mentioned a destructively tempestuous pairing, and where Darcy apparently flirted a lot, she engaged in what Midgard called pushing the envelope. History would not repeat itself. And when those 'plans' with the fake Captain came up, she pursed her lips a little. She wasn't sure what the appeal of the real Captain was. While visually appealing, he was so utterly upstanding and morally righteous that the real deal would make her snooze before anything fun ever got started. The saving grace was this wasn't the real one - it was another shapeshifter, which was interesting - and thus Darcy would surely be more entertained.

"What luck. I'm certain you will have a grand time," she impishly replied with a smirk, before nearly resembling a deflating balloon. "I gather flying solo means asking if I am unaccompanied this evening. Yes, and I will return home soon after the mid-night."

If not slightly before. There was that annoying sensation of a lump of emotion forming in her throat again. A quick sip of champagne didn't make it go away. It was a sign that it was better to excuse herself, having already offered congratulations to the party hostess, and retreat to a safe distance.

"Well, it is a party to be proud of," she told Darcy, the epitome of politeness, "but I do not want to further monopolize your time. Although, it would be nice to talk again. Perhaps we might do so over a few mochas?"

She really liked mochas. Preferably the iced ones.

"Sure, that sounds great," Darcy said, surprised to realize that she actually meant it. Becoming friends with Loki wasn't something she ever saw coming, but hey, she hadn't made it this far in life without being willing to roll with the punches. "Enjoy the rest of the party. Happy New Year."

She rested one hand on Loki's shoulder, leaning in to press a quick kiss to her cheek. "There's Tony anyway. He owes me a dance." And for some reason, she hadn't really seen him around much this evening.

Loki smiled before giving Darcy a kiss on the cheek too. It didn't feel at all uncomfortable, and it was the same type of affection she noted when friends parted company from cafes in Paris and Rome.

"Happy New Year, Darcy. When we next meet, do tell about how the evening goes."

There was a sly wink before retreating, leaving Darcy to dance the night away.

Natasha was dressed to impress in this ombre number and had dyed her hair into a dark auburn to avoid clashing with the dress colors. She appeared at Darcy's side in a moment where she wasn't occupied and offered her a champagne flute refill along with a dazzling smile. "Hey, friend, this party's definitely got some shine to it. You did a great job putting it all together."

"Thanks," Darcy said, gratefully accepting the flute with a smile, taking a long sip before she actually looked at Natasha. "Damn, girl, you look hot."

Idly, she wondered how open-minded the King of Wakanda was, because spending a night with the two of them could be a damn good time. Not tonight, obviously, since she was otherwise committed, but maybe if she was really good, it would happen eventually. "Here's hoping the new year is a little less insane than the past one."

Natasha gave a little twirl and grinned. "Had to dress for the occasion after all," waving a hand around at the lavishly decorated museum around them. "It wouldn't do to have the exhibits outshine the attendees."

She raised her glass to that and took a drink. "Yes, less having to save the world on a monthly basis would be ideal. Hard to sneak in well deserved anything with that tension of always being on call."

Darcy was pretty sure that no setting could look better than the Avengers. They were all ridiculously good looking. Honestly, it made her wonder a little about Fury's selection criteria when he'd been recruiting. Maybe there was more to her straight-laced boss than was obvious.

"The world doesn't realize how lucky they are to have you," she said, not including herself in that. Her contributions were minimal compared to the life risking things the others did and she would never put herself in that category.

"And we're lucky to have you. Without you and everyone else keeping us sane in the down times, I'm not sure we'd be functioning very well," Natasha said with a laugh.

There was a lot they owed to everyone behind the scenes on many fronts. They may not get the spotlight and the glory but they were as essential as the rest of the Avengers. Like tonight, it wouldn't have happened without nudging from Darcy and they definitely needed these kinds of things. Probably needed them more often honestly.

This was all way too mushy for Darcy and she ducked her head for a brief moment. "So, where's that hot man of yours?" she asked. Who cared if their conversation wouldn't pass the Bechdel Test? Darcy was kind of shallow sometimes and T'Challa was a fine looking man.

"And did he bring any of his kickass lady warriors with him?" Just because she had plans with Talos didn't mean she was off limits.
