Who: Everyone
What: 4th of July/America's Ass' surprise birthday party
When: 4th of July DUH
Where: Governor's Island
Rating: Don't do anything Rogers wouldn't do! *shakes finger*

Disguised as a legit celebration/benefit for America's veterans, the surprise birthday party for Steve is kept as lowkey as possible...considering it's Captain America.

You know the drill!

Dr. Strange was waiting where the fireworks were being set up, dressed in casual t-shirt and khaki shorts, running shoes on. It was easy to change your clothes with magic at your disposal, and he could be caped up and ready for trouble if anything happened.

Right now, though, he was waiting for when the fireworks display started so he could play the part of Gandalf at Bilbo's Eleventy First birthday party, and turn the fireworks into dragons and trees, et cetera.

That he remembered that made him feel like the biggest nerd on Governor's Island.

In honour of the Fourth, Christine was wearing the reddest lipstick she could find. Okay, so she usually liked red lipstick, but this time she had a valid reason to look like a whore (or so her mother liked to remind her).

Because she came directly from work, she was still wearing scrubs, even if her hair was now down, and she was wearing a t-shirt instead of her top. She'd thought she might miss the event, and was thankful when she actually was able to leave when she was done. Of course, this meant she'd been awake on/off for about three days and was running on low.

What was sleep when there was socializing to be done? A coffee in hand, she marveled at everything around until she found Stephen, who as usual was hanging back. "You know," she said, coming up to him and putting an arm around his waist to pull him into a hug, "we're going to have to talk about the shocking lack of tan you have. I almost complimented you on your white pants."

Stephen looked down at his legs and let out a scoffing sound, even as his arm went around her shoulders. No matter what, they were friends first and foremost. He wasn't sure how long the additional benefits would last, since they trended toward on again, followed by off again. For now, though, he wasn't shying away. It looked like she might need proppped up after a long shift.

"I was hoping to blind everyone," he told her, "so I could escape. Looks like the plan's almost working. Another month or two in the libraries should do it."

When he pulled her closer, Christine took that as a cue to snuggle in, even going so far as to briefly close her eyes when her cheek connected with his chest. She usually followed whatever mood he was in when it came to public affection, since he was the one that was usually a bit more reticent anyways.

"I could get behind escaping," she said, taking the last sip of her coffee. How it went so fast was a mystery. She didn't feel any more awake. "Maybe we should go somewhere tropical. The Maldives are lovely this time of year." Cue a laugh and an eye roll. "Just kidding, I have no idea where the Maldives are, what their usual weather patterns are like, and how much money that would cost."

Although she was sure he would know. Why did she always give him opportunities to show how smart he was?

He was usually very reticent, but this was another quiet respite. He cast spells - unspoken of - to make sure that no demonic surges were in New York. It wasn't exactly keeping tabs on Wanda or any changes but it was...keeping tabs on Wanda and any changes. He didn't go announcing that, and he was ready to go in an instant. Every day he went to one of the rebuilt Sanctums, trying to piece together old tapestries to find a way to remove that sort of presence without force. He really needed to speak to both Wanda and Vision, to see what they wanted to do. If they wanted to keep the child, then he had to work carefully. Or go into a period of watchful waiting.

Work never left him, but these people were also his friends. And Stephen had few friends. He didn't want them left at risk, so theories and possible solutions were always whirring around in his head. Even at a picnic benefit.

"Probably about three thousand dollars and considering it's near Sri Lanka? Tropical comes to mind," he replied, not even looking like he was putting much thought to it. "It's easier with portals. When things calm down, if they ever do, we'll go for an afternoon."

He hoped things would, but they never seemed to for very long. Usually something good like this preceded something bad happening.

Portals? She almost asked a question, but of course he meant portals. She was slowly starting to understand that there was no sense being shocked or anything anymore. Things were never as they seemed.

She also felt this was like a nice respite though, and was waiting for the other foot to drop. It was how life went anyways. Still .. that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy this.

