Turns out Lawson was a Kree. An alien named Mar-Vell. She was working on a lightspeed engine that was powered by the Tesseract. You guys know about that right? The Kree killed her for being a traitor before she could blow the engine, since that's what they were after. So they killed her, and then I blew the engine. I don't remember much after that, but they took me to Hala. Blowing the engine gave me.. powers."
