Who: Sam Wilson and Carol Danvers
What: Telling stories (and probably some fanboying)
When: Saturday evening
Rating/Warnings: Green/likely to contain Captain Marvel spoilers

Every airman was regaled with the horror stories of atrocities suffered by those who went before them. It was a right of passage and occasionally it was difficult to tell which stories were true, which were highly embellished, and which were simply urban legends. The story of Captain Carol Danvers and Wendy Lawson was one that was generally spoken in hushed whispers and most new recruits leaned towards it being either highly embellished or an urban legend. Sam had heard it during basic and then didn't give it much thought until aliens attacked Manhattan. Then he wondered if maybe some of the more fantastical elements that were occasionally bandied about might actually have some truth to them.

It went out of his head again when he got caught up in the adventures of Steve Rogers though and he never thought to ask anyone if it was true, so when he actually met Carol Danvers on the network, he'd been equal parts shocked and thrilled. And he knew for sure that he'd probably made an absolute fool of himself.

He was pleased that she'd agreed to meet him for a drink though and he hoped that he would be able to avoid completely geeking out when he met her in person. Maria Rambeau was one of his heroes, having broken so many barriers for both women and people of color in the Air Force, and he knew that Carol was her best friend.

When she entered the small pub he'd found near the apartment building, he stood and managed to stop himself from saluting. "Captain," he said. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"When you say all this, do you mean Earth?" Sam asked. A few years ago, that would have been a ridiculous question to ask someone, but he'd seen a lot since then and she mentioned being on another planet when they talked on the network. That would explain why she felt lost. He'd never visited another planet though he guessed they were probably a lot different from here.

He waited until she sat down to take his own seat again. "I wasn't sure what you'd want to drink, but I was thinking about getting a pitcher of beer."

"Uh yeah, I mean Earth. It's a long story, but I haven't been here in a long time." She didn't want to freak anyone out about how long she'd been gone, or that she was from space, but it looked like people were taking that kind of thing really well here. That's why she didn't seem afraid to say anything. Besides she had a lot of cool powers, how was she supposed to hide that.

Carol sat down then and grinned. "Absolutely a pitcher of beer. Perfect." One of those things that she missed from being here, for sure.

Sam returned her grin as he waved over their server and requested a pitcher of whatever they had on tap as long as it wasn't light.

"Did you come back on your own or were you dragged here against your will by whatever weird dimensional thing that I'm pretty sure only Banner and Stark have any hope of understanding is going on?" he asked. "Actually, I guess the better question is did you leave of your own free will?" He knew that she'd mentioned being kidnapped, but wasn't entirely sure how long that had lasted.

"Dragged here against my will technically? But I was on my way here anyway. I got a page.." That sounded so lame when she knew what year it was and the fact that no one had used a pager in like twenty years. "The last time I was here, was the 90s. We had pagers. Fury paged me, so I was on my way when I got sucked here."

That was the easiest way to explain it. "Okay so it's a lot of back and forth, so I'll make this as short as I can. I was flying planes with Lawson when we got shot down by some unknown enemies. Turns out Lawson was a Kree. An alien named Mar-Vell. She was working on a lightspeed engine that was powered by the Tesseract. You guys know about that right? The Kree killed her for being a traitor before she could blow the engine, since that's what they were after. So they killed her, and then I blew the engine. I don't remember much after that, but they took me to Hala. Blowing the engine gave me.. powers."

At least her technological references were slightly more modern than the ones Steve was making when they first met. "Damn, that's messed up," Sam said. He couldn't help being intrigued though. "What kind of powers?"

People having special abilities was hardly new to Sam after years of working with Steve and Wanda. "And how'd you meet Fury?" Because there had to be a story there if he paged her after meeting her in the 90s.

Oh just slightly more advanced. At least she knew what a cellphone was. Not to mention that she had been on a planet where technology was way more advanced than Earth's. "Uh, I can fly and I can shoot photon blasts out of my hands." That was the short and condensed version of that.

"I was chasing some Skrulls who escaped onto your planet, they were looking for someone. I crash landed into a Blockbuster.." Whatever that was. They weren't around any more. "And someone called in SHIELD. He came to take me in, until he realized I was from space and there were shapeshifting aliens around. Then we just kind of .. bonded. Buddy cop style."

"You and Fury. Buddy cop style." Sam couldn't help but laugh at the mental image. It was nearly impossible to imagine Fury being anything resembling relaxed. Or funny. Then again, Sam wasn't a cute blonde, so maybe the man had layers that he just hadn't seen.

He did find it interesting that Fury knew about aliens long before Thor crash landed or Loki attacked though. "You can fly without a contraption like I use?" he asked. "That makes me jealous, not even gonna lie."

Okay maybe it did sound kind of ridiculous, when she said it out loud like that. "Yeah, I mean he went out of his way to help me instead of turning me in so.. I owe him a lot." Everyone that she talked to said that Fury wasn't anything like he used to be. It made her wonder what happened in the last twenty years. Nothing good, that was for sure.

Carol was not sure what she could do about that, but if she could get him to relax a little, she would be okay with that. "I can, yeah. Oh I can do a lot of things that will make you jealous," she said with a smirk.

Sam leaned forward a little at her words. "Is that so?" he asked. "Like what?"

It was fascinating to hear other people's stories, especially when they were intriguing like Carol's seemed to be. That was one of the reasons he enjoyed his work with the veterans groups back in DC.

The smirk on her face was pretty much plastered there. "Well I could show you, but I think I'd destroy the place and maybe scare the hell out of everyone in here. And I think from what I heard from the wizard, that's a bad idea? Like he said something about telling everyone I'm from Comic Con."

Whatever that was. Carol still didn't get it really.

"But I can shoot photon blasts out of my hands. And I'm extremely strong. Oh and I glow." She winked, if only to tease him a little bit. Maybe she was teasing about all the powers, maybe she wasn't.

It took a moment for Sam to realize that she was talking about that Strange dude though he had no idea why he would suggest telling people she was from Comic Con. That didn't even make sense. It wasn't like the public didn't know about the Avengers.

He was easily distracted by her comment about glowing though and he let out a little laugh. "Oh really now?" he said. "That sounds like something I need to see. Not here." Because she was right that she would probably scare people.

Yeah she didn't get it either. But maybe they weren't out and proud here? They hadn't been when she'd been here last, but then that was twenty years ago. They would have to ask Dr. Strange about whether or not anyone actually knew who they were around here. It was a little hard to keep quiet, right?

"Then as soon as we're done drinking, I will show you outside." She couldn't help but wiggle her eyebrows slightly. Carol was pretty bad at flirting, at least she thought so.

"I'm going to hold you to that," Sam said with a chuckle. He wasn't entirely sure if she was flirting or not and it didn't matter much to him either way because he was enjoying getting to know her.

Besides, if she was flirting, he certainly wasn't about to mention it to Steve. Then he'd never hear the end of it.

"Just you wait," Carol replied with a grin. She took another sip of her drink and settled back. "I'm really glad that places like this aren't that different from when I was here last." She was sure there were other places that were probably a little more upscale or whatever, but she preferred the places that were familiar to her.

"Okay, so tell me whatever the hell I've missed in the last twenty years. I got some filled in, but y'know.. everyone forgets at least one thing."

Sam took a long drink from his glass. "Oh, man, well, that's a lot," he said. "I'll stick to the highlights though." Which was basically all the things that involved Steve and the other Avengers.