"I also don't know where Sri Lanka is," she said, lowering her voice to a husky level. "Want me to say wrong things and you correct me? The national language of Cuba is Chinese." She went up on her toes and gave him a kiss before laughing. "That was a really hard sentence to say. Even I know the language is Cuban."

"By the mystic moons of Munnopor, please stop," Stephen said, almost laughing at her and trying to keep a straight face. Admittedly, the husky tone reminded him of the other evening and that was something better left behind closed doors. Not during a picnic.

He looked around and then muttered in a low, deep voice, "You know I like correcting you. Can't you wait until after the fireworks?"

Her fingers tapped around her empty coffee cup and she leaned a little into him. She liked how his voice got low as well.

It was also nice to hear him laugh a bit. "Is this you telling me I'm allowed in your presence tonight? I'll drag out my old organic chem textbooks and I can be wrong all night long, baby." With a wink, Christine straightened up a bit and brushed her hair back from her face. "I'm guessing you'll still be here then if I disappear and socialize for a bit? The coffee has finally kicked in, and I see some little flags I should steal. Be patriotic or something."

Almost laughing. Almost. As he leaned into her for a moment and his arm slowly dropped from her shoulders.

"I'll still be here," he told her, "and yes, you should bring the text books. Even if I remember everything in them." He gave her a look like she was 12 years old sometimes. "Don't steal flags while people are looking. I doubt it's a criminal offense anyway, since they'll be picked up tomorrow and recycled."

By recycled, he imagined they'd be donated to a Vets cemetery to be placed on the graves, no doubt.

Natasha had already dug up all the info on the location for this party before she'd stepped foot on the island. Once she'd arrived, she'd done a slow walk around to make sure she had a good lay of the land. On her way toward some food and drink, she spotted Strange under a tree and wandered her way to him. "Have any magical shenanigans to contribute to the celebrations later?" she teased.

He didn't doubt that someone like the Black Widow would not only know every in and out on the island, but have contingency plans in case of emergency.

"Doctoring the fireworks," Stephen told Natasha, a hint of a smile on his face. "Not that anyone will know it's me."

"But I will know and that'll make it more fun," she winked conspiratorially at him. Natasha wondered if it'd be a flashy display or something more subtle then. It was hard to tell some days which way Strange would lean. He was blunt to a fault and didn't partake in the pleasantries of the every day casually.

She gazed at the crowds around them. "It's amazing how giving people food and a distraction practically makes us invisible in the crowd."

It would be something the veterans could tell the grand-kids about, whether the vets were young or old. At the very least, they could wonder if there was some LSD in the punch. If there was one thing that a master of Eldritch Magic could manipulate, it was fire and light.

"It'll be our secret," Stephen said, with a conspiratorial wink back at Natasha. He looked around and had to admit, it was true. People were milling around in their own social circles for the most part. "Not a bad thing. For people who don't want to be noticed, at least."

"Yes, and we'll be noticing the other folks that don't want to be noticed." The ones that wanted to cause trouble. It'd be a fool's errand if anyone had those intentions here of all places. Between the vets and the superheroes, there wouldn't be much left to collect one the dust settled.

She hmmed to herself as she glanced at the large amount of pyrotechnics set up and ready to go for the show later that night. "I've been told I need to relax more. I'm not sure they understand that's not wired into my DNA."

"I don't think that relaxation is part of the job description," Stephen said with a sudden clipped laugh and a shake of his head.

He was keeping an eye on them himself, so he could begin casting spells as each set were lit. And to make sure that no one messed with any of them.

"I hear that all of the time. I'm a strong proponent of doing what needs to be done."

Simple as that.

"Tell that to everyone who keeps saying I need a vacation or to get a life," Natasha shot back. Between Steve and Sam and Clint in his better days, they were all wanting her to be normal. Normal was always going to be the last thing she would ever be.

"I'm sure even if I took one, I'd find trouble regardless. It comes with the territory after all." There was no off switch despite what people thought. Sure, they compartmentalized well, but why bother? Humans weren't meant to live shutting one part of their life off from the other anyway.

