Summary: Zack was expecting to die. Cloud has other plans
A/N: Woot! All done. Sorry for the tardiness on them.
Oh, hells, he was going to die. There was just too many, and he couldn’t keep up this pace forever.
Zack was tired.
He wondered how his parents were, and if they knew he loved them. If Shin-Ra had even told them that he was dead, like they had told the rest of the company.
It wasn’t true, but it would let them mourn, instead of just wondering.
And he hoped Tseng told Aeris for him. He didn’t want her to think he’d forgotten her.
“Sorry, Cloud,” he murmured, breathing hard, breath tasting of blood. Forcing himself into something resembling a stance, he waited for the next wave.
And they didn’t disappoint.
Not until the fire swept over them, at least.
Startled, Zack jerked back, stumbling and falling as that was just too much for his body to take. Hitting the mud that had formed around him, he felt something in his brain be mildly grossed out. It was mud made from blood, his and others. There was rain threatening, but it hadn’t started to fall yet. The rest of his brain ignored that, and he tried to force himself to get back up. Getting up partway, his vision went spotty, so he just laid there, watching the clouds.
The rain started to fall, but he could still hear fire and screams as men burned to death. He wondered where it had come from, and was vaguely glad it had saved Cloud. Too late for him, he could tell that already. He was cold, and getting colder, and the blood under him was still warm, so it was from his injuries.
Stupid Shin-Ra and their stupid helicopters shooting stupid missiles.
Finally, the screams faded, and he heard the mud squelching as someone moved through it. Probably a surviving trooper, coming to finish him off. Well, he’d...bleed at them or something. Show them.
Please, let Cloud be safe.
Warmth.
Realizing his eyes had shut, he opened them again, head tipping to the side, trying to find the source of warmth. Being warm was good.
Blue eyes blinked at him, and Zack tried to focus.
Oooh, hallucination time.
“Hey,” he said, words a bit slurred. Couldn’t get enough air to really get them out clearly. “You’re all shiny.”
Cloud blinked at him, flames crackling along his skin, eyes glowing with more than mako. A hand reached out, little flames curling to life, then fading as he went to touch Zack. The older man gave a pained sound, the move putting pressure on injuries he didn’t even know he had. Numbness was coming on quick, and his hand groped for his sword. Cloud was here, even if Zack was hallucinating the fire. Had to pass the sword on before the numbness turned into more. “Sorry, Spike. Didn’t get us all the way there. You’ll have to go on your own.”
The hand pressed down harder, Cloud's eyes flared white, and Zack cried out. Fire raced along him, he could feel it, painful and hot, and everywhere. He screamed as things forced their way out of him, and he could feel hot metal rolling off his skin, liquid pain behind them.
Then the fire began to draw back, and with it went the pain. Panting, Zack laid there, not hurting. Aching, yeah, but the bone deep pain of internal injuries was...gone.
With a groan, Zack pressed himself up, ignoring the rain as it poured down on them, washing blood off him and sizzling off Cloud. Carefully, he reached out, fingers brushing Cloud’s skin, and he could have sworn he saw a faint flicker of flaming wings. Cloud’s skin wasn’t as hot as he would have expected, but it was warmer than he remembered.
“Cloud?”
A nod, and the white faded from Cloud’s eyes, leaving them that bright blue again, and the younger boy smiled at him. Dazed, still chilly from bloodloss, and the fact he had nearly died, Zack just tugged the man close, hugging him. Cloud made a pleased sound, the fiery wings wrapping around Zack. Yes, he was definitely seeing them. “What?”
“Phoenix. Way back.”
Suddenly the world made much more sense at Cloud’s quiet words. Anyone with a bit of sense could tell Nibelheim was one of those places where the elves lived. Earth spirits, the lot of them. Dark haired for the most part, too, though people never saw them anymore. Still, everyone knew the legends.
And there was Cloud and his mom. Bright hair, light hair. In a town full of earth spirits. In the mountains. If they had spirit blood back in the line....
And Cloud hated the town, so maybe....
Nuzzling in on Cloud’s hair, he just hugged tighter. Who knew his mom’s stories would come in handy? Phoenix spirits were fire and air spirits. The opposite of earth types.
Being in that mako tube must have been hell. No wonder Cloud had been so out of it. And the phoenixes were known for their healing abilities....
Kissing Cloud’s temple, he was surprised when Cloud latched on and gave him a kiss. “Not allowed to die.”
Why were all the people in his life so stubborn? Seph, Cloud, Aeris? Not that Zack minded. Not in the least. “Come on, Spike,” he said with a mumble, struggling to stand up. “We need to go find a place to hide. Least for a while.”
Hide, recover. Just staying low for a bit. They were close to Midgar, and he knew it would take less than a day to get there from here. They had time.
Besides, he wanted to help Cloud figure out how to deal with the fire thing before they went into a place filled with people.
Letting himself be pulled up, flames finally fading away fully, Cloud leaned into Zack, eyes bright. “Not allowed to die,” he said again, and Zack smiled.
“I won’t, Cloud. Promise.”
That seemed to be enough for Cloud, and he shut his eyes. “Tired.”
“Yeah. Me too.” He hugged the other again. “We’ll find a nice place to sleep, then work on helping you get things figured out. Work?”
A nod, and Zack smiled. “Maybe we’ll go sneak Aeris out and go someplace they’ll never find us. Besides, we got a lot to do before we become mercenaries.”
“Idiot,” came the small mumble, and Zack just grinned as they started forward, rain pouring down.
Zack didn’t know what they were going to do, and was just focusing on the next step.
Besides, Cloud all glowy like that was hot, and he was curious just how big the changes had been.
Wings. Yummy.
