"No, no we didn't," Sam agreed with a smile as he shifted his glass to the other hand so he could tuck Peggy's arm against him. As much as he enjoyed trolling Steve, he wouldn't have let anyone plan a spectacle that would put him at the center of attention in public. "And I'm glad I finally got to spend some time with you. I'm afraid to think of what Steve might be saying about me.

He was joking. Mostly.

But knowing you were there to support him when I was..." Dead. Dead was the word. But she didn't really wanna use that word at all today. So she hoped it went without saying. She took a deep breath before she continued. "To know that you were there for him then, means more than anything I think. Too often people are too distracted by broad shoulders and a chiseled jaw to remember he's still Steve the person underneath."

She couldn't help but let her smile grow. "Not that I'm complaining about the shoulders or jaw, for the record."

Sam laughed. "I'd be worried about you if you were." Even as a heterosexual man, Sam could appreciated Steve's shoulders and jaw for what they were.

"In all fairness, he and Natasha showed up at my door one morning and I'm a sucker." Still mostly joking. Sam had no regrets about opening the door or agreeing to help them. Working with veterans was rewarding and fulfilling and all that, but being part of the Avengers was the best gig ever.

"Oh that does sound like a very them thing to do. That was when he found out Bucky was alive." She took another deep breath and shook her head. "I can't imagine having to keep a straight head during that. Not with how hard he took it." She paused for a moment before smiling up at Sam again. "Like I said, I'm glad you were with him when he needed strength from others. You're a good man, Sam."

	It was also when they found out that HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD. Sam wasn't going to mention that though, because he didn't know how much Peggy had been told about the future of the organization she helped build and certainly did not be the one to drop that bombshell. There were more than a few files missing from the boxes she had been given to read on, to catch up with where SHIELD was at and their current goals. Peggy noticed immediately but was biding her time before confronting anyone over it. If there was something to be hidden from her, she would rather find it on her own than demand it from someone who didn't wish to share in the first place.

Hydra infecting Shield like a cancer was something she had been vaguely made aware of, but not on the true scale of it. Which was going to end up being a problem.

"Speaking of trying, on my walk this morning I saw an ad for a-" She cleared her throat as if she had practiced saying it so she didn't sound stupid. "A cronut? I think someone is going to need to explain to me the point of that. I've been trying to figure it out and it is completely lost on me."