Normal was subjective. Even Stephen knew that, so he gave her a very knowing look indeed when she said that statement that every content and devoted workaholic despises hearing. It was usually better to maintain focus than get distracted. He even though Christine was a distraction, but they were so...non-relationship oriented...that it would never go beyond friends with itch scratching benefits.

"That might keep things interesting. Even if taking a vacation is a monumental waste of time." He thought about that. "If you need a quiet getaway for an hour or two, there's a few places on Earth that I could portal you to. Places where there isn't anyone for hundreds of miles, so trouble would have to veer out of its way to find you."

The least he could do was offer.

"Hello Doctor Strange," She said formally, before stepping closer and looking him over. "I don't think I've ever seen you in normal clothes, you look very nice." She nodded back towards all the food and drink that had been brought in. "Are you allowed to drink or does that make doing magic more difficult?"

His casual clothes were slouchy and tended toward greys, navy blues, and khaki. It wasn't exactly attire meant for a public speaking engagement, and that's when Stephen knew she was being overly polite, like most English people were. Even Peggy Carter, who seemed as blunt and no-nonsense as he did.

"Thanks. And no, no drinking," he said. He was ever vigilant when it came to the knowledge that he needed to have a clear head, and a one drink minimum was all he allowed himself at very sparing intervals. He allowed himself that during the wedding reception. "It's good seeing you too, Miss Carter. How are you, and how is Steve? Enjoying himself?"

Today was more about Steve and supporting him than being Agent Peggy Carter, per se. She considered it a day off to just be considered his partner and less of a formidable spy. Thought she did appreciate the respect that was shown to her, that would never get old.

"I'm well, thank you. Oh yes, he's enjoying himself which means I am too. He's the most important part of today. My job is to make him relax and enjoy himself, a very tough one, as you can tell." It was impossible to wipe the smile off her face so she didn't even try.

"This conversation is vaguely reminiscent of one I just had, where it's virtually impossible to get most of us to relax. Not when there's so much at stake, so often."

He nodded to her with a lopsided smile, certain that she above all people understood that.

"But it is good to have someone to lean on," he added, noting the way she smiled. "It's everyone else's turn to give something back to him, after doing so much for the rest of us."

"I think between the wedding and the time jump and now another get together so closely timed... all of just feel it's about time for something to hit the fan, as they say." She sighed sweetly and nodded at his last comment. "He deserves it more than anyone, I believe. But I am admittedly biased."

"That feeling is mutual," Dr. Strange replied, feeling very much like that was the case. "Bias aside, he's saved the world more than once. Everyone knows it, whether he likes it or not."

For someone who once liked to hear the sound of his own voice, his life changed so drastically that he realized he didn't need that anymore. Even if he wasn't above grandstanding before creatures capable of rendering him into smashed molecules.

"I know it's a definite not," he told Ms. Carter. "He's a good guy that found himself in odd circumstances. I think everyone realizes that also."

Peggy laughed softly and nodded. "I knew he was meant for great things from the moment I met him." Normally Peggy wasn't one to go on about Steve or their relationship but this whole day had really gotten her emotional about it.

"I'd never seen anyone try so hard to do good, even when no one else thought they could or should. It was and still is infectious. Like no matter, what if he says you'll win the fight you're in, you just... know he's right." She shook her head a little and scolded herself mentally for going off on a tangent. She woo'd softly at herself and felt her cheeks tint slightly red. "Clearly I need to slow down on the beer and perhaps have a lemonade instead."

It was a well known fact that when Captain America spoke, people listened. It was that ability to bolster spirits and encourage others that made everyone look up to Steve Rogers, and follow him into any sort of battle. Even one that looked like a losing battle.

"I don't think you're drunk," Dr. Strange told her, "just honest."

He looked back to the fireworks, which the techs were finalizing their checks to make sure it all went off without a hitch. He should keep a close eye on what they were doing, just to make sure he knew where the last charges were set up for the finale. While he was doing that, a glass of lemonade appeared in Peggy Carter's hand.

"You'll have to excuse me while I go look at something. Enjoy the lemonade," he said with a nod to her, already starting to walk in the direction of a better vantage point.
