Disguised as a legit celebration/benefit for America's veterans, the surprise birthday party for Steve is kept as lowkey as possible...considering it's Captain America.

Back in the day Bucky could have his pick of ladies. Steve always figured one would manage to settle him down. Everything changed with the war, of course. In these modern times Bucky didn't seem to be interested in any kind of relationship with hardly anyone, let alone chasing the ladies again. Steve hoped that would change at some point. He wanted his best pal to be happy.

"Tony helped me pick it out," he said. Not just any ring would do for his gal.

The box was tucked away again. "During the fireworks." He looked a bit sheepish as he shrugged.

The mention of Tony caused him to remember Howard's death and Steve and him fighting Iron Man in Siberia. Things drastically changed after that fall from the train, losing his arm, falling into HYDRA's clutches, and a lot of mind warping retraining from Russian HYDRA operatives to turn him into the perfect mindless killer. The mission was everything. All else was peripheral and distracted attention from mission objectives.

It wasn't something that was going to translate or relate well in any kind of romantic relationship. It was also the furthest thing he wanted, since he was choosing to focus on the path toward being a semi-stable old man. With a whole lot of PTSD he was wading through.

Honestly, Bucky was happiest talking and joking with his best bud. He felt at home in places that most people would think were a flop house, but Bucky thought that was a palace in comparison to some of the places he woke up in.

It made him happy that Steve had come into his own. That his best bud found the perfect gal to go have a picket fence with.

Now Bucky just needed to make sure he kept eyes and ears out, since Captain America showing up at the Vets Benefit on Governor's Island (even if there were multiple Steves) was already trending, thanks to everyone having a phone. And a fireworks display was one of the best covers for a shot to be fired, ever.

It worried him, but Steve seemed at peace and not worried about that. That's the way it should be, for most people, and Bucky was going to make sure it stayed that way.

He nodded at Steve and said, "She'll say yes. Congratulations, Steve. Now you'll never forget the engagement date."

He gave Steve a lopsided smile, like it was a good idea to combine the two things as a date to remember.

	Steve's grin was maybe the happiest Bucky would have ever seen on his old friend. Only Bucky would know how rare such an expression was. "Good," he said as he reached out to clasp Buck on the shoulder in return. "Thanks. It means a lot to me." Especially since Bucky wasn't exactly a social butterfly. Despite not being a social butterfly, it was good to see Steve that happy. It was rare. Bucky couldn't help but smile a little as well, proud of his friend and glad they were here together.

"Hey, it means a lot to me too. Thanks for making me your best man." He didn't know what that entailed anymore, but he'd look it up. "I'll drink a beer for you in solidarity."

Not that it did much to him at all. Even if he only got a super soldier knock-off, drinking wasn't as fun as it used to be.

"Will do," Bucky said, with a shrug. He liked the taste of it, but yeah, it didn't do anything much. Other than comfort for the taste buds and the faintest buzz for a few minutes. Steve would be everyone's designated driver, if Thor did arrange a bachelor party, since Bucky would probably disappear like a ghost at some point.

Bucky made a little toasting motion with a half full bottle of beer.
