Disguised as a legit celebration/benefit for America's veterans, the surprise birthday party for Steve is kept as lowkey as possible...considering it's Captain America.

Steve was actually enjoying himself. The vets gave him thanks instead of birthday wishes. That was great! He was glad to see so many of them here and that the benefit was a success.

Of course the biggest reason he was enjoying himself just left lipstick on his cheek. He smiled down to her as he put his arm around Peggy's waist. "Maybe. Keep trying to earn it and I'll let you know."

"Oh you know I loved a challenge." Peggy tucked herself into his side and observed Steve and the others around them. She didn't want to attract anymore attention to herself or to him, seeing how they both felt the same way about it.

Once the people around them started to mingle on, she moved to stand in front of him, her red lips drinking from her beer bottle before she reached up with her empty hand and cupped his cheek. She'd thought about wearing something modern to celebrate but she ended up picking out a dark blue sundress with white stars all over it and red shoulder sleeves. "You're enjoying yourself." It was a statement more than a question. "That is all I wanted out of today. For you to enjoy whatever they threw together." She chuckled a little and winked. "I had nothing at all to do with it."

She could be wearing paperbags and Steve would think she was beautiful.

"I am," he confirmed before kissing her hair. "I think for the first time in a very long time I'm going to remember this birthday with a smile."

Ahem. Move it along, Rogers. His inner voice was an asshole.

"So I found us a place to watch the fireworks," he mumbled. "Bobbi Morse saved it for us and promised no one would be there but us." Dusk was full on and the show started at full dark. He'd like to be there before it got dark.

"We'll have to keep those smiles comin, big guy." She leaned up and kissed his jaw before nodding in answer to his words. She'd almost followed it up with 'for 101 more years' but the realization he was likely going to live that long and have to see her die... once again... hit too hard in her chest so she held it in and tucked herself in closer to him. "Lead the way, darling." She said intimately towards his ear, reaching down to hold his hand as he led her wherever he wished. In truth, she would follow him off the edge of the world if he asked... and she didn't have a better idea.

The kissed put a small bit of color to Steve's cheeks. Public displays of affection. People will never let him live it down.

"C'mon," he said then began to lead her through the crowd with mumbled excuse me's. Finally they reached a small grotto by the water. Small trees surrounded the area giving them a decent amount of privacy. It had a great view of where the fireworks would go off.

Peggy's eyes widened at little when they were finally at her spot and she looked at him with a smirk. "Not sure you could have picked a more romantic place if you tried, Darling." She stepped away a couple feet, their hands not breaking so both of their arms were extended toward each other. "I love it." She tugged him over to her and finally let go of his hand, wrapping her arms around him tightly as she looked up at him, hands running up and down his back. "Happy birthday, my love."

Since it hadn't been him who picked the spot he just smiled. She was beautiful. Stunning. Steve couldn't stop looking at her. As he got closer his eyes looked solidly into hers.

That was when his heart started pounding. A bad case of the nerves overwhelmed him so that when the first rocket went off in the air he startled.

He chuckled as he ducked his head. He kept hold of her left hand while he rubbed his hair with the right. "Listen ah..." Another mortar shot into the air to the cheers of the people still in attendance.

"You know I love you," he said as he looked into her face. "There was never anyone before or after you. I never thought I'd find you again, but we've been given another chance and I'm not going to waste it."

As he lowered himself down on one knee he pulled the little black box from his inside pocket. "Margaret Carter, would you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?" He opened the box to show her the ring.

She'd always been drawn to his eyes. They were one of, if not the only, thing that didn't change after the serum. When he looked at her like that, it always reminded her of the way they had to communicate without words during meetings, or the looks they gave each other when they were alone in one of their tents before one of them chickened out and bolted back in their own time.

Peggy's eyebrows raised a little when he jumped, not having seen him do that in a very long time. But it only made her look at him fondly, stomach turning with butterflies when he ducked his head. Then he touched his hair and she knew something was up. His only obvious tell.

"I lov-" She stopped when he kept speaking and felt her heart start to race. "Ste..." She stopped again when he started to kneel, knowing immediately what was happening but not being able to prepare for it in such a split second. All she could do was suck in a breath when she saw the ring. He's gotten her breathless and speechless all at once.

Her eyes flicked from it to him and back to it and when they flicked back to his face a second time, she was misty. "Of course, Darling, yes, a hundred times yes." Nodding excitedly, she held out her hand for him to put it on her finger. A couple stray tears falling as her hand started to tremble. "I love you so much." She was practically weak at the knees.

He had never seen her like this. So excited, emotional. Maybe even vulnerable. The fact that she showed it to him, that maybe he even brought this part of her out made him kind of proud.

With fingers that shook only a little bit Steve slid the ring onto her left hand then stood to immediately pull her into a hug. His heart pounded in his chest and he was certain she could feel it. It didn't matter. He pulled back just enough to lean down to kiss her.

His Peg. His best gal, now fiance.

Even when she had done this before with Fred, it wasn't like this. Nothing had ever been like it was with Steve. Colors were brighter and music sounded better, food, the fresh air, birds singing, all of it was made better because of him. No one, not even her brother, had seen her the way she was with him. It made her heart ache that he wasn't there now to see her this happy, like he'd always wanted her to be.

There was nothing in the world that she loved more than feeling Steve's heart beat. And her own heart matched pace with his as she kissed him, hands going to cup both sides of his face, the ring fitting perfect on her finger.

She kissed him deeply, even letting her tongue swipe over his bottom lip before she pulled away, panting. "This isn't a dream right? I'm not going to wake up back at home with you gone am I?"

Normally, the tongue thing would have him scooping her up in his arms and marching her back to their apartment. This time, however, he was more emotional than physical. He never thought he'd see this day. Not after waking up 70 years later. Steve wanted to soak this moment in.

"You aren't dreaming." Steve smiled at her without letting her go. "You aren't going to wake up at home." He smoothed the back of his fingers across her cheek. "You're gonna wake up here next to me."

She did love to pull that trick on him in public. There were a few times where she wondered if it would be worth it to not make it back to the apartment but those thoughts didn't always come from a clear brain either. As soon as he spoke, she sighed in relief, as if she was a tiny bit afraid he was going to vanish from between her fingers like sand.

"Here?" She said, he eyes closing as she leaned into his hand. "It has been a long while since we spent the night outside alone together." She giggled for a moment before looking up at him. "Do you remember when I wrangled you into staying up all night to make Dum Dum Dugan think there was a ghost haunting his tent?"
