New sitescheme

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
With 52.4% of the vote. Worksafe (sidebar) is the defacto winner and is now the default scheme on InsaneJournal. This really brings IJ into the future. In addition we have removed access to most of the older schemes. We have left 'New Tweak' for those of you who liked the previous scheme, and 'Lynx' for you who prefer the lightweight schemes.

We are also working hard on a new way to display the ads so they will no longer be a hindrance to the site schemes. We hope to have this rolled out by the weekend.

Once agian, I want to send a warm round of applause to the [info]ij_siteschemes crew and [info]branchandroot for all of their help in getting these new schemes up and running!

Edit: We pushed out some new stylesheets. This should help some of you with the font size issues.
  • So there is a sidebar and an Ad now taking up 1/3 of my entire screen. Not only is it killing the general layout of many journal entries, but also the main page. That's not exactly site or user friendly, and it's not pleasant to look at either. Might I suggest decreasing the size and making the sidebar smaller? Oh, and move that ad (I don't know if it's just on firefox) next to the sidebar to the bottom of the page?
  • I selected "Dramatic Sidebar" as my main site theme, but every time I log out and log back in, it reverts back to the default site scheme. Is there a way to make another scheme stay as the default even after you log out?
  • Go Squeaky and everyone else involved! :) Man, I still remember the original black and green IJ scheme. LOL
  • This is a little off topic but I have a question for you Squeaky, has the comment rot issue been fixed yet? If it has I just missed the news post about it and I aplogize.
  • An off topic question...I'm still not getting IJ comments via email. ISP is Optusnet in Australia. This issue was commented on by myself and another in a previous announcements post. I'm just wondering if I have to contact them myself to get something done or is it only fixable if you contact them. I'm still of the belief that none of the Optusnet customers that use IJ will be getting comment notification. Wonder if Optusnet things IJ comments are spam or such and are bouncing the emails. Stupid internet service providers.
  • I like the new scheme...but why is the font SO huge on UIs now?
  • Just like most of the other people I have an issue with the font. Its way too big. And the ads make the pages look weird since they are on the left.

The only thing I like about the new layout is that is easier to get around the site on my cell phone. But thats about it.
  • As a side note, I accidentally clicked on the link in this communities userinfo. I just thought you might want to change the link to this: http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/add.bml?user=announcements instead of a link for 'joining' the comm.
  • I'm sorry, but I hate the new layouts, and everyone I talk to dislikes it too. The type doesn't look good, and I personally don't see what was wrong with how it was before. I think leaving exactly how it was before as an option would make a lot of people happy. And a few people who have commented here seem to agree....

I hope that we get to have the way it was back, because honestly, this way is extremely annoying, and it doesn't look as clean.
  • Lovely new scheme! The font is a bit big though, I appreciate it of course cause I have problems with my sight but why not making it just a wee more small? Just a wee, just adding my 2 cents :)
  • I've noticed a problem with the new themes: in all of the "sidebar" variants, and I tried them all, when I go to the page with the form to update my journal, the vertical advertising on the side, next to the sidebar, bumps the posting form down the page, so that instead of appearing next to it, it's completely underneath it, a full screen's scroll down. And this is with my browser window at its widest possible size, on 1024 x 786 screen parameters.
  • Congrats to branchandroot and the crew. New site scheme looks amazing!
  • I am really excited that worksafe is now the main default, because now I don't have to go change it every time. Thank you for that. But! I know, I know, like everyone else has been saying the font is a few sizes too big, and I tried adjusting it on my browser, but all it does is make the font small, and the rest of the font on the sidebar smaller, which isn't really working for me.

I'm having another non-related issue which has to deal with the s2 bloggish format. It's not working. >.o
  • Is there a way to make the font smaller without having to adjust my browser? If I make the font small enough to be bearable on this site, it's unreadable on other sites. I like the sitescheme and colors, but the size is just huge.
  • I have no idea if this is a problem created by the new site scheme or not, but all of my journals and comms seem to have lost their style/formatting. They're all variations on bloggish. I notice most of my friends' journals have also lost theirs. Any clue what's up?
  • Thank you guys so much for leaving the option of the old scheme. I do like the looks, somewhat, of the newer ones, but I'd just rather stay with the old one.
  • i have no idea why but i recently stopped getting email notifs for the second time, is there any way to fix this? before i was getting them and some time yesterday they just stopped coming.
  • Thanks for the old schemes! I'm not liking the font issues, either, and whenever I view a page, the content is shifted really far down. The ad isn't aligned with the content, so I have to scroll all the way past it, to see entries/the update page/the "view journal" links after making a post/etc.
  • Love it!
  • I am unable to use Lynx--HELP!

I just tried resetting the site scheme to one of the new ones to see if I liked it, and I don't, so I have reset it to Lynx, and although it shows that I have selected Lynx as my scheme it's still showing me worksafe sidebar. Is there some way I can get Lynx back? Please?
  • Why did the font change back to Times New Roman? It was at Verdana yesterday.
  • I guess I missed something when it comes to people not liking the old scheme. I loved it. :(
  • I can't get used to the new schemes at all. I always liked the old scheme, (except for being grey), but to me the layout just works and looks right.

I hate the new default because the sidebar doesn't do anything for me, and pushing the ad into the middle of the page just makes it painful to look at.

Of all the new schemes, I do like Dramatic (dropdown) and I've given it a try on some of my journals, but the font size makes me uncomfortable.

It was a tough decision, but I think I'm gonna reset my journals back to the old scheme.
  • With all the votes for the new theme, I'm surprised that you keep getting all this negative feedback about it. Granted, there were only about what? 1000 votes all together? That's rather sad for such a large userbase.

    I'm happy myself. :)
  • Thanks, Squeaky & branchandroot, for your extraordinary work. Font issues aside, it's refreshing to see a default sitescheme that's so generous on the eyes. (I'm still using monodramatic sidebar! but the 1st load is still so much nicer to see!)

I am a very happy user.
