There are Shadows and then there are Shadows
Who: Tenshi & Reaper (NPCs)
Where: Inside Mia's Head
When: Evening Friday, Apr. 3
What: The two of them discuss Phoenix's impending visit.
Reaper looked up at a sky that was rosy, like blood in water, and a sun glittering like a diamond. Tenshi stood just out of reach, watching the way wind boiled its way toward them, sparking like fire but certainly made of no such thing. Red dust, glass shards, and wind to scatter it forward.
"It's coming again," he noted mildly, moving his focus from the diamond sun to one of several glass towers already starting to crumble and crush under the force of the wind.
"She'll lose her progress," Tenshi heaved a sigh, trying not to let her face show her disappointment. "Lost again."
"Yes, lost again," he agreed with her, reaching out to put one arm around her. Then he buried his face in her hair. "We cannot continue to go through this."
"I don't like the idea of that woman in here. You've not met her as I have," the two had fought over the idea of Phoenix coming into the shattered wasteland of Mia's mind. "I do not think anything good can come of this. You know as well as I..."
"I know as well as you that she cannot continue her existence this way. With this," the wind was nearly upon them with its deadly weight of shattered glass. "The constant loss of her progress. Unable to even speak the names of those she has lost," he turned his back to the wind, sheltering her with his body as he was wont to do when these things broke everything in sight. "Beloved, we risk all or we risk nothing."
"This is not gambling; this is her life. How do we know an outsider will not make this worse? I cannot stand to lose her."
"Perhaps you should have thought about that before you decided to hang yourself, my dear."
Their forms were enveloped by the howling of the wind, glass striking through them but leaving no marks. The glass towers, Mia's links to the outside world, were once again crushed under their own weight leaving behind nothing more than twisted blackened metal and shattered glass. Then it simply rolled on, the demon wind, carrying bits of memory along with it.
"You left us both," Tenshi slapped him hard enough to split his lip on his teeth. "You left us both."
"I died, Monica," he wiped the blood off with the back of his hand. They could have this conversation in Mia's head and she would never know the difference. "My head was cut off; I didn't survive it. I loved you both. I did. But what did you expect me to do? Try to fight being sent in again knowing that I didn't have a choice?"
In the distance, a new pane of a glass started to form. A new tower was coming into existence. Certain towers came back quickly. Others never came back at all. Brynn's tower would return. Aidrian's tower. Those connections would come back. A wonderful thing they did or she would truly have gone utterly mad by then.
"Johnny," her tone was apologetic. It was always apologetic when they had this fight. The same fight they always had. "Johnny."
"We have to do something, Monica. We have to do something." He hugged her to him. "We have to do something. Her body grows; her mind doesn't. We cannot change her. How much can it hurt to let her try?"
"It could force her down completely, Johnny. It could. You know she digs deep when she runs away. I don't like when her eyes are empty like that."
"I don't either. But I also don't like to have to remind my grown adult daughter to go to bed and to brush her teeth and to change her clothes. Tell me that you are okay with that and I will leave off?" He loved her. He loved them both. It was hard not to. It was strange to be caught in the middle of a life that wasn't really a life, but held together by the powers of a girl who wasn't together enough to realize she had trapped her family in a form of damnation.
"You did not see what she was capable of, but I will let you have this. If you will watch her carefully."
"I will watch her carefully, my love," he kissed her face then, moving to her lips. "Perhaps we should take her to see Brynn?"
"Are you certain that isn't you wanting to see Brynn?"
"She is easy on the eyes, but you know my heart belongs to you." Back to the easy feeling between them. The wind had stilled, the towers building in the distance reached for the rose sky. All things were, at least for the moment, fine in the mental world of a girl named Mia who had no actual recorded last name.
